Man can you imagine what gonna happen for the people who wherever the Obama's choose to go to church. I know you go to church to worship, but you know for some people the church is a fashion show. You wanna bet some people will be decked out like it's Easter every Sunday, and everyone will be on their best behaviour...right?
I hope the Obamas choose a black church. I know it would probably be more political to attend an "integrated" multidemoninational, but Obama an obviously Michelle particulary are steeped in the Black Church experience. I know with the whole Trinity UCC brou-ha-ha, but F(*& it. If you were raised in the Black church, then no other church can compare

Posted this in Fri open thread in response to concern about Obama porn and their children People on this site have posted about Obama porn. I am being provocative. I am using your words to make you think about what you are doing. I find it close to fetishism and it needs to stop. I am very very old fashioned in regards to protecting children. The point I am trying to make is that there is no difference between pimping athletes and releasing "porn" pictures of children; something is being gained and even if they are consentual- w/ sexual porn consent is given. We are talking about female children in a society where they are pimped to sell everything and as soon as it becomes pubresent sexual, it does and will(my reference to Miss Cyrus). We know from the JJP staff what their life will be like at Sidwell and the pressures they will be under. Add to that someone whom will be standing outside the bathroom waiting for you is an enormous invasion of privacy. To be photographed as a style setting child(Michelle alone made a dress inventory disappear in a recession), damn near every day will lead to its own set of issues. What I want is for the children to be off limits period. No following them to school, no knowledge of what their wearing, what toy hangs from their bookbag. Amy Carter lets the world know she likes teddy bears and the next thing she dozens coming through the door. How many do you think were for access to Jimmy? As to authorized pictures; even this has become to much for me. I do not want to know about your children or anybody else's. I do not want you to know about mine. Simply because they have the SS is not enough to dissuade me it's OK. I see a lot of people commented on how bad early stressed athlectism can be for children so people recognize the danger. Let's just extend it to them.

This still doesnt make any sense IMO...what exactly are you comparing? What exactly is your point? I'm sorry, but this post is rambling. Also, I would hope you understand Rikryah's figurative use of the word "porn" as opposed to the literal use.
RobM
Miranda You need to reread the post. I took into account your use of porn. Perhaps it's because I'm older but words like porn, pimping and bitch have negative connations. You still have to watch what you say. I really suspect that everyone is so overjoyed w/ Obama becoming president you are willing to let things slide. But damn near every poster here will be screaming on the first set of photos they think inapproriate. I what to set boundaries now especially the children.
I can't quit crying. Every time I see an image of the Obamas or Barack alone or all of them standing on the back of the train, all of the people waving, smiling, filled with hope . . . I just boo hoo and boo hoo some more. Even the polls showing folks are feeling optimistic and encouraged by him, that most people think he's grand . . . I don't think I can stand it. I'm going to pop with joy before the inauguration.
Every now and then, listening to the news, to the details of some hideous, intractible problem Obama's going to be facing, listening to the man himself speak with intelligence, thoughtfulness, hope, my husband and I will look at one another and say "can you even imagine if it had been John McCain?"
Can y'all imagine John McCain in this position? The man so uninterested in anything beyond the power of the position and the title, the one who doesn't understand the economy, the one whose campaign was utter chaos, the one whose lobbyist-policymakers insist we are a bunch of whiners who need to snap out of our negative thinking?
Every day I am grateful beyond measure that we got this man at this time in our history. And I feel a sense of relief not unlike being rescued from danger. I know he can't fix everything and he'll be likely to disappoint me at some point. He's nowhere near as much of a lefty as I am.
But Lord, what a relief to have a smart man in charge. A brilliant, educated, aware, knowledgeable man leading this country in these desperate times. I am profoundly grateful for that. We couldn't have made a better choice.

Barack Obama thinks he's worth $160 million. That's how much he's spending on his inauguration. To put this number in perspective, it's 4 times the amount spent on President Bush's 2004 inauguration. Granted, Bush's numbers don't include money spent on security, but his security certainly wouldn't have come close to what Obama is spending since he has opened up the National Mall to the public. From the Guardian:
President Barack Obama's inauguration next week is set to be the most expensive ever, predicted to reach over $150m (£102m). This dwarfs the $42.3m spent on George Bush's inauguration in 2005 and the $33m spent on Bill Clinton's in 1993. Part of the spending includes emergency funding announced by the White House on Tuesday to help with the soaring costs. Most of this new federal funding will be to deal with the huge influx of people, estimated 1.5 million to 2 million.
A White House statement said that President Bush "declared an emergency exists in the District of Columbia".
If there is snow, the costs will grow higher. The long-term forecast suggests there is a chance of snow on Sunday and again on the day of inauguration, on Tuesday.
Barack Obama thinks he's worth $160 million?
Whew Lawd.. I don't know what to say about these haters!
Val
I love this article written against this garbage. Here is the article debunking the nonsense Justice.
The media myth about the cost of Obama's inauguration by Eric Boehlert
I went over to Wizbang to post the article but low & behold, my comment has to be approved now. They probably won't approve it. They would rather believe a lie! Dirty rotten scumbags!
pjamma
So the only thing I found of substence in the "article" is that the dollar is doing much better against the pound then it was six months ago.
Miranda
So let's get this straight...they proclaim PEO is spending 4 times the amount spent on Bush's inauguration...but then admit they didn't include money spent on security for Bush's inauguration in coming up with that statement?? Huh?? So they actually admit to lying and continue right on as if they didn't??
Pathetic, they are REALLY pathetic.

