Obama needs to stop 'effin' around with Republicans that don't want to work with him and work to get 60+ Dems in 2010 for the senate. These republicans have not worked with good faith, across the board, F'em
Saw this at 538 website and thought I would pass it on in case some of you DC people are interested. Sounds like a great opportunity. As a reminder this is the website that really did a fantastic job in calling the numbers on Obama winning.
"FiveThirtyEight DC Internship
Do you live in the Washington, DC area, have very strong organizational skills, a love of politics, and are interested in working really hard for free starting soon? If the answer is yes, we might have an internship for you. This is for the reporting side and less the number-crunching side. Email your résumé, and a letter explaining your interest to: intern538dc@gmail.com.
The deadline is February 17 at midnight.
In response to several FAQs, we're looking at about a three-month gig, during which time you'll be in an integral part of the reporting operation, and the experience you gain will be invaluable. It's probably best for a college student or recent grad or someone (unemployed ex-organizer?) expecting a hire in DC in June or later."
Out of Work and Challenged on Benefits, Too In Record Numbers, Employers Move to Block Unemployment Payouts
By Peter Whoriskey Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, February 12, 2009; Page A01
It's hard enough to lose a job. But for a growing proportion of U.S. workers, the troubles really set in when they apply for unemployment benefits.
More than a quarter of people applying for such claims have their rights to the benefit challenged as employers increasingly act to block payouts to former workers.
The proportion of claims disputed by former employers and state agencies has reached record levels in recent years, according to the Labor Department numbers tallied by the Urban Institute.
Under state and federal laws, employees who are fired for misbehavior or quit voluntarily are ineligible for unemployment compensation. When jobless claims are blocked, employers save money because their unemployment insurance rates are based on the amount of the benefits their workers collect.
As unemployment rolls swell in the recession, many workers seem surprised to find their benefits challenged, their former bosses providing testimony against them. On one recent morning in what amounts to one of Maryland's unemployment courts, employees and employers squared off at conference tables to rehash reports of bad customer service, anger management and absenteeism.
"I couldn't believe it," said Kenneth M. Brown, who lost his job as a hotel electrician in October.
He began collecting benefits of $380 a week but then discovered that his former employer, the owners of the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, were appealing to block his unemployment benefits. The hotel alleged that he had been fired for being deceptive with a supervisor.
What, I live in the area and I haven't heard that.
Micheline
lamh32,
Could you please go to the TNR an school Teplukin and Cal180 about the stimulus. When it comes to the stimulus, both men are talking out of their asses.
More just putting it out there. Saw it in the paper yesterday and thought I'd share.
I could complain. That 3.2 million for "community action agencies" is questionable. And I'm not exactly sure how the state would spend money to help the unemployed find jobs, but that's a question for my delegate and state senator.
djchefron
Maybe they can use it for mass transit so for the people who live in the city can have a way to get to the jobs in the suburbs.
There's already $136 million for mass transit (which isn't bad, 'cause Hampton Roads needs a subway or light rail of some sort).
djchefron
The more the better or are you okay with transferring our wealth to Saudi Arabia who in turn fund the madrases that turn out the foot soldiers for bin laden?
But HOW does this help the economy? What does this-any of it-stimulate?
Micheline
It stimulates the economy in several ways. First it creates construction jobs be it in the field or the administrative office ( i.e., project managers , bookkeepers, etc.). Second, the purchase of supplies to build these things thus benefiting the manufacturer that make these supplies (and may as a result lead to that factory hiring people); Third when people are working sometimes they may go to restaurants for lunch thereby helping the restaurants (if demand continues apace they may have to hire staff to cook and wait tables). Another effect is an increase in ordering food supplies to meet demand). In the long term this may increase tourism as well as making the area an even more desirable place to live. In addition, mass transit could stave off the greenhouse effect.
And here lies the problem with this whole "stimulus".
You used "may" four times. Meaning it might...but it might not as well.
Why aren't we addressing those things that will have an IMMEDIATE (meaning six months or so) effect?
Admiral_Komack
Gee, what may the tax cuts do?
Micheline
Six months? No. It will be measured in years. Thankfully the American people know that this won't happen immediately. Lets not forget that the stimulus is also a stabilizer. Preventing jobs from getting lost. The problem right we now is that we are in a downward spiral. So we not only must arrest this from getting worse , we must also improve the situation.
But what I was describing to you in my previous comment is the multiplier effect. Keynes had the insight that if you give people jobs and decent wages then the economy will do well because people will buy. Henry Ford came to that conclusion when he decided to pay his workers good wages so they can purchase his cars. One of the reasons that we are in the rut that we are in is that in the past 30 years or so wages have stagnated. Hence some people relying on credit cards and payday loans to get by. (Personally I think that is stupid but that some people for you)
Okay, so then why the gloom, doom, and talk of catastrophe?
Know what I want? If this bill is a bill the fund miscellaneous projects, fine; call it that. If it's supposed to an economy that's in such dire straits that kicking out close to a trillion dollars (once the interest is added) is immediately necessary, that's fine...but be able to tell me how it's gonna work.
Micheline
This will work in conjunction with reforming the banking system and as well as reforming the healthcare system. D, the situation is dire. Thank god we have social security, food stamps and unemployment benefits that keeping a lot of people afloat. If it weren't for the social safety net we would be in much worse shape.
