Take a look at this blog piece. It is about one of the problems we have in winning hearts and minds in Afghanistan and solving the problem. As President Obama has made Afghanistan a focus of our foreign/military policy its a good place to start. http://www.d-n-i.net/dni/2009/02/24/on-war-293-...

Buh-bye Gov Huntsman...you're about to get silenced....see ya!
Huntsman takes aim at GOP
He has little use for the congressional wing of his party and believes their arguments often fall on deaf ears beyond Washington. “We will be irrelevant as a party until we become the party of solutions and until we become the party of preeminence,” he said. “It’s easy to fall back on gratuitous rhetoric and that’s kind of what this town is all about.” To become viable again to the 40-and-under bloc that went overwhelmingly for President Obama and will comprise the future voting majority in the country, Huntsman argued the GOP must shift on two issues as generational as they are political: gay rights and the environment. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0309/19455...

Love me some Golden Girls. Been down for the count with the flu, most of the day.

Yes, I do too!! Those gals had GRIT and humor mixed right together...loved watching them.
BTW...can you tell me how I get to see the folks I follow comments? I clicked to follow folks but can't figure where you go to see their comments.
So someone raised an objection to my suggestion that folks are nitpicking on Michelle because they are having problems with the idea that the First Lady can be intelligent and sexy. On friendfeed, someone pointed out Jackie Kennedy and mentioned Audrey Hepburn - both women that I believe were stylish, elegant and graceful. But that does not automatically mean sexy in my eyes.
Was Jackie & Audrey considered sexy? Is there anything wrong with saying the First Lady is sexy or does that risk objectifying her?
JJP i hope you guys are ready to defend PBO because the other side is geering up to fight against change real hard. They want to protect the reagonomic theory of rich get richer and the poor stay poorer. Its only been 5 weeks and its not even cranked up yet, this health care fight is gonna be serious. enery independence serious. If you dont know what i mean you can see how everyone is talking about his budget which is truthful. For 40 years weve been asking these things and i guess people thought building a nuclear plant or green energy happened on its own and wouldnt cost anything. Naw PBO let us know if we wanted its going to cost and we will have to pay for what we want. http://www.newsday.com/business/ny-vpbud0160535...

Vast Rightwing Conspiracy to Torpedo Obama? by whenwego [Subscribe] Sat Feb 28, 2009 at 05:43:20 PM PST Remember Rick Santelli, he of the "Chicago Tea Party" fame? Some kind of options trader, he went on CNBC and ranted about how Obama was doing the country a vast disservice. Now it turns out that that rant was no accident, but part of a coordinated rightwing machine to stop Obama's reforms in their tracks.
I saw the original story yesterday that uncovered the not-so-coincidental ranting of Santelli...hopefully it picks up steam today (as I see it has, dailykos, crooks and liars and The Big Picture blogs all picked it up) - but I want to see a segment on Olbermann or Maddow's show to expose this.

