Here's why there are no Hispanic GOP strategist on our televison screens ya'll. Unlike the black conservatives, they don't plan to kick their own people (even if they are on the opposite side) in the back.
Top-ranking Republican strategists who specialize in Hispanic outreach say they are outraged, disturbed and concerned by the type of reception Barack Obama's pick for the Supreme Court has received from conservative activists...
The rhetoric has been enough to make Republican strategists in heavily Latino states cringe -- concerned that such slights could cement Democrats advantages among a growing and increasingly influential political constituency.
"Of course this disturbs me," said Lionel Sosa, one of the more influential Hispanic media advisers in the GOP. "I'm not surprised at Rush Limbaugh but I'm very surprised at Speaker Gingrich because he is one of the key people who knows the importance of the Latino vote to the Republican Party. He must realize how his rhetoric, if it does influence any Hispanics, how damaging it could be. This [confirmation] is something that is going to happen anyway. For a senator to have strong opposition to her, they are either not aware of the impact Latinos will have on the next election or they don't care."
..."In the real world, absolutely this rhetoric matters," said former Rep. Henry Bonilla of Texas. "And that's why I think, thus far, the key leadership in Washington has been very cautious and thoughtful in their responses, and I hope that will continue... At the end of the day, people will see [these remarks] for what they are. And realize that this is nothing new coming from various opinionated people on the conservative side. It is nothing different than what comes from the liberal side."
As for Tancredo specifically, Bonilla called his remarks "outrageous." Perhaps, he added, it was a good thing because "credibility goes down the drain when you hear something like that."
...while the confirmation battle will likely cool down in the weeks ahead, some GOP advisers who specialize on the Hispanic vote said the blowback from the early salvos could continue to be felt for elections to come. "I think this is going to have a long-term effect," said Frank Guerra, a GOP strategist who has worked on Rick Perry's gubernatorial campaign in Texas and Jeb Bush's in Florida - both heavily Hispanic states. "For the most part in politics, what gets said meets the immediate need but doesn't address the long-term issues. And some of this dialogue is going to really hurt Republicans in their efforts to attract and keep Hispanic voters... This absolutely matters to the community. This is a watershed moment. It is a first. A Hispanic woman on the Court."
Democrats gleefully agreed..."This is the worst of all worlds because these are the kind of comments and quotes that rip through popular culture," said prominent Democratic pollster Celinda Lake. "And people don't realize that media outlets like Telemundo still have a lot more news content then some of the networks like CNN. And so they have longer forums where these things are commented on by pundits and observers. It will be repeated even more because Sotomayor is obviously a huge news item in Latino press. So I think these kinds of comments that people think are isolated and embarrassing actually could have a real impact culturally. And I always think pop culture has a greater impact that policy or politics."

So the Hispanic GOP strategists and analysts also have scruples....unlike the slave catchers that damn near break their necks to get on any show to tout how much they hate being black (that's all I see them do anyway).

They just cant help themselves and I am loving it Gingrich Digs In On Sotomayor-Bashing By Eric Kleefeld - May 29, 2009, 4:31PM Newt Gingrich does not seem to be deterred by the new message of the Republican leadership, such as Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), that he and Rush Limbaugh should stop calling Sonia Sotomayor a racist. Gingrich has now sent out a fundraising e-mail, asking for help to send blast faxes to every member of the Senate demanding that the Sotomayor nomination be defeated. He even says that she shouldn't even get a vote in the Senate, but should just have to withdraw. Gingrich warns that all of American civilization is at stake here. "If Civil War, suffrage, and Civil Rights are to mean anything, we cannot accept that conclusion," he writes. "It is simply un-American. There is no room on the bench of the United States Supreme Court for this worldview." http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/05/ging...

