Burris Defends Himself At Press Conference

In a very combative news conference, Sen. Roland Burris (D-IL) said “he didn't have any inappropriate contact with allies of ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich about his desire for Illinois' Senate seat, and he defended his evolving explanation of what happened as an effort to make sure all the information comes out,” the Chicago Tribune reports.

Burris's attorney “repeatedly stepped in to try to answer questions as reporters insisted the senator take the microphone.”

Politico notes Illinois Republicans “are calling on Burris to resign; he's facing a possible perjury investigation in his home state; and his Senate colleagues may face new pressure to launch an Ethics Committee probe to determine whether he should be expelled from the body.”

Obamas dine Southern-style for V-Day

CHICAGO — President Obama and the first lady chose to spend Valentine's Day at an upscale restaurant owned by Oprah Winfrey's personal chef and featuring Southern-style cooking.

The Obamas arrived at Table Fifty-Two, near the North Side of Chicago on Saturday evening.

Reporters missed the arrival of the couple for their first Valentine's Day date as president and first lady, when the motorcade left as the bus carrying the press went around the block to meet up with them, according to a pool report.

The pool arrived at the restaurant on Elm Street shortly after 7 p.m.

Winfrey was arguably the most high-profile, early supporter of Obama's presidential campaign.

Table Fifty-Two's menu, created by chef and cookbook author Art Smith, features buttermilk fried chicken, pan-seared catfish, grits and parmesan cheese biscuits.

One of the dining area is described in reviews as having a “shabby chic cottage look with a stone bar, hickory flooring and a copper tin-punch ceiling,” and another, upstairs as having “a more formal vibe with Venetian wallpaper and chandeliers

It's a somewhat surprising choice for the Obamas, who are known to favor Spiaggia and Topolobampo.

NBA All-Star Game message

Obama back to old routines in Chicago

CHICAGO — The first family’s mode of arrival to their Chicago neighborhood Friday evening was the first sign that things had changed since they were last in town.

President Obama, his wife, two daughters and mother-in-law boarded Marine One at dusk from Chicago’s O’Hare airport. A helicopter carrying reporters trailed behind as they flew beside skyscrapers and over highways clogged with rush-hour traffic.

The choppers landed in a park along Lake Michigan in Chicago’s South Side, a seven-minute motorcade ride from the Obamas’ Hyde Park home.

The rest of their first trip home since moving to Washington in early January was a three-day study in requited affection between a president and his home city.

Obama’s proximity was the talk of Chicago. “If you see the streets blocked off and big flashing lights,” a bartender at The Grill on Michigan Avenue explained to a customer Friday night, “you’ll know it’s him.”

A local news channel ran a report on how the Obamas’ Hyde Park home has become a magnet for tourists — some of them venturing out to the neighborhood this past weekend to try to catch a glimpse of the president.

Small crowds gathered on street corners to watch his much lengthier motorcade whiz by. Local restaurants feature menus listing “President Obama’s favorites,” and an ad on V103 boasts that it’s “the president’s radio station” — followed by a sound bite on the R&B station from Obama circa when he was a senator, saying he listens to V103 because he’s over 40.

The Obamas relished their time at home, too.

The president was back at his old workout haunt, the gym at Regents Park, the luxury apartment complex where his friend Michael Signator lives.

Obama stayed at home his first night in town. But he and Michelle Obama had Valentine’s Day dinner at a restaurant owned by Oprah Winfrey’s former personal chef. And the president stepped out in jeans and sneakers Sunday night and traveled a few blocks to his friend Marty Nesbitt’s house to watch the NBA All Star game.

Obama had recorded a message set to air during half time, where he asks Americans to get involved in their communities by fixing up local basketball courts and public parks, or writing to troops stationed overseas.

Obama’s visit was not without work — his is a round-the-clock job, after all.

The president received his daily briefing throughout the weekend. He traveled with his press secretary, Robert Gibbs, and Michelle Obama brought along her deputy chief of staff, Melissa Winter.

Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to the president and close friend of the family from Chicago, also made the trip.

The weekend reprieve followed a big victory for Obama on his economic stimulus plan.

He returns to Washington on Monday, where he faces a busy week — signing the stimulus bill into law in Colorado on Tuesday, spending the night in Phoenix, Ariz., before unveiling his plans to stem home foreclosures on Wednesday and then traveling to Canada on Thursday in his first trip abroad as president.

Barack Obama says his two daughters are fans of Hannah Montana and Beyonce, but think anything to do with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton is “yuck.”

The Democratic presidential contender told celebrity magazine Us Weekly that his daughters, Malia, 9, and Sasha, 6, got to meet Beyonce backstage at a concert and “they just love her to death.”

“They're pretty down on Britney and Paris and all of that. They think that's very `yuck,'” he said.

As for his wife, Michelle, Obama said she has a star crush on Stevie Wonder.

“I've been teasing her because Stevie fell off the stage at one of our events,” Obama said. “I said to her, `This is your favorite performer, and you push him off the stage?' Fortunately, he was OK.”

The Illinois senator described himself as a “pretty cool” dad who tries not to embarrass his daughters even when he's dancing on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” as he did in October.

Though campaigning keeps him away from his family, Obama hasn't skipped a parent-teacher conference.

“He did miss one of Sasha's dance recitals in December and was broken up about it,” Michelle Obama told the magazine. “No one wants to miss 20 6-year-olds in red cowboy hats tapping to `These Boots Are Made for Walkin'.'”

Chicago Tribune's Jill Zuckman to join Obama administration, working for Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood

Jill Zuckman, a Chicago Tribune Washington correspondent and frequent guest on political talk shows such as MSNBC's “Hardball” and Fox Broadcasting's “Fox News Sunday,” is leaving to join President Barack Obama's administration in the Department of Transportation.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a Peoria Republican and former seven-term member of the U.S. House, has picked Zuckman to serve as assistant to the secretary and director of public affairs.

“I'm so excited about this. I think this is going to be really fun,” Zuckman said by phone Sunday. “I'm excited about going to a department in the administration that's going to play a huge role in hopefully putting people back to work. There is so much money for transportation projects around the country, and I hope that that helps to stimulate the economy to get the country moving again.”

Zuckman is the second Tribune Co. reporter in the nation's capital to accept a position with the new administration this month. Cissy Baker, vice president in charge of Tribune Co.'s recently unified Washington News Bureau, on Feb. 7 informed staff that Peter Gosselin, who previously had reported for the Los Angeles Times, accepted a job as chief speech writer for Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

“Jill is a terrific journalist and colleague who contributed much to our coverage of Congress, national politics and the 2008 presidential campaign,” Chicago Tribune Editor Gerould Kern said by e-mail. “We wish her the best in her new assignment.”

Zuckman reported on politics and Congress for the Tribune for the last 8 1/2 years, having previously worked for the Boston Globe, Congressional Quarterly and Milwaukee Journal.

A 2002 winner of the prestigious National Press Foundation's Everett McKinley Dirksen Award for Distinguished Reporting of Congress and a 2007 honoree of the New Hampshire Political Library, Zuckman has covered four presidential campaigns, the Florida recount, the rise of Newt Gingrich, the Democrats' return to power and, most recently, the appointment of Roland Burris to the U.S. Senate.

“I had made the decision a while ago that it was time to leave journalism,” Zuckman said. “In the course of my job search I discovered that Ray LaHood was looking for someone to join him at the Department of Transportation and I realized that would be a perfect fit for me because I've always admired LaHood's attempts at bipartisanship.”

LaHood, who presided over the House of Representatives during the impeachment of then-President Bill Clinton in 1998, is one of two Republicans in President Obama's cabinet. Defense Secretary Robert Gates remains in that post from the previous administration.

Zuckman said that the possibility of working for LaHood was a recent development, but she was mindful of potential conflicts of interest during that time. “I was acutely aware that I needed to be careful not to get involved in stories where there would be a conflict,” she said.