...but there's no way you can draw a line between fixing the economy and doing ANYTHING to health care that doesn't lower costs, which really isn't the government's job in the first place.
That's a pet project.
Micheline
No it is not a pet project the situation that we are in is because the problems we are experiencing is systemic.
So how does tinkering with healthcare-specifically:
-$21 billion to subsidize insurance premiums for the unemployed, -$19 billion to modernize health information technology systems, and -$10 billion for health research (okay, not that) and new federal health facilities
...help to stimulate the economy? What's that going to fix? The unemployed will still be so, we're going to spend a bunch of money on computer systems (at its most basic), and build new "federal health facilities" for...what, exactly?
And aside from the topic of healthcare, there's %4.6 billion for the Army Corps of Engineers. You and I both know what THAT'S for, and that's fine. But (and this will get me in trouble) rebuilding the levees around NO is not going to help the national economic picture. Sorry, but it's not.
Again, the problem with this whole bill: there may be some things in here that will truly boost the economy, but there's some in here that are just fulfillments of Democratic campaign promises. Y'all won, so I can't knock you too much on that...but let's call them what they are.
And I'm STILL waiting on the bill to show up online on recovery.gov. Transparency, anyone? Anyone?
Micheline
You must take into account that Obama is looking t the short term and the long term. Electronic has bi-partisan support . We can save billions of dollars in developing the system. This will make our healthcare system more efficient. Funding healthcare for the unemployed is more about stabilizing . You save more money bu funding this rather than states paying for emergency care.
djchefron
The less money you spend on gas the more you have to spend on quality of life products. If you own a restaurant you go out to eat more which means the owner will hire more workers who will pay more taxes and they in turn will spend for their quality of life products and those owners of business will have more money to pump in the economy well you get the point. To me its the circle of life.If I am happy then you will be happy.
Why not just cut the payroll taxes that the restaurant owner (and the employees) pay?
Shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Accomplishes the same goal, and in a shorter period.
(That's about the only tax cut I'll argue for, cause it makes sense. Everything else I'm still up in the air about)
djchefron
I am for cutting payroll taxes for everyone making under $45,000 a year and making everyone regardless of income paying into FICA. If you did that then I am for a flat income tax and a VAT on products.
Far as something to reduce foreign oil....can I sell you a gas tax that keeps the price around $3-4 a gallon?
djchefron
Yes.Then we would get serious about making our nation more fuel efficient.I live in a rural area and when gas was high my family changed our habits. So instead of getting in the car just to go to the store we walked. We still do it now.Good for the body and soul and better yet good for the pocketbook.
GOOD for HIM!!! Put up a reminder and I'll blog it and keep an eye on those happenings.

Tell Me What She Wore By Jeanne McManus Thursday, February 12, 2009; Page A17 WaPo
How to say this: I enjoy reading about Michelle Obama's clothes. I like to know what she's wearing, appreciate details about her shoes and gloves, wonder where she got her necklace. When she shows up at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, I'm not distracted from her message by being simultaneously informed that she is in a slate-gray suit.
Is it right about here that other women start throwing shoes at me? In the stunning image of Michelle Obama, a woman of substance and of style (in this case, attention-getting, Vogue-worthy style), it is apparent that in Washington we don't always do a good job of acknowledging those two sides of the same woman -- or of allowing them to coexist. Hawk-eyed consumers of mainstream media are ready to pounce anytime a reporter covering Mrs. Obama goes off message and writes about her clothes.
History is partly to blame for this kind of self-consciousness, a willingness to deprive ourselves of one side of the prism of an important woman for the sake of being proper and fair. First ladies have been minimized and marginalized. Hardworking, smart and capable, they were dispatched to provide flossy fodder for the "women's pages." They had causes, programs and platforms that were important to them.
But if they really wanted to make news, they had only to wear a designer dress, a dramatic cape or a bad hat. Substance was undermined by style, good or bad. They were magnifications of the inequities in the lives of so many other women who were, at best, considered only as adjuncts to powerful men.
In my daily reading of the obituary pages, my heart often aches for those accomplished women who came to be wives of ambassadors or military men and who now are eulogized in their 80s mostly for the overseas posts to which they accompanied their dignitary (and possibly difficult) husbands.

There is more.
Early reports are emerging from President Barack Obama’s roundtable Wednesday afternoon with 16 regional newspaper reporters:
Obama said he was “optimistic” that the stimulus would go through and provide “significant relief” to states hard hit by the recession.
The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press report that Obama laid out a blunt challenge to automakers seeking federal financial assistance: “Get me a plan that works.” Freep says Obama warned that if the plans are unrealistic “then we’re going to have to ask them to go back to the drawing board.”
Portland Press Herald reports that Obama had praise for Maine’s two senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins--two of only three Republican senators to back the stimulus bill so far.
And on a lighter note, Obama refused to take sides in the UNC-Duke game Wednesday night. "If I said anything contrary to Duke, I might not be able to find my Blackberry," he said, referring to flak he might take from his personal aide, Reggie Love, a Duke graduate.
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama stood beneath the flag-draped box where Abraham Lincoln was shot inside Ford's Theatre, honoring the "hallowed space" on the eve of the 16th president's 200th birthday.
