When President-elect Barack Obama was getting made up for his interview for ABC’s “This Week” at the Newseum, his daughters Malia and Sasha were playing producer and director in the control room.
At one point, they even got to talk into host George Stephanopoulos’ ear.
Stephanopoulos says they suggested a question: “What kind of a dog are we getting and when are we getting it?”
On Election Night, Obama said: “Sasha and Malia, I love you both more than you can imagine. You have earned the puppy that is coming with us."
The president-elect told Stephanopoulos: “They seem to have narrowed it down to a Labradoodle or a Portuguese water hound.”
“A medium-sized,” the anchor observed.
“Medium-sized dog, and so, we’re now going to start looking at shelters to see when one of those dogs might come up,” Obama replied. “We’re closing in on it. This has been tougher than finding a commerce secretary.”

Yet another White male given his own show on CNN. When's Roland Martin gonna get is due? Hell, I'd even prefer Jeff Tobin.
WASHINGTON (CNN) – CNN announced Wednesday that its revamped Sunday public affairs show is titled “State of the Union with John King.”
The new program, hosted by CNN Chief National Correspondent John King, will air every Sunday from 9 a.m. through 1 p.m.
The show will launch January 18 the weekend before President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration. The first show will preview the January 20 inauguration, and examine the upcoming Obama administration.
Roland Martin couldn't even get a CHAIR during the election season, so don't EVEN be looking for a show for him.

Im upset. Upset and disappointed. The Presidential election was amazing because it blew open the door for intelligent political discussion. People of all colors, religion, sexuality, region, etc. were being heard.
So I was really looking forward to the 2009 speakers series. http://www.speakerseries2009.com/ I was really hyphed when I heard that Ann Coulter & Bill Maher would be conversing one-on-one at every stop in the series. That's gonna be pure entertainment no matter what your thoughts of these two are. And now Im upset for 2 reasons. 1. There is only 1 AA in the speakers series. 2. That lone AA speaker is D.L. Hughley My first thought when I saw this was WTF?!?! I could easily name 10 AA's better suited for this forum than DLH. I am happy that he wont be in the Chicago series because I surely wouldve been arrested for throwing tomatos.
whiterosebuddy
DL Hughley must be on the DL gay! that is the only thing that explains his prominence on CNN
"George Stephanopoulos asked about the dog on ABC's "This Week," saying he was passing along a question from Barack Obama's daughters sitting in the control room: "What kind of a dog are we getting and when are we getting it?"
"While you were getting made up," Stephanopoulos told Obama, "they went into the control room and played director and producer. And they actually gave me a question they want me to ask you. You know exactly what it's going to be."
"They seem to have narrowed it down to a labradoodle or a Portuguese water hound ... medium-sized dog, and so, we're now going to start looking at shelters to see when one of those dogs might come up."
"So, you're closing in on it?" Stephanopoulos asked.
"We're closing in on it. This has been tougher than finding a commerce secretary," the President-elect said. "
I don't know how many of you watch Greek on ABC Family. It features two african-american actors, Amber Stevens and Paul James as members of the traditional white Greek system. Paul has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award for role as a gay character on the show. I've never seen a more open, realistic portrayal of a gay teenager/man that is in no way a characture on a TV series. I hope he wins.
OMG..the panel of Waters Fenty Pouisant and Cosby was absolutely PATHETIC.
I have never watched such a nonsubstantive panel on MTP or any other political show. Unbelieveable...no one made any comment of significance...I kept watchin hopin it would get better, it didn't.
Please save me from more panels of this ilk...bring on some scholars. Fenty talks like he never in his entire life opened a textbook] Waters had nothing to say that was not geared to votes. Pouissant may have had something to say but he never got the chance. Cosby, was Cosby...shallow but wel intended.
I can't begin to tell you how unimportant this was...a complete waste of the time I spent viewing it.
UGH!!!

Same ole, same ole.......oh well.....Now I just look at the red-carpet pre-awards shows or wait for somebody to send me the chain email of the pics so I can see the gowns.

It's all about the gowns. I can't wait to see Michelle's Inaugural Ball gown!
The clip is from Say Amen, Somebody. I remember it very well, because I saw it at the Castro Theatre (in the heart of the gay community in San Francisco) in 1982. The place was packed to the rafters. The singing was just beautiful. I think I wasn't the only one in tears. Dorsey died some 10 years later; this was like his swan song.
It's on DVD, but Amazon only has used copies, it appears.