So, there has been this talk on news programs on wether or not barack owes something to the black community. Anyway one aspect that hasnt been talked about has been HIV/AIDS prevention in general. So i started looking to see what baracks position is on dealing with it because we all know that it affects us and hispanics 20 times worse than whites. what i found was that barack and hillary clinton were two of the few people who supported Syringe Exchange Programs. Since Ronald Reagan there has been a federal ban on syringe exchange and weve only seen an increase in the rates of hiv/aids in the black and hispanic community. anyway heres an article about it allhttp://www.harmreduction.org/index.php
Plantsmantx
Well, he doesn't "owe" me any more or less that I would expect from any Democratic President.
pjamma
I think the issues Obama want to tackle are those that he has first hand experience with as part of the black community in Chicago such as education, economy, jobs and military/foreign vs. local funding. But over the past 8 years these have become general problems in US and it may now look like he isn't focused or concerned with the black community. I think he is working for everyone and by default that includes blacks.
Micheline
Agreed. And lets remember that while America gets a cold, Black America gets a pneumonia. We are the canaries in a coal mine.

Hi everyone, I've been lurking for a long time, and enjoy reading you all tremendously. I haven't seen anyone comment yet on Tavis Smiley's appearance on MTP just now. Has anyone seen it? I'm fuming at the guy, I felt nauseated listening to him. He seems so envious, besides himself.
And, is it me, or is he trying to position himself as the Obama's "Frederick Douglass". He kept saying something to the effect, "there has to be a Frederick Douglass to challenge Obama". I don't have a problem with that, but does Tavis plan on playing this role??? The arrogance...
What do the good people of JJP make of it? I thought it was kind of gross, personally.
Town
I haven't seen the clip, but Tavis has been trying to position himself as the VOICE OF ACCOUNTABILITY ever since Obama dissed his State of the Black Union.
Speaking of which, is there going to be a State of the Black Union this year?
I have no problem with "accountability." Obama SHOULD be held accountable. But there's a difference between holding him accountable and just plain hatin' and Tavis comes off as hatin'. If Tavis was really about accountability he wouldn't have run away from his spot on Tom Joyner when the listeners started to hold HIM accountable.
OhPuhleezee
Yeah, there's gonna be one. Late February maybe? I think this is the 10th anniversary. I have no clue who is supposed to be on the panel. I think it'll be interesting. We'll still be on our Obama honeymoon, so if he starts hating too hard on Barack somebody is gonna call him on it.
I have to collect my thoughts I what I just saw (DVR.)
Tavis acts like he is the voice of the Black people. WAS HE ELECTED? No. I definitely believe he has a greater sense of self that is actually agreed upon by the community, which is why he had to find a narrative to support how wrong he has been ALL THE WHILE.
I cannot believe the audacity he showed while describing the Obama strategy, implying Obama was hiding his Blackness to white voters. The nerve. For Tavis, how dare Obama have a different sense of self, and the capacity to communicate his identity in a way that wasn't through a prism of race alone but rather a prism of a complex understanding of difference (race, class, connection to feminist thinking, agnostic to christian, foreign living experience, family background etc.) I had to think on this one all year. Tavis, it is clear is still focused on the one and only identity that it is the only one he is versed in. THIS is why Tavis is no longer as relevant as he ONCE was. There is no way to have a discussion on race without also engaging the intersections of other identity groups. Obama is not the Black guy from the South. He's the Black guy with a white mom and and an African father, raised in Hawaii and Kansas, with an Asian stepfather and half sister... He doesn't fit squarely into the traditionally discussed notion of Blackness- the only one Tavis speaks of.
He got caught not knowing as much as he claims about Black people. Obama should be his intellectual hero, but alas Tavis isn't smart enough to realize it.
Tavis saw himself as the gatekeeper to the Black vote, and as we all know, he was dead wrong. Tavis is not an activist and not an elected official, he's a talk show host struggling to amplify his own sense of self importance. Fredrick Douglass? NOT ON HIS BEST DAY. Tavis is a punk.