For those discussing the WH supposed "walking back" of Sotomayor's "latina" statement", here is the President in his own words:
Like I said in a previous comment, it seems to be exactly like the "Bitter & guns" statment during the primary. He doesn't seem to be saying that waht Sotomayor says was incorrect, just "inartful".
Lisa M
Didn't seem much of a "walk back" to me. It seems that they saw that the MSM was going to continue to do all they could to incite people to violence. I'm glad he said something because it's clear that bukkklanan and his ilk has lost their damn minds.
spirit_55z
I Agree, Lisa. the GOP nutwings have shown their asses over and over so anyone with sense knows the MSM will continue to give them the platform to perform.
President Obama lets them play in the sandbox and through TANTRUMS, while he goes about the business of taking care of business.
So, what do the wingnuts have to talk about Sotomayor now. He's addressed the comment. So they can stay stuck in the groove or move on to more foolishness.
It shouldn't be limited to just Washington Republicans. It should be all Republicans. I would like for the following Republicans to answer these two questions: 1. Is Sonia Sotomayor a racist? 2. Given a choice, who would you kick out of the party: Limbaugh or Powell?
Eery dayum Republican who claims to be a Republican needs to BE ON DA DAYUM record bout these two questions. Journalists need to start shoving microphones in the faces of the following people: Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, Meg Whitman, etc.
Poor Mike Huckabee done had his "Macaca" Moment with "Maria" Sotomayor. These folks are making fools out of themselves.

The Sotomayor nomination has become an occasion for Pat Buchanan to refocus on his main political cause: The endangered, persecuted white male.
On MSNBC today, Buchanan sad that Sonia Sotomayor believes in advancing minorities at the expense of white men -- and so does President Obama:
VIDEO
"But I do agree that Sonia Sotomayor, she does believe in race-based justice -- basically at the expense of white males, to advance people of color," said Buchanan. "But the truth is, that's what Barack Obama believes, as well."
Later on, the discussion about the New Haven firefighters case got pretty heated. "And these firefighters are gonna win it," Buchanan exclaimed, "and that woman was takin' away their rights because they were white!"

Guess what, now the Obama adminstration is saying Sotomayor should have stated what she said in a better way. WTF??
Southerngal80
I'm trying to find it now online but can't but came in as breaking news on MSNBC. Basically Pres. Obama said if you look at her whole speech, you'd understand what she meant, that as an educated woman who is of Latin heritage would have have a more to bring to the table of in regards of race and sex discrimination on the bench. He said that he's sure she would have restated it better. How are you going to cave in to the these right wing nuts who clearly took her words out of context, and had no problem with what she said then, but all of a sudden they do now.
lamh32
I would have wished they had said nothing, but on the other hand, they DID NOT SAY that what she said was wrong did they? It's the same thing with Obama's bitter remarks during the primary, they did not say that Obama was wrong, but they did say that his wording could have been better. I think what they are saying is that the words being bandied about could have been worded in a "better way", but in context, they were NOT RACIST or OFFENSIVE.
Southerngal80
Me too, because it was trivial. Anyone with half a brain knows that she wasn't saying she was better than a white man, just that her experience makes her more empathic in cases regarding sex and race than a white man on the bench because more than likely, they haven't experience discrimination based on their color or even their sex.
Justice58
That's it, Southerngal!
Howard Fineman & the rest can kick f-ing rocks!

Exactly! You should've heard Howard Fineman's Just For Men ass bitching and moaning, swearing up and down that Sotomayor was saying that she's better than them. That's not what she said, but if she did, SO WHAT! Everyday, all we (POC) of color hear is how much better white people, particularly white men, are better than us. Look at all the white faces on these cable shows. Hell, they give David Gregory a SECOND show when he can hardly run MTP. If that ain't a "white men are better than you, negro" message, I don't know what is.