Hollywood stars and Washington power brokers celebrated the theater's reopening Wednesday night, hearing Obama praise one of his favorite presidents for Lincoln's conviction that a divided nation could be made whole.
"For despite all that divided us _ North and South, black and white _ he had an unyielding belief that we were, at heart, one nation, and one people," Obama said. "And because of Abraham Lincoln, and all who've carried on his work in the generations since, that is what we remain today."
Surrounded by actors and artists, Obama said Lincoln's passion for education and the arts will thrive at the famous theater after its recent $25 million renovation. The theater is reopening after 18 months of installing more comfortable seats, a modern lobby and new dressing rooms.
Those in the audience stood and turned to applaud Obama and first lady Michelle Obama as they made their way down the aisle to the tune of "Hail to the Chief."
Violinist Joshua Bell opened the show with a traditional spiritual on a violin that hadn't been played since the night Lincoln was shot in 1865. Later, a video was played of former presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush reading the Gettysburg Address. The film will be added to the theater's museum.
Before the event, guests ranging from Cabinet members and congressional leaders to movie producers strode down a red carpet in sharply cut tuxedos and colorful gowns. Talk included prime-time television plotlines and the economic stimulus package being hammered out in Congress. Story continues below
SKIP
The theater will reopen to the public Thursday for Lincoln's birthday and then on Monday for President's Day. Regular tours resume on Feb. 17. A revamped museum is slated to open later this spring, and there are plans to build a Lincoln Center for Education and Leadership across the street.
THERE IS MORE.

Annnnnd, I just used a few pieces of my "kodak paper!" :>) :>)
Oh! Her dress. A little "poofy" - - BUT I liked it! Annnnnd, SHE liked it! :>) :>)
PBO campaigned using MSM to promote his themes therefore I have no probelm with the MSM doing what they do..I simply do not have to agree or support the themes of MSM..
Does anybody feel like the media has already decided that Obama is a failure? In spite of getting the stimulus bill, they still want to call him a failure. Give me a break?

Micheline: Co-sign.
BUT - - - They have NOT CHANGED!!
For the past 2 years, we've fought against the MSM because of their bias!!
However, their is some "GOOD" which HAS DEVELOPED:
1. The "BLOGOSPHERE" has RISEN!! :>) :>) Look at the recognition that we're seeing in the "MAIN STREAM!"
President Obama call on a prominent "blogger" at his recent Presser! :>)
2. MAJOR PROPS to "JACK & JILL" for advancing the Black blogosphere annnnnd, therefore, the "Black Voice/POC Voice" in the media!!
IMHO - - we can neva go back to obscurity! "WE HAVE FOUND OUR VOICE!!"
BUT, MORE IMPORTANTLY - - - -"THEY" have HEARD OUR VOICE!!"
***TEARS*** THANK U! :>)
RobM
No. They will be sucking up to him as soon as he has a win or they perceieve the public sees as a win. They gotta sell something to keep their own jobs.
GreenLadyHere
RobM: Yes they will be sucking up to him as soon as he has a win or they perceieve the public sees as a win.
BUT, THEY will have to hear OUR/OTHERS' VOICES because they're LOUD, annnnnnd, we'll neva go away! :>)
Micheline
Damn straight. And we must never let the MSM get away with spreading lies.
This man has done more in the past three week (plus all the time prior to the inauguration) than any of the naysayers or the Bush administration. Because in my view, the Bush administration were as treasonous as they come. Their goal was to destroy this country and they've done a damned good job toward that end.
My grandfather was from Norway and we still have relatives there. The mood - as they see it - has definitely changed towards the U.S. in Scandinavia. We have women on our theology e-list who have commented about the difference of 'mood' and they range from New Zealand to Egypt to Holland. There are those from a couple of blogs where I 'guest' post who travel extensively as well as the ex-pats in different countries across the globe. It's different....
As for being out in the public - on the TV - in different towns or cities. Ya know what? He's the president. The people elected (yeah, I know all about the goddmaned electoral college) him and who better for him to talk to. As Admiral Komack points out below: The more I thought about it, and looking at other blog entries, I thought, "The reason they don't want him on TV is because he is effective."
Also, the talking heads are being bypassed when the President speaks to the people.
Abso-fucking-lutely effective
Again: the Admiral: Barack Hussein Obama IS President; this ain't no Movie of the Week, bitches!
Yeah, bitches!

Justice58
Co-Signing, baby!
Admiral_Komack
Thank you for your post.
I especially enjoyed the feedback from those in other countries concerning the "mood" toward the U.S.
Admiral_Komack
My sister told me a few days ago that some of the talking heads said that President Obama was on TV too much.
I told her I didn't have a problem with it because he's doing his job.
He's pushing his stimulus package.
If he was on "Dancing With The Stars", I would have a problem.
Talk to me when the talking heads complain about the Republicans being on TV too much.
The more I thought about it, and looking at other blog entries, I thought, "The reason they don't want him on TV is because he is effective."
Also, the talking heads are being bypassed when the President speaks to the people.
And the President being on TV underscores the fact that he, Barack Hussein Obama IS President; this ain't no Movie of the Week, bitches!
Justice58
Barack Hussein Obama IS President; this ain't no Movie of the Week, bitches!
Heeheeheeeheee
Now you're talking, baby! Daps!

this ain't no Movie of the Week, bitches!
