It has reached the point where “nationalization ” will occur and I am for it. The devil is in the details. The correct term is liquidation because the banks are technically insolventThe details involve what happens to the assets of the financial institutions. In this discussion will will use banks only.

Institutions like Citigroup(C) and Bank America(BAC) were allowed w/ the repeal of the Glass Stegall act to go into brokerage, insurance and other financial business. Liquidating a bank normally means the FDIC gives the deposits and good loans to another bank as well as any other assets that constitute Tier Capital. With institutions like C and BAC you will sell their insurance company and brokerage firms and any other liquid assets. the deposits and good loans will go to other banks. What is left are the toxic assets.
These toxic assets,mortgage bonds- consisting of Alt-A, subprime and who knows what else and credit default swaps(B&C), are the reason the banks are technically insolvent. The issue is what are they worth. Their worth is important because B&C's count as capital for a bank. Since they are now worth less than before they are making the institution holding them in large quanities insolvent.
In the liquidation the government will end up w/ them and give the banks taking the other assets cash for them.

Thanks. I have mix feelings about it. My problems has to do with Geithner. I think his relationship with Wall Street is a double edge sword. So we will see.

You're so right about children's television programming. I have a 14-month-old son. When he started watching t.v., I realized right away that racism is on it's way out the door.

It's a good idea. Nationalization is the wrong word it should be liquidation. The devil is in the details. Some of the banks assets are very good and can be sold. Some of them the government will end up with. How they are handled is the real devil as private money will attempt to have the government(taxpayers) take the risk w/ little return and then buy them on the cheap when they become profitable(this of course assumes the economy will improve in the future).