Much criticism has come to Michelle Obama for her stated goal of being mother to her children first as she becomes First Lady of the United States. While this situation is not analogous it is a potent reminder that for many feminism has become a political "ism" as opposed to a way of making you way in the world period: http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_sty...

In PE Obama's latest discussion on the economy, he deliberately spoke to education and It's need to provide and education so our graduates could compete w those of Beijing for the high tech jobs of the future. I's like to start a discussion about exactly what that means because to often it means this: http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/te...
This is really important as coming from an urban high school were I had an opportunity to learn Fortran much of the discussion was how to train the students in keypunch as they were the "jobs" of the future. I fear now even that is what this educational intiative will become if left to expediency.
Miranda
I cant imagine that the high tech jobs that PEO alludes too, in any way encompasses the types of jobs in that article.

Chris Matthews Show discussing The Atlantic article,"The End of White America."
Miranda
Dang, I missed it. What was said?
spirit_55z
Miranda, the article was posted earlier last week Here's the link again if you didn't get to read it yet.
Chris mentioned the Atlantic article and showed a pic of the diverse crowd in Grant Park on eletion night. (visuals to illustrate the point of the article)
Clarence Page commented on the reality of the face of America and the screen showed us a cover of Time Magazine with a multi racial face.
Nora O'Donnell- crickets..... made ome stupid, predictable comment about PEO having cross over appel and some Post-racial nonsense.
Kathleen Parker, made some comment about how she uses baby oil...... ( I guess I had a blonde moment on that one.)
Reham Salam said America's diversity is what it is, and if folks don't like it.......
Tweety, was like oh... ah....Ok. Cut to commercial! LOL!
Miranda
"baby oil"??.............LOL!!!
Thanks for the summary! I read the article so I can only guess it was a pretty lively conversation. Kathleen Parker being a conservative commentator, I cant even begin to wonder what she was talking about when she bought up baby oil.....LMAO
spirit_55z
I'm lookin for a repeat or video clip of this show. I want to get that baby oil deal. LOL!
Was'nt Kathleen Parker the chick who got booted off McCain's plane for dissing 'Sno Ho?
whiterosebuddy
O I get the baby oil deal. It is so you can become a crispy brown critter when sun bathing.
I think this was an excellent article and it definitely was a new perspective this cultural identity struggle. I found these excerpts very intriguing:
At its best, Lander’s site—which formed the basis for a recently published book of the same name (reviewed in the October 2008 Atlantic)—is a cunningly precise distillation of the identity crisis plaguing well-meaning, well-off white kids in a post-white world...snip …Lander’s “white people” are products of a very specific historical moment, raised by well-meaning Baby Boomers to reject the old ideal of white American gentility and to embrace diversity and fluidity instead. (“It’s strange that we are the kids of Baby Boomers, right? How the hell do you rebel against that? Like, your parents will march against the World Trade Organization next to you. They’ll have bigger white dreadlocks than you. What do you do?”)… suggests that the multicultural harmony they were raised to worship has bred a kind of self-denial...snip
The classic thing white students say when you ask them to talk about who they are is, ‘I don’t have a culture.’ They might be privileged, they might be loaded socioeconomically, but they feel bankrupt when it comes to culture … They feel disadvantaged, and they feel marginalized. They don’t have a culture that’s cool or oppositional.” Wray says that this feeling of being culturally bereft often prevents students from recognizing what it means to be a child of privilege—a strange irony that the first wave of whiteness-studies scholars, in the 1990s, failed to anticipate.
Wow. Just wow. Will take me awhile to process these concepts as a 'real' struggle that is genuine.
spirit_55z
Yes, a powerful and well written article.
Oh, the IRONY:
The classic thing white students say when you ask them to talk about who they are is, ‘I don’t have a culture.’ They might be privileged, they might be loaded socioeconomically, but they feel bankrupt when it comes to culture ....
My take is if you grew up in a culture (White) that pilaged, borrowed and stolen from and laid claim to another'sculture, is it any wonder they feel bankrupt, disadvantanged and marginalized.
I 'd be confused to if I came to the realization that the only thing I really had to base my privilege on was my WHITENESS!
whiterosebuddy
Yes but Spirit...this is a profound shift. I have black childern of this generation..and so what this article had to say about Puffy was an eye opener.
It is like we are moving at Warp speed. I did not prepare my children for what they are saying or what these white kids are feeling. That puts an entirely diffeerent spin on what they are dealing with!!
We need an entire thread dedicated to this shift..It is profound in terms of what our children are encountering.
spirit_55z
There's definitely a shift. Can you elaborate more on how you plan to prepare your children? How old are they?
whiterosebuddy
They are adults..in their mid twenties/ I did not prepare them to be cultural trailblazers.
Only trailblazing acheivers.