AM2k9
Dear AM2k9,
On Tuesday, President Obama announced his nomination of Sonia Sotomayor—a proud Puerto Rican and Latina—to be the next Supreme Court Justice. Within hours, the right wing began attacking her—not based on her record—but through thinly veiled racist and sexist rhetoric:
“This is someone who clearly was picked because she’s a woman and Hispanic, not because she was the best qualified.” – Curt Levy of the Committee for Justice1
“I have heard that she is is almost a bully at times, that she has the image of not being that intellectually bright.” – Glenn Beck, FoxNews 2
“Obama is the greatest living example of a reverse racist and now he’s appointed one … Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court.” – Rush Limbaugh, Talk Show Host3
The reality is that Sotomayor is an accomplished judge who would have more federal judicial experience than any Supreme Court justice in 100 years. These attacks are not just insulting to Sotomayor, they’re an affront to all Latinos and anyone who believes that a nominee should be judged on their record, not their heritage, skin tone, or name.
We want to make sure that everyday folks know the truth about Sotomayor, as well as the bigoted nature of the criticisms being thrown at her. Please take just a moment to show your support for Sotomayor and to take a stand against her attrackers, and ask your friends and family to do the same:
Judge Sotomayor’s credentials are truly impressive. Here are just a few of them:
• She graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University, was an editor of the Law Journal at Yale Law School, and worked as a prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
• In her nearly 400 opinions on the federal bench, she has consistently protected the rights of working Americans; she’s ruled for freedoms of religious expression, assembly and free speech; and she has a strong civil rights record, ruling for plaintiffs who had been discriminated against based on disability, sex and race.
• Judge Sotomayor even “saved baseball” in 1995, when she stopped the owners from illegally changing their bargaining agreement with the players, thereby ending the longest professional sports walk-out in history.
• People who have worked with her describe her as "...an outstanding colleague with a keen legal mind,”4 “highly qualified for any position in which wisdom, intelligence, collegiality and good character would be assets,”5 and “a role model of aspiration, discipline, commitment, intellectual prowess and integrity.”6
The attack from the right wing is predictable and offensive. Their objection clearly stems from a fear that Sotomayor will get in the way of their agenda. Instead of being honest about that, they’ve attacked Sotomayor’s character and are using the kind of coded language that appeals to those who fear anything but a white male on the Supreme Court. They should be ashamed, and we should be outraged.
We can push back by speaking clearly and loudly. Please join us in combating the hateful rhetoric from the far right and standing strong in support of Judge Sotomayor:
I agree with your assessment. Many in this community have pointed out that there arent many Latino voices in the media and the ones that are there tend to speak from the right (notice how during the campaign CNN featured so many anti-Obama latina/os during their coverage). Nevertheless, the attacks on Sotomayor go beyond her and her Latina roots. Just imagine if Obama would've nominated Kim Crenshaw of UCLA law school (who's black), the attacks would've been twice as ugly....or Kagan, the openly lesbian dean of SLS? My my my.....The ugly right needs to be defeated one battle at the time....this is just the latest fight.

If he nominated Crenshaw and they started this mess, make no mistake, we'd be all up in it, going HELL TO THE NAW, MUTHAFUCKAS.

Executive Director Of Tancredo's PAC Guilty Of "Karate Chop" Assault On African-American Woman
So, it's evident Tancredo is only "concerned" about racism when it furthers his bigoted agenda. (Though there is absolutely nothing racist about Sotomayor or La Raza.)
That article made me feel a little creepy. It seems Uncle Charlie wants to express deep feelings but dare not. I remember seeing him on stage at the convention; he looked pleased to be there, but what gave me pause was Barack walking passed him without notice. Maybe Uncle Charlie wasn't close to Barack's mother or Toot. Who knows, but one thing I have learned about the president, he believes in keeping people who really don't like him close.
danadevin74
yes it gave me a funny feeling also especially the part " I am puzzled by intelligent people who stand by and allow their country to be taken over and run by extreme radical types. I'm still somewhat puzzled by that. And I am fully aware that it could happen and has almost happened in this country. You know, I lived through the McCarthy era in the 1950s, when it was getting dangerously close to that sort of thing".
do you think he was referring to President Obama? maybe he and president Obama aren't close i just hope uncle Charlie doesn't cause any trouble

