Rather we need to think about the ethical, moral and everyday impacts advances in science invariably have on us as POC. I would argue that we need to be very skeptical about all the hoopla about what advances we can expect with stem cell research. We already have many cell lines. Scientist are arguing that we need more to mimic more tissues. By definition many of the immortal cell lines have problems arising out of the fact that they are immortal( never die) in the first place--and arent a very good milieu to mimic the human body. Will more cell lines really solve the problem?

All I can say is check the source of all the people saying we really need stem cells NOW. How much bank are they prepared to make off this new access to stem cells? How many papers will they write? I think what you hit upon Jill is that alot of this is about money.

Here's just one example of how are bodies have been used by science. Ethics and morality are important too.

Stem cell research could be good but it also can be bad. Stem cells hold the potential to open up new cell lines that may be used to treat many diseases. (Its a big IF though since we have been talking about finding the cure for cancer for 30 plus years. Instead of a cure there is this whole industry around marketing to raise money for a cure.) At the same time stem cells by their nature are easily harvested from embryos. I am fully prolife and I have a problem with creating life at the expense of life. I would be 100% for stem cell research if we could (legally) limit the way they are created to embryo safe techniques, harvesting from bone marrow and peripheral blood etc. Otherwise we are opening up a slippery slope where human life is even more commoditized ( made up word?) then it already is.

As black folk who have had our bodies bought and sold as well having been prey to the eugenics movement I think we need to think really seriously about these new technologies. How many times have we heard about wonderful new technologies that are made with our blood sweat and tears or that dont live up to their promise or end up only being available to the rich and powerful?

While no one can argue that stem cell research can enrich the economy thats not all you have to think. I struck up a conversation on yesterday with a "potential solar panel contractor" about the creation of stimulus jobs coming down. The first thing out of his mouth was "We'll bring people onto the crews we already have and train them on the job" to install solar panels. Dallas is a good place for this because there are a lot of wealthy people who will buy into this new technology. So, I asked this guy what other jobs would be created and he said there would also be sales jobs. Now, just imagine this: a laid off MBA goes into the interview confident of his skills to sale this new technology, solar panels annnnnnnnnd he is offered the company janitor job. to satisfy the government hiring I am just saying there have to be some EEOC guidelines with hiring affirmative action goals attached to these jobs --are we are going to be where we have always been...shyt out of luck.

Its too bad that I look at this glass as half empty.
