Every single time I see Michelle Obama I smile. it does not matter what she is doing or what she is wearing there is just something about her that makes my heart happy. I think this is part of the reason I get so upset when people compare her to Jackie O or Princess Diana.It is like they insist on making white women the standard that all women must “measure up” to and refuse to acknowledge the splendid black woman that she is.

Honestly, I hope Michelle Obama stays as far away from politics as she can…
The detractors in the political forum can distort and demean yo, and turn the world against youu….and unfortunatelyy, while it is euphoric now and the First Lady is experiencing widespread admiration…do NOT think for one minute those who oppose her and her husband will not stop with their attacks and distortions.
Michelle will return to what she know is her niche and her comfort after the President's term is over….and I think she will remain one of the most admired women in the history of the world.

Speaking of comparisons, though, what do y'all think about folks calling the First Lady, “the new Oprah”? I can see what they're saying, but it makes me uneasy – only room for one black lady at the top, LOL!

I think what is driving most haters crazy is Michelle is not your typical stereotype looking Black woman who they push off as beautiful in the media.
Lets see Michelle rocks her own hair no Blonde wigs for Michelle. She loves to show off her muscle toned upper body with pride. Which certain media circles healthy looking women like Michelle are told they must look anorexic thin to be pretty. Michelle facial structural is like the mass majority of dark black women who are ignored by the Media. And when they are noticed they are told that there ugly.
Michelle dress in clothing uncommon for women her size and height and enjoys wearing many different colors.
So, be prepared folks for four long years people will be slamming and tearing down Michelle for her boldness.

I am actually far more comfortable with her being compared to Oprah than some over privileged white woman. Oprah is also successful and beautiful. As far as I am concerned the more positive images of black womanhood that the world has to reflect upon the better.

WM – here is my response to a This week with BO post entitled Thursday, April 2, 2009 – First Lady Michelle Obama is the new Princess Diana
Can I be a bit of a nudge here? I have no desire to see Michelle Obama labeled as the “new Princess Diana.” I think I know what is meant by using Princess Diana as a comparison, but I think it is incorrect on a number of levels. (And let me just say that I don't/didn't know either of these women from a can of paint…)
First, the obvious and tragic end of Princess Diana's life is just not what I want associated with Mrs. O.
Second — They had very different upbringings. I got the sense that Diana was actually not really cherished at all, resulting a materially rich but woefully neglected woman. Her love relationships seemed anything but partnerships. It would appear that she was 'chosen' as suitable wifey material, and that's really all that was thought to matter.
Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama, on the other hand, was loved, supported and surrounded by positive family and friends, obtained a great education and, from what I understand, did just as much 'choosing' of Barack Hussein Obama as he did of her.
The one thing they did have in common was a genuine empathy for people and the lives they/we lead. And that 's a great thing to have in common. I just really think that FLOTUS ought to be allowed to just be MIchelle. and that we not search for comparison. She is truly a first, a one-of-a-kind. Michelle needn't be like anyone other than Michelle. I'm pretty sure she knows that.
The question is, do we?

Just like how some of the fashion designers who don't use black women are white women. Just like how most, if not all, of the most popular magazines don't put black women on the cover are run by white women. Michelle Obama has broken through that glass ceiling of “American Standard of Beauty.” And it's not WHITE.

That's partly what I'm talking about. I'm just not feeling the Jackie O / Lady Di vibe. Michelle is Michelle, smart, black, pretty AND married to thhe POTUS. Some folks just can't stand it. Others must find someone to compare her to. She's Michelle. One and only.
But the other thing is that she is making people face their own prejudices, their own judgemental natures, etc. . Folks don't like that… makes them feel uncomfortable. I've said it before — Of course I'm not saying that she is perfect, nobody is.
But she does personify excellence by the very society that would exclude her from their “club” and by her very presence, she also makes people who have skated along become very aware of their own inadequacies. It irks a WHOLE LOT OF PEOPLE that she is Ivy educated undergrad and grad and married to a pretty powerful guy, has two beautiful kids, a nice house, and a supportive family. AND she's internationally popular? The haters are coming out of the woodworks.
I'm not perfect, not by a long shot, so in a very positive way, she and Barack have made me step my game up. If the haters would be a little self reflective, they might find some areas for improvement too…
