+ Obama Approval at 69%; US Split Over Memos

As he nears the 100-day mark, President Obama’s approval ratings remain high at 69%, a Washington Post-ABC News poll finds—but the recent release of torture memos has sparked a major partisan split. Just over half of those polled back the release; three-quarters of Dems support it, while about the same proportion of Republicans oppose it. Half of independents support the decision; 46% are against it.

The country is also split over whether the officials implicated in the memos should face a probe: 51% say yes, 47% no, with 70% of Dems backing such a move and 70% of Republicans opposing it. Support is high for Obama’s work on the economy, and majorities say he’s beaten their expectations, achieved a great deal, and kept promises. Some 72% have a “favorable impression” of the president, but many were concerned about his handling of the budget deficit, immigration, and automakers.

Hey Mudpuppies! Snoskred here with an exciting announcement.

When AKMuckraker was “outed” many mudpuppies searched for ways to show their support of both AKMuckraker and The Mudflats. For many of us, the usual outlets did not feel sufficient to express what the community means to us.

The forum staff talked about it, and the idea for I Heart The Mudflats was born.

I Heart The Mudflats is a new blog, separate from The Mudflats. It provides an opportunity for mudpuppies to guest blog in many different ways. The blog will not be written by any one person – it will be written by all of us as a community.

The I Heart The Mudflats site looks very different to The Mudflats – for example, the colors are totally different, we have two columns in the sidebar- we chose to do that deliberately so no mudpuppy would get confused.

Over the past week, we have posted some content so that you will have plenty to read when you visit the new site.

The president addresses the National Academy of Sciences# Monday morning.

His first address on science and technology in office.

# Obama to Address National Academy of Sciences

On Monday, President Barack Obama will give his first speech on science and technology since taking office 3 months ago. The venue will be the annual meeting of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.

“The National Academy is the country's paramount scientific organization,” presidential science adviser John Holdren told ScienceInsider. “So it just makes sense for him to go there.”

Obama will be following in the footsteps of Presidents Kennedy, Carter, and George H.W. Bush in addressing members of the academy at their annual meeting. Bill Clinton also spoke at the academy's headquarters, which look out on the National Mall and the Lincoln Memorial. Holdren declined to offer details of the president's speech, although he reiterated Obama's promise in his inaugural address to “restore science to its rightful place.”
