SONY PICTURES ACQUIRES ED NORTON'S "OBAMA" Documentary"
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired all media rights internationally (excluding U.K. TV) and domestic home entertainment rights to the documentary "By the People: The Election of Barack Obama."
Produced by Edward Norton's Class 5 Films and directed by Amy Rice and Alicia Sams, the previously untitled pic will see U.S. theatrical distribution via HBO Documentary Films.
Film follows the former Illinois senator from the announcement of his candidacy to his historic election and inauguration. Told through exclusive footage of Obama and his staff, "By the People" is touted as an all-access pass to campaign life on the road to the White House.
"From the start, it was very important to us to share this film with as broad an international audience as possible, and we're really thrilled to be partnered with Sony in trying to achieve this," Norton said.
Sony Pictures Television is handling sales for TV outside the U.S. and U.K., mobile and new media.
Film was financed by Good, Green Film Co., Citi Prods. and Class 5 Films.

Lose the 'Business'; Save the News? The Liberal Media By Eric Alterman This article appeared in the April 27, 2009 edition of The Nation. April 8, 2009
The New York Times is losing millions and threatening to close the Boston Globe. The Washington Post is living off the profits of its sister business, an educational testing-prep company. Chicago's two newspapers are in Chapter 11, together with the Los Angeles Times. The San Francisco Chronicle may disappear entirely. These are in America's largest, most sophisticated cities. If they cannot support a profitable newspaper, then no place can.
Today is the first Easter egg roll for the Obamas, and true to expected First Family style, they're going big with the event.
The Obamas are hosting 30,000 people from 45 states and the District of Columbia. That's a ton of egg rollers -- in fact, that's about 10,000 more than have been at past White House egg rolls. Despite the expanded number, the Obamas will be using the same crowd-control system from the past: ticket holders get two hour time slots to play on the White House lawn before they are ushered out and the next group comes in. With 10,000 more guests this year, the Obamas are going to be putting on an interesting logistics display. You can try to watch it live here since the Obamas will be streaming the event for the first time. Remember, they're not just ushering adults through. Most of this group is aged fifteen and under!
The Obamas brought on another big change this year by distributing the tickets online. A couple reports, including this one from The Washington Post, cited some angry rollers, mainly Washington area residents, who had lost their local advantage of being able to wait in person to get the tickets. It appears the the White House tried to ameliorate the situation by allocating 4,000 tickets to local area students. The Obamas also gave out 2,500 tickets to military families. The special tickets that have received the most attention this year are those for gay and lesbian families. In 2006, gay and lesbian families were accused of "crashing" the White House Easter roll. This time the Obamas made a special effort to invite them.
Check out a slideshow of the Obamas at the egg roll.

The Bush Six to Be Indicted by Scott Horton
Spanish prosecutors will seek criminal charges against Alberto Gonzales and five high-ranking Bush administration officials for sanctioning torture at Guantanamo. By Scott Horton.
Spanish prosecutors have decided to press forward with a criminal investigation targeting former U.S. attorney general Alberto Gonzales and five top associates over their role in the torture of five Spanish citizens held at Guantánamo, several reliable sources close to the investigation have told The Daily Beast.
Their decision is expected to be announced on Tuesday before the Spanish central criminal court, the Audencia Nacional, in Madrid. But the decision is likely to raise concerns with the human rights community on other points: they will seek to have the case referred to a different judge.
President Barack Obama welcomed thousands of children and families to the White House Easter Egg Roll Monday, calling it "one of the greatest White House traditions."
Shortly after kicking off the event, the first family walked to the storytime stage to read to a group of children. Entering the area, Obama shook hands with many of the children in the front row.
The president read "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak, which he called "one of my favorite books." He stood in front of the seated children, slowly rotating the book, so that everyone could see the pictures.
Obama pointed to one picture in the book and said, "That's a wild thing. It's like a dragon-looking thing." At one point, he got the group of children to try staring without blinking their eyes. One little girl's eyes were so big the President started laughing.
Mr. Obama asked the children if they had ever been in a "wild rumpus" like the book was describing. As he read about the imaginary beasts in the book and the adventures of the book's main character (a little boy named Max wearing a wolf suit), Mr. Obama howled and spoke in a monster voice.
"You guys look like you have a wild rumpus all the time," he told the kids.
At the end of the story he asked, "Are there any wild things here? I just want to make sure," and issued a soft wild thing-like growl along with the cheering of the crowd.
Next, Mrs. Obama and her mother took turns reading "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie," by Laura Joffe Numeroff . The first daughters turned the pages of an oversized copy of the book to show the illustrations. Story continues below
And I love his facial expressions when looks around the crowd of kids. You can tell he's spent many nights reading this story to his daughters before bed!

