That's what I needed to hear! Barack is back! And I'm fired up and ready to go again! I think the President now realizes, as we all should, the campaign is over, but the fight will never end. Time to mobilize and take action again! I just left a voice message for Jim Webb in Virginia, one of the Democratic sell outs undermining the President over the Economic Recovery Package. I painted a picture for him...those long lines of Black folks in Virginia standing in the rain in November to vote for Barack Obama doing the same in '12 to vote again for the President and AGAINST him. I never trusted him, but I voted for him because the alternative, George Allen, was unthinkable, but I warned him if he votes against this Recovery Package, I don't give a damn if an active Klansman is on the ballot, I'm pulling the lever (and pray forgiveness).

lamh - i did mine day before yesterday and am looking forward to getting my state tomorrow and my federal next friday. lol
You're lucky you live in state that's issuing thrm. CA has a freeze until the idiot Gov figures out how to beg for a Federal bailout to fix the $42B deficit.
oh-oh: "The new chairman of the National Republican Committee will be in Boise Feb. 19 for a $500-a-plate breakfast event." That new chairman is, ya know, Michael Steele. We'll see how this turns out. I wouldn't worry too much about Boise; it's the rednecks for real from up in the northern part of the state and the southern part. My district here is made up entirely of Democrats, as is much of the town.
Texas_Girl: Ya know, while we go through this difficult time, I use as many events as I can to bring back those VICTORIOUS MOMENTS of his Primary WIN and his INAUGURATION! :>) :>)
1. Anyone following the Solis nomination. Here's the latest bullshit. I swear the ReThugs have ghouls who do absolutely NOTHING else but dig up sh*t on folks.
2. I watched a Book TV program I had TiVo'd on Michelle Obama this morning. The picture that graces the cover of that book is here. It's simply gorgeous.
And on yeah, the Special Olympics is getting ready to start here as well - that's Saturday. The torch from Athens, Greece got here yesterday.
whiterosebuddy
Loved that cover, wordsmith!
They had Jackie O..we have Michelle O....take me to the river...how does that song go?
It surely is. I was reading the story at the Washington Post. The comments were disgraceful, just disgusting. I registered just to respond. There too, I swear people get paid to jam as many negative comments as they can. I just don't have the time. I read a lot but commenting - it's takes time! I sure don't want to spend all my "internet time" swatting down idiots.

I have been noticing that ever since the inauguration the number of trolls at various websites have gone up.
As the President has emphasized since he began developing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the goals of the plan include both creating millions of new jobs and taking "steps to strengthen our country for years to come." On both counts, rebuilding America’s critical infrastructure is a central piece of the plan, and experts from across the political spectrum agree that investing in infrastructure is one of best ways to get "bang for the buck" in terms of stimulus.
Yesterday, in his first post at the Transportation Department’s blog, Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood announced a new group within his department dedicated to its role in the recovery plan, and today Vice President Biden joined LaHood and Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley to discuss the importance of these investments.
After touring the Laurel, Maryland MARC Train Station, one of the thousands of rail and commuter stations all across the country in dire need of improvements, the Vice President echoed the President’s message of urgency: "Quite simply, we cannot wait. We cannot wait another two weeks, three weeks, four weeks. We cannot wait. Our economic recovery package is now before the Senate. It will put us back on track to create and save 3 to 4 million jobs." The Vice President also referenced a new report released by the White House using Maryland as a case study to show the impact investing in infrastructure will have on our nation.

‘Gaping loophole’ blamed for lax peanut oversight Company wasn’t required to tell safety inspectors that peanuts had tested positive for salmonella
Washington — Federal food safety officials told a Senate panel Thursday that they only recently learned that peanut products from a Blakely, Ga., plant had tested positive for salmonella 12 times going back to 2007. In most cases, “the company is not required” to notify the government about such lab findings, Michael Chappell, acting commissioner of regulation for the Food and Drug Administration, told a hearing examining how peanut contamination from the Georgia plant spread to 46 states and contributed to eight deaths.
The mother of a seven-year-old son from South Burlington, Vt., described her family’s trauma after the boy ate peanut crackers and became mysteriously and violently ill. Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss said he favored a public-private partnership to make the food supply safer. Lifting a jar of Jif peanut butter, he defended the overall safety of peanut products. The Georgia plant, owned by the Peanut Corp. of America, is “one isolated facility,” he said. http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/stories/...

