OTTAWA — Canadians greeted a presidential visit from George W. Bush with 8,000 protesters. For President Barack Obama? They're selling T-shirts, and the conservative government is happy to see him.
"They want to bask in the same glory," said Nelson Wiseman, an associate professor at the University of Toronto. "Nobody would have gone to Ottawa to try to get a glimpse of Bush except to demonstrate against him."
Obama goes to Canada on Thursday for his first foreign visit as president. It will be short, about six hours long. He is not staying for dinner. But he will meet with Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper for a working lunch and a joint news conference. He will also meet briefly with Liberal opposition leader Michael Ignatieff at the airport before he leaves.
"If he's here five hours or five minutes he's welcome on Canadian territory," Ignatieff said. "We hope this is the first of many visits."
Harper will be want to be seen as close to Obama, unlike with Bush, said David Biette, director of the Canada Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars in Washington.
"Most Canadians found George W. Bush radioactive," Biette said. "Canadians love Obama, so Harper has a much freer range to make motions toward the United States."
Ronald Reagan, Bush's father, and Bill Clinton made Canada their first stop, but Bush went to Mexico. Canadians felt snubbed.
When Bush visited in 2004, about 8,000 Canadians protested largely because of America's actions in Iraq.
This time, "we anticipate that the crowds will be very enthusiastic," Ottawa Police Supt. Charles Bordeleau said.
Jessica Franklanv, an employee of Bang-on T-shirts, said they've sold hundreds of Obama T-shirts.
"People are really excited that he's coming up here so soon after the election," Franklanv said. "I think everybody would like the chance to see him."

President Obama will have plenty of face time with the nation’s governors while they’re in town over the weekend for their annual meeting.
Obama relied heavily on governors to help drum up support for his economic stimulus package. Perhaps his most notable alliance was forged with the Republican governor of Florida, Charlie Crist.
Crist will be among the governors Obama is hosting at the White House for dinner Sunday night, an aide to Crist said. He'll return to the White House to meet with the President on Monday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
HA! This is great! How will the rethugs switch up the conversation now? Probably burn a cross in front of the NAACP headquarters and swear its for spring revival and not about scaring up the BLA-ACKS!

rikyrah: Sooooo, I took a "Field Trip" to ALASKA [Mudflats] to see how they were dealin' with "The Gov.'s" TAXES:
For those who have been sitting, drumming their fingers on the desk, and staring at the clock since September, waiting for Sarah Palin’s “per diem gate” to swing wide open, your wait is over.
We all remember how Governor Palin collected “per diem” payments, which are designed to compensate legislators and state employees for meals and lodging when they are working far from home. The difference between the per diem money Palin collected, and the per diem money that legislators collect, is that they collect it when they are in Juneau. Palincollects it while living in her own home in Wasilla, and for eating moose chili in her own kitchen. As a matter of fact, she charged the state for 312 nights in Wasilla in her first 19 months in office. (Gets out calculator….tap tap tap…that’s….54% of the time) Last time I checked, the official duty station for the governor is the capital, which is actually Juneau, not Wasilla.
The governor’s office wouldn’t say this week how much she owes in back taxes for meal money, or whether she intends to continue to receive the per diem allowance. As of December, she was still charging the state for meals and incidentals.
“The amount of taxes owed is a private matter,” Sharon Leighow, Palin’s spokeswoman, said in an e-mail. “If the governor collects future per diem, those documents would be a matter of public record.”
Back in September, the Washington Post reported that Palin had charged the residents of Alaska $17,000 for ”meals and incidentals”, and paid no taxes on it. That’s more than a full-time minimum wage worker in the state of Alaska makes in a year. Nice income, if it actually worked that way.
But, alas, the IRS doesn’t see it quite the same way the governor does. They think that if you take the money, you’d better pay taxes on it, and Palin didn’t. Oops. So that means a certain Republican Golden Girl, a certain future hope for the GOP, a certain potential candidate in 2012, owes the IRS (scary organ chord) back taxes.
THERE IS MORE. :>) :>)