From Booman Tribune:
Why Hope Obama Fails? by BooMan Sun Mar 1st, 2009 at 11:41:03 AM EST
Watching Meet the Press, I see Republican strategist Mike Murphy and former Republican Congressman Joe Scarborough saying that they are relieved that Obama has chosen to move to the left because they were afraid that he would move to the middle and, in so doing, destroy the Republican Party. It was left, ironically, to Harold Ford, Jr. to defend the president by pointing out that the poll numbers indicate that the nation wants to and is ready for a new direction. Meanwhile, earlier in the roundtable discussion, former Clinton press secretary Dee Dee Myers pointed out that the Clinton administration had made a strategic decision to attack Reaganomics but never to attack Ronald Reagan. And she admitted that the strategy had failed because you can't attack programs if the face of those programs remains popular.
Somewhere in the melding of these two worldviews there is a lesson to be learned. The Republicans are relieved that Obama is not moving to the Center because it means that they can keep their caucus fairly united in opposition. That's short-term thinking, but it makes sense. On the other hand, Obama is going after Bushism in a very direct way. He isn't repeating the mistake of the Clinton team. It's true that Obama doesn't face the same problem. Bush is far more unpopular right now than Reagan was when he left office. That means Obama can feel more comfortable making personal criticism, even as he remains more focused on policy. When he attacks Bush he tends to do it obliquely by talking about how we wants to hear opposing views and make sure he breaks out of the White House bubble. His policy criticisms are more withering.
The more interesting question is: what will Obama's approach do to the Republican Party? It seems to me that the centrist approach (on policy not tone) would have been inadequate for the economic times and would have led to an anemic recovery. It would have been a giant gamble to introduce a budget filled with cuts in government spending both because it wouldn't stimulate the economy and because it would disappoint Obama's base of support by going back on many of his campaign promises. That would have been a recipe for much lower poll numbers over time and a failed presidency.
And, from a Republican perspective, the more Obama succeeds in creating new programs for health, education, and energy, and the more he stimulates the economy, and the more he delivers on his campaign promises, the less viable their worldview will be as a national or statewide electoral strategy. In other words, Republicans have to hope Obama will fail because he didn't make a move to the center where he would be almost assured of failure.
"Dee Dee Myers pointed out that the Clinton administration had made a strategic decision to attack Reaganomics but never to attack Ronald Reagan. And she admitted that the strategy had failed because you can't attack programs if the face of those programs remains popular. "
Well, that certainly explains the tactic of Rush hating on Obama?
I gotta tell you GLH...I am kinda perturbed with President Obama's edict not to play Hail to the Chief when he enters a room!!
I like protocol and it was one of the things I was looking forward to with him becoming President and all...seeing him get all that right righteous protocol treatment.
But our dear President doesn't like all this pomp&circumstance it seems and has nixed the Marine Band.
I think we need to write POTUS about this because he is the people's President and this is one of the things we do to establish his honorable status as the supreme leader of the free world so he cannot just simply do away with this.
I mean this is the man that used the Bulls sports announcer and their song at the JJ dinner while he was running to announce his entrance and now he has nixed Hailto the Chief? WTF?
The people need this kind of stuff to look forward to...especially in this dreary ass economy when we can't go out to shop....at least we could HUM Hail to the Chief...and look up at the TV...knowing we about to see one

The center in politics like life is not a fixed point. When the power of the executive branch becomes the only way policy debates become decided the President's point of view is the center, especially with economic issues. In a theorectical ideological world positions of the center, left and right become memes. That is what I took from Booman. This meme can be destroyed by President Obama as he turns/returns/coopts religious speech to the political/economic discussion(someone is going to have to help/clarify for me here as my knowledgeof the Judeo-Christian bible is poor).
Conservatism, as practised by Americans, rests in the realm of religious ideas in the west on divine rule by those favored by the church-you do not have to be royalty anymore and predestination. It is extended into all realms of life; education, politics, sociology. In the economic realm, since your fate was determined, you could live by the idea buyer beware in all realms of life. the downside was suffered only here on earth. This dynamic works at cross purposes with other economic notions, that could be called Liberal, in the Bible, such as teach a man to fish. These both ideas have been in conflict over the ages but in an post/industrial economy the conflict has heightened. this has not led to a resolution.
For Conservatives, the needs of teaching(education) for the greater good is for the predestined, i.e. they will find because of God's will. For liberals the idea of the greater good is to marshal resources to teach/educate everyone to the best of their ability. For President Obama this means money spent on education is to teach a man for a life time to feed himself. Money spent on health care reform means money not spent by creators of wealth on employees if they offer it-think how competetive that makes major industries w/ health plans. That means no lost production/effiencies because someone is concerned about the health of their sick (insert word). A taking care of your flock if you will.
What made MLK Jr such a threat(IMO) was not his discussion about race but when he began to talk about economic freedom(anticolonalism) and nationalism(Viet Nam) in these terms. This is the real fear Conservatives have; a lose of their divine given control. When the discussion becomes framed in tax increases, creeping socialism(they do not use socialism because that is what is going on with certain large financial institutions), debt, budget issues such as liabilities and assets the argument is framed in Conservative terms not Liberal ones. That is why President Obama is changing the terms and will be ultimately successful.
whiterosebuddy
"conservatism is a partially heritable personality trait that predisposes some people to be cognitively inflexible, fond of hierarchy, and inordinately afraid of uncertainty, change, and death. People vote Republican because Republicans offer "moral clarity"—a simple vision of good and evil that activates deep seated fears in much of the electorate."
Or what most of us call anal retentive folks!!
"When Republicans say that Democrats "just don't get it," this is the "it" to which they refer. Conservative positions on gays, guns, god, and immigration must be understood as means to achieve one kind of morally ordered society. When Democrats try to explain away these positions using pop psychology they err, they alienate, and they earn the label "elitist." But how can Democrats learn to see—let alone respect—a moral order they regard as narrow-minded, racist, and dumb?"
Haidt is cool as he puts out his opinion, but where correctly calls out the conservatives' unthinking imposition of their values , he claims that being liberal is not a moral position and also an imposition of values.
For me to say that the conservative is wrong is itself an imposition of my values. Ain't no middle ground. If you believe one thing, then, by definition, you don't believe something else. Not to be confused with the tolerance that we should all have for opposing belief.
I am glad though that he notes Christian Conservatives as a particular class of folks. They're wholly different and wholly antithetical to people who are just christians as defined by simply believing in Jesus and accepting his offer of reconciliation. The Christian Conservatives of today are yesterday's Pharisees, purposely conflating religion with political goals. These are the people who gave Jesus the most problems and who eventually railroaded him (they thought) to the cross. But he gave his life willingly.
Yeah - I posted it a couple of times - and wanted to post it ALL over the place.

