Susan Boyle getting her Burbery and leather on
Yes, Looks Do Matter By PAM BELLUCK Published: April 24, 2009
FOR more than a week now, people on both sides of the Atlantic have been using the story of Susan Boyle — the dowdy Scottish spinster who sang her way to fame on “Britain’s Got Talent” TV show — as an example of just how shallow we’ve become.
(Burberry...what every Brit dreams of? I know what the leather jacket's about: the mods and rockers movements)
She does need a little make-up for that rosacea she's got. But touching up is not the same as plastic surgery.
That NYT article is really good. I saw it before I got on JJP.
spirit_55z
Agree. I commented on her image last week and knew it was only a matter of time before her appearance would start changing. She now holds the record for the most hits on youtube.
I'm watching Key Largo on our PBS station in Madison, and I can figure the outline of Bogart's toupee...something I wouldn't have seen when I first saw this film.
Nothing wrong with looking good...it's just the extreme means of seeking beauty that I object to. All these girls look alike these days: blonde, streaked or otherwise, fixed noses, and thin as rails. What I'm wondering is, can the dudes tell the difference?
spirit_55z
blksista, you aint NEVA lied about HDTV. It is not kind to the face.
HDTV takes the appearance straignt to th atomic level. LOL!
I don't see Susan botoxing and liposuctioning.

Sen Gregg didn't take the Commerce Secretary position. He whined about how the Census Dept was being moved to the White House. It was moved back. We have a Secretary of Commerce whom is Chinese American. He caught all shorts of s@#$ from rural Washington State as Gov. I am so looking forward to him putting the Census in order after the Hammer's move's in 2001 & 02 in Texas and elsewhere. This is why "If you're in prison in upstate NY should you be counted as part of the population when you can't vote." read the whole thing: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/ar...

RobM,
this took me to an article about Russia. ...was that the article you thought you linked to?
Missing 3-year-old girl's body found in NJ river PASSAIC, N.J. — The body of a 3-year-old girl has been found in a northern New Jersey river, just hours after police say her uncle left with her and told family members "to watch the 6 o'clock news tonight".
Passaic police spokesman Andy White says Janiay Rievas (juh-NY'-uh REE'-vis) was found around 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Passaic River. Authorities are still searching for 21-year-old Juan Mendez, whose abandoned car was found on a bridge over the river. Mendez had been living with family members in Passaic. Police say he left with the girl at around 6 a.m. White says family members told police Mendez "left in a rage and said to watch the 6 o'clock news tonight." http://www.ajc.com/news/content/shared-gen/ap/N...
spirit_55z
Ummm... Why would the family let this nut job take a 3 year olds hand, let alone take her away from the house at 6 a.m., if he was in a rage? This doesn't make sense to me.

My Lord! What an evil animal to kill that poor baby!
Good Day All: So Oprah let the world know that she does NOT have a hair weave and all the hair we see on tv is HERS. I must confess I thought it was odd that she would've suddenly started wearing hair extensions but it wasn't that big a deal to me. I have a new blog post on: The Racial Politics With Black Women's Hair http://snipurl.com/gpfm4