Hey Sepia, I believe you were asking about the importance of China/japan being our bankers when I made the comment about President Obama removing all the most contentious pieces of foreign policy out from under HRC's purview. Here is some commentary on the trip:
"THE economic news out of Japan is catastrophic. Our biggest export market saw its gross domestic product decline at an annual rate of more than 12 per cent in the December quarter.
But the good news is that new US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has just visited Japan and signalled the US's deep commitment to Asia, and to the Pacific alliance system, of which Japan is the key.
Apart from the fact that she is not coming to Australia, Clinton's visit to Asia is everything Canberra could possibly want. There was a fear in Asia that Barack Obama - the "first post-Cold War president", in Kim Beazley's telling phrase - would not understand the importance of the US's Asian alliances and would be focused on the Middle East and Europe at Asia's expense.
Clinton's trip, and her speech to the Asia Society, are designed to answer that concern. She declared: "The US is committed to maintaining our historic security alliances in Asia and building on those relationships to counter the complex global threats we face."
Is Hillary really on a trade mission, that's really what it is? After the first AA POTUS made her Secretary of State he appointed envoys to Iraq/Iran and Afghanistan. So in 4 years if Billary decides to run for President again, what can she say she was really responsible for. Not resolving Iraq/Iran nor Afghanistan. She created this trip after Obama circled her wagon and once again removed solving of the coveted wars from her greedy grasp. So. now she created herself a trade missio which is what Kirk is supposed to do. BUT, she is Secretary of State. Obama is just so smart. "Cause Billary are WANNABEES they wasn't going to do what Judd did when he told Obama to keep the leftovers.
But you just said that didn't you?
whiterosebuddy
Yep. Isn't O-man brilliant.
Even the head of the UN reports directly to Obama. He made certain that HRC will not have anything to run on, when it comes to FP creds, IF she should decide to run against him in 2012.
I also thought by making Rice a cabinet member, if something should happen and HRC shoudl resign, Rice is already been through the nomination process and he could simply slide her right into the SOS slot, without additional nomination hearings.
Just lovin it:
"the Secretary of State's shrinking role in the Obama administration,.....
For starters, consider the naming of big guns George Mitchell and Richard Holbrooke to play the leading roles in Arab-Israeli negotiations and Afghanistan-Pakistan, respectively. Those hires potentially sideline Clinton in major hot spots.
Vice President Joe Biden's trip to Afghanistan and other signs suggest that he is staking a powerful claim on foreign policy, his longtime turf while in the Senate.
What's worse for Clinton is that so many on Obama's foreign policy team, such as Holbrooke, won rights for direct access to the President, instead of having to go through her. United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice made sure the post was bumped up to Cabinet level, taking her out of Clinton's chain of command."
"Of what is she secretary of State? If you take the Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan [and the UN] out of the equation, what is left?"
hehehehe BHO ...is DOIN it!!

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius arrives in Washington this weekend sitting atop Obama's list for Health and Human Services secretary. . .
. . .and as the candidate that at least two leading health advocacy groups tell Politico they expect Obama to pick.
A White House official said Wednesday that no decision has been made but that Sebelius is a leading candidate for the job left vacant when Tom Daschle withdrew due to tax problems.
Sebelius arrives in Washington this weekend to attend the National Governor's Association winter meeting. She has been coy about her prospects, saying only that she remains focused on economic issues in Kansas.
The two-term governor is scheduled to be in Washington from Saturday through Tuesday - one day after the conference ends.
Two groups involved in the health care reform effort say all signs right now point to Sebelius - who as a Democrat running a Republican state has experience with the bruising partisan battles sure to accompany Obama's effort to overhaul the U.S. healthcare system.
And a White House source said earlier talk of Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen for the job has cooled. Sebelius and Bredesen were long thought to be the only two serious contenders after the departure of Daschle, who was in line for the job so long before Obama picked him in December that Obama's team never seriously considered anyone else.
The last time Sebelius was in Washington, in early February, she met privately with Valerie Jarrett, an Obama senior adviser. They sat down only days after Daschle withdrew.
Sebelius and Obama should cross paths Sunday when the President and first lady host a dinner for the governors, and again Monday for a scheduled White House meeting with the governors.
Sebelius told reporters earlier this week that she’s not expecting an announcement in Washington.
“Not that I know of in any way shape or form, I intend to go as the Governor of Kansas,” Sebelius said Tuesday when asked if she anticipated changing positions.
What's her name from Kansas, Nebraska, out there in the middle of the country where it's fucking flat?
rikyrah
She's the Governor of Kansas

