On the - other very worthy sites/groups to watch, follow what the Sunlight Foundation is doing - and in particular the varous groups they support all of whom are as a condition of any grants they receive required to be making data public & more accessible. Lots of great projects and API's into government data being created as a result.

re Karmi above - first you fundamentally don't understand HOW money is "made" - it literally is the case the government CAN just print it. There may be consequences (print too much and the value of a single unit of the currency tends, all else being equal, to lose buying power - i.e. price inflation) but it is, in fact literally the case that the government "makes" money (well the US Mint makes specie, the Federal Reserve "makes" the rest).

Second - if you read the specifics of Stimulus bills (the House & Senate bills differ currently) the money goes to a raft of projects - something for most of the branches of government (which is after all how the government spends money) - including such "Democratic" projects as building VA facilities, funding Veteran's cemeteries, expanding mass transit (okay perhpas this is a somewhat "Democratic" matter - but it is rather non-partisan), building out a smart energy grid which will save vast amounts of currently wasted energy (which in turn saves the economy as a whole vast sums, reduces the US's dependence on oil, helps curb the need for more power plants which in turn helps reduce greenhouse gases etc.

Yup, very "partisan"

(in case your sense of irony is missing - I'm being ironic)

Sure, somewhere in the bill are some Democratic priorities - stuff like helping working Americans directly, but also done in very smart ways such as in ways that raise the amount in every paycheck (by reducing withholding rates) instead of by giving out a single, lump sum. Lump sum payments tend to go towards paying down debt or into savings - both very good things - but also minimally if at all "stimulus" - giving people slightly more in every paycheck in contrast tends to lead to around that much more spending each pay cycle (since many people tend to spend much of their paychecks - at least people who are in the lower & middle classes - heck lots of folks in the "upper" income brackets do this as well - part of why the US has such a low savings rate on average - we spend what we earn (or a bit more in many cases).

Lots of other nuggets - certainly some flaws and portions which will take longer to implement than others - but overall very good things for the most part, with lots of smart checks & requirements (funded Auditors general for every program, requirements for detailed proposals from each branch in a very rapid timeframe (30-60 days mostly), and built in requirements that everything goes up for the public to review and watch (requests for bids, proposals, spending reports etc onto recovery.com)
