Today, Vice President Biden, U.S. Transportation Secretary LaHood, and Miami Mayor Diaz announced the availability of $8.4 billion in public transportation investments from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to states and local transportation authorities to repair and build America's public transportation infrastructure.
"All over the country, resources are being put to work not only creating jobs now – but also investing in the future. A future that strengthens our transit system, makes us more energy efficient and increases safety," said Vice President Joe Biden. Biden commuted by train from Delaware to Washington, DC daily while he was a US Senator.
Our current automobile habits account for a substantial part of our nation’s carbon dioxide emissions. Public transportation projects like the ones that will be funded with this major investment, help the United States meet some of the daunting environmental challenges facing our nation and the world.
Access to mass-transit also helps by providing a wider range of work options to those who don’t own their own vehicles. "Investments in public transportation put people to work, but they also get people to work in a way that moves us towards our long term goals of energy security and a better quality of life," said Secretary LaHood. The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) has found that every billion invested in federally aided public transportation capital projects supports 30,000 jobs.

DAILY GUIDANCE AND PRESS SCHEDULE FOR FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 2009
Tomorrow morning, President Obama will then travel to Columbus, Ohio. He will be accompanied by Attorney General Eric Holder. The President will receive the Presidential Daily Briefing en route to Ohio. The departure from the South Lawn is open press. His arrival at Port Columbus International Airport is open press.
The President will deliver remarks at the Columbus Police Graduation Exercises. The 25 Columbus police recruits graduating Friday learned in January that instead of being sworn-in as officers, they would be let go. rikyrah: THESE PICS R 2 DIE 4!!! :>) I went lookin' 4 PIC of Sir Ted - - The "LION" and found these!:
A day that was designed to produce conversation and cohesion on reforming the health care system ended with an emotional pitch.
President Barack Obama, concluding a summit with leaders from Congress, the non-profit world, the medical and the insurance industries, entered the closing session at the East Room of the White House with a guest by his side.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the voiced boomed over the loudspeaker, "the president of the United States accompanied by Senator Ted Kennedy."
The crowd of roughly 150 guests jumped to its feet in approval. Suffering from brain cancer and confined, largely, to a home in Florida, the Liberal Lion's mere presence in the Washington struck an emotional chord. Kennedy didn't disappoint. Introduced by the president as "Sir Edward Kennedy" - an ode to the knighting the Senator recently received from the Queen of England - the long-time health care champion waxed optimistically about this moment in history.
"I join with all of those who feel that this is the time, now is the time for action," he said. "I think most of us who have been in this room before have seen other times when the House and the senate have made efforts. But they haven't been the kind of serious effort that we are seeing right now. If you look over his gathering here today you see the representatives of all the different groups that we have met with over the period of years...That has not been the case over the history of the past going all the way back to Harry Truman time. But it is the case now. And it is I think a tribute to your leadership in bringing all these people together."
Another applause ensued. Kennedy, looking thinner than in the past, his hair still full and gray, sat to the president's left as other officials were called upon to speak. Several offered tributes to the Massachusetts Democrat.
"Senator Kennedy will not be a foot soldier in this battle," said Rep. Henry Waxman. "He has been an inspiration for all of use."
"To Sen. Kennedy," Rep. Charlie Rangel later declared, "this has been a fantastic day."
Watch:
The emotions of the moment were only mildly interrupted by the business at hand. Obama declined to get into the specifics of the health care debate, choosing instead to frame the day as the launching pad for a wide-ranging discussion. But he did lay down some markers on where the topic would go. There would be, he noted, some things that even "Newt Gingrich and Ted Kennedy" could agree on. And then there would need to be sacrifices on the progressive and conservative fronts.
"To all your liberal bleeding hearts out there, don't think that we can solve this problem without tackling costs. And that may make some on the progressive community uncomfortable," said Obama. "On the flip side, I say to those who are obsessed with costs, and this goes to the issue of Medicare and Medicaid reform as well, I don't think that as a bottom line as a means of protecting costs it means you can throw seniors off Medicare, for example."

