I bet you $1.00 that a consumer walked into the store, replaced that center pic with a monkey to start some drama. I do not believe anyone in the store did this. I just don't. My first instinct at looking at the pic was that this was deliberate to draw attention but it had nothing to do with Barnes and Noble nor did it have anything to do with racism.

Opinion: Alan Keyes Does Harm to GOP’s Outreach to Blacks

While many Blacks often disagree with the GOP on matters of public policy, particularly its far-right wing, we know that many Black Republicans fervently believe in the party’s fundamental economic and social message.
Alan Keyes however, defies rational behavior in his exuberance to demean anyone and anything Black that does not conform to his warped sense of American identity. Where Some may feel Justice Clarence Thomas is misguided in his construction of the Constitution and application of justice, Keyes is simply irrational and behaves as if there are some underlying psychological issues affecting his judgment. Memo to Mr. Keyes: You can be Black, Republican and sane.

If you don’t know, Keyes is the ultra Black conservative who pushes Pat Buchanan to the left. Keyes fancies himself a super-patriot, defender of all things American and denouncer of all things Black. His primary occupation seems to be running for public offices for which he has no reasonable chance of winning, whether it’s the Senate in Illinois or for President of the United States. His campaigns have been a single continuous rant against the liberal establishment. Keyes regularly displays delusional outbursts that provoke as much pity as it does anger from his detractors. In one of its low moments, MSNBC wasted air time giving Keyes a program that mirrored his warped perspective, while removing Phil Donahue around the same time.

Now it seems Keyes has taken to insulting President Obama, claiming he does not recognize Mr. Obama’s election as legitimate and refusing to acknowledge him as the nation’s leader. Keyes further claimed that the United States will “cease to exist” if Obama is not removed from office. Like so many other ignorant Obama critics on the far-right fringe, Keyes questions the President’s birth certificate and U.S. citizenship. It is a tired ploy that reveals the depths of racism and the extent of Keyes’ self-hatred. Of all the cards to play, Keyes, who possesses a doctorate, plays the one that appeal to the lowest common denominator of the Republican’s conservative base.

Alan Keyes is an embarrassment to himself and the Republican Party. His ramblings only serve to further distance Blacks from the GOP. Black Republicans, in particular, should be tired of Keyes’ grandstanding and camera mugging. For the casual observer, Keyes becomes the face of Black Republicanism against the silence of more measured, reasonable and rational Black voices in the party. The GOP’s leadership should make every effort to exile Keyes. While new party chair Michael Steele, the first Black to lead the Republican National Committee, claims he is constructing a “big tent” he need not preside over a circus act. The quicker Steele makes it known to Keyes that his tirades have no place in the party, the sooner Blacks will take seriously the new chairman’s claim that he is serious about making its membership more inclusive.

By appearances, Mr. Keyes is clearly angry. Perhaps it stems from his repeated failure to get elected to office. For someone who claims to speak for the masses of conservative Americans, he doesn’t seem to notice that voters do not deem him worthy of election. His repeated campaigns have made him a caricature, a cartoonish figure who probably amuses White conservatives and embarrasses those that know better. This is the same man who disowned his own daughter because she is a lesbian. Even Darth Cheney did not do that.

While Whites who espouse patently racist views are quickly denounced, Blacks tend to take a pass when other Blacks sow the seeds of hate against us. Alan Keyes is a demagogue, a fanatic, and his recent remarks warrant condemnation. His act has grown tired over the years and his latest rant proves just how disturbed he has become.

Conservatives such as yourself miss the nuances in individual strife and asking the government to reduce the collective strifes of everyone else going through the same thing. Nobody who is alive and who is reasonable WANTS to lean on the government–what they want government to do is make itself useful in making society better.

Let us not forget that the ever-praised 'free market of ideas' of those in charge (as these free markets are NEVER equally applied by all) once declared it okay for Blacks to be owned as property, to Blacks being allowed only to sharecrop, to Blacks having to live under the racist rule of Jim Crow legislation and separate-but-unequal.

The federal funds will not be permanent, but that is a poor excuse for withholding extended benefits such as the ones provided by the stimulus. States have the power of adjusting their own unemployment programs through sunset provisions that expire at the same time the federal money does.

It kills me every time someone does something blatantly racist and says they are going to rehab! Do they sit all day and watch a slideshow of people of color intermixed with puppies, ice cream and rainbows until they are “cured”? Sometimes I just shake my head.

if you do you have to point out how ignorant it is. Wall Street as measured by the stock market always goes up and down. Until the last eight years income always went up w/ the market's move. for the first time we had the market up and income down.
it also knows that stock prices are also a reflection of whether or not the companies are acturally making money. It is fairly obvious that most companies aren't.

Forgive the tardiness of the comment. Tried to post earlier, but was having issues. To put Dillion, SC in perspective remember this is tobacco country. Not to say that good students cannot come from these schools. For example, Ben Bernanke finished that same school, albeit fifty years ago, prior to integration. Blacks that valued education sent their kids to Florence, Horry County, Columbia or across the border to North Carolina.

With no tax base to pull from, schools like this pay the ultimate price. What helps Virginia schools is the consolidated school districts based on City or County boundaries. In SC you may have upwards to 5 districts or more in one county, each with differing levels of funding based on whos and whom they serve.