Didn't the Repubs try this elitist crap with Obama...... And if I recall it did not work. So why in the world are they attacking this lady again. They are living the very definition of insanity.
Val
I hope they kick it into overdrive because all they are doing is amputating the GOP's arm by not only having less than 1% african american supporters but elimating any hispanic and other minority support they may have.
President Barack Obama remains by far the most popular world leader among people in major Western nations and is the one political figure on whom people consistently pin their hopes in the economic crisis, according to new polls conducted for the International Herald Tribune. About 80 percent of people in France, Germany, Italy and Spain have a positive view of Mr. Obama, a ratio that declines only slightly, to about 70 percent, in the other two countries surveyed, Britain and the United States. The only politician who comes close is Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, who gets a positive rating from two-thirds of those in Continental Europe but from only one-third of Britons and Americans.
Hey d, but does this make you proud to be Republican or what??? This is that "Big Tent" party you wanted right???
Seriously though, this is really getting outta hand. Either Rush is drunk on his own powere (and I know you say he doesn't speak for you, but his seems to speak for some of your brethren), or he is truly just an azz!!!

G. Gordon Liddy Smears All Spanish-Speakers as Illegal Immigrants Ali Frick catches criminal and conservative talk radio host G Gordon Liddy saying “Let’s hope that the key conferences aren’t when she’s menstruating or something, or just before she’s going to menstruate”. The reference, of course, is Judge Sonia Sotomayor. But don’t worry, he said racist stuff too!
LIDDY: I understand that they found out today that Miss Sotomayor is a member of La Raza, which means in illegal alien, “the race.” And that should not surprise anyone because she’s already on record with a number of racist comments.
Yes, that’s right, Liddy thinks every single Spanish-speaking person is an illegal alien. That would come as news to the population of, say, Peru. And also to the millions of Puerto Ricans who aren’t immigrants at all, to the (largely Republican!) Cuban-American population which knows that Cubans can legally immigrate to the US in unlimited quantities, to the historically Spanish-speaking populations of the Southwest who came to be American citizens after the US conquered the places where they live in the Mexican War, and of course to the many, many, many legal immigrants to this country from Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America as well as to their descendants.
Will anyone on the right speak out against this bigotry? I won’t hold my breath. Only a minority of conservatives go around saying racist stuff. But it’s an article of conservative faith that “political correctness” is a huge problem and racism is not a problem at all, so it would be unbecoming to complain about Liddy http://yglesias.thinkprogress.org/archives/2009...