If You Could Ask the White House One Question... Posted by Al Giordano - March 5, 2009 at 1:50 pm By Al Giordano
With the caveat that it's not easy being a White House reporter, and nor is it easy being their babysitter the White House Press Secretary, I'm frequently startled by how those veteran reporters for the biggest news organizations on earth so often ask questions that are useless because they will always be answered in predictable ways.
Take this Q & A from the transcript of White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs' March 3 press briefing, for example:
Nicole Richie and Joel Madden are planning to wed after learning they're expecting their second child. Showbiz Spy reports that Nicole has had a wedding dress "hanging in the back of her closet" in hopes the couple would "make it legal." Looks like baby number two might make her wish come true. Go Judge! Make them pay.........
"Judge assails cases doubting Obama's citizenship By NEDRA PICKLER – 4 hours ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday threw out a lawsuit questioning President Barack Obama's citizenship, lambasting the case as a waste of the court's time and suggesting the plaintiff's attorney may have to compensate the president's lawyer.
In an argument popular on the Internet and taken seriously practically nowhere else, Obama's critics argue he is ineligible to be president because he is not a "natural-born citizen" as the Constitution requires.
In response last summer, Obama's campaign posted his Hawaiian birth certificate on its Web site. But the lawsuit argues it is a fake and that Obama was actually born in his father's homeland of Kenya, even though Hawaiian officials have said the document is authentic.
"This case, if it were allowed to proceed, would deserve mention in one of those books that seek to prove that the law is foolish or that America has too many lawyers with not enough to do," U.S. District Judge James Robertson said in his written opinion.
The lawsuit didn't even use Obama's legal name but called him "Barry Soetoro," the name he went by while attending elementary school in Indonesia. It's one of many that has been filed claiming Obama is ineligible to serve as president.
Robertson ordered plaintiff's attorney John Hemenway of Colorado Springs, Colo., to show why he hasn't violated court rules barring frivolous and harassing cases and shouldn't have to pay Obama's attorney, Bob Bauer, for his time arguing that the case should be thrown out."

But to hold him responsible for a market collapse on day 41 of his Presidency — following 8 years of gross negligence and ruinous incompetency under the Bush regime — is simply too much stupidity for any damaged nation to bear." I have not been impressed by Tim Geithner either.