Army official: Suicides in January 'terrifying'
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- One week after the U.S. Army announced record suicide rates among its soldiers last year, the service is worried about a spike in possible suicides in the new year. If reports of suicides are confirmed, more soldiers will have taken their lives in January than died in combat.
The Army said 24 soldiers are believed to have committed suicide in January alone -- six times as many as killed themselves in January 2008, according to statistics released Thursday.
The Army said it already has confirmed seven suicides, with 17 additional cases pending that it believes investigators will confirm as suicides for January.
sad. sad. sad. just awful how we burned out those soldiers so badly they are taking their own lives due to the tremendous mental breakdown of combat without sufficient down time.

Harvard Law School Dean Elena Kagan
whiterosebuddy
Among the possible female candidates the president could consider are Elena Kagan, the Harvard Law School dean who has been named to be solicitor general. Nancy Gertner, a district court judge in Massachusetts. If Obama's interested in returning to the historic tradition of appointing a politician to the bench, the possibilities include Jennifer Granholm, the governor of Michigan and a Harvard Law School graduate and former state attorney general. Janet Napolitano is the former attorney general and governor of Arizona and now Secretary of Homeland Security. Diane Wood is a federal judge in Chicago. Sonia Sotomayer, a federal judge in New York, if named, would be the first Hispanic justice.

CNN) — The Associated Press is claiming ownership of the most famous image of the presidential campaign: Shepard Fairey's “Hope” depiction of President Obama in red, white and blue. The image itself, which now has a home in the National Portrait Gallery, is based on a 2006 AP photograph — and the news service says it deserves credit, and a share of the massive profits Fairey's depiction has generated. “The Associated Press has determined that the photograph used in the poster is an AP photo and that its use required permission," the AP's director of media relations, Paul Colford, said in a statement released Wednesday. "AP safeguards its assets and looks at these events on a case-by-case basis. We have reached out to Mr. Fairey's attorney and are in discussions. We hope for an amicable solution." Anthony Falzone, Fairey's attorney, says fair use protects his client's rights from using the photograph as a basis for his image. The concept of fair use allows breaches of copyright law based on the degree to which the original image is used, among other factors. Fairey, a Los Angeles street artist, has said he found the image online and created his now-famous depiction in early 2008. He says he has not profited at all from the work, which he donated to the Obama campaign.
Val
nonsense. The person that took the original pic didn't even realize the picture that was being used was his and he didn't have a problem with it. he also said he didn't have a problem with it's use.
So, you're regulating everyone straight to hell today, eh?

PANETTA VS. CHENEY: At his confirmation hearings, CIA Director-designate pushes back on Dick Cheney's comments to Politico this week. "I was disappointed by those comments, because the implication is that somehow this country is more vulnerable to attack because the president of the United States wants to abide by the law and the Constitution. I think we’re a stronger nation when we abide by the law and the Constitution," Panetta says. -- Jennifer DiMascio (4:30 p.m.) ALSO: POTUS will announce the members of his Economic Recovery Advisory Board Friday, according to AP. rikyrah: First: How can I post that Huffpost "HEADLINE"[the one with PRESIDENT OBAMA -OBAMA GOES AFTER CRITICS: "ARE THESE FOLKS SERIOUS?"and make it PERMANENT on my post?
It always CHANGES AFTER I post it. ***sigh***> ***shakin' my head**
President Barack Obama says the time for talk on an economic recovery package is over and "the time for action is now."
Speaking at the Energy Department, Obama made a fresh plea for the stimulus plan that the Senate is debating. He cited the latest bad economic news of jobless claims as another reason for quick action.
He said: "The time for talk is over, the time for action is now."
He also launched a shot at critics while talking about energy, questioning, "are these folks serious?"
Now, I read the other day that critics of this plan ridiculed our notion that we should use part of the money to modernize the entire fleet of federal vehicles to take advantage of state of the art fuel efficiency. This is what they call pork. You know the truth. It will not only save the government significant money over time, it will not only create manufacturing jobs for folks who are making these cars, it will set a standard for private industry to match. And so when you hear these attacks deriding something of such obvious importance as this, you have to ask yourself -- are these folks serious? Is it any wonder that we haven't had a real energy policy in this country?
For the last few years, I've talked about these issues with Americans from one end of this country to another. And Washington may not be ready to get serious about energy independence, but I am. And so are you. And so are the American people.
During his speech Obama also issued a strong critique of the GOP's economic policies, even though he didn't utter the party's name. He told the audience that:
In the last few days, we've seen proposals arise from some in Congress that you may not have read but you'd be very familiar with because you've been hearing them for the last 10 years, maybe longer. They're rooted in the idea that tax cuts alone can solve all our problems; that government doesn't have a role to play; that half-measures and tinkering are somehow enough; that we can afford to ignore our most fundamental economic challenges -- the crushing cost of health care, the inadequate state of so many of our schools, our dangerous dependence on foreign oil.
So let me be clear: Those ideas have been tested, and they have failed. They've taken us from surpluses to an annual deficit of over a trillion dollars, and they've brought our economy to a halt. And that's precisely what the election we just had was all about. The American people have rendered their judgment. And now is the time to move forward, not back. Now is the time for action.