I just have to say that my new mission is to find a way to work that phrase into everyday conversation.
Honey01
Haha. I might just join you.

"This ain't no movie of the Week bitches! LOL! No it isn't
Talking heads are punks and have been PUNKED by PBO. He sets the tone and narrative for his rounds with the MDS. He uses them and not the other way around. PBO mixes the tv media with TECHNOLOGY, and that is what they cannot comprehend.
Love it!
Miranda
The talking heads cant stand that PBO doesn't need them...at all. He'll use them at his discretion and throw them a bone every now and then.... but really...he doesn't need them.
spirit_55z
Doesn't need them at all,and it drives them insane. Love it! :-)))))))
spirit_55z
The MSM is a FAILURE!!!!
They have to drum up DRAMA,NEGATIVITY, and present PBO as a failure, otherwise, they would not have a job.
Of course nobody wants to hear GOOD, POSTIVE news. So MSM throws in a few specials titled "HEROS." (CNN) just to let us know that we do a few decent things every now and then.
The Internet has slaughtered MSM, and I'll be sooooo happy when it hammers the FINAL NAIL in its coffin.
Yes! The media is owned by corporate America. Corporate America cannot afford for Obama to be a success. Obama threatens the very prinicples that corporate lobbyists and their power and influence use to keep Americans down and not achieve viable healthcare let alone a decent wage for a decent days labor.
The MSM though is being outsmarted by Obama...people who have lost their jobs understand they need to survive. the only individual even talking about lending them a hand up is Obama. Regular Americans know they sink or swim with Obama.
Which is why Obama took his message to the people. He cannot rely on the media.
That interview between Kaine & Steele and the way the interviewer framed the questions said it all!
Plantsmantx
...and a lot of those who still have jobs are afraid that they will lose them, and will need that hand up from the guy who wants to do something. I think (hope) they can see through the posturing of the guys who don't want to do anything.
spirit_55z
Co-sign. And the word of the day now is SOCIALISM. The only folks that spew this nonsensical ideology are the rich.
MSM parrots this jargon, while the ignorant folks who need help will parrot the same shit. Thereby cutting off their heads to spite their face.
It's like they are flying in a 747 and white pilot can no longer fly the plane. So, a Black man steps up and says I'll fly the plane. No one else on the flight can fly the plane.
The other passengers capture the black man, tie him up and gag him, while the plane continues to go out of control and crashes.
They'd rather go down with the plane then see the black man fly.
Miranda
I think the mainstream media is getting more and more desperate to stay relevant, so they beat the drum of hysteria and fabricate more than anything else. Its a shame. Journalism is dead.

the media is doing what they do. drumming of doubt and telling people what they think. this usually happens to democratic presidents. they called clinton a failure in his first months and still attack him. it took 7 consecutive large missteps before the media gave up on bush. they thought hope and change meant the day after the inauguration everything is different. like it wouldnt take longer than 3 weeks to change 200 years of tradition
spirit_55z
"like it wouldnt take longer than 3 weeks to change 200 years of tradition."
That statement bears repetiton.
Micheline
Exactly, Bush got a way with a lot of crap. I also remember the media saying that this idiot was popular when polls said otherwise. But we will see.
allamr18
ill tell you this much bush on his domestic policy will be remembered for three things, katrina those horrible tax cuts and NCLB thats the crux of his domestic accomplishments.

I have no problem with any Black person in any capacity in our nation both in the public or private sector just being normal and not a super negro. I reject the notion that Black Folks have to step up our image now that we have BO in the white house.
I have evolved pass the standard created by white privledge that requires Black folks to always be the best just to prove and validate for whites and others that we are worthy of being. I reject the racist math that I have to be x times better than whites that is not the formula or metrics I live by.
Black Americans in our country have endured every manner of ridicule and depravity so the idea that We must now be good negroes and coloreds is offensive and insults the very legacy of our historical existence here in America.
Black folks do not owe America any thing, we are not compelled or obligated to measure up to it's standards in part becuase these standards do not themsleves reflect merit or principle. From my vantage point we have already pass the tests of civility and worth the day we emerged on this planet....
whiterosebuddy
I don't feel compelled or obligated. I simply have a sense that excellence will be reward and that racial bias will be less of a role in not recognizing that excellence. The possibilities have expanded and that has nothing to do with proving or validating and everything to do with access to all the rights and privileges that come along with being an exceptional American citizen.
Orinocle
Your point being?? My theme was that Black folks should ignore the legacy of standards and relevance as defined by whites since we were not partners nor architects of these standards which BTW have failed the country for decades...
whiterosebuddy
My point is that I do not need to ignore that legacy. I simply need to have my own excellence and achievement acknowledged REGARDLESS of race. The standards I have personally for excellence have nothing to do with being black and everything to do with being the best I can be and not suffering for that because of race.
Orinocle
Again your reply does not resonate with me..I am posturing about a macro perspective and you are discussing yourself..... My point remains Black folks as a collective should ignore any standards and protocol defined and created by whites as we create and define the future during the Obama era.... On a personal note my genius and legendary being is in part a result of my Black cultural DNA an asset that I acknowledge and value..
whiterosebuddy
OK, look....you are talking about black folks collectively. I am speaking as one of the black ppl you include in your collectively posture. That does not make my assertion about me. Rather, it says that collectively INDIVIDUALS must EXCELL.