So now she's a menstruating, unintelligent, activist, racist woman. Is there anything else they can call her? They are running out of smears.
Are you kidding? They've got a million more. She's obviously an illegal (where's the birth certificate?), plus she's a socialist, she's a fascist, she got her purple heart through political pull, she's not really Puerto Rican but Dominican, she's not really Puerto Rican but an Arab, she let pederasts go free, she sent $30 to the ACLU, she's George Soros' mistress, she yelled at a bailiff and made him cry . . .
CFP says: No doubt he can be outrageous at times, but it's hard to tell when he is serious and when he is saying things for the reaction and publicity.
What the hell difference does it make? If he's serious about what he says, it shows he is an arrogant, chauvanistic, bigoted little man with no respect for woman. If he's seeking a reaction and publicity that shows he is an arrogant, empathy-challenged, little man with no respect for anyone. It's like comparing a man who rapes because he wants to hurt women with a man who rapes for his own sexual pleasure. It's a difference that makes no difference.
In Memory Of Robert Mitchell Can We Stop Calling Tasers Non- Lethal Force?: I am sick and tired of white feminists claiming solidarity with WOC and yet when one of our sons, is killed silence. A black male has a black mother and therefore it damn well is a womans issue. This is exactly why black women refuse to own the label of feminists and yet these clueless racist women cannot seem to figure it out.
*** Conservative vs. conservative: After Rush, Newt, and Tancredo called Sonia Sotomayor a racist, a bigot, and an “angry woman,” Charles Krauthammer today fires off this warning to his fellow conservatives: stop the personal attacks. “What should a principled conservative do? Use the upcoming hearings not to deny her the seat, but to illuminate her views. No magazine gossip from anonymous court clerks. No ‘temperament’ insinuations. Nothing ad hominem. The argument should be elevated, respectful and entirely about judicial philosophy.” In today’s Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan offers similar advice. Republicans, she says, should act like grown-ups. The Krauthammer/Noonan message to Republicans is this: fight Sotomayor respectfully and then confirm her. Of course, that advice is easier said than done. Just asking, but did Rush really hurt himself among Republicans and conservatives this week? John Cornyn -- nobody's liberal Republican in the Senate -- seemed to very coherently send a message to the unelected conservatives when he also chimed in and said the tone wasn't helpful. Could this week actually help the GOP if it means it gets the elected establishment to unite against the unelected leaders? Or will this week divide the party even further? It may be in Rush's court now.
*** A successful rollout so far: Given this conservative divide over Sotomayor, could this week have gone any better for the Obama White House? Yesterday, we couldn't find a single elected Republican serving in Washington issuing any press release on Sotomayor. (Sure, Pat Roberts went on the record against her, but he's not the household name that should fire up the troops.) Instead, all of their focus was on debating the Obama stimulus package. (That stimulus debate is one the White House wants, and yet we'd argue they were better off that it was overshadowed by Sotomayor. The reason: The economic numbers don't look good, and the White House doesn't easily have anything to point to -- yet -- when it comes to the stimulus package and whether it's definitely helped soften the economic blows many are still feeling. But we digress...) The Sotomayor pick has just devastated the Republicans, split them worse than anything so far the Obama White House has done.

BWHAHAHAH!!!! They are imploding guys!!! It''s too late now to put the genie back in the bottle. The funny thing about this one guys, is that she has been all over the TV and her comments all shwed her own racial bias!
Another conservative -- joining Charles Krauthammer and Peggy Noonan -- appears to be calling for an end to the incendiary rhetoric on race and intellect surrounding Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. This morning, Wendy Long, counsel to the Judicial Confirmation Network and a former clerk for Justice Clarence Thomas, posted an item on National Review Online urging that the debate focus on her judicial philosophy.
"Somehow, this important debate is turning into an argument about race and identity politics," Long wrote. "Many of us in the conservative movement believe that Judge Sotomayor is intelligent, and that, at least on paper, she has professional qualifications that are certainly sufficient for occupying a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court."
Nevertheless, Long continues to believe Sotomayor's judicial philosophy is "very troubling" and that her comments in 2001, in which Sotomayor stated that a Latina woman may reach a wiser judicial decision than a white male, are fair ground for debate. Long also cites Sotomayor's 2005 comment that appellate courts "make policy" as cause for alarm.
Of course, Long herself was one of the early voices raising the race issue. On the day of the Sotomayor announcement, Long told NBC's Pete Williams, "Imagine if a white man said, 'I think a white man would make a better decision than a Latina or a black woman.' We would justifiably be completely outraged. And I think the outrage should be completely the same when it's coming from her side."

