However as a senior citizen who has spent a considerable time with the "old" NAACP, I have some history to share. The problem for the NAACP from the days of post "Brown V Board of Education" to the present time is the organization's Board of Directors. After the historic win for the organization before the Supreme Court, the Board slowly became a haven for social climbers and professionals intent on adding prestige to their resume. Obviously internal politics became more important to Board members than expanding support for struggling branches across the country.
In 1976 the Board elected Rev. Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks executive director of the organization. Hooks an active Republican, and a personal supporter of Richard Nixon who appointed Hooks to the FCC as the first African American commissioner. Hooks election as executive director of the NAACP came almost immediately after he left the FCC.

The NAACP was struggling to raise its membership levels from 200,000 to 500,000 nationwide, but the administration of Hooks simply poured gasoline on an already raging fire. Hooks basically killed a weakly struggling organization. IMHO Hook's sympathy was really with Republican ideaology and his election was like putting the "Fox in charge of the hen house". Hooks set about dismembering the legal muscle of the NACCP, effectively crippling its effectiveness as a legal enforcer of civil rights in America. This is how he did it by the numbers.

(1) Locally in New York he broke all of the Jewish ties that the NAACP had established since its inception in 1909. This removed not only decades of financial support, but also deprived the NAACP of other critical political and social resources and contacts.
(2) He took the NACCP Legal Defense and Education Fund to court as executive director of the NAACP, claiming that the Legal Defense and Education (LD&E) Fund was a separate organization and as such he petitioned the court for a permanent restraining order prohibiting the LD&E Fund from using the well known established NAACP logo on any LD&E Fund documents whatsoever.
(3) He moved the NAACP headquarters to Balitmore further isolating it from the long term Jewish supporters in New York. The NAACP was founded in New York in 1909 in response to the explosion of brutal lynchings and other violence against Negros throughout the south and the southwest. One of the original founders was a young Jewish Rabbi, so the close connection between New York Jews and the NAACP was strongly historical, not incidental.

The organization was originally structured to actively seek redress in the American court system. The logic in this design recognized that a poor weak disenfranchised minority could only bring about change through the courts. Back in the day when Walter White became the executive director he worked with Thurgood Marshal to create the LD&E Fund in 1940. As an integral part of the NAACP, the purpose of the fund was to provide a revenue stream that was capable of supporting the meager salaries of a cadre of lawyers who had dedicated themselves to working full time on civil rights cases. It is obvious that the "education" part of the name of the fund was referring to the education that the NAACP lawyers needed to become astute in the different practices of courts around the nation. For example, many of the state court procedures in Massachusetts are different from those in California.

Many NAACP branches around the nation have developed excellent youth programs that have been highly successful in both attracting AA youth but also inspiring enthusiastic leadership among the youth. The Youth directors bring their respective young people to the annual NAACP convention in Ju;y only to be given polite acknowledgment and lip service by national NAACP management and members of the Board. Nothing turns young people off faster than adult disinterest in what they (young people) have accomplished. And so it is with the NAACP national leadership year after year and yet they wonder why they can't seem to develop a viable youth group within the national organization.

I personally wish Mr. Jealous the greatest possible success as he tries to implement change in the NAACP, but IMHO I think he has a tough job ahead. People have been trying to streamline the Board for years without success. But hey, we have Barack Obama as POTUS, so anything is possible, right?

BTW, The American Prospect Magazine current issue has an in depth coverage article on Mr. Jealous as the new President and CEO of the NAACP. It is titled "The Other President". If you get a chance check it out.....

Excellent article!

However as a senior citizen who has spent a considerable time with the “old” NAACP, I have some history to share. The problem for the NAACP from the days of post “Brown V Board of Education” to the present time is the organization's Board of Directors.

IMHO Hook's sympathy was really with Republican ideaology and his election was like putting the “Fox in charge of the hen house”. Hooks set about dismembering the legal muscle of the NACCP, effectively crippling its effectiveness as a legal enforcer of civil rights in America.