Not a problem at all. I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of the folks who criticized Michelle Obama for not supporting "American" designers.
Their definition of "American" was just twisted. As if the older, more well known designers weren't also American. There was a comment (can't remember where right now) of a woman complaining that all of Mrs O's designers were 'foreign' and not American like Laura Bush's designers.

Douglass's new post will focus entirely on the health care overhaul, showing "we are ramping up our media campaign as we move toward the president's goal of enacting health reform this year," the source said.

Rock music producer Phil Spector was convicted Monday of second-degree murder in the shooting death of a film actress at his mansion six years ago, a verdict that will send him to prison for at least 18 years barring a successful appeal.
A Superior Court jury returned the verdict after about 30 hours of deliberations. The jury had the option of choosing involuntary manslaughter, but did not do so.
The panel also found Spector guilty of using a firearm in committing a crime.
Spector exhibited no reaction to the verdict. His attorney argued that he should remain free on bail pending the May 29 sentencing, but Judge Larry Paul Fidler remanded him to jail immediately.
Second-degree murder carries a penalty of 15 years to life in prison. The use-of-a-gun enhancement adds three, four or 10 years in prison, according to the district attorney's office.
Defense attorney Doron Weinberg said he believed the case was swayed by the judge's erroneous rulings, particularly one that allowed five women from Spector's past to testify. He said it would be the basis for appeal and a request for a new trial.
Spector's young wife, Rachelle, sobbed as the decision was announced. It was Spector's second trial. The first jury deadlocked 10-2, favoring conviction in 2007.
The 40-year-old Lana Clarkson, star of the 1985 cult film "Barbarian Queen," died of a gunshot fired in her mouth as she sat in the foyer of Spector's mansion in 2003. She met Spector only hours earlier at her job as a nightclub hostess. Story continues below

Court Declares Franken Got More Votes A Minnesota court has confirmed that Democrat Al Franken won the most votes in his 2008 Senate race against Republican Norm Coleman.
Monday's ruling isn't expected to be the final word because Coleman previously announced plans to appeal to the state Supreme Court. He has 10 days to do so. That appeal could mean weeks more delay in seating Minnesota's second senator.
After a statewide recount and seven-week trial, Franken stands 312 votes ahead. Franken actually gained more votes from the election challenge than Coleman, the candidate who brought it.
The state law Coleman sued under merely required three judges to determine who got the most votes and is therefore entitled to an election certificate. That critical certificate is on hold pending appeal.
Republican National Chairman Michael S. Steele has launched a direct attack on President Obama in a new mass mailing, accusing the president of being part of the "blame America first" crowd, The Washington Times has learned.
Criticized by some in the party for not taking on the Democratic president hard enough or often enough, Mr. Steele took the gloves off in a fund-raising letter sent out Monday to 12 million party supporters. Recipients included RNC donors as well as the mailing lists of two conservative organizations, Human Events and GOPUSA, according to RNC communications director Trevor Francis.
Mr. Steele wrote that Mr. Obama's comments criticizing the United States on his recent European tour showed "an absence of wisdom."
Mr. Steeles letter also slammed the Democratic president for saying he was open to possible talks with Iran. Apparently, he believes he can make peace with crackpot tyrants and heartless terrorists simply by sitting down and talking, the Steele letter said.
The RNC letter noted that Mr. Obama while in Europe had said the United States has displayed "arrogance" at times in its foreign policy. But Mr. Steele said it was the former senator from Illinois who was "arrogant" when he "boasted his election would be remember as the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal."
He said the president showed similar arrogance earlier when he "indicated disdain for small town and working Americans who 'cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who arent like them.'"
Only toward the end of the letter does it become evident that it is an appeal for donations to the RNC.

