Ooooooo, I remember that speech.. I was screaming at the TV. Everyone with a disability has their challenges. But he didn't even bother to make the distinction that Gov. Palin's son is reported to have Down Syndrome. He called it Autism.

AAAAAAGGGGGHHHHH. What idiots. Public education is for all.

The Disabilty Act is based on the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Folks need to recognize!!! These children are being discriminated against as bad as, IF NOT WORSE, than black kids were "back in the day."

I work with families who have children with special health care needs. Kids grow up. They want to work too, They want lives like everybody else. THESE MOFOS want to cut out support that can make the difference between a homeless person who is 'a little slow" and the guy who keeps the emergency stations stocked in your local Target.

Or the kid who is dyslexic, but a genius, and needs remedial reading to figure it out. IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) is a law with any $$$ to back it up. The result is STRAIGHT DISCRIMINATION against kids with special needs.

PLEASE, do it for my son who is on the autism spectrum, do it for JJP. Do it for Obama. JUST MAKE THAT CALL. SEND THAT E-MAIL. JUST DO IT!!

Here is some more information specific to "Centers for Independent Living" Every state has them. And the title is self-explanatory.

Act Now: Persuade your Senator to keep IL funding in the stimulus bill. Ask them to vote AGAINST the Nelson-Collins Amendment, which would eliminate all stimulus funding for VR and Independent Living.

This new amendment is named after two Senators: Ben Nelson (D–NE) and Susan Collins (R-ME). The funding is listed under “Rehabilitation and Disability Research.” This funding is not research related. Tell them your Center will use the funds to hire critically needed employees to help people with disabilities gain employment opportunities.

Senators we need to target IMMEDIATELY to change their minds:

First Priority: Nelson (Nebraska), Collins (Maine), Specter (PA), Voinovich (OH), Snowe (ME)

Second Priority: Bayh (Indiana), Bennet (Colorado), Begich (Alaska), Conrad (North Dakota), Landreiu (Louisiana), Lincoln (Arkansas), Lieberman (Connecticut), Shaheen (New Hampshire), Tester (Montana), Udall (Colorado), Udall (New Mexico), Warner (Virginia), Webb (Virginia), Carper (Delaware), Klobuchar (Minnesota), McCaskill (Missouri).

Third Priority: Contact all Senators

You must communicate the following to your Senators in order to secure this funding:

1. CILs need employees. They can make immediate hires. Centers work with people with disabilities to help them become employed, and provide the support needed so that people are job ready and can find good jobs that are sustainable.
2. Centers help people to remain independent in their own homes and communities, and help prevent people from being institutionalized. From 2004-2006 CILs transitioned over 8,000 people from nursing homes and institutions into the community, saving state and federal government well over $160 million. Centers help ease the financial burden that states have to bear on institutional expenses by keeping people OUT of institutions.
3. Ask them to keep the funding for the Independent Living Program in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The cutting of education funding has me steaming, absolutely enraged! We just voted on renewing a levy for the schools here in our district, they are trying to cut funding … it's ridiculous! Now this! I just got off the phone with Rep. Norm Dicks' office and Senator Cantwell's office. I sent a message to Senator Murray, because for some reason I didn't have the correct phone number. They are all Democrats, but they need to know that voting against this bill is NOT a good idea.
