I finally got to complete a post about my Inaugural Experiences but I have more to add. DC is great - but it's way too cold here. And I'm very sick, but I tried to go the White House when a postal employee told me it had been opened. The lines were just as deep as the Inaugural ones. There are special commemorative postage stamps by the way!! I am so glad I came though I'll need a while to recover. This truly was a once-in-a-lifetime event!!

Two Chinese Dairy Producers Get Death Penalty for Selling Tainted Milk

Two Chinese milk producers have received death sentences for selling dairy products laced with melamine, a toxic compound that led to the deaths of at least six children.
Dairy middleman Zhang Yujun and dairy producer Geng Jinpin were sentenced to death by China’s Intermediate People’s Court, the New York Times reports. A former dairy executive received a suspended death sentence and three other men were sentenced to life in prison, the story says.

One defendant who received a life sentence, Tian Wenhua, was the highest-ranking dairy executive to go to trial. The former chairwoman of the Sanlu Group, Tian had pleaded guilty in December to wrongdoing in the case. Reuters calls Tian “the woman most widely blamed for the tragedy.”

On Tuesday, Chinese lawyers filed a rare class-action product liability case on behalf of families whose children died or became ill after drinking the tainted milk, the Times story says. The suit filed in the Supreme People’s Court in Beijing seeks $5.2 million in damages from 22 dairy companies.

Sorry to put a dampener on things, but I have to pose a rhetorical question, and it is a question I've posed in this forum before Mr. Obama took the oath of office.; it's even more disturbing for me, now: Why does MSNBC's Chris Matthews think it's OK to refer to President Obama on national television as "Barack?" I cringe everytime he does this. I do not think he is a bad man, but I suspect Matthews is among those paternalistic dinosaurs who cannot bring themselves to defer to anyone of color, even the President of the United States. Of course, this does not compare to Rush Limbaugh's "I hope he fails," comment. But even this seemingly benign remark is a reminder that things may have changed, but not that much. Let's hope Matthews knows to stand up when the President enters the room., at least

Truthfully ra, I believe it is a tendency for media to try and speak quickly. Part of the reason most officials are spoken of by there LAST or FAMILY names has to do with discerning who is who. How many people named George or John could we be speaking of at any given time, so saying Bush and McCain makes sense when you are spitting of an idea. Now how many guys named Barrack? Just one.

I think we have to publicly criticize them and remind them that their convenience is a sign of disrespect for many, including me. I am reminded of the custom of Blacks in our nation having to call white people Mr. with no attention or regard for the age of the white person being referenced. And the parallel custom of ALL Black people, regardless of age being called by their first names. We have to BREAK out of these casual customs that carry out the weight of our nation's history of oppression based on racism. We owe President Obama and our nation's ancestry at least that.

So I've decided to give up on political news shows. It's time to ween myself off of them.
No more MSNBC, Morning Joe, or Situation Room. Gonna just get my news from online, and JJP.

The sad part is I actually like to watch the shows, but they get so stupid sometimes. I can't stand it. Like MSNBC, I like Olbermann, but sometimes he can be too much. Morning Joe when Scar is not on, is actually okay, and I actually like the Situation Room, but Ed Henry just irritates me. The best thing about CNN, is Cafferty and Jeannie Moost.

Anyway, is there any other news programs that ya'll recommend that just gives the straight news. I beginning to really like BBC America, but of course, it really just news from the world with an "American" twist.

I hear PBS, has good shows??

NPR would be a good source if it weren't going through tremendous budget cuts. One of the shows aimed at African-Americans called News & Notes (hosted by Farai Chideya) is getting axed.

There is one other show you might be interested in called Tell Me More hosted by Michel Martin. If they don't clear the show on the radio where you live, they host it online and provide a podcast.

Democracy Now is good. Really any source that isn't so Western dominated is a breath of fresh air.

I have found that it's sometimes better not to watch tube in the morning, but listen to the radio.

There's PBS' Morning Edition.

Me, I listen to the line-up at my local Air America station. I listen to Stephanie Miller until 11, and then listen to Ed Schultz between 11 and 2. Stephanie has her Mooks, and has a Friday show with two black sistas, Frangela, who are comedians. Stephanie is based in LA. Steph is popular among some folks because she plays some real good Seventies and Eighties soul and disco in between talk.

Ed Schultz, of course, comes out of Fargo. A few black folks have called into his shows. He's a gun-toting, labor-loving liberal talk show host.

I don't know where you live, but you also might try streaming these shows.

