STATE OF THE BLACK UNION AFTERNOON SESSION OPEN THREAD IS UP!!
I realize this comment might be unpopular, but MIchelle Singletary got on my nerves. I agreed with some of what she said but not all of what she said. That "we can't depend on the government to help us out" argument no longer holds when you see billion dollar banks getting bailed out by same government.
She is making money! It's all scam. Be the one raisin in the milk, confirm what the antagonists think and you get to be the exception. If she really believed her spiel she wouldn't need to be so hostile about it. There's no righteous anger just animus.
It's a re play blksista. Why they would have her on after the first session The State of the Black Union is beyond me. Prior to the replay that had caller after caller on saying "stop asking government to do for you" and "get off the couch and do for yourself" and "stop asking for handouts". How is asking that our government treat us fairly and equitably "asking the government to do something for us"? What exactly are we supposed to be asking the government to do for us? Free us from slavery? Outlaw Jim Crow? Give us equal rights? What?
"When black people talk about honest feelings, it's called blaming. When white people talk about it, it's being called held responsible." ~Dr. Michael Eric Dyson on MSNBC responding to Pat Buchanan re: NY Post Cartoon.
Steele fixing to get a beat down by Malveaux. Sharpton will smirk.
Why come they don't have Jesse and Al on the stage at the same time?
And what? NO DICK GREGORY? Malveaux gotta put a beat down on Steele in order to keep my attention this afternoon.

Jessie Jackson = Getting the stimulus money down to the people is going to be more difficult than getting the money out of Washington. We must follow the money as it comes into our states.
Are young black men going to be "shovel ready"?
Maxine Waters = We must all understand all aspects of the stimulus package. We must first take advantage of the most vulnerable. Get the food stamps to the people who need it. Get the COBRA and Medicaid money in the package. Take advantage of the tax cuts. NO discrimination by contractors. Make sure cities only contract with people who do not discriminate. Hate is such a strong word and it's a useless emotion. Just say you find Dyson annonying, self important, talks too fast and too often has very little of substance to say. That said, I don't share your opinion of Dyson, but I respect your right to express your opinion because you know what they say about opinions and aholes, everyone has one. :)
I'm impatient at times with Dyson myself, but I don't hate him.
I think today he redeemed himself on a lot of levels.

From Michael Eric Dysons fertile mind on Obama
What we gon do with what he is?
If after Obama's second term all we can say is that Barack Obama is a great president, we have wasted an opportunity to educate about the defense of the vulnerable. The measure of his success if about HOW MANY BLACK PEOPLE HE BRINGS WITH HIM.
Put pressure on America to allow this man to do what he gotta do.
You love the God that Jeremiah Wright introduced Barack Obama to.
KatH
I find it hilarious that Tavis Smiley thinks that he's going to hold Barack Obama "Accountable". If Smiley said "Barack Obama lives in Washington, DC", I'd verify that information.
I will say that I was sure that Smiley was going to invite President Obama to come again this year and would make another big stink when he couldn't. I guess Smiley did learn a little something from last year's totally one sided "feud".

Mishelle Singetary should be on CNN A "submitted" woman whose husband is head of her household Stop defining yourselves as "consumers." Budget, get out of debt, no credit cards, stop taking on debt, look at where your money is going. Make sure you save from that piece of job you got. Get your money straight.
While we waiting for this money to trickle down you gotta do what you gotta do.Stop spending crazy; make do with what you have.
The only thing is she's using her own standards of a religious model as if that's the only and correct version. Plus why is she married to somebody who she out-earns that she spoke about publicly? Now if he runs off with all her money what's she gonna say then?
And why didn't she put her pastor on blast when he deliberately wasted $450K of the Church's money because he didn't sign off on a contract dealing with their remodeling of their church edifice?
Now that I can get with - I already got rid of the credit cards and have myself on a plan to clear up all debt, including taxes, in the next five years. I plan to buy my first house in the next two years.
I am getting my money straight. Now Singletary needs to tell the same advice to her pastor, who just blew $50K of the congregation's money on church building rennovations; $450K that didn't need to be wasted if he signs contracts in timely fashion, and had the nerve to brag about it during service one Sunday back in 2006.
I knew then and there that her church was not one I wanted to be a member in, because of that shyt pulled by her pastor.
Singletary has been on CNN before. That's where I first came across her.
I'm not a fan of the meme "submitted women whose husband is head of the household." But then I'm not a fan of taking 'The Bible' in any way, shape or form literally.
I saw Michelle Singletary's new column - bookmarked it to read tonight when we get done with all the family stuff today.
I have covered Tavis' events in person for the last five years, and decided I couldn't continue to waste money like I did because it is the same people, talking about the same things, and what comes out of it is ANOTHER DAMNED BOOK.
And he's also trying to pimp Obama after hating on him as strong as he did. Does anyone on this board believe that President Obama's pic on the new book, "Accountability" is a coincidence? Do you think that Missy Hillary's pic would have been on the cover if she'd won? If, God Forbid, McCain, had won?
I'm tired of Tavis and his attempt to be a "Black Leader" when all he is, is a MARKETEER. Period.
We should all ask ourselves why does Tavis smile, and why are we watching?
I talked about it three years ago after I went to Houston and heard the same old shyt in Houston, and Atlanta before that, and in Jamestown after he caught hell for attempting to market the slave experience in 2007, and blamed Daphne Maxwell Reid once he caught hell for that.
Read this, and you'll probably follow the rest of the evening with new eyes:
"Does anyone on this board believe that President Obama's pic on the new book, "Accountability" is a coincidence?"
Of course not, this is about getting back at Obama. And look at the expression on Obama's face on the cover, it's not exactly flattering in my opinion. It makes him look like a slick politician who's plotting his next political move. I've grown tired of Tavis and his believing the hype about himself, that he's the main spokesperson for Black America, B.S. There is no spokesperson for Black America.
rikyrah