Wow, that Esperanza was awesome....she looked stunning and her background is just stellar..
I have not ever been impressed by Diane Krall...just what does she bring to jazz?
Those background singers performing with stevie were rockin' it... Culture has come to the WH!!!
...btw..who was the couple next to President Obama?

Diana Krall's performance here made my ears bleed. Re: the background singers (and the band) you KNOW they wanted to bust loose! They were 'holding it in' because they were at the White House. But you know in concert, they really woulda been jammin!
whiterosebuddy
Yep. It was so funny looking at POTUS and FLOTUS being so still. Now, you know this is the most still they have EVER been while listening to Stevie!!
hahahaha!
Did you notice how POTUS&FLOTUS were clasping hands as McBride sang "YOU & I" their wedding song?
They gone have to adapt that public souless behavior of my catholic girlfriend when she comes to church and hears gospel...at first you can't tell that she has spirit cause she is so still (no feet tappin' head swayin or clappin) then I looked harder and noticed that although her hands were clasped and the fingers together as if in prayer..her middle fingers are tappin!!
I was like...um, um, um...when your spirit is that restricted life can't be much fun!!
Was Diana Krall the opera singer? If so, I have to agree that wasn't my favorite performance of the evening.
isonprize
No, Diana Krall was the white woman who was supposed to be singing a jazz version of a Stevie tune. She played the piano and sang along. It was horrible. really.
This is a beating drum; one more tale of how Made-offs actions have hurt the economy. The married couple had planned to retire in a few years, now they are taking care of one's mother. This is what happened to many people's retirement with the collapse of the stock market. so who is going to replace the spending of these people for many hotels, inns, tourist spots, et al. What is the downside to the economy from this?
Obama says his policies will help African-Americans hit hard by the downturn. Photo: AP
President Barack Obama told an annual forum on black America that his policies will make a “big difference” to African-Americans who are harder hit by the economic downturn than the rest of the nation.
"Tough times for America often mean tougher times for African Americans. This recession has been no exception," Obama said. “The unemployment rate among black Americans is a full five points higher than the rate among Americans as a whole. At the same time, we know that government cannot and will not succeed alone. It will take all of us stepping up and doing our part."
Obama skipped the State of Black America forum - the White House aides said his busy schedule required him to speak by video - but he was very much the topic of conversation at the day-long event, which features black activists, academics and elected officials.
As president, Obama has rarely singled out black issues in the way he did in his address, and he spoke directly of such topics only rarely on the campaign trail, giving an address on race only amidst a controversy about his former pastor. As a candidate he talked about the need address obesity in the black community as well as fatherhood.
But his comments Saturday stuck closely to the economy, and how his stimulus package, budget and SCHIP children's health bill would help. But he, like other speakers, stressed the need for others beside the government to step up.
Obama said the forum represents “an incredible opportunity to highlight not only the challenges facing the African American community—but also the ways in which ordinary men and women are working to meet them.”
“You have tapped into a yearning in the community to address our toughest problems instead of leaving them for another day, or year, or generation.”
“We need everyone to take responsibility for the future of our families, our communities, and our country,” he said. “So I thank you for being part of a noble effort at this defining moment," Obama said.
His comments, filmed in the White House were met with applause.
Two large photos of Obama framed the stage—his face was made up of a montage of photos of black elected officials and is the cover of Accountable, the book by event host, Tavis Smiley.
[NOTE: I IGNORED the NEXT STATEMENT by "TRAVESTY - Smile -n- STAB!!" :>)]
Until recently, the idea that the world’s most powerful nations might come together to tackle global warming seemed an environmentalist’s pipe dream.
The Kyoto Protocol, signed in 1997, was widely viewed as badly flawed. Many countries that signed the accord lagged far behind their targets in curbing carbon dioxide emissions. The United States refused even to ratify it. And the treaty gave a pass to major emitters in the developing world like China and India.
But within weeks of taking office, President Obama has radically shifted the global equation, placing the United States at the forefront of the international climate effort and raising hopes that an effective international accord might be possible. Mr. Obama’s chief climate negotiator, Todd Stern, said last week that the United States would be involved in the negotiation of a new treaty — to be signed in Copenhagen in December — “in a robust way.”
That treaty, officials and climate experts involved in the negotiations say, will significantly differ from the agreement of a decade ago, reaching beyond reducing greenhouse gas emissions and including financial mechanisms and making good on longstanding promises to provide money and technical assistance to help developing countries cope with climate change.