Yep! She be the one! LOL

It's getting harder and harder to choose on Sunday morning. I'm watching MTP. David G. is actually likable today as he and his panel, including Bill Cosby, Maxine Waters, Arvin Poussaint and Adrian Fenty discussed the impact of Obama Presidency on blacks.
On of the many ABC channels on Comcast is replaying This Week so I can watch Obama and I'm DVRing Chris Matthews.
spirit_55z
I either record MTP or watch it later. It usually comes on at least twice in our region. I'm ooking forward to watching this installment.
I wonder if Mayor Fenty's kids attend DC public schools yet.
No, they don't, and he had a lot of audacity in suggesting the Obamas send their kids to DC Unified when his own kids will probably be Sasha's and Malia's classmates at Sidwell.

How the hell does he go to a chili place and just order water?
You go there to GET YOUR GRUB on in MAJOR fashion. Come any Saturday nite there's a damn line outside the door to GET IN.

No, he did not. Town, you are lying.

Obama ordered the half-smoke (?), some fries and a sweet tea.
Fenty just ordered water. He could have at least ordered some fries and pushed them around his plate. He could have even ordered a sweet tea like Obama and taken some occassional sips.
Water? Come on, man.
rikyrah
What, did he think he put cooties in the Chili?
Town,

Who the hell turns down SWEET TEA, if nothing else.
Chili cheese fries with extra sour cream on top.

Fenty irks me. ...there, I said it.
whiterosebuddy
Yes, he did. It was that typical crabs in a barrel mentality. Where however you were hazed or put on 'notice' you seek to do to others.
Instead of embracing the diversity of the black experience. Why do folks perpetuate this stupidity?
Why hate on folks when you yourself know how awful it was to be hated on about something like this. Why can't we embrace ALL that we?
spirit_55z
Yes, I know. rikyah had asked about the school status of his kids a few months ago.
Wills is okay with POC, Harry has always HAD issues.
I can't help but think if Diana were alive, she'd be all over Harry for that shyt. Oh, well, at least Charles gave them an upbringing different than the cold one he got, but I'm willing to bet Harry's getting that nonsense from his grandfather, Prince Philip, who was a known bigot but kept it behind the walls of Buckingham Palace.
Town
I agree, if Diana were still alive she would have put her foot up Harry's ass the FIRST time he dipped in the well of insensitivity (wearing the Nazi uniform). But what can we expect when the British Royal Family were Nazi sympathizers and it's said that Prince Philip is a racist as well?
Miranda
Harry is WILD.....his azz is straight up outta control, we probably dont know half of what Harry does.
After I watched footage of Prince William cleaning out what looked to be outhouses in some really poor part of this Earth, I had to stand and bow to him because Lord knows, what I saw...I aint gonna lie, I would have been violently ill just from what LOOKED like the stench.
Co-sign about Philip. And yeah, I heard that Harry missed his mom more and had a harder time coping after her death. But to fill him up with this shyt? But this was the answer, to fill him up with this shyt?
I saw the film. He was trying to make jokes. It isn't funny. Not then. Not anywhere/time else.
The uncle of the young Pakistani soldier weighed in:
Iftikhar Raja said his nephew, now a captain in the Pakistani army, would have risen above such terms and had not mentioned the incident to his family.
Mr Raja said: "At no time he told us that he was called Paki or he was a good friend of Prince Harry, I mean, although they served together that is true.
"But I myself am a British subject, I am proud to be British and if someone called me Pakistani I would be proud to be called that, but Paki is definitely a derogatory remark."
He added: "We expect better from our Royal Family on whom we spend millions and millions of pounds for training and schooling."
Not only Philip was like that, but great-grandmother the Queen Mum was like that, too. Bigots. Don't even think that she was some kind of nice, harmless old lady. For her, getting to 102 years old was by stepping over some dead bodies.
That movie "The Queen" put all the Royals' dirty laundry in the street. Prince Philip really hated Diana after she divorced Charles, but Queen Elizabeth had to keep reminding him to tone down his hatred of Diana because of their grandsons, and she had to keep reminding the old bastard their grandsons loved their mother regardless of what they thought.
Charles had to go behind their backs to Tony Blair to pressure the Queen into giving the Royal funeral Diana eventually got. And yeah, the Queen Mum was a bigot as well - which horrified Elizabeth's father - and that was another secret kept well behind the walls of the Palace.
You should have seen my Oxford instructor's face when I asked in a sidebar conversation if it were true about them being bigots, and he replied that Philip had a whole lot of nerve to even be saying any shyt, seeing as he was Greek and had to be dispatched to marry into the Royal family because his people were broke as jokes. They had titles and no closer related male heirs in the royal linage to marry off Elizabeth to, so Philip got in and they had to create a title for his ass.
How quickly he forgot his ass would still be a broke ass if he weren't married to the Queen.
Philip wasn't Greek Greek, like Aristotle Onassis.
He was German and Danish. Europeans like Belgians and Greeks were forever trying to get some 'pure' royal blood to rule over them when they became independent in the 19th century--they couldn't get one of their own to rule--so they got Germans from Hesse or Schleswig Holstein or something. And yeah, he had a real broke ass and hard life (for a royal) until his uncle Lord Mountbatten (renamed from Battenberg) shoved him in the Royal Family's face.
He and Elizabeth are actually cousins, their common ancestor being Queen Victoria. Man, all that inbreeding. (Chuck and Di were also cousins, although her bloodline came from the bastard side of the family, and proved was far more royal than his own.)
A couple of his sisters and several of his cousins couldn't show their faces in Britain at the time of his marriage because they had been or married minor royals who became Nazis during the war. It was like that for several decades, that's how bad the feeling was against Nazis or Germans.
And yet, they snuck one into the Royal Family undercover, where he's free to pass on the bigoted shyt he learned to his grandsons. One of them was listening; I'm glad it wasn't Wills, who has also been known to put his foot up Harry's ass for shyt like this.
The Queen Mother didn't live to be 102 without something to give her that "gumption".
Stepping over dead bodies and bigotry would have done it. Look at Strom Thurmond's decrepit ass - he lived to be triple digits as well, all the time hiding that Black daughter of his who looked so much like him, Essie Mae looked like he spit her out.