The Black Snob is back!!
Condi and the Dinner Party of Doom (Reprint!) Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 6:57AM
The more conservative wing of the Secret Council of American Negroes, their sister group, Negroes of North America (NONA) recently threw a party for newly elected Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele. Alas, the party was planned before the man's many verbal faux pas that would leave the moderates and conservatives of NONA sucking their teeth, tut-tutting and wishing they were anywhere but at Ritz Carlton with the man many had begun to call "Black Glover" when not looking.
But the person who truly wished to be "anywhere but here" was Condoleeza Rice, but the outing was as good an excuse as any to brag about her multi-million dollar book deal to a less rich and powerful, but better looking Michelle Bernard and Amy Holmes.
The trio were in some ways the "Mean Girls" of the conservative set, intimidating other black conservative women with their fashion sense and beauty. Condi and Michelle often pretended to like each other, especially Michelle, since Condi was the "queen" of black, female center-right politicos. Michelle was SUPPOSED to love Condi. Love her. Or at least that's what she kept saying over and over.
That, and her Manolos were on hit that night.
"I bought them during the Battle of Seattle. Thank God no one cared what I did back then," Condi joked, making her their off-color "shopping during Katrina" reference.
Condi wasn't drunk, but she was mauling her way through dirty martinis. Alcohol brought out the "sistah" in her, or at least the politically incorrect jokester. But she could snap it back in line at a moments notice, leading some to wonder if those were really martinis at all.
But they were. Condi had developed quite the alcohol tolerance after eight years in the Bush White House.
Grenadine was her friend.
"You are so funny!" Michelle quipped to Condi's Katrina/Shopping/"I'm a terrible person" jokes. Condi simply relished in the bad girl attention.
"I know," she cooed.
Amy Holmes, who was stuffing cheese into a napkin and into her purse while sipping a pomegranate martini as slowly as possible was just happy to get in free. She actually liked Condi and her off-color stories. She liked Michelle too, even though Michelle treated her like shit because Amy was the cute-as-a-button competition. There was a kid sister-like rivalry between them. Like both were vying for Condi's approval, yet the more polished and perfected Michelle was obviously favored.
Very interesting and a reminder how much some of us take our lives for granted when we don't have to face these types of issues. Approx. 8 years ago I worked for a large company and an engineer who apparently was a long time employee was going to go through trans gender operations and become a woman. Our human resources dept. worked with the employee to be reintroduced as a she. I didn't know the employee but to my knowledge the person involved made the transition ok without encountering any problems from co-workers.

Congratulations,, womanistmusings. Well informed article. I learn something new everyday. Thank you.
I have a post up at SiTV from the Southern Poverty Law Center about Latinos and Discrimination in the South. Let's just say that history is repeating itself somewhat...
I find this interesting regarding Nestle trying to control community water. I have read articles in the past couple of years warning that the next big natural resource fight will be for water. Not just locally but globally.
"Earlier today, David Gregory interviewed Jordan's King Abdullah II for this Sunday's Meet the Press and asked him if he thought the United States engaged in torture. The King's answer: "Well, from what we've seen and what we've heard, there are enough accounts to show that this is the case. But there is still a major battle out there. And I think that America, and I think what President Obama is trying to do, is make sure that the legal system that America is known for is transparent."
David then interjected: "That's an important point. You actually do believe that the United States engaged in torture." To which King Adullah responded, "From what I see... on the press they show that there were illegal ways of dealing with detainees."
King Abdullah II has emerged as the linchpin leader of the Arab world -- it's no coincidence that he was the first Middle East leader to visit President Obama (noticeably ahead of Bibi Netanyahu), so I'm looking forward to the whole interview, to be broadcast this Sunday morning. Here's a preview...

Dick Cheney and George Bush have ruined America's image to the world. Now President Obama has to work very hard to pull us out of this muck we're in. The past Administration ran the country into the ground. Why they weren't impeached is beyond me? Dick Cheney and his criminal coharts deserves to be prosecuted to the fullest of the law.
America executed torturers for waterboarding American prisoners of war. How can we as a country ignore it when our own citizens are guilty of the same crimes. Are we now hypocrites? We should never have disregard for the law. It is the standard we live by in America. If America ignores crimes that were committed, then we have no respect for the law and we have truely become a Nation of cowards.