Looking At Fem2ptO and the feminist Web: The list of the top 30 blogs was released and surprise, surprise there is only one blog listed that is written entirely by a WOC. Racism once again in the feminist community.
Trumystique
Congratulations to you. But there are some great WOC feminist blogs like yours and Brownfemipower (before it disappeared, reappeared etc) and WOC PhD. I have had it with those "feminist" read white feminist blogs since the primaries and even before with that kerfuffle about Seal Press. I am so sick of them. I am a feminist but they dont make me proud to be one- in so so many way - they dont, cant and never will speak for me. I am always spending time having to explain why I am not like a "that kind of feminist" because for so many black folk that means racist, man hating entitled white woman. Grrr....

Congratulations! You are a deep and profound sista and I admire your writing. Keep on doing what you do.

Womanistmusings, congratulations on making the list of top 30 blogs.
"Somehow, magically whiteness is deemed better at articulating our struggles than we are."
This statement struck me in that it is the very reason why you're the only WOC who made the list. I enjoy your blog immensley, and we definitely need to hear more from WOC. White feminist will never speak for me, NEVER!
Thanks for the congrats but for me celebration will really happen when my sisters join me. I am tired of white feminists controlling a movement that belongs to us all and I shall continue to call them on their BS.

Phelps may not compete at 2012 Olympics after photo furore• 'I was stupid,' says swimmer after pipe-smoking incident
• Record-breaking American will take time over 2012 decision guardian.co.uk, Thursday 5 February
Michael Phelps is not certain that he will take part in the 2012 London Olympics after he was caught up in a wave of controversy this week. In the wake of the photograph published in a British Sunday tabloid showing the American swimmer smoking from a pipe commonly used for marijuana, Phelps told his hometown newspaper, the Baltimore Sun, that the intense public scrutiny has left him contemplating whether to compete at the 2012 Games.
In his first public comments since the story broke, the 23-year-old Phelps spoke to the newspaper inside Baltimore's Meadowbrook Aquatic Center after finishing his daily workout.
"This is a decision of mine that I'm not going to make today and I'm not going to make tomorrow," said Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals last summer at the Beijing Olympics. "It's going to require a lot of time and energy and a lot of thinking for myself – but also talking to Bob [his coach, Bob Bowman] and talking to my family and just deciding what I want to do."
Phelps, who was arrested for drink-driving in 2004, said he is disappointed that he let down not only his fans, but also his mother, Debbie. "Seeing my mom reminded me of how it was the day after I got my DUI [driving under the influence], and I swore to myself I'd never do that again," he said. "This is just a stupid thing of mine that I did, and I have to live with it."
Bowman indicated that he thinks Phelps – who has won a record 14 Olympic golds overall – will persevere and compete in 2012.
Phelps has not admitted to smoking marijuana but also did not deny the authenticity of the photograph, taken during a party last November at the University of South Carolina. When asked by the Baltimore Sun whether he regularly smoked the illegal drug, Phelps said he did not. "This was stupid, and I know this won't happen again," Phelps said. "It's obviously bad judgment, and it's something I'm not proud of at all.

-Poor baby Don't compete, poor baby. Don't worry; someone will take your place. Just meet up with your buds and hit the bong...uh, I mean, "work out"

Maybe he's got a Marion Jones problem?

He doesn't like the idea of having to be looking over his shoulder to see if somebody is recording him doing something stupid like smoking from a bong or getting caught because of a DUI.

Not to mention ..how much more individual glory can he earn after the 8 medals? Anything less, would be a let down...not to mention all the drugfree training he would have to do...hahaha
I would have said it was just flavored tobacco / sessha LOL heh.
Admiral_Komack
I'm guessing he doesn't want his buds to be revealed...in a drug test.
spirit_55z
Admiral, you know he said he's contemplating it because of the media scrutiny, but I don't buy that as the only reason..... He'll have to be drug tested for compettions. You know for "doping.' I don't know, something smells...

Dude was inhaling from a bong...he has graduated from a simple joint....he doesn't want to be tested.