Blacks are not a monolithic group, excellence and exceptional talent occurs on a spectrum within the group, all black individuals are not equally talented. Ergo, race is the universal bias that impacts them collectively. However, attempting not to be the best because you choose to define it as some 'artificially imposed racial legacy' is NOT the answer.
When race is not the issue, for lack of success, it means everyone has to excell regardless or race. It has nothing whatsoever to do with an artificial racial bias.
Maybe, you believe that your race is responsible for your individual genius and that is where the disconnect is. I do not believe that at all.
As I stated, talent and individual excellence are about the individual what they do with it, how motivated they are and a choice to achieve and excell. That has zilch to do with race.
Racism is nothing more than restrictions people place on you based on your appearance. In short, it is a false social construct. Race has nothing to do with individual strength and talent.
Orinocle
Please enough babble..Race is a real construct regardless of its social origins ....Race has a perception value and reality value. ..Your reply was the latest buzz words nonsense often employed by the chatter class..
You are a social being just like me , your reality was shaped, influenced and is impacted by others on a personal level as well as an institutional level.
Unlike you I choose to leverage my racial capital and cultural genius you instead seek to leave it on the shelf and waste a very valuable asset.
I am a Black man willing to exploit every aspect of my existence and being therefore when I encounter folks like U who handcuff themselves it only makes it easier for me to excell, win, dominate..
So please go ahead and ignore and dismiss RACE...U do so at your own peril..
whiterosebuddy
Your ignorance on race is too profound for constructive dialogue.
Orinocle
Si in other words you cannot measure up to my comments and now you are in full retreat...Next next you ever decide to exhange posts with me either step up or get stepped on...
Miranda
I don't understand your point or your theme. I just asked the Human Resources manager where I work, neither does she. Could you clarify?
Orinocle
My point is simple Black folks should push Obama for a Black Agenda..Black folks should ignore those who do not have our interests first..Black people should ignore folks who lecture to Blacks about not being angry ...I cannot dumbdown this anymore....
Looks like one Obama supporter is finding the new president to not be the change he believed in:
Fred Tausch of Nashua is a frustrated, well-to-do businessman who got tired of watching politicians of both parties spending taxpayers' money. And so, spending $100,000 of his own money, he's trying to do something about it.
In full-page ads today in this newspaper and others, in radio advertisements and on a new Web site, the 37-year-old entrepreneur and investment manager emerges onto the political scene to provide an avenue for others upset about the size of the stimulus package and likely more spending measures on the horizon.
Tausch is a registered independent who, after voting Republican for most of his life, supported Barack Obama in the last election, even contributing $2,300 to the cause.
Tausch said he "got excited about his message. There was not a lot of fiscal discipline in either party, and I thought that when Obama talked about change, he was including that he would be more cautious about how we spend money. And that's just not the case."
allamr18
lol i guess he was thinking that barack would get elected and not spend any money to do anything.

You're totally twisted Conserv1.
Just how many do you think had buyer's remorse with George Bush? Lets see...what was his approval rating when he left office? Your thoughts on that?

Obama's Tax Cut For 95 Percent of Workers: $13 a Week
Remember when Obama was pledging he would cut taxes on 95 percent of working families? That campaign pledge he repeated throughout the closing months of the campaign? Well, take a look...
Q: What are some of the tax breaks in the bill?
A: It includes Obama's signature "Making Work Pay" tax credit for 95 percent of workers, though negotiators agreed to trim the credit to $400 a year instead of $500 — or $800 for married couples, cut from Obama's original proposal of $1,000. It would begin showing up in most workers' paychecks in June as an extra $13 a week in take-home pay, falling to about $8 a week next January.
There is also a $70 billion, one-year fix for the alternative minimum tax. The fix would save some 20 million mainly upper-middle-income taxpayers about $2,000 in taxes for 2009.
$13 a week!
Miranda
I think a family of 5 with a household annual income of $70k could really use $13 a week....that's a gallon of milk, a dozen eggs, a loaf of bread, 2 lbs of bananas, a full uncooked chicken, a head of lettuce and a 3lb bag of flour.
I'm in Boise, and yeah - you don't even have to go Wal-Mart to get that. Winco, an employee-owned store will do and does. Head of lettuce = $.98 each; bananas = $.49/pound......
Now - the milk = farming country or not = $2.49 to $3.10/gallon. And organic - pfft .....
Hey, fair enough. Wasn't trying to argue, but that made no sense to me.
Miranda
With coupons you can save some more and throw in 20 Ramen noodle packs! LOL
zackboston
yes $13 can make a difference. . . but i want to go to your grocery store. even if i take two buses to the market basket, that adds up to about $20 for me!
Miranda
LOL.....a bread store and a meat market are usually in the vicinity of a major grocery store, people just don't think to go to them because it means an extra 'getting out of the car, getting back in..blah blah blah"...LOL - but not long ago I went into a Walmart and had $10 and the cashier said 'wow...how did you get all this for $10 bucks?"...I didn't realize it looked like quite a bit for my little $10...but my Daddy taught me how to grocery shop on a budget!"
allamr18
no tax cuts only mean something when its businesses getting them. fyi i went to the market and got all that just last week lol
so during the campaign trail it was too big and socialism now its worthless and a waste huh? 1000 dollars more is a thousand dollars more regardless of how much it is a week.