"In a meeting with House Republicans at the White House Thursday, President Obama reminded the minority that the last time he reached out to them, they reacted with zero votes -- twice -- for his stimulus package. And then he reminded them again. And again. And again.
We Sure Loves Us Some Chicken: So Popeye's runs a special of five dollars for a bucket of chicken and runs out...Who do you think the media shows complaining about the lack of chicken? If you guessed black people you guessed right.
Yes, we do. Anybody ever fried chicken in the oven?
It makes the tastiest, tenderest friend chicken around.
Justice58
I haven't heard of oven fried chicken but I have heard of oven barbeque chicken!
rikyrah
Recipe please?
spirit_55z
Yes, I either bake it or use olive oil, herbs, and whole wheat bread crumbs. It's YUMMY!
Do you have any recipes to share?
rikyrah
I hear you, womanistmusings, but they advertised one thing, and didn't deliver. $5 for a bucket IS a deal. But, they went to the one in the Black neighborhood to film.
spirit_55z
Yes, they only filmed blacks rolling through the Popeye’s drive-through. Maybe they’re the neighborhood demographic. The reality is, they knew they were being filmed they wanted the chicken. It was an advertised as a special and Popeye's didn't deliver. Folks are hurting in hard economic times, and were counting on the bargin. Personally, I don't eat any fast food. It's not healthy.
I posted earlier on this. Popeye false advertised and the price is affordable in these economic times.
Really, I can't help but laugh, but he sad irony is the fast food is not healthly. I appreciated yesterday's thread on gardens.
Town
Popeye's didn't false advertise, they just ran out of chicken. Which is normal Popeye's operating procedure, to run out of chicken. I went by a Popeyes and the drive thru line was doubled up, wrapped around the building, and the line for the inside was out of the door. All the people complaining about they won't be back are probably in the Popeye's line right now as we speak.
spirit_55z
I stand corrected on false ad. I don't frequent fast food joints. It seems a disingenius and poor practice to run out of food.
No doubt that the same folks would continue to return to Popeyes. The food is fast, and the ingredients are quite addictive.
The point is that every single person that they chose to present as being upset was black. Don't tell me there was not a single irate white customer. They presented it as though only blacks eat chicken therefore upholding a racist stereotype.
Miranda
Sorry womanistmusings, but considering where a Popeye's is usually located, its very very plausible that there was not one white customer at all while the reporters where filming. I don't think I've ever even seen a white person in a Popeye's or a Church's.
There is more than one Popeyes in Rochester and they specifically chose to target the one in the black community and that speaks to their intention to play on racial stereotypes. They also knew how this would be construed and they went ahead anyways. I have been in my share of chicken joints and seen people of various races in them. The whole only black people eat chicken meme is racist.
LoL, you haven't missed anything at all. Church's is so culturally skewed toward "Us" that they once used Ester from Sanford&Son for their marketing campaigns.
spirit_55z
Dang, they used the "Watch it Sucker." lady!
Miranda
Oh snap! I remember that!
*dead*
Miranda
Yeah....a whole helluva lotta grease...LOL
spirit_55z
LOL! So, I can go buy a tub of lard, throw in some salt and Viola'
I can laugh now, but personally, Miranda, I've seen far too many of my relatives and patients meet their maker because they refused to modify or change dietary habits from generations past.
Miranda
OMG...there is this hole-the-wall place in Charlotte, NC (hope its still there for my next visit)..called "the Coffee Cup"...why do they use straight up LARD for cooking?? LOL Their breakfast is so darn good that the day of this marathon.....those white folks were running in with their numbers still pinned to their clothes to eat. On a Sat morning you can barely find a parking space within 3 blocks. Its the type of place that you should only eat once or twice a year because you know its bad for ya....anyplace that has "fatback" as a side item can't be GOOD.
Justice58
Dang,
Must be some good eating there?
Miranda
Oh its good....its real good...its "you will fall asleep in the chair" good..but its lethal. Its extremely lethal. More butter and fat than the law should allow.
spirit_55z
I hear you. Treat yourself to some lard bianually. That makes for a great billboard.
LOL! at the white marathoners. Damn, how could they eat that kind of food after running 26 miles.
If the marathon didn't kill them, the food would; talk about "THE ITIS."

So you guys remember the DHS report that came out about right wing extremism?
The FBI just arrested a guy who attended the Oklahoma tea parties. He was plotting to kill govt officials and had posted his plans and thoughts on twitter. His myspace page shows he was a radical and had clippings of PBO saying he was hypnotizing people through the television.
If he thought PBO was trying to hypnotize him via the television, he should have put on his mirrored sun glasses and his tin foil hat.