Tony Smith
But Fredrick Douglass criticized the "saint" of his time -- Abe Lincoln. Today, black people act as if criticizing Obama is akin to treason. Before Obama, Tavis was a "brutha"; now he is a "punk." Good grief.
And I do not view blackness in traditional terms. My progressive politics incorporates feminism, gay rights, economic justice, disability rights, etc. Tavis was not ostracized because he believed in "old school" blackness. He was ostracized because he criticized Obama. Period.
Because Obama invokes Lincoln whenever possible, perhaps liberals and progressives should decide to play the role of Frederick Douglass, other abolitionists, and Radical Republicans in Congress during his presidency. Obama is giving us an historical metaphor to criticize and push him. This might be the only way to do so without being called a "punk."
Criticizing the issues is not what Tavis is doing. What Tavis is doing is what many from the RIGHT are trying to do... assert a politicization of race and identity that is purposefully malicious and hating on Barrack. His simplicity of thought on race issues SPECIFICALLY having to do with Barrack Obama is where his arrogance is most evident.
Like I, and many have said here in JJP, Tavis fancies himself a gatekeeper but who cares about his gates. Can ANYONE really say that his show on NPR and PBS are the be all and the end of Black media? Nope. What gate does he keep?
The internet has put other MORE intelligent people of color (like 95% of regular blog posters here) in touch with issues facing Black America in more timely, politically critical, intellectually rigorous, and socially sophisticated ways. The envelope gets pushed HERE, not on NPR and NOT with Tavis Smiley.
I'm glad he has a show and I'm glad he adds to the numerous voices out there banging the drum the he bangs. His arrogance is palpable and evident in what he chooses to criticize. My issue was and is his lens when describing Barrack Obama and race. He asserted a politicization that speaks to his lack of knowledge and sophistication on race matters and most people in the United States. If he said it louder I might of thought it was Sean Hannity. He is a punk that has YET to recognize that intellectually Obama is the pro and he is playing triple A ball.
Do me a favor- let's not AGAIN confuse what the Republican party WAS thinking that it has anything in common with what we see TODAY. Yes, I know... MLK was a Republican. Guess what? I have a TV and I get the paper- it ain't the same party.
Look, I call myself a progressive, and the sea change against Tavis came as a result of his sucking up to Hillary Clinton and not accepting Michelle Obama as a substitute for his yearly conference and show on the state of Black America.
Thereafter, any statements he's made has come across as off-putting and whiny because Obama didn't deign to kiss his pinky ring. Whether this had to do with Obama trying to skirt black issues trying to be universal or not, it just appeared to me that Tavis was taking Obama's non-appearance as a snub.
I've got plenty to criticize Obama about right now, from Rev. Warren to Larry Summers, but I want to see how he does first before gloves are completely off. And yeah, people need to lean on Obama when we feel you wrong, brother. You wrong.
TruthSeeker
That's how Tavis sees things..
And how he sees things is a function of his psychology and all his experiences.
Who the hell is dating Tavis, by the way???
What poor woman has to endure yet another stuttering orgasm?

Thanks so much for the detailed response, Evita, it's much appreciated. Being an immigrant myself (from North Africa), I've followed African American issues and personalities as best as could, but I don't get all the dynamics.
It's good to be able to hear from this group. I've admired Tavis' efforts over the years with his yearly State of the Black Union, which is how I discovered him, a few years back, on c-span. I then tried to listen to his NPR show and watch his PBS show, but those really didn't grab me.
Now - since Barack's emergence - I see him a lot on MTP and other networks, offering some twisted "Black" (I guess?) counterpoint to the enthusiasm Barack's election is generating. To me, he comes across as disingenuous, motivated by something other than the good of the country or the people. It seems overly self-serving, is what I am saying. A tool.

Tavis is a hater. He continues to be one. He's trying to keep his relevance.