Obama is soooo good. He is a consumate politician. I just loved how when Georg was pressing him on National Security, he said, this is an area that McCain and I agreed on even during the campaign. That's what you call being a President of all the people.
Now, I am familiar, somewhat with the first dog he mentioned a Labradoodle, what was the name of the other one? I just smiled when I realized he was not getting one of those ;wussie' dogs...as he told BarbaraWaWa....it is a medium size dog...lol
So, how many shelters do you think are calling the WH this morning offering a dog? hahahaha
spirit_55z
Yes, PE-O held it down. Finding an area of mutual agreement and building on it, now that's a novel idea!
It's a new game for these tv news jounalist reporters. They might want to take few notes on how to do their job. I'm not up on the dog selection process.
whiterosebuddy
Yes, it was clear GeorgiePorgie was not sure how to pivot from that question. It is really sad that these interviews are so often 'gotcha' focused to polarize very serious issues that we need to solve.
Obama refocuses them each time to make the convo into a productive discussion with areas to build on. He concentrates on solutions not inflamming situations and carving out an intractable win/lose dynamic...he seeks win/win...where do we agree and how can we build on that.
This is such a novel idea to most of those who have built their political careers in the last 20 years simply fightin and bickering without ever having to be accountable to actual DO anything.
Obama is changing that paradigm..he wants to be transformational. I also beleive that is why Lincoln is so inspirational to him...Obama looks at Lincoln's north/south polarization as analogous to today's redstate/bluestate for him.
Y'all forget, Georgie's an ex-Clintonista, and probably biased in his coverage of the President-Elect, because if that had been Hillary, it would have been nothing short of an open love-fest.
whiterosebuddy
O I have not forgot...georgie...he will be forever know to me as STEPINFETCHINOpoulous..after that horrid debate questioning.
I have to use that name when referring to Georgie, now.

Chicago music and the soul of a president Barack Obama loves Chicago music, and it shows: In his speeches, he echoes the ideals — hope, tolerance, determination — heard in the songs of such local greats as Sam Cooke, the Staple Singers and Curtis Mayfield Also President Obama is a Househead.LOL http://www.suntimes.com/entertainment/music/137...

That Sam Cooke comparison is SPOT ON.......PEO definitely has the same swag.

Which would you prefer to be right?
How long have you hated your white teacher
Who told you to love your black preacher? While Cooke had a kaleidoscopic following, Jerry Butler’s favorite message song is “Choice of Colors,” released by Mayfield in 1969.
“In substance and in terms of the condition of the people, ‘Choice of Colors’ was head and shoulders above a lot of the songs,” Butler said. “ ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ was so poignant and prophetic.”
Butler then sang the opening verse of “Choice of Colors”:
If you had a choice of color, which one would you choose, my brothers?