BBC America is good, but I would rather get the real deal from the Brtis. One of these days, we're going to have to listen to the real BBC and al Jazeera in English on the cable line-up.

I couldn't believe how nonsensical the American news media was until I moved to Toronto. The CBC and BBC News was like a breath of fresh air.

I live in Dallas, and I don't know if Air America in on here. Plus, I word early morning to the afternoon, so I rarely have time to listen to the radio (besides which, I only have a clock radio in my bedroon).

At my job, while there are a number of Democrats, it's a hospital, so I don't usually listen to talk radio, unless it's one of those top 40 types. I usually listen to my IPOD.

I really only watch TV from 5: 30 to 6:30am, I TIVO most of the shows I did watch

There is an Air America affiliate in Dallas, and it's an AM station, KMNY AM 1360. It's the only one in Texas.

They have two brothers in their line-up, Jack Bishop and Tunde Obazee, along with Ed Schultz, Randi Rhodes and Thom Hartmann, who is really, I think, deep.

Stephanie and the Mooks came here for a show at the Barrymore Theatre a couple of years ago. I was there!

It's too bad that we can't get CNN International because it is a completely different channel from its US counterpart in terms of the content and the way they cover stories in-depth. At this point I just watch BBC World News and Olbermann. I cut back on watching Rachel Maddow because I got tired of her "talk me down" shtick after awhile. It's like she has to find something to worry about just for the sake of worrying.

I hear you regarding Rachel's "talk me down" shtick. It really started to grate my nerves awhile ago.

I remember a few posters refered to her as "Chicken Little" shenanigans much earlier. At that time, I was still giving her the benefit of the doubt.

Funny thing is, when David Frum was on her show back he criticized her sarcastic style, I totally was on her side. I am ashamed to admit it now, but it can be annoying.

I weaned myself off right after the election, and Im glad I did. I didn't realize how those shows were effecting me until I gave them up. They were pissing me off nearly every day. The Inauguration was the first time I've watched any news channel since Nov. 4th. I get most of my news from the internet, I occasionally watch MTP on Sundays but that's about it. Im not going back to that drug.

I am a happier person for not looking at the jacka** on the political news shows.

Blood pressure is down....smiling more at work...not pissed off when I go to the gym.

How about C-Span?

C-Span's morning show can be entertaining, but after a while it gets boring hearing some of the nuttiest stuff from both Dems and Repubs, especially from people who seem elderly and just want to talk to someone.

CSPAN is better than comedy central. I love the call in programs. The poor host sits emotionless as callers "talk crazy" for about two minutes and then the host says, "Thank you for your call." The other day an older black woman called and instead of answering any question even in the range of what the guest was talking about, she said something about ex-VP Cheney shooting "a man in the head" and then she went on about, "how people need to pick up the garbage on the white house lawn." It was hysterical. I love CSPAN and booktv.

Hate poltical shows. Just give me the facts and I'll analyze them myself. Watch enough political "talk shows" and you end up sounding like a blog.

I like the News Hour with Jim Lehrer. Old school journalism - you know, where they checked information before it went on the air.

If you get any of the BBC channels, you do receive the news as it appears in the UK. It is vastly superior, at this moment in time, to the dreck that passes for news in the US. Hopefully, President Obama will nominate FCC commissioners, and Congress will pass legislation, reinstating rules prohibiting media organizations owning/controlling mulitiple outlets in the same city.

pbs is good during those times, al jazeera, bbc is good. bill moyers and gwen ifill are good, fareed zakaria is great he comes on on sundays. umm outside of those id say newspapers and internet sites. be careful of not going to extreme leaning sites because they will exaggerate of get things wrong

If you've got DirecTV (or is it Dish Network?), I really liked Link TV. There's more of a international documentary format than a news and politics one, but its still good informational programming.

Can we talk about Caroline Kennedy?

Was anyone watching MSNBC a about 10 minutes ago? Tamron Hall was interviewing some woman named Julie Menin who was throwing Caroline Kennedy under the bus for taking her name out of the running for the NY senate seat.

A report has surfaced that the reason Caroline dropped out was because of some tax and housekeeper issues. So this woman said that Caroline had to have known about this beforehand, and that she has unnecessarily caused chaos in NY state. She also said that this could hurt female politicians because what Caroline did makes women look weak, and that she probably took her name out the running because Paterson wasn't going to pick her. This woman came off like Caroline stole her man!

So, what's the heck is going on in NY? Why is Caroline so hated?

Julie Menin founded the Women's Campaign Forum, and they supported....wait for it......Hillary Clinton for President. Menin also wrote an article on Huff Po trashing Obama right before the Inauguration as not really being about "change".