RobM
Joe Kernan on CNBC in responding to the grilling the CEO's received yesterday made a good point. Too much of the grilling was done on a grandstand basis. In his opinion this is becasue the House Rep have to run for reeelcetion every two years. So in effect they are always playing to gain the crowds favor. He posited it is time to extend the time frame in which they serve to four(4) years so that ideology becomes a smaller issue.
What do you think of this idea?
By the way I do not think the public shaming in and of itself is such a bad idea. Unfortunately they acted like our bratty 3 year old whom refuses to take any responsiblity and apologize. Instead they held their breathe till they turn blue. They should have been made to go outside and get a switch.
The "House" is more ideological than the Senate because of the size of the congressional districts rather than the length of the terms.
Senators have to appeal to an entire state's constituency rather than small pockets of racists. Of course, there are instances where states have populations so small that they only receive one "rep" in the House, namely states like Wyoming, Idaho, etc.
Two-year terms are important b/c they allow for more immediate shifts in governing should the country demand that CHANGE is necessary. It was detrimental in 1994, but beneficial in 2006.
I've never thought public shaming was all that effective in influencing people to change their shameful behavior.
allamr18
public shaming only works on small things. like if your child steals a candy bar or shirt from the mall and you make the stand outside with a sign around their neck. your talking about companies making billions of dollars, you think they are intimidated by congressmen or women? Personally it all comes down to checks and balances. hurt them in their wallets, legislation and laws that keep them from circumventing acting with a kernel of honesty and morality.
So here's my question: How come way back when, when the Dixie Chicks casually commented that, on the night our former president declared an unprovoked war, that they felt, at that moment "ashamed to be from Texas," they were declared heretic, traitors, their records were burned, and they were practically tarred and feathered right of the airwaves. Yet when Rush Limbaugh says he "hopes Obama fails," he is considered by millions the quintessential patriot?
What sane person roots for the leader of their own country to fail?! You wanna say, "Boy, I don't think this is gonna work," or , "This is the dumbest plan I've ever seen" -- great. God bless. This is America. Grab a mic, and say your piece. But to incite millions to hope for failure? To hope that your country NOT prosper, that millions of American continue to see their lives tank, just so that you can then stand on the rubble and say, "See? I was right"? Can you begin to imagine that level of arrogance? Seriously. Where do they even sell balls that big? It just boggles the mind.
Where is the outrage at the arrogance of Rush Limbaugh? He's the lowest of the low.... wishing devastation on his own country. The Dixie Chicks were dragged through the mud & horse-whipped for being ashamed but the drug addicted bully Limbaugh wished failure on his beloved country and he has supporters giggling right along with him. How sad! No way a person can utter such horrible words and still claim they love their country.
Monie
"Where do they even sell balls that big?"
That's probably part of the problem....Limpballs physical balls are probably very tiny...just thinking of that makes throw-up in my mouth.
And since he's so deprived, he has decided to spew garbage....you know how it is, when the physical balls are small, the metaphorical ones grow. He's a clown...a fucktard. He ain't slick calling the President a man-child...we all know he really wanted to call him a "boy", that's what white supremacist do.
But like Miranda said, soon enough he will be exposed...and you know I will have the popcorn ready.
Miranda
Don't worry.....soon enough Rush will be exposed for the child molesting pervert that he is.
spirit_55z
He sure will Miranda. He goes to the Dominican Republic, right? He molests children of color, the dirty, filthy, bastard.
Miranda
He's a filthy, nasty, slimy, fat cockroach. He takes a suitcase full of those lil blue pills and he travels down there for disgusting romps with lil boys. He's a pervert...a sick and twisted pervert that captures the hearts of conservatives everywhere. Its a damn shame.
Justice58
Father God,
Let justice be done!
spirit_55z
What's even more perverted is the fact that this slime ball captures the hearts of conservatives everywhere.
It makes me wonder if a host of these mofos bag little blue pills and take trips to exotic locations.
He will be EXPOSED.
Monie
I've said it before and I'll say it again...Rush Limpballs is no better than bin Laden...he's just fat, sloppy, drug fiend who sits on a multi-million dollar contract to spew ignorance...and people happily listen.
Not only has Rush wished failure on the President, but he has influenced Republicans to the point where they even further make no sense...and there is no coincidence that one Republican Congressman even had the nerve to invoke the name of the Taliban as a model for the strategy Republicans need to become relevant again. The idiocy is trickling down, and even some republicans are losing their fuckin minds.
And for all those Republicans who got upset when Moveon.org ran a "General Betrayeus" campaign, they sat by and smirked while Limpballs mocked and disparaged soldiers who went to combat and decided that war was not the answer, and he called them "phony soldiers. Y'all already knew there was a double standard though, right.
Excuse my language all. but FUCK THE FAT BASTARD. His greasy ass could not even get in the military if he wanted to, he's overweight, and you know his type, he's a wuss and probably would have gotten a deferment, much like the other chickenhawks...all talk, ass-wipes and full of shit.
Okay, no more cursing for me today.
