Burris says he's working hard to represent Ill.

A somber U.S. Sen. Roland Burris told hundreds of supporters at a black church in Chicago on Sunday that he's been working hard to represent them in Washington, D.C.

In a brief speech before a cheering crowd at New Covenant Baptist Church, Burris didn't mention the increasing calls for his resignation from officials in Washington and Illinois _ including from fellow Democrats.

Instead, Burris pointed to his accomplishments, including voting for President Barack Obama's economic stimulus bill. He said he's given three speeches on the Senate floor, and he proposed a bill to recognize the slaves who helped build the Capitol.

"I will never let you down," Burris said. "I will serve you with honesty and integrity. That's all I know."

Before addressing the congregation Sunday, Burris met with the Rev. Stephen Thurston, pastor of New Covenant, and other African-American ministers.

The ministers later spoke with reporters and said the criticism of Burris should stop.

"We believe he is the right man in the right place, and he is doing an exceptional job," Thurston said.

The calls for Burris to resign have taken a disrespectful, ugly turn, with people attacking the senator's family and seeking to "destroy his public life," Thurston said.

The pastors warned that public officials who have said Burris should step down shouldn't expect their support in the next election.

"We are not playing _ this seat is too important," the Rev. Janette Wilson said. "We are not going to let you force our senator to resign."

Appearing with the ministers, U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush said that people calling for Burris' ouster have "a horse in the race" to replace him as senator. And he questioned Quinn's priorities in repeatedly calling for Burris to resign, saying the governor should concentrate on getting the state in order.

And Rush said Burris did not lie about the circumstances surrounding his appointment.

i dont know if i entirely agree with that. hes saying barack is successful if blacks are successful. i think thats too much dependent independent. it needs to be more independent. if blacks and hispanics do better under him than any other administration than barack is successful. that means that we have to take part in our own success and failures

Can the underemployed, vulnerable and weak actually take part in theire successes or will it take one in power to bring them along?

Obama may use 50-vote tactic on energy, healthcare

President Obama’s budget director said the White House would consider using a Senate procedural tactic so that only 50 votes would be rquired to pass major healthcare and energy reforms.

Peter Orszag, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, said the administration would prefer not to use the budget reconciliation process to push through its package.

My sons have spoken about this dissing of cultural heirtage. One of the things they noted was that dissing folks in a multicultural setting whereeverone can be subject to a disparging comment is way different from a vastly homogeneous populaition.

In order words if you on the playground with Jews, germans, indians, egyptians, negros and white folks...then ALL the kids have something to say NEGATIVE about each one of the groups so no ONE group feels singled out.

So, what happens is that EVERYone is made to feel less than or bad in some way which makes EVERYONE feel that they are NOT top dog but have to EARN it on INDIVIDUAL merit. Cultural and heirtage give you no free pass, IOW's there is no entitlement based on being of a specific race or culture..i.e. white.

But if you on the playground and you the ONLY jew, negro or indian..THEN it does feel like racism, prejudice or HATE.

It is all about the surroundings, and when the kids have a mulitcultural environment..even when they are prone to try and make fun of one group over another their chains get jerked and they realize, ain't nobody TOP dog on the basis of race of culture.

My sons gained this perspective by moving from the very mulitcultural East coast to the homogenous midwest of Minnesota. It was a significant cultural shock for them despite them STILL being in the minority..it was a DIFFERENT minority, as now they were a minority with a HOMOGENOUS majority.

And THAT is what Eastwood is speaking about when he talks about telling racist jokes, he was in the homogenous MAJORITY so he didn't feel singled out, otherwise he wouldn't think culurally biased or racist jokes..were fine.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but it this really a big deal, or just an issue for some of the Deaniacs.

I believe Dean should have been offered something. Actually, he's a partisan, and I have no problem with partisans, and I wish that he'd be a partisan at the FDA. Having a believer at the FDA again and not a corporate stooge would go a long way to re-establishing faith in this organization once again.