Menin is a hater who went after Kennedy because of her support for Obama.

Ah-ha! So that explains her attitude.

Maybe because she has absolutely no experience with governmental issues besides being a Presidents' daughter. Why should she get a pass because she went to Harvard? Why especially so when there are go solid people with experience but without the "cred" she seems to have.

HRC's experience was her husband - pun intended.

What I'm interested in, is how the same people who say Caroline wasn't "experienced" enough to be a Senator can justify the appointment of women who have taken over their husband's Senate seat in the event of his untimely death. Where did their experience come from? A will??

I don't think that it is as much about experience is that she was proven inept when she did speak in public. They attacked her language much in the same way that they attacked Palin.

For a state that voted in a woman who clearly moved there for political purposes - I really don't know.

Housekeeper and Taxes Are Said to Derail Kennedy’s Bid.

ALBANY — Problems involving taxes and a household employee surfaced during the vetting of Caroline Kennedy and derailed her candidacy for the Senate, a person close to Gov. David A. Paterson said on Thursday, in an account at odds with Ms. Kennedy’s own description of her reasons for withdrawing.

The account emerged 14 hours after Ms. Kennedy announced that she was taking her name out of contention for the Senate seat vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton, and as Mr. Paterson, according to two well-placed Democrats told of his thinking, was leaning toward selecting Representative Kirsten E. Gillibrand, an upstate lawmaker in her second term in Congress.

Hard feelings toward Ms. Kennedy were clearly building among the governor’s staff on Thursday, after a dramatic evening in which she was reported to be dropping out, then wavering, then ultimately, shortly after midnight on Thursday, issuing a statement ending her candidacy.

The person close to the governor said Mr. Paterson “never had any intention of picking Kennedy” because he had come to consider her unready for the job. The person did not describe the exact nature or seriousness of the tax and household employee issues.

But other Democratic operatives and people who talked to the governor disputed that account, and said that he had all but decided to select Ms. Kennedy as senator, and that his staff was arranging a press conference for late this week.

An aide to Ms. Kennedy said Thursday that while Ms. Kennedy had not been told for certain that she was the choice, there were strong indications that she would be.

During the early afternoon Wednesday, the aide said, Ms. Kennedy became aware of what the aide referred to as a “personal situation” that could prevent her from fulfilling her duties as senator. The personal situation was not related to the seizure that her uncle, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, suffered during an inauguration luncheon on Tuesday, the aide said, declining to be more specific.

Another aide to Ms. Kennedy, while not denying there were issues that emerged during her vetting, said that there was nothing that surfaced that would disqualify her from the appointment, and that the Kennedy camp and the governor’s operation had been discussing how to publicly disclose the issues.

Virtually no one in state politics on Thursday was willing to make a bet on the appointment the unpredictable governor might make in the end. And the governor and his aides remained shocked at the recent turn of events and stung by criticism of their handling of the process. They have maintained almost complete silence since Wednesday afternoon.

Several people who have spoken to the governor said he had decided on Ms. Kennedy some time ago. A Democrat operative with ties to Mr. Paterson said the governor told Ms. Kennedy last week that she was the choice, but that he would use the next few days to do “a little misdirection to keep the suspense up.”

A person close to the governor adamantly denied that assertion.

“The fiasco of the last 24 hours reinforced why the governor never intended to choose her,” the person said.

The aide to Ms. Kennedy said she called the governor around 3 or 4 p.m. on Wednesday to tell him that she would be withdrawing from consideration for the appointment. According to the aide, Mr. Paterson told Ms. Kennedy to take a day to think about it. At no point, the aide said, did the governor tell Ms. Kennedy she was out of consideration.

“He was saying she was a contender, she was involved, and things were going the way they were going,” the aide said. “He did not tell her either way that it was yes or no, but that she was still being considered.”

At that point, the aide said, Ms. Kennedy began consulting with friends and family. Around the same time, news outlets, including The New York Post and The New York Times, began reporting that Ms. Kennedy had withdrawn.

The Paterson administration initially refused to respond to reporters. When they did, Errol Cockfield, a spokesman for Mr. Paterson, said in a very brief interview around 7 p.m. that the governor had called reports that Ms. Kennedy was withdrawing “just the rumor of the day.”

But at the time, according to Ms. Kennedy’s aide, the governor and Ms. Kennedy had already spoken about the possibility of her withdrawing. And a little over an hour later, Mr. Cockfield asked that the statement not be published.