Rikyrah,
I really appreciate the Black History Month daily thread. Now that it's Women's History Month, will you be doing posts on the contributions of black women in the advancement of women. I personally believe that women rights and civil rights are not mutually exclusive. Too many times the media portray the women's movement as white phenomenon . It isn't.
rikyrah
Hmmm...Hadn't thought of it. Ok, I'll take up the challenge.
Good - because I was a bit disappointed there weren't more women highlighted over the past few weeks. I was thinking maybe we could have both genders with their 'contributions' and stories.
An ever-expanding list of resources for learning about famous African American women and other women of Black History. You'll find women who are famous and women who should be better-known, from early America and slavery to the 21st century, including the Harlem Renaissance and the civil rights movement. See also:

Thanks for this. I have one friend who teaches middle school and and two who teach high school. I'll pass this along. They usually love whatever I bring to them. The middle school teacher - when I was in Ohio - I bought children's books for her from a bookstore (near Shaker Square) that catered primarily to POC.
you know that is a great idea, I will try to use our People in the News section in the paper this month focusing exclusively on women. If anyone know of anyone I can profile in 350-400 words with a color headshot, please reply here or send me to editor@northdallasgazette.com. Authors are welcome.

There was a late request about Geithner yesterday so here is an update from Boomberg: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarch... rikyrah In all cabinet appointments there is always someone whom becomes the de jour matyr. the more I read about Geithner it is pretty clear he wasn't going to be a matyr period. He is covering for these financial institutions in ways I do not even recognize though I know the goal, I think because it keeps moving. The goal is not to liquidate the failing financial institutions to protect the wealthy any longer but to protect the idea of contracts, which achieves the same thing.
whiterosebuddy
"For months, Geithner and other Treasury officials shuttled across Asia, helping to contain the panic. During one long absence from home, Geithner told acquaintances that his two children, Elise and Benjamin, had looked up his picture on the Treasury Department Web site to remind them of what he looked like. "
awwww, that is so hard on families.
I think though that this excerpt underscores why there is so much opposition right now to Geithner:
“We need a fundamental redesign,” Geithner told lawmakers in January. “We will seek to improve the regulatory structure in a way that provides the safeguards we need ,,,,,“Perhaps most important from the perspective of financial stability was the failure of risk management,” Geithner testified in January. “Ensuring that U.S. banks maintain adequate capital reserves is a critical component of a well- functioning banking system.”
The financial services forum, which comprises the chief executive officers of 17 big commercial banks, securities and mutual fund firms and insurers, is already lobbying to fend off mandated risk management procedures and other regulations. .”
