No, running water does not require gov't intervention; it's not about INTERVENTION, It's about providing a source of “clean” water. Regardless of where the water comes, people don't want to have a contamiated source of water. We had a well when growing up on our farm; still have it at my parent's place. Never said the 8-hour day is mandatory. It is a beneft brought to us by the unions and all those who came before and fought for the right to not be taken advantage of. There ARE laws governing pay regarding hours worked, etc.

Well, I live in a small town, and without “government intervention” in the form of enforcing safety standards on drinkable water that comes from a well, a lot of public health hazards would ensue.

A private industry, like a restaurant or a dental clinic, that uses well water needs to be inspected. I'm not interested in people getting sick and dying before a business goes under because it has contaminated the population with something from its well.

Free from bias… there an interesting point. It is biased to force someone to a higher percentage of their income simply because they make more. If were were talking straight percentages, perhaps the argument for no bias could be made.

Alternately, something like the Fair Tax cold be implemented, in which everyone gets their essentials tax free and all purchases are taxed. Say the rate is 20% You buy a car for $10,000, you pay your percent of tax on it ($2000). Chip Silverspoon buys his Mercedes for $50,000, he ends up paying $10,000 in tax. Not perfect, but it meets the criteria we're both looking for.

a) Poorer people pay less.
b) Richer people pay more.
c) One always has the choice to participate (buy) or not.

Running water does not require government intervention; there are plenty of people with wells that do just fine. In a city, a private industry could easily handle the load of water distribution.

The FCC assigns airwaves… and private industry provides the programming. We could argue the FCC's proper role, but I suspect that I'd be more progressive than you are when it comes to that.

If the tax system applied its fees equally, either via a flat percentage (somewhat better than the current state of affairs) or a flat rate (unsustainable but absolutely fair) perhaps your argument would have merit.

You concede that the sudden urgency of the now on this issue is probably more Obama related than economy related.

The people who have been lining this up and midwifing it along are white supremacists and their slightly more reticent cousins.