Ms. Kennedy’s own political advisers appeared at times to be unable to reach her on Wednesday night. At one point, Ms. Kennedy was drafting a statement reaffirming her interest in the seat. But the aide said that Ms. Kennedy ultimately concluded that she would go ahead with her plan to withdraw.

Between 10 and 11 p.m., the aide said, Ms. Kennedy called the governor to thank him for giving her time to think it over and definitively withdrew from the race.

In a statement sent by e-mail at 12:03 a.m. Thursday, Ms. Kennedy announced she was withdrawing from the race for personal reasons.

“I informed Governor Paterson today that for personal reasons I am withdrawing my name from consideration for the United States Senate,” the statement said.

The Senate selection, and Ms. Kennedy’s withdrawal, eclipsed all other issues in the capital on Thursday. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg traveled to Albany to address lawmakers about the state budget, but reporters asked him only for his reaction to Ms. Kennedy’s actions. Mr. Bloomberg had supported her candidacy.

“I’ll probably give her a call today and say, my thoughts are with you,” the mayor said. “I wish her all the best and I think she should continue to stay involved in public service. She’s a great New Yorker and her husband is a really nice guy that I like.”

Assemblyman Carl E. Heastie, the chairman of the Democratic Party in the Bronx, met with Ms. Kennedy last Friday and heard her pitch.

“She told me why she thought she’d be the best senator and we talked about politics in general, her family, it was a good meeting,” he said, adding of the latest development, “nothing surprises me in politics.”

I sometimes come across millinery and clothing that are so ugly, they're beautiful. Style or color...bizarre but it draws me near.

I'm going to give Miss Re some slack on this, because I am just glad she had those bazooms under control; I was afraid she was going to bare some breast and strike a few Repubs blind or cause them heart attacks--not that some of those evil cusses don't deserve them. She dressed well, she had a flamboyant hat that is one of a kind (it was custom-done, dodo birds) and while it wasn't one of the best songs she ever did, she did well with the eyes of the world on her.

At the Neighborhood Ball on Tuesday night, 14-year-old Victoria Lucas challenged Obama to do "The Bump" with her. As the elated 9th grader told People the next day:

"He was just a very smooth, cool, laidback dancer. He was just like a normal person," assessed Lucas. "You would never think this dude earlier today was sworn in as our next president.

I found that whole bit offensive. Cool to be black is it now that Barack is president. Isn't it nice the way that whiteness can ignore the systemic racism we live with everyday. Is it cool to be over represented in the prison population, or under educated, used as cannon fodder by police. Reading your MIchelle Obama piece, it's very much hits the core of why Black women so connect with Michelle Obama. Even though, from the very beginning, they've been trying to shove her into the 'BOXES' that they have for Black women, it's been like putting a square peg into a round hole - IT DOESN'T FIT. It seems like Michelle Obama pushes back, without seeming to push back, forcing them, slowly (very slowly), to see her as a complex, REAL human being, and not some stereotype.

In the various posts I have written about her, I keep trying to get to the bottom of why she more than any other figure in recent history has become so symbolic to me of black womanhood. I find that no matter words I use, I am still at a loss to adequately convey my complex emotions in regards to her. In Michelle I not only see myself, but a reflection of so many black women that I know. Perhaps part of her appeal is her ability to touch us all on many different levels all at once.

You keep on writing about it. Sooner or later, it will hit the mark, but I understand what you mean. There are those who say we objectify Michelle Obama when you write a piece like that. I disagree. I don't think we objectify her, we are relieved. We are relieved to see ourselves FINALLY.

There was some woman, I think you wrote about her, who wrote that Michelle 'showed her Whiteness', along the campaign trail, because she talked about motherhood and dressed in J.Crew. My response to that foul article was, Michelle is an Ivy-Leagued trained attorney, what the hell is she supposed to be wearing? Oh, because she's a BLACK woman, she's supposed to be dressing like L'il Kim, Kellis and Foxy Brown? What makes certain White women so uncomfortable when a Black woman stands up and says, the first role I will ever have is being a MOTHER. Why does that upset them so?

That's the upper middle class children of PUMA's whose mothers did everything possible not to be mother's so as not to spoil their revolutionary cred(LOL at my contempt for them). Now faced w/ the reality you can do what African American women have known all their lives, they are so disappointed in themselves they do not know how to act when they see someone w/ what their heart has been telling them for years.

Perhaps somewhere in their historical subconscious they know that it was black women who nursed and cared for their children because they were too concerned with their vanity, and it reminds them that they are not all that deserving of the pedestal they've always been placed on.

Hell Yeah! It was the black woman that raised their children, while white women took the credit.