The VA hospitals werent properly cleaning and maintaining their equipment and possibly infected thousands of soldiers with HIV and other strands of diseases.
The VA said the problems with the endoscopic equipment had gone on for years, but were discovered in December when it learned the Murfreesboro facility wasn't following cleaning procedures the manufacturer recommended. It issued an internal alert for hospitals to check their procedures, and the problem at Augusta was discovered in January.
On Feb. 9, the VA announced a nationwide safety check of endoscopic equipment used in colonoscopies and ear, nose and throat treatments. The procedure involves a narrow, flexible tube fitted with a fiber-optic device such as a telescope or magnifying lens that is inserted into the body.
Some veterans were warned in February to get tested, and more were alerted in March when the Miami hospital backtracked on its previous conclusion that it didn't have a problem.
fredman1
I think that VA hospitals are probably exempt from JCAHO (The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) standards and CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) standards because they are owned by the Federal Government.
spirit_55z
I think you are correct in that VA hosp are exempt from JCAHO standards, but they should and need an independent source for inspections.
Justice58
Beyond The Pale!!!!!!!!!!!
spirit_55z
Clearly, Justice. This equipment goes in folks body cavities.
It's disgusting, not to have folks cognizant enough to be hyper vigilent in propelyr cleaning the equipment.
It's one thing for veterans to go to war and put their lives on the line in battle; it's another for them to come home and risk their lives in these clusterfuck VA facilities. It's shameful and heads need to ROLL.
Justice58
Spirit,
You couldn't have said it any better. This is some wretched sh&t. These soldiers are already wounded from serving their country and have to put up with this kind of despicable care is beyond outrage. It is a shame before God!
spirit_55z
"The VA said the problems with the endoscopic equipment had gone on for years, but were discovered in December when it learned the Murfreesboro facility wasn't following cleaning procedures the manufacturer recommended."
Endoscopic & colonoscopy equipment should be STERILIZED after each patient.
This is Criminal, really it its. All hospitals should go through yearly inspections, and if they don't pass, the facility SHOULD be given a timeline to correct the deficiencies or it get SHUTDOWN. A qualified inspector would ask what are the proper cleaning procedures for the equipment, and staff would need to provide it in writing. Clearly the hospital and inspectors dropped the ball on this.
FYI: Hospitals are not required to report mistakes that expose patients to infectious diseases. Staff in the hospitals are encouraged to report if there is any kind of outbreak to the Public Health Service.
CRIMINAL & UNACCEPTABLE

EPIC FAIL

this reminds me of walter reed. no one knew what was going on and it just kept taking place. i think 3 or 4 generals were fired because of that. It amazes me how a nation so adamant about saying lets protect and support our troops dont protect and support our troops when they come back. i leave for OCS May 28th, ill be joining the Marine Corps Reserves and this is whats disheartening. All that other political crap does nothing. But this this lowers morale
Welcome Back, Chicago Way! Ben Nelson SMACKED by President Obama by mka193 [Subscribe] Share this on Twitter - Welcome Back, Chicago Way! Ben Nelson SMACKED by President Obama Fri Apr 24, 2009 at 04:18:25 PM PDT We are approaching 100 days of the Obama administration and things are about to really get cooking now. I have been waiting for the gloves to come off and for the Conservadems and Rethuglicans to start getting their noses punched. Well it looks like the fight is ON!
mka193's diary :: :: It appears that President Obama has decided to make an end run around Ben Nelson to end the bank subsidies for student lending. Nelson is none too happy about this. Ryan Grim of Huff Po reports:
It might not be the most glamorous hill, but it's the one that Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) has vowed to die on. President Obama, however, isn't going to give him that chance.
Nelson is perhaps the Senate's fiercest protector of subsidies for student lending institutions, which, not coincidentally, are an engine of job growth in Nebraska. He has vowed to block any effort to reduce those subsidies. And given that Democrats have 58 members and generally need 60 to break a GOP filibuster, he can enforce his will on his colleagues.
An agreement struck between the president and House and Senate negotiators won't give Nelson that chance. A process known as "reconciliation" allows budgetary measures to be moved through the Senate with a simple majority, rather than 60. Multiple congressional sources say that congressional Democrats have decided to use reconciliation to go after student-lending subsidies, specifically to get around Nelson.
I just get the feeling, that despite the directives by The President and First Lady, the White House Staff can't help themselves: they just wanna spoil Malia and Sasha.
caribgirl
So many of the White House Staff are African American and to have a black first family must be a heady feeling for them. Especially one that is so respectful and down-to-earth. It must be hard for them not to spoil that entire family. That man must see them as his grandkids.
