I liked Jack Kemp a lot. He was a better man than anyone coming out of the Republican Party then and now. It's too bad his star was allowed to waver and flicker while the extremists took over the Republican Party. The moderates in the Party oughta pay some heed to his essential message, and grow some cojones to back away from the madness.

That letter to his grandchildren was beautiful. Thanks to TariqNelson for the reference. I remember the 1996 campaign. Dole and Kemp were (I recall) steadily behind Clinton and Gore for most or all of the campaign. But Dole and Kemp (as I recall) never went especially negative. I do sometimes agree with “what used to be the Republican viewpoint”, and I wish we had a better Republican Party today. I'm concerned that Kemp, a decent fellow, was old; I can't think of a YOUNG prominent Republican who is especially decent right now.