rikyrah: LAWD - - I'm GLAD that someone did this research!! :>) :>) I did NOT have the time. :>)
I'm trying to PRESENT the NUMBERS. You can read the author's ANALYSIS at your leisure. :>)
Since President George W. Bush has, by some measures, had the most diverse cabinet in U.S. history, I thought it would be interesting to compare President-elect Obama's picks for the cabinet to see how they compare just on this one measure. I'm not talking ideological diversity here. I intend to reflect on that at some point. I'm simply talking about the standard kinds of diversity usually intended when people use the word, and the only ones I've ever heard people discuss with the cabinet are race/ethnicity and sex/gender. I'll go position by position. I'm only including full appointments with Senate confirmation, not acting secretaries. I'm also only counting cabinet secretaries, since the precise list of which other positions are in the cabinet varies with each president.
Now I want to look at a few numbers, and I'm going to focus on the period since the first presidential election I voted in, which was 1992. I want to look at the percentage of cabinet appointees who were of each group in the initial cabinet of Clinton, Bush, and Obama, and I'm going to look at the development in the subsequent appointments of Clinton and Bush. In line of succession order, Clinton's initial cabinet was:
white man white man white man white woman white man white man black man white man Arab American woman Hispanic man Hispanic man black woman white man black man
I'm counting Hispanic as non-white. Yes, I'm fully aware of the complexity of that issue, but my point here is to look at underrepresented minority groups, not to capture exactness of race and ethnicity.
78.6% men 57.1% white 21.4% black 21.4% women 14.3% Hispanic 7.1% Arab American
Notice the bottom-heavy location of most of the women and all of the non-whites.
If you look at Clinton's whole cabinet over both terms, you get the following lineup:
white man, white woman three white men three white men white woman white man black man, white man black man, two white men, Asian American man white man, black woman Arab American woman Hispanic man, white man Hispanic man, black man black woman, two Hispanic men white man two black men
The bottom-heavy nature remains, but it's less bottom-heavy overall than it was initially. But if you look at the actual numbers, it becomes clear that Clinton's cabinet overall got less diverse over the course of his whole presidency than his initial cabinet was.
82.8% men (more than initially) 55.17% white (fewer than initially) 17.2% black (fewer than initially) 17.2% women (fewer than initially) 13.8% Hispanic (fewer than initially) 3.4% Arab American (fewer than initially) 3.4% Asian American (more than initially)
Bush's initial cabinet:
black man white man white man white man white woman white woman white man Asian American woman white man Hispanic man Asian American man Arab American man black man white man
78.6% men 57.1% white 21.4% women 14.3% black 14.3% Asian American 7.1% Arab American 7.1% Hispanic
The numbers are like Clinton's first cabinet, except he's traded a black and a Hispanic for two Asian Americans. But there's one noticeable difference. The center of gravity of non-whites and women seems a little higher, especially of women but also a little with race/ethnicity, in part because the top spot is now a black man, and only half of the top six are white men, whereas five of them were white men under Clinton. The top three under Clinton were all white. Bush now had a black man in the top cabinet secretary spot, which is a big deal given how the top of Clinton's initial cabinet looked.
The total for Bush's two terms is:
black man, black woman three white men two white men white man, Hispanic man, white man white woman, white man white woman, two white men white man, Hispanic man initially Hispanic woman but withdrawn; Asian American woman two white men Hispanic man, black man, white man Asian American man, white woman Arab American man, white man black man, white woman three white men three white men
82.9% men 54.3% white 17.1% women 11.4% black 8.6% Hispanic 5.7% Asian American 2.9% Arab American
Now look at Obama's initial cabinet:
white woman white man white man black man Hispanic man white man initially Hispanic man but withdrawn; undetermined for now Hispanic woman white man white man white man Asian American man white man Asian American man white woman
78.6% men 64.2% white 21.4% women 14.3% Asian American 14.3% Hispanic 7.1% black
It seems the pattern is "choose someone black."
Lookin' 4 the pattern!??? ***shrug*** ***raised eyebrows***

He was very emotional. It even made me cry. It always gets to me when seniors who have been together for decades lose their partners, or are at the point when they realize their time is near. Larry King will be about Chris Brown tonight.
spirit_55z
The panel on Larry King want Rihanna to be the poster girl for DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.
pjamma
Someone needs to be. Maybe she can do something in conjunction with Cover Girl since she is on contract about no amount of make-up can cover up domestic abuse.
Monie
Here is an "official" report of the Chris Brown and Rihanna incident. Damn.
I have never been in an abusive relationship. I sensed one guy could go there but that was nipped in the bud real quick. But there are people, a lot of people, that accept this as normal behavior. And I don't get it.
I had a sorority sister that was addicted to this guy who was violent. It made her feel like he really loved her because he would get so upset with her. At times she would provoke him. The violence wasn't as bad as in this report but there was a lot of grabbing, shaking, bruising and humiliating. It became tiring dealing with her crying, saying she would never get back with him only to find they were back together 24 hours later.
Why do people stay in these relationships? Is there an actual definable personality that likes this kind of, for lack of better word, drama?
And even more concerning, going back to my sorority sister, even though her boyfriends actions were well known he was still very popular with the guys and girls on campus (he was a light skinned, light eye, good hair brother after all). It seemed like it was accepted and normal.
They stay because the abuser commonly isolates the victim, has devastated them emotionally and promises to change. It takes a batter woman between 10-12 times to leave. Let us not forget some men will also threaten to kill the victim if they leave as well.
Justice58
Womanistmusings,
Some that are poor stay because they're afraid because of no finances to support themselves. Afraid they can't make it on their own. I knew a girl from school that changed completely from the person I knew.
He beat her like a man. Finally, they split and he tried the same crap with another woman in Houston, Texas. Guess what? She shot him. He didn't die but he got a big fat ass wake-up call.
Thanks. Chris Brown damned near tried to kill her.
And yet Diddy was hawking "No Bitchassness" shirts a while back, but supposedly had them reconciling at his home...anyone condoning this behavior and hoping to have the couple mend their relationship after this incident is full of it.
F-ck record sales, F-ck image...the description of what transpired is horrible and sad. Honestly, I could care less if Chris Brown sold another CD..he beat her like she was another man.
spirit_55z
Co-sign! Chris Brown threatened to KILL Rihanna. And anyone condoning the BEATDOWN is sick and needs help.