President Obama gave his mortgage plan today. It is pretty good. The comprehensive definitions in the plan will give people multiple options. The hard part is people have to step up to the plate. The weakness are two. People have to have FNM or FRE mortgages or conforming mortgages still held by the bank which will prevent people whom don't have these from receiving help. This will hurt in areas where jumbo mortgages were used because of the cost of homes. The other requires the bankruptcy laws to be changed to allow primary homes to have their mortgages reduced. The politics of this change are going to be ridiculous. Bondholders are paid first in bankruptcy's and they will not want this set as a precendent(sic?). More to follow.
whiterosebuddy
How can any one with a conforming loan have a loan still held by the bank. Didn't they sell them off in bits and pieces all bundled into 'securitized deriviatives" that no one knows how much risk any longer?
Jumbo folks always get hurt. If you ask me they need to redefine jumbo. I'm not bragging but most everyone I know has a jumbo mortgage. Can you buy a decent home on the EastCoast without it being a jumbo mortgage?
However, in the scheme of things I suppose there are millions more conforming vs. non-conforming loans so it will be good overall for the economy for the majority of the middle class.
Don't you think just the threat of the bank going to bankruptcy court and knowing a judge can decide gives leverage to the homeowner in getting the bank to re do the loan terms.
Personally, I think they need to bring back cram down quick fast and in a hurry. I do not give a sweet phuck about these bankers. It is time that they get it in the rear with no vaseline after how they have screwed up the entire financial system with their avarice.
allamr18
they were talking about jumbo loans on cnbc, most of the people on there said that this is a great first step and that the administration was working on other phases of the mortgage issue which included jumbo loans. and i think i heard david gergen yesterday talking about cram downs, he was saying that republicans would be against it and it would turn into another partisan fight
whiterosebuddy
Good. It is time to bust the bank lobbyists. They have destroyed the system and now it is time for them to pay up. Obama has the political capital to get it done. Americans are furious and mad as hell that we are bailing out bankers and not the taxpayers!!
Everything has a season...it is time to take on the banking industry and their usurious (sp?) interest rates on those credit cards, them not extending credit and that universal default crap where if you miss paying your phone bill they can raise your interest rate, even if you have never missed a single payment on the credit card.
I want the banking industry to go down HARD!!! Credit card phuckers too!!
All those late fees, when they do not put the bills in the mail timely and use bulk mail without postmarks, and then have you sending it to the wrong PO box and shyt, then they take you over the limit with their fees and charge you even more fees and interest.
O and I just read the other day that the credit rating companies Experian etc are no longer going to provide consumers with their credit ratings only the banks and creditors will get them so you will not even know what infor was used in the decision process.
I want their asses to be shot and strung up and their eyeballs poked out as they writhe in agony.
HATE them!!
pjamma
Instead of a jumbo mortgage I got two mortgages, one for the max conforming amount and then another to make up the difference. Because I put money down I got great rates on both so it works out much better then a Jumbo. But with the increased limits in the high cost areas I will probably do better with a combined refinanced.
whiterosebuddy
I am unfamiliar with 2 mortgages on one property at the POS.
pjamma
It's pretty popular where I live (in CA). There is a limit to the second mortgage amount but it works out well (or worked out well before the laws changed) if your total mortgaged amount was over $417,000 but less then $650,000. With the new changes to the jumbo rules, one mortgage works out as well or better for people.
whiterosebuddy
hmmmm, food for thought

ta nehisi coates picks up on some good words about pbo from a new yorker article:
"Fifty years ago, the civil-rights movement understood that nonviolence can be an effective weapon even if--or especially if--the other side refuses to follow suit. Obama has a similarly tough-minded understanding of the political uses of bipartisanship, which, even if it fails as a tactic for compromise, can succeed as a tonal strategy: once the other side makes itself appear intransigently, destructively partisan, the game is half won. Obama is learning to throw the ball harder. But it's not Rovian hardball he's playing. More like Gandhian hardball."
This is the piece that was discussed on Morning Joke, when Joke said he was about to "vomit in his mouth."
Miranda
Well if killing a young woman and leaving her dead body in his office didn't sicken him I highly doubt he should have feared vomiting over a lil positive commentary on the President.
http://www.newsweek.com/id/184815 Pointing out how often pundits' predictions are not only wrong but egregiously wrong—a 36,000 Dow! euphoric Iraqis welcoming American soldiers with flowers!—is like shooting fish in a barrel, except in this case the fish refuse to die. No matter how often they miss the mark, pundits just won't shut up, and I'll lay even odds that the pundits (and pollsters) who predicted a big defeat for Tzipi Livni in the Israeli elections last week didn't slink away in shame after her party outpolled all others. The fact that being chronically, 180-degrees wrong does not disqualify pundits is in large part the media's fault:

And Big ups for 1600 Pennsy Ave starting off with the quote from AG Eric Holder. Roland Martin quotes it last in his response to the cartoon.
Here is an excerpt: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I guess it's fitting the cartoon ran today because the best statement to sum up the issue can be taken from a Black History month speech given today by our first black attorney general, Eric Holder.
"Even as we fight a war against terrorism, deal with the reality of electing an African American as our President for the first time and deal with the other significant issues of the day, the need to confront our racial past, and our racial present, and to understand the history of African people in this country, endures," he said.
"One cannot truly understand America without understanding the historical experience of black people in this nation. Simply put, to get to the heart of this country one must examine its racial soul."
Ya know, in the past when we had to deal with events such as in the New York Post today, we had nothing to soothe the hurt that it caused. Now we do. Balance has come to America. The Obama family always calms the spirit. Thanks be to God.