I love the honesty of kids:
Meanwhile, Obama admitted yesterday that he’ll be under a lot of pressure to deliver a boffo inaugural address - from his girls. Obama recounted to CNN last night a recent trip to the Lincoln Memorial with his wife and kids, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7. The future First Family was reading Lincoln’s second inaugural address, inscribed on the wall, when “Sasha looks up, and she says, ‘Boy, that’s a long speech. Do you have to give one of those?’” Obama said.
“I said, ‘Actually, that one’s pretty short. Mine may even be a little longer.’ At which point, then Malia turns to me and says, ‘First African-American President. Better be good,’” he said.
"Blackwell: GOP Must Defeat Job-Creating Stimulus Because It Will Ruin GOP’s Election Chances»
In an article published on Townhall today, RNC Chairman candidate and former Ohio governor Secretary of State Ken Blackwell urges congressional conservatives to oppose the reinvestment and recovery stimulus plan promoted by President-elect Obama. Though he offers standard conservative arguments against the plan — including a screed against the growth of “big government” — Blackwell seemed most concerned about the political benefit Democrats might see from successfully boosting the economy.
He warned that the bill, which calls for 80 percent job creation in the private sector, could create 600,000 new federal jobs — a problem because it would make it that much harder for for Republicans to win back Virginia:
While only a few details are known, one overlooked issue is that it could create a major electoral advantage for Democrats at taxpayer expense. That would be unacceptable for what is being touted as a nonpartisan measure, and gives Republicans yet another reason to oppose it if not restructured. […]
But most federal employees, that are not political appointees, vote Democrat. Since Washington, DC is the seat of government, whenever new federal bureaucrats are created many live in Maryland and Virginia. In 2008, Virginia went Democrat for the first time since 1964, and Mr. Obama won it by 130,000 votes. Creating 600,000 new jobs might help cement Virginia in the Democrat column, making it harder for Republicans to retake the White House.
Blackwell cites House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) as his source for the 600,000 “bureaucrats” figure. In fact, Obama’s council of economic advisers predicts that the plan would create about 240,000 government jobs, compared to, for example, 700,000 in mining and construction. And of course, there’s no reason to assume the bulk of government jobs would be created in the D.C. area, though the District — which has the 6th highest unemployment rate in the nation — could use the new jobs.
The bottom line is that, in an economy that lost 1.2 million jobs last year, Blackwell’s biggest concern is to block the creation of new jobs because those newly-employed Americans might vote Democratic."

Good Morning,
Thanks Rikyrah!
Listening to Mahalia Jackson brings back some very good memories. My parents loved Mahalia Jackson. "In The Upper Room" was one of their favorites!
Val
That is my favorite. I love "in the Upper Room". I love the older gospel. The newer stuff doesn't grab my spirit for some reason.
On Tweety's program yesterday, he had a segment on the social aspect of Washingtonian society, and one of the guest said something I truly believe can be achieved with the Obama's in the White House. She basically said that there were 2 social societies in Washington: Black Washington & White Washington, and that the Obamas can/will hopefully try to bring the gap between the 2 divides.
I actually think that this is probably true. From what we've seen, the Obama's unlike the Bushes are social people. They like to go out into their neighborhood and socialize. Bush and Laura never seemed to leave the White House and venture into the neighborhood. When they left the White House it was to go to Crawford, or Camp David. I bet it never occured to him to even visit a local establishment. Now I know it was probably because of security concerns, but still it's not like they had to go out everyday, but damn did they go out at all in 8 years? I can't remember any.
Anyway, even though I know it will probably drive the Secret Service bonkers, I still like the idea of the Obamas really being a part of the D.C. neighborhood
Town
DC is like 80% black. I doubt seriously Curious George and Laura wanted to socialize with any black person not named Condoleezza Rice. Barbara Bush Sr. is probably catching the vapors with Jenna living in Baltimore.
The article touched on some real truths about the game rules changing. Blacks are a versatile, multidimentional, adaptable people. If Whites want to be included they think they need to hook up with Blacks to be socially accepted.
It'll be facinating to watch how they manuever themselves in social circles. Generally, Whites don't feel comfortable in settings where they're not the majority.
lamh31
that was a very interesting article.

Disabled, Blind People to Lose Disability Payments
California's fiscal future lurched yet another step toward oblivion on Friday as state Controller John Chiang announced he could no longer make payments for services to disabled and blind people who need the money to pay for rent and food. Chiang said payments would most likely have to be stopped by Feb. 1. "Delaying these payments will hurt real families," Chiang said.
About one million people would be affected by the non-payments, Chiang said. "People are going to be hungry at my house," said Shirley Magers, who receives a $900 monthly payment related to her disabilities. "(This is) not to mention the utilities. Personally I can't pay all the utilities right now." Education will be spared from the delayed payments, but California's money meltdown has been long in the making. "The last day the state had a positive cash balance was July 12, 2007 -- a year and a half ago," Chiang said.
Since that time, California has been using internal borrowing to pay the bills. Barring a quick deal at the capitol, taxpayers will likely receive IOUs instead of tax refunds this spring. Lawmakers have about two weeks to strike a deal with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger or the cash crisis will expand to even more people. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28709883/