Shazza
Actually Monie, he got a deferment because of an anal cyst (I know EW!) Though Randi Rhodes says she had the same type of ailment but she served in the Air Force anyway. If you notice, most of the war hawks didn't serve. Remember Cheney said he had 'other priorities'? And Limpballs has a studio in his mansion so he doesn't deal with the real world at all, except for his pleasure trips.
Monie
I didn't even know that tidbit....an anal cyst. Quite fitting because he looks like one.
Another chickenhawk to add to the list on that side of the aisle. My, my,my...the gall of these people.
I think if Rush would stop trying to entertain and outrage, he'd be a lot better received. I've tried listening to him, and he just makes me so mad at the world that I have to turn him off before I have a stroke. Same with Beck.
Justice58
I've tried listening to him, and he just makes me so mad at the world that I have to turn him off before I have a stroke.
Read the transcript on Free Republic; easier that way.
Monie
ya know, I am all for free speech...that is one of the tenets we as Americans are proud of. But his vitriol can be toxic...and some of his followers bring some of his propaganda into the real world.
I mentioned above I had a white female co-worker who was essentially the white female equivalent of Rush. And on quite a few occasions she came out of her mouth with insensitive and insulting comments about Blacks, Latinos, and Gays(my manager was gay), Asians...we had a large member of Filipinos at my job. She had NO friends at work...we only tolerated her because she was knowledgeable about certain aspects of the job...but personality wise, she was a buffoon. And she kept getting passed over for a lead position...and had the nerve to wonder out aloud why she wasn't picked...and then try to allude that maybe the Filipino worker who got the job may have because of the often heard conservative argument of affirmative action at work.
Needless to say, I think his garbage can be dangerous...and quite frankly, homegirl lucky she did not catch a beat-down from me
A lot of the commentators cross the line between just commenting and incitement. O'Reilly and Hannity I can tolerate in small doses, but that's about it.
Somehow, I think the same is about to become of the left-leaning ones as well.
And yeah, I had to watch my mouth when I was working in DC...lol
Monie
Ya think the left leaning ones will become as bad as the Rush, Hannity, and O'Rielly, ....why is that....I don't think so.
I honestly have no problem with commentators spreading the consevative ideologies, and memes...even though I disagree with them.
It is the outright racism, xenophobia, and their whole "I'm gonna accuse you of being "less-American" because you don't agree with me attitude.
Rush was not slick when he called President Obama a "man-child" we all now that was code for "boy" and I think most of us here at JJP know the history and implications of calling a Black Man "boy" in our history.....and quite frankly, Rush is somewhat of a de facto leader in the Republican party...and it is his stinkiness that is also keeping a lot of minorities away, to the detriment of the party.
The dynamic's shifted. The left has to shout the right down, and go further across the lines of decency than even the right-wing guys had. Look at Sarah Palin's baby. Hell, look at the comments about Rush getting picked up for not just molestation, but molestation of "people of color."
I don't care how much you disagree, there's some lines you just don't cross.
Y'all (the left) are slowly turning into us. The difference is where we deviate from policy to attack the personal, the left starts at personal to discredit the policy. It's never (or better, rarely) "you're wrong, and here's why;" it's "you're racist/sexist/a homophobe, etc."
You can't talk to people like that. Trust me, we've tried. It doesn't go well.
Monie
I can only speak for myself and say that I mostly tackle policy first...and focus a lot on the hypocrisy coming from your side.
Now things may have gotten out of hand with Palin's baby (and I have to admit the circumstances were a bit strange if nothing much, but it should have been left alone) but let us not forget the whole Obama's birth certificate fiasco that lunatic Republicans and some supposed Democrats kept spreading.
Anyone I call a racist, xenophobe, sexist, or homophobe, I have the information to back me up. And D., there are PLENTY from your side who give us enough talking points to label a large majority of your party as such...that's just a fact.
One thing I've admired the left for is the ability to stay out of the mud.
Until now.
Justice58
And for all those Republicans who got upset when Moveon.org ran a "General Betrayeus" campaign, they sat by and smirked while Limpballs mocked and disparaged soldiers who went to combat and decided that war was not the answer, and he called them "phony soldiers. The nasty slob mocked soldiers who are giving up their lives as his trifling drug addicted ass can sit and spew hateful garbage. Mocking soldiers, who have fought & some died while their familes hearts are pierced to the core. God help me....I so despise this jerk. Where are you, God? How long...
Monie
Justice 58, Limpballs is a sorry SOB. There is even more. He even mocked former Sentor Chuck Hagel( a Vietnam vet himself) calling him Senator Betrayus when Hagel sided with Democrats on a resolution.
The unfortunate part is that he has a lot of followeres and many of them are our own bosses, co-workers, etc. I had one colleague in my laboratory who used to listen to him, and let's just say I often felt like physically putting my foot in her ass and fist down her throat, with her rather insensitive comments. I was warned about her when I first started working, and our manager would not promote her to a lead position because NO ONE in the laboratory cared for her.
See what I said the other day to you about the sound bite?
Besides, I think your outrage is enough. LOL.
Justice58
D,
Aren't you a soldier? How does it make you feel when someone, anyone mocks a soldier? Does it not wound your own heart? I'm not a soldier but it pains to me no end to hear anyone doing so. War is cruel & mean. I hate War. To have someone make a mockery out of the sacrifice the soldiers make every single day while he sits on his happy ass spewing poison ....makes me very angry.
Sailor, but that's not critical to your point...LOL.