Published on Thursday, May 28, 2009 by CommonDreams.org Soldier Seeking Asylum: 'I Want to Be Able to Atone' Elsa Rassbach interviews André Shepherd, a U.S. soldier applying for asylum in Germany
by Elsa Rassbach
Berlin, May 26, 2009. Early in June, President Barack Obama will sign into law the supplemental funding of 92 billion U.S. dollars for the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan that was approved by the U.S. Congress last week. Then he will depart for a speaking tour and meetings with heads of state in Egypt and in Europe.
On June 5th, he will be coming to visit us here in Germany, making stops at the concentration camp at Buchenwald, at Weimar, and at Dresden, a site also of massive bombings of civilians during World War II. This will be Obama's third visit to Germany in less than a year, and it seems likely that he will once again, as in the previous two visits, make a pitch for more German support for the ongoing "war against terror," particularly in Afghanistan. Though Obama is popular here, the German government has for the most part stonewalled his requests for further direct German involvement in these wars.
The well-known German ambivalence towards the U.S. "war against terror" is now being further tested by a U.S. soldier's application for asylum in Germany. André Shepherd, who was stationed in Germany, refuses to deploy to Iraq. Many U.S. soldiers stationed in Europe who refused service in or support of the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan have been tried in U.S. military courts in Europe and imprisoned in the U.S. military's correctional facility at Mannheim; the most well known are Blake Lemoine (2005) and Agustín Aguayo (2006-2007).
But Shepherd is so far the first to turn to the German government for help: last November he filed a formal application to the German government for asylum. For the moment his case is entirely outside of U.S. jurisdiction.
Shepherd argues that there are strong reasons arising from Germany's history for Germany to grant him asylum: the Nuremberg Principles and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany that has provisions written in the spirit of Nuremberg. In 2005 the highest German administrative court upheld a German military officer's right to refuse orders in 2003 to provide software that might have been used by the U.S. for logistics during the invasion of Iraq.
Shepherd's case is of significance in part because of the strategic importance of the bases in Germany for the U.S. wars in the Middle East. Outside of Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. has far more bases in Germany than in any other country; ca. 68,000 U.S. troops are stationed at U.S. bases throughout southern Germany. Approximately 80% of the soldiers and supplies to the war zones are routed through Germany, which also hosts the Pentagon's commands for Africa (AFRICOM) and for Europe and the former Soviet Union (EUCOM).
As a sovereign nation, Germany could at any time restrict use of the U.S. bases, as Turkey, also a NATO member, did in 2003. The German government refused to provide its own troops for the Iraq war, which did not have a UN mandate. But the German government interpreted the NATO treaties as allowing the U.S. to use the U.S. bases in Germany for the invasion of Iraq.
According to a 2005 survey conducted by the German military (Bundeswehr), 68% of the Germans polled oppose the use of war to solve any international conflict; in contrast ca. 90% of U.S. citizens support the use of war. Per numerous surveys, a majority of Germans oppose German participation in the war in Afghanistan. In the campaigns leading up to the parliamentary election in September, it is likely that at least one parliamentary party will call for the closing of all foreign military bases on German soil.
André Shepherd, 32, grew up in Ohio, where he attended college. Like President Obama, he is an African-American. In 2003, when unemployed, he joined the U.S. Army. He was trained as an Apache helicopter mechanic and was stationed in Germany at the U.S. Army's Ansbach-Katterbach base. From there he was deployed in 2004 to Iraq for six months. In 2007, back in Germany, he received orders to return to Iraq. In April 2007, he went absent without leave (AWOL) and lived underground in Germany. He formally applied for asylum in Germany on November 26, 2008. His application references a directive of the European Union under which soldiers must be granted asylum in the E.U. if they have reason to fear persecution in their home countries for refusing to participate in crimes or actions that violate international law. Shepherd is currently living in an asylum facility in western Germany together with other asylum applicants, primarily from Iraq and Afghanistan; the facility and a small living stipend are provided by the German government pending the outcome of his case.
This interview was previously published in the national German daily newspaper junge Welt on May 23, 2009, the 60th anniversary of the German Constitution.
European sentiment is probably still relatively against the wars....it was VERY strong years ago while I live abroad...
But what I do know is that the Germany economy, especially in the smaller towns and cities which are nearby US military instsllations thrive economically because of the money the US pours into those areas, the JOBS the citizens of the host countries have on the bases and the money GI's and their families spend. There was much controversy and outrage among many German towns when word spread that the US was considering closing a good portion of bases of Germany.....so as much as Germans oppose our foreign policy, they are also benefitting from the cost of allowing our troops to be stationed in their countries........any area around the world does.
For anyone who wonders how any person could continue to serve today, I have to say it is very complicated, but I would hope most people hold their judgment for those who do and also respect those who decide to leave. The majority of military members today are married.....I think the percentage is higher than it has ever been in military history......and because of that, many, many choose to almost stay in out of "necessity", to keep health benefits for their families in this tumultuous economic climate we live in today....and there are quite a few members who served well before George W. Bush ill-served our troops and are now 'career soldiers" trying to hold on for a career they have invested a good portion of their adult life in and trying to push on for retirement. Our troops have bills, mortgages, loans, are trying to save for their children's future, education and other experiences invested in their careers JUST LIKE other non-military Americans and I think those who do not serve often forget that.
I wish the best for this brotha, I can only imagine what the experience ofcombat and war may have done to his conscience and I respect his viewpoint. But I would recommend that anyone who chooses military service today must really ponder what it means, the sacrifice it entails, and whether they are committed to what may come with that duty which oftentimes is NOT a delight to live with, believe me.
Monie, my sister's husband has been destroyed by more tours to Bosnia, Afganistand and Iraq that I can count. My sister has three young sons with him. He also has two young children from two other women he impregnated while on some military bases somewhere. He wants nothing more than to get out, but he can't. He's got mouths to feed.
I know exactly what you're talking about.