You wouldn't have known about the book, Rikyrah, because Tavis keeps it under wraps until the start of the Annual Negro Super Bowl.
John Conyers was the one who told him to make the contract a "Covenant", no disrepect to Joe Lowery, but in all honesty, it was Conyers who came up with the idea in Atlanta back in 2005 at New Birth Baptist Church, where the Rev. Val
who gives a crap about Tavis? He won't make 1 dime off President Obama. God don't like ugly.
whiterosebuddy
OMG...I am not watching..thanks Sepia.
I tell you folks are just so crass about marketing Obama.
This is the same Obama who Tavis dissed during the primaries and would not accept his wife coming in his place!
See my post above...I said the same thing when I saw that book cover.
Tavis the HATER, but will not ignore ways to make a dollar. LOL

I cant believe this kentucky fried mealy mouthded nigra, I really cant. Why didnt he write a book during the 8 years of the Bush administration calling for them to be accountable??!! He's a hating ass coon, self important coon. 10 years of this so called state of the black union and what has he accomplished??? Not a f_cking thing, he's useless!

OMG Miranda, he's just so despicable to me, for all the reasons everyone has outlined in this thread.
This picture sums it all up, peep the Menace II Society reference lol...
People really need to be careful about how they "criticize" President Obama. I'm for freedom of speech, but folks trying to cultivate audiences need to be really careful.
THe Co-Pastor at my church made a less-than-flattering remark about President Obama last Sunday...and she got ***crickets*** from the whole congregation. Don't Knock Barack.
Miranda
LMAO....**crickets**.....I can see it....too funny.
whiterosebuddy
I know!!
Instead of crickets my mom would say."it got so quiet ..you could hear a rat pissing on cotton"!!
Where do folks get off critiquing Obama. Isn't like haven't they heard, no matter what Obama does he can't mess up this nation any worse than the last 20 Presidents?
Obama has inhierted the worse condition this country has seen in the past 50 years!!
Whatever he does will be an improvement.
Town
I don't have a problem with criticizing Obama ---we SHOULD criticize Obama. We SHOULD hold Obama accountable.
But while we're demanding "accountability" from Obama, we should also be demanding accountability from our local, state and federal officials as well.
And if we're going around holding Obama accountable, we should hold his criticizers accountable too.
Obama's critics don't like being held accountable.
Santelli didn't like being held accountable by Matt Lauer.
Tavis didn't like being held accountable by the Tom Joyner Morning Show listeners. That's why he cut and run.
The loudest ones screaming for accountability on Obama are the ones most likely to hate being put under the microscope themselves.
It's not that black folks don't want to hold Obama accountable. They just want everyone else to be held accountable too. If Tavis was true to wanting accountability, he would have held John McCain and Hillary Clinton accountable, too.
That's why people diagnosed Tavis with end-stage Hate.
Val
"It's not that black folks don't want to hold Obama accountable. They just want everyone else to be held accountable too."
There you have it.
whiterosebuddy
But that's my point Town.
They ain't holding all those folks accountable, never have and never will.
So, as far as I'm concerned...even though Obama can do wrong...it ain't my job to hold him accountable.
Let the same folks who didn't hold everyone ELSe accountable do so.
Ya know, I don't even wanna picture that - but that - that is a good one.
Obama has been in office, what?, 45 days - if that - and now what? everything supposed to be all better. Over at Alternet or Huffpost - pics of the president at the b-ball game. And a couple of posters asked "Does he ever work?"
The thing about the Obamas is that THEY have epitomized 'the American Dream.' They ARE the American people, goddamnit.
Oh...p.s., I stopped listening too much to Tavis Smiley when I figured out that he was all about himself.
whiterosebuddy
Yeah...first time I heard my momma say that...I reflected on it and thought ...dayum if u can hear THAT it is awfully damn quiet...hahahahaa
I don't remember her exact words, but I do remember that she had us whopping and hollerin Jesus until she tried to diminish Barack, then we all went stoic-stone-faced on her. Hands went from clapping to down in the laps.
Think_About_It
Hollering. That reminds me of a time a minster had folks shouting and asked for $1000 OFFERING/SEED DONATION. Folks came out of that trance right quick :).