You're talking about his "phony soldiers" remark, about a month or so after "General Betray Us." Here we go...
It's another example of something that he shouldn't have said the way he did (which he seems to do a lot). There was some truth in what he was suggesting; that all the military members trotted out by the antiwar movement are making stuff up that they could never have personally saw or been around. Which is why IVAW's Winter Soldier event last year went nowhere quickly, besides the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Only reason that I know that is because I've seen some of the documents that disprove their stories.
Nobody likes war, least of all those who have served during one. But there's no reason to lie about your service to make a political point. If I did that here and y'all found out about it, my (remaining) credibility would be shot. So it is with the people Rush was referring to.
I don't question their service, and yeah, it wasn't appropriate for Rush to do so. Flipside, if you put yourself in a position for aspects of your service to be questioned, in a way you become fair game.
RobM
Regulators, Banks and other financial institutions have for the last five to six years engaged in an incestous relationship called securitization. This form of incest occurs because a bank(1st local) could take loans(auto, home, credit card, school) of the same type regardless of quality and turn them into bonds with the help of the Morgan Stanley's of the world. Morgan in turn would keep them or sell them to investors around the world. This freed up the banks balance sheet to lend the same deposits again.
One consequence is all the institutions lowered their standards for loans as the Institutions had no responsiblity for the loans. Some one else held them. The smart institutions kept as little of this as possible. Now no institution trusts one another because none of them want to recognize their incestous bastards-securitized bonds.
Another consequence is that their is not the same amount of credit available because credit is now being rationed based on the old fashioned notion of know your borrower. This means credit standards are up for everyone. If you have a 700 credit score, a good job(I was going to add if you have a government job you were golden but after California that idea went to trash) w/ proof of income and a down payment of 20% or more you can get a great loan rate. If you are a businessman expanding your McDonalds you can probably receive a great loan. Everyone else is judged much more strictly.
This method of operating is not new. It does mean that the economy can not expand as fast as we all would like. Growth will be slower than during the last six or seven years. The question will be can the society remain cohesive under this situation.
The soundbite is the currency of TV news, the primary political information source for most of America - simple, nice, neat, easy to pronounce phrases that an announcer can whip off after the guy behind the camera starts waving that they have ten seconds left until the commercial break.
If we lived in soundbite sized homes, and worked at soundbite sized factories, and got soundbite sized bills, and had soundbite sized problems, soundbites might remotely begin to have a chance at being relevant.
But until the majority of the public gets tired of wallowing in their stupidity – and if it offends you because I am saying this, yes I mean you - it will remain the currency that counts, because we don't demand any better.
I’ll use Massachusetts Representative Michael Capuano as an example of what happens when you substitute soundbites for the real thing. Capuano went on a tear this afternoon during the bailed out bank hearings today on Capitol Hill.
Congressional Democrats have now agreed to a ‘bipartisan stimulus compromise’ supported by fewer than 1 percent of Congressional Republicans, on a plan to spend about $780 billion or so of your money trying to get the economy moving again.
We don’t know what’s in the bill now, because Democrats closed the doors and negotiated it in the middle of the night. In defiance of their public promises, they will push it to a vote before Members of Congress have had a chance to review it - let alone the public. And rather than this being the last big-ticket spending item this Congress will consider, it’s probably the first of many. The Obama administration says more funds may yet be needed for more bank bailouts. Hundreds of billions will be needed for health care ‘reform.’ There’s still over $400 billion in spending left to approve for the 2009 federal budget. And Congress will take up a transportation bill this Summer.
What will the 'fiscally conservative" Blue Dog Dems respond?
This is how the Blue Dogs describe themselves:
"The Blue Dog Coalition - who celebrated 13 years of leadership in 2008 - has built a reputation as a serious player in the policy arena, promoting positions which bridge the gap between ideological extremes. Many of the group’s policy proposals have been praised as fair, responsible, and positive additions to a Congressional environment too often marked as partisan and antagonistic…
The Coalition has been particularly active on fiscal issues, relentlessly pursuing a balanced budget and then protecting that achievement from politically popular “raids” on the budget."
Blue Dogs have already expressed their concerns with this bill, and threatened to block it if it is wasteful or bloated with unnecessary spending:
"We are writing as leaders of the Blue Dog Coalition to urge a redoubled effort to streamline the stimulus and recovery package to achieve the goals of stimulating and strengthening the economy on the fastest feasible timeline and ensuring that taxpayer funds are safeguarded from fraud, waste and abuse…"
Do the Blue Dogs care about balanced budgets? Do they oppose wasteful spending? Are they the taxpayer’s best friend, the conscience of the Congress, and the moderates who craft bipartisan solutions? Today is the day to prove it. If they help Congressional leaders pass this massive spending bill with no scrutiny, then they don’t really serve any purpose. And they’ll be reminded of it over and over again before the next election.

The Blue Dogs care more about being in front of the cameras. The Blue Dogs also played a role in Bush's policies taking effect.
"An international mathematics research team announced today that they had discovered a new integer that surpasses any previously known value “by a totally mindblowing shitload.” Project director Yujin Xiao of Stanford University said the theoretical number, dubbed a “stimulus,” could lead to breakthroughs in fields as diverse as astrophysics, quantum mechanics, and Chicago asphalt contracting."
