Ok, perhaps this is out on a limb…but I am a white feminist. And a mother. I regularly read a wide range of political and social writings on and off line–and I've not yet come across any widespread support of this assertion: “Many progressive feminists were distressed with Michelle’s assertion of motherhood as her primary role.” As a generalization, it makes me pause and wonder exactly how valid it is.

From my own perspective–Michelle Obama is everything a feminist woman may aspire to be–sincere, poised, professional. kind, intelligent, equal to her spouse and an amazing mother. My own brand of feminism certainly doesn't find her assertion that her role as a mother is predominant to be at all at odds with the notion that women are equally capable of contributing to to the public sphere–frankly as a mother I agree with her.

She does not need to prove herself–she already has. I've yet to come across women, mothers, or feminists in my own life that don't see that.

Be wary of wholesale generalizations of an entire group of distinct individuals.

you know what…I don't care what people are projecting onto Michelle Obama about motherhood if it does good. Michelle is showing the love every day and the people see her for real, no matter their color of skin. I lost my mother when I just turned 13….and when I see Michelle Obama do what she does not only with her children, but, her reaching out to ALL children, she brings back those wisps of memories I still have of my mom at that age when I lost her.

Michellle Obama, don't stop being Chief MOM for all of us. God Bless.