That minister must have lost her mind talking about our Beloved President in church...We all still shouting because he is IN the White House and ain't studying no haters (preachers or not).
Miranda
OMG...........ROFLMAO...........I can so see it!! LMAO!!!!!
mypov123
Yes, I've seen it and it's ridiculous. The cover alone annoys me, because look at the picture of Obama, the expression on his face. It's not exactly flattering, it makes him look like a slick politician who's plotting his next political maneuver.
If I had known this before, I don't know if I would have even put up this thread.
Miranda
You gotta be kidding...............................I am too thru..........LAWD!
Sepia
Girl, let me tell ya! He betts be glad interactive TV doesn't exist 'cuz I would've reached into the TV and slapped him back into his momma's womb!
Now all of a sudden he writes a guidebook on how people can keep the government accountable? Where was this book for the last 10 years? This ain't about accountability this is about vindictiveness against PBO. Having Obama on the cover and calling him out by name proves that.
Exactly - not just him, but others including the media whores who bent over backwards, forwards, up against the wall, lying down, on the dryer.... to fuck the American public over with any kind of accountability.
whiterosebuddy
Guuurl, we would have had a line of folks and those SaaaLAPS would have been like Dominos, and Tavis would have become a bobblehead doll.
that's gonna be the breakthrough on tivo 2015 - the "Slapafu" button sitting right next to "Play"
mypov123
Exactly.
mypov123
The State of the Black Union...let the hateration begin! lol
Since Pres. Obama will make an appearance (via a taped message), maybe that will keep Tavis from whining....no it won't lol.
mypov123
I love how on the State of the Black Union homepage, it's easier to spot John Kerry and George Bush than Barack Obama lol, think that was intentional??.
Myth
Will they be addressing whether or not young black men are "shovel ready"? Obama setting the tone with opening video
What's going to happen if jobs are manual labor jobs, like rebuilding infrastructure - highways, schools, bridges, etc? Should black folks refuse to do them then?
And "shovel ready" is a phrase that's been used lately when talking about jobs relating to rebuilding infrastructure.
One of the reasons I have absolutely NO problem with immigration or "illegal immigration" was growing up on a farm I worked my ass off. From the age of 13 until out of high school, I worked summers bucking hay, topping corn, changing sprinklers, digging ditches or thru-ways, picking fruits. It is HARD fucking work and the majority of the workers outside of kids, white kids, (high school & college) were Hispanic men & women who were supporting families. And we knew that when the summer was over we could back to school but they had to continue with their life. And the work that we did to have money for college or to pay for school was more REAL LIFE to them than us. If you follow my drift. (And not to mention that my paternal grandparentsand maternal great-grandparents were all immigrants.)
rikyrah
I don't believe Black folk will refuse manual labor jobs, if at a decent wage, which should happen, because I don't believe a Democratic President would suspend Davis-Bacon. On the local level, we have to make sure that Black folk have the opportunity at those manual construction jobs.
I would hope no one refuses because it's 'beneath' them. Living under Bush's administration was 'beneath' me but I'm still here. And, actually, ya know, any work "at a decent wage" - like socially just and livable wage - is good.
Unless I'm wrong, I'm thinking Bush suspended Davis-Bacon during or after Katrina, rather.
And manual construction jobs can lead to other things believe it or not. Trade jobs like plumbers, pipefitters, electricians, etc. Ya gotta somewhere. I know it would be probably kill me 'cuz I'm old, but I think rather than lose my home I'd be grabbing a shovel.
whiterosebuddy
I was not suggesting that they refuse a job. Just that I was only hearing this 'shovel ready' at the State of Black Union..and was thinking...so what are they saying about us?
But this is stuff I use to get my family talking which includes siblings, nephews/nieces, kids, in-law kids - grandkids are too little, but we'll get to them too.
whiterosebuddy
OK, gotcha. It's just that I was hoping you were working and not in need of the services of ICU.,,,when you said you were off to the ICU.