Why does John Dugan, comptroller of the currency and Republican appointee, still have his job? Is it becasue he is carrying Fredo's water? As board member of FDIC vetoes increase in insurance rates on big banks arguing that they don't fail. DUH They don't fail because the administration doesn't let them. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/ar...
Just amazing. Bill Bennett (he of Superpredator fame) and Fred Barnes on Sotomayor:
BARNES: I think you can make the case that she's one of those who has benefited from affirmative action over the years tremendously.
BENNETT: Yeah, well, maybe so. Did she get into Princeton on affirmative action, one wonders.
BARNES: One wonders.
BENNETT: Summa Cum Laude, I don't think you get on affirmative action. I don't know what her major was, but Summa Cum Laude's a pretty big deal.
BARNES: I guess it is, but you know, there's some schools and maybe Princeton's not one of them, where if you don't get Summa Cum Laude then or some kind of Cum Laude, you then, you're a D+ student.
Say it after me:
THEY ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE.
whiterosebuddy
Bennett and Barnes, themselves, benefitted from affirmative action tremendously over the years. If they were not whitemales they would not hold their positions. Neither Bennett nor Barnes were complaining about affirmative action when it was solely for white males.
Can someone please tell be where Barnes matriculated? He has the audacity to disparage the academic rigor at Princeton, solely to try to make his out and out lies about affirmative action equals unqualified, and when it doesn't fit with summa cum laude and the Pyne Prize...THEN it is that the academic rigor of the institution is somehow less than stellar.
Give. Me. A. Break.
where did barnes go to school...$50.00 bucks says he went to Podunk U ain't nobody EVER heard of ..and he is trying to play the elitist card!