Offhand there at least 2 African American Surgeon Generals that have been selected. AT LEAST.
There have probably been more black, and probably at least 2 other ethnicities as well.
Town
Other presidents choose fellow white people for positions and nobody has anything to say.
BUT if Obama chooses a black person, OH NOEZ HEAVENS TO BETSYS he must be choosing them cuz they black!
And I say, so what if he did?
Since there have been at least 2 African American Surgeon Generals already, what would be the big deal in having another one, even if that person came from an HBCU?
Justice58
BUT if Obama chooses a black person, OH NOEZ HEAVENS TO BETSYS he must be choosing them cuz they black!
Town,
I'm so tired of that crap. I agree, so what if he does.. Why is it second guessed with President Obama? F-ing tired of the bull. Let him choose whomever the ___ he wants.
Barack should only choose a half-white/ half black kenyan from muslim roots, that has now converted to christianity..
I demand it.
Mothsmoke
So a physician who happens to be at an HBCU can't serve the "entire U.S.A.?" "The pattern" is to chose someone qualified. Each of the people mentioned by Rikyrah meets this qualification. If they happen to be from HBCUs so be it.
pjamma
If they meet the requirements then they should be on the short list with the others from WHO/CDC for consideration. If after vetting there is a tie, as Chris Rock says, the tie goes to black guy.
I doubt that's the problem -- its more that' everyone has ties to the current market implosion -- it limits where you can get people willing to take the pay-cut to come to government work.
rikyrah
Need Culinary help.
Is there something you can do with French Onion Soup? Someone gave me a bag full of it. I don't like it because it's too salty for me as a soup on its own. Is there something I can make with French Onion soup? A stew or something ?
Make a roux with butter and flower, add soup, throw in some red wine and a dash of sugar to cut the saltiness, cook to desired thickness. Serve on any meat, of course, brown rice, potatoes, biscuits or even steamed vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and asparagus. Freeze the rest in small enough portions that you can thaw and use for individual servings.
(This will only work if it's already prepared and not dried. If it's dried the other suggestions will do just fine.)

BREAKING NEWS FROM WAPO SANJA GUOTA WITHDRAWS NAME
Cast of Characters Gupta Steps Aside By Michael D. Shear and Howard Kurtz
Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, will not leave his television career to become the U.S. surgeon general, he told network officials, according to sources familiar with his decision.
Gupta, who had been the leading candidate for the post, withdrew his name even as President Obama hosted a health care summit at the White House. Gupta did not attend.
There was not immediate word to explain his decision. Sources had confirmed weeks ago that Obama had offered the job to Gupta and that the neurosurgeon had intended to take it. At the time, sources said Gupta would leave his network job for the government post.
But no further progress was evident, especially after Obama's first choice for secretary of health and human services, former senator Tom Daschle, was derailed by tax problems.
Gupta was never officially named to the post and continued to report on CNN during the last several weeks.
Sources said Gupta told CNN executives that he wanted to devote more time to his medical practice and to his duties at the network.
