When I went to Hong Kong a few years ago, I couldn't believe all the print and TV ads I saw for skin lighteners. And to dovetail on your point about the darker skinned Asians, a lot of Filipino women work in Hong Kong as maids or in other menial jobs. They work long hours and they only get Sundays off, which they spend literally camped out in the center of town. Thousands of the women congregate in the parks, subway concourses, skywalks on blankets and chairs just to picnic, play cards, and catch up on each others lives. Fascinated me because I had never seen anything like that, and even more amazed that passerby didn't bother or harass the women like you know would happen here.

It was not about Obama's ancestors, but rather what his election symbolism based on AMERICA's racial history.

Obama's gift from Brown was not personal it was recognition of one country's history vs. another country's history. Which is where Obama's gift missed the boat, it was solely personal it failed to have significance based on his position as the leader of the free world.

The anti-slavery ship was appropriate in terms of the USA history on race and the historical significance of Obama being elected despite that racial history. Whereas, he himself was not a descendant of slaves, his election to the Presidency is historical for solely the role of slavery in American history.

Ergo, it was a recognition of America's history and how Obama has transcend that.

In terms of symbolism it was a verywell thought out gift from one nation to another.

The PRESIDENT Obama was not to give a gift 'as friends' it should have been a gift from THE NATION in recognition of another head of state. Obama was to represent the USA not himself.

The children's gifts were a much better choice, as they did at least symbolize AMERICA's Presidency while at the same time being age appropriate.