The son of an Air Force officer, Barnes graduated from St. Stephens School in Alexandria in 1960. He spent two years in the U.S. Army and considered applying to West Point, but instead decided to attend the University of Virginia where he studied history. Barnes graduated from the University of Virginia and was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University.
After spending several years as a journalist with The Charleston News and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina, he became a reporter for the Washington Star in 1979. Barnes covered the Supreme Court and the White House for the Star before moving to the Baltimore Sun. He was the national political correspondent at the Baltimore Sun. For ten years from 1985 to 1995, he was senior editor and White House correspondent for The New Republic. He also wrote the "Presswatch" media column for the American Spectator. He was a panelist on the public affairs show The McLaughlin Group from 1988 to 1998, where he was often referred to by the show's host as Freddy "the Beadle" Barnes.
In 1984, Barnes was chosen to be one of three panelists quizzing then-President Ronald Reagan and challenger Walter Mondale in the first nationally-televised debate of the 1984 presidential campaign.
Barnes has made cameo appearances in the Hollywood films Dave, Getting Away with Murder, Independence Day and My Own Private Idaho. He has thrown out the first pitch for a Boston Red Sox baseball game at Fenway Park.
Though having gone to separate high schools, Barnes was a friend of fellow Fox News personality Brit Hume in high school, and at The University of Virginia. Hume had gone to another elite private school, St. Albans.
Most recently, Barnes penned a biography of President George W. Bush, Rebel in Chief.

HARVARD, I beleive.

This articly is cra-azy!!!! It by the AP and posted on MSNBC online. It just can't be journalism. It seems like a Faux News story!
"The White House portrays Sotomayor as a living image of the American dream, though its telling of the rags-to-riches story emphasizes the rags, a more politically appealing narrative, and plays down the riches."
"On ethnicity, Sotomayor herself has recognized — and contributed to — the dichotomy. She proudly highlights her Puerto Rican roots but hasn't always liked it when others have. She once took issue with a prospective employer who singled her out as a Latina with questions she viewed as offensive yet has shown a keen ethnic consciousness herself."
or this jewel
"She now earns more than $200,000 a year and owns a condominium in Greenwich Village, a neighborhood of million-dollar-plus homes. Her brother, Dr. Juan Sotomayor, is a physician in North Syracuse, N.Y., whose practice doesn't accept Medicaid or Medicare — programs for the poor and elderly — according to its Web site."
What is the point of this article? Is it that she is disengenuosly poor. If so, then that puts her in the same category as the marginalized Rush Limbaugh (caucasian male).
Or the other point that is a minority only when it's advantageous. Like living in the projects (for however long) and being an immigrant was somehow apart of her career plan for success?!?!? This article is pure tripe.
Miranda
These muthasuckas right HERE!!!!! DAMN, what the HELL??
so taking offense to an employer asking inappropriate questions about your ethnic background, that aren't getting asked of other prospective employees means what exactly? so unless you accept people's ignorant treatment of minorities as simply part of what it means to be a minority, then you are hiding your heritage? SERIOUSLY?!? and they're seriously going to bring her brother into this? i must have missed where he got nominated to anything. that's ron fournier's AP for you.
JJai
as Rev. Run would say mentioning the brother is "rea-reaching!"
The whole article was an amateur attempt at journalism (at best) and overall ri-damn-diculous!
I know there are never the right words to express sympathy for the loss of a child. I will only say my heart goes out to you and your family. From experience, it's the hardest thing any family can go through, so hold on to each other; love each other; and know that every moment you think you just can't get through it, you will. You will.

So sorry for your loss Ms Martin.
Prayers for you and your family

I have no words to express my condolences. The only support I can offer is to remind you that our Father in heaven hears your cry, can understand your overwhelming pain, and can offer you some healing.
However, I recommend that you take ALL the time you need to grieve. The earth was blessed with his presence.
MsMartin, I am so sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my prayers.

Thank you so much Miranda. This is one of my favorite songs and it was sung at Tyran's funeral.

Thank you rikyrah. I miss my baby, but I know he's with God and that eases my pain a little.

Do you find the Charlie Chan movie series racist?
I always thought it was obvious Charlie was smart as shyt solving those crimes around the clueless White folk...
the son was young and inexperienced...he needed his wise father's guidance.
Just wondering.
RobM
Only because it was a white actor playing Chan and Rochester. Bruce Lee got the same treatment over Kung Fu w/ David Carradine. Nonetheless all the Asian students at my college didn't miss an episode. They did call BS on much of the interaction of the women whom weren't prosititutes or opium addicts.