Over five months after the election, a three-judge panel has declared Democrat Al Franken the winner of the Minnesota U.S. Senate race.
The judges issued their final ruling late Monday, stating "Franken received the highest number of lawfully cast ballots in the Nov. 4, 2008 general election."
They also have determined that Franken is entitled to receive the certificate of election.
The election certificate is a big wildcard. We know that the this decision will be appealed to the state Supreme Court. Will the Supremes issue an injunction to block the issuance of the certificate of election? Will Pawlenty refuse to sign it? And what role will the federal courts play after Coleman inevitably runs out of appeal courts in Minnesota?
Update: MinnPost's Eric Black games out how this will play out:
The likeliest outcome -- no matter whether Team Coleman takes their case to the U.S. Supreme Court and/or tries to get a fresh start in federal district court -- is that Franken will be seated in the Senate in roughly May or June.

Goldman Sachs, in another sign that banks may be turning around, beat Wall Street's earnings expectations as it reported a profit of $1.66 billion for the first three months of this year. The bank also said it planned to raise $5 billion in stock to help it pay back government bailout funds.
The New York-based bank said it earned $3.39 per share, easily surpassing analysts' forecasts for profit of $1.64 per share. This compares with earnings of $1.47 billion, or $3.23 per share, in the quarter ended Feb. 29 of last year, and is a huge improvement over the $2.29 billion Goldman lost in the fourth quarter.
Goldman's news, released a day earlier than anticipated, came days after another top-performing bank, Wells Fargo & Co., said it expected to report record first-quarter earnings of $3 billion, well above Wall Street's estimates. That news fed a huge stock market rally Thursday, but with companies including Citigroup Inc. and Bank of America Corp. still to report their first-quarter results, it's too soon to say the banking industry is indeed finally recovering from the devastating losses caused by the credit crisis and the recession.
Investors showed some caution after Goldman's announcement, which followed the close of regular trading on Wall Street. Goldman shares initially rose in response to its report but then slipped 1.5 percent. Citigroup, which surged 25 percent during regular trading, rose a more modest 1 percent in after-hours activity while Bank of America rose 0.7 percent after jumping 15 percent during regular trading. Morgan Stanley fell 3.3 percent in late trading after jumping 6 percent during regular hours.
Morningstar Inc. equity analyst Michael Wong said Goldman benefited from the fact that it has more traditional investment banking and trading operations than more retail-focused banks like Citi and Bank of America.
"What allowed Goldman to outperform is solely tied to their brokerage operations," he said.
Still, Goldman's first-quarter performance put it in a strong enough position to plan the public stock offering of $5 billion which it said would be used, with additional resources, to pay back its government debt. Goldman received $10 billion in government funds during the downturn last fall as part of the U.S. Treasury Department's program to invest directly in hundreds of banks and try and help alleviate the nearly frozen credit markets.
Goldman executives have said for months that the company wanted to repay bailout funds this year, and last month, company spokesman Lucas Van Praag said the main reason Goldman wanted to return the money is that it doesn't need the funds. Story continues below

One, the taxpayers gave them the money via the AIG bailout: http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2009/04/taxpayer-f... Two, they moved their reporting date. They changed it so the month of Dec is not included in the current quarter so you do not even know if the quarter comparasions are the same: "The company, which changed its fiscal year to end in December instead of November, also reported results for the month of December today. They showed the bank lost $780 million, or $2.15 per share, as losses in fixed-income trading and principal investments overwhelmed revenue from other units." When they took TARP money they had to become a bank. It will be interesting to see if they give up the bank charter after they raise the money to pay the taxpayer back.

The Corporate Lobbyists Behind the Tea Parties
Why all the effort to distance themselves from the teabaggers? It's obvious they are integrally involved -- Fox has given them millions in free publicity, despite the fact that there's no evidence of "ratings gold" here. Four of their biggest stars will be appearing at the rallies, Fox Nation will be hosting a "virtual tea party," Glenn Beck is holding a $500 a plate fundraiser for them and Fox has been officially promoting the entire affair as the FNC Tax Day Tea Parties:
Maybe they're afraid that if people knew that those behind the demonstrations were the very same lobbyists and influence peddlers the teabaggers claim to decry, the whole thing would be revealed to be what it is -- a hollow excercise in extremist right-wing hypocrisy.
I wish these "corporate lobbyists" had made themselves available back in Feb.-March, when we started planning here.
I'd've been glad to let them foot the bill, instead of my organizers having to raise money for everything. And we damn sure could've used the help in running down how to get permits and all.
Oh, well. Maybe next time.
