Exactly ... Franken has won, in fact Coleman is reversing his legal stance on excluding absentee ballots. Coleman should be happy he is not going to end up expelled from the senate (he maybe indicted shortly over a contributer's payment to his wife for 75k).

Burris is about "good governance," and dems avoiding being tarred and feathered or "lynched" /snark by the public backlash about Blago's idiocy.

About the ' unelectability' of Jesse Jackson, Jr.

I was reading on OpenLeft, and someone brought up a fabulous point about the ' electability' of Jesse Jackson, Jr. They backed Harold Ford, Jr., and damn near everyone in his family had been arrested, indicted or convicted. But, they supported his DLC behind.

Jesse Jackson only has his father, who, by my account, had never been arrested (on anything other civil rights issues). His brothers are solid businessmen. His sisters have led quiet private lives.

Quiet as it's been kept, Jesse Jackson, Jr. has shown a strong independent streak beginning with his quest for his Congressional Seat. There have been some moves by him that I have questioned over the years, but he's been willing to take risks on candidates that were NOT machine-approved. Some won, some lost, but he still was willing to do it. And, he's been building bridges and reaching out to other communities from the moment he entered Congress.

I'm not buying the 'electability' argument. In fact, I believe it's just the opposite. They were afraid of him WINNING the seat in 2010. And once he did that, it would be hard to get him out, unless HE wanted to leave it.

Just call me a tinfoil hat wearer.

This situation is exposing the cancerous tumor that needs to be removed from the Democratic Party -- The DLC.

The DLC has a place within the DNC -- they just need to be called out and marginalized when DLCers try to marginalize more liberal or progressive dems from the leadership positions DLC-friendly people like Reid have currently.

I think what scares Reid is the fact of Jackson's name, and his progressive politics.

The son, however, is not the father.

Jesse Sr. has not been arrested, that is true. But how he got his money, his past utterances, his womanizing, his tendency to grandstand and the perception of him (as well as Sharpton) as an ambulance chaser--these attributes seem to outweigh the fact that he is the first mainsteam black man ever to run for president on the Democratic ticket, that he has cachet both nationally and internationally, that he has a weekly radio show listened to by thousands, that he is a great speaker who connects across colors and races, and that he is a progressive.

Reid's fears are not unfounded. He doesn't want a potential 'rabble rouser' in the Senate. He wants someone to be quiet and to take orders, no matter how odious.

And me, I don't agree with fear.

That's commendable.

Republicans love fear though, and it works.

So, on some level democratic leadership should take negatives into account (even if you personally disagree with their assessment).

Now THIS argument I like on the surface, I second the thought that you should develop into a post about chi-politics specifically Rikyrah.

Harold Ford is a DLCer, and absolutely no threat to the dominant power structure within the DLC wing of the DNC. Remember all these CBCers lined-up to support HRC, b/c they saw doing that would achieve some of their own goals.

"Electability" is b.s. I think electability is something the "old-guard" power-structure uses to try deny challengers.

it is not tin-foil hat time at all. It's about supplanting the existing dominant paradigm within the DNC rank-and-file.

The difference between Ford and Jackson is that one is a DLCer and the other is a true progressive. Ford is a great schmoozer. Those who live in the beltway bubble love him. Even after losing the senate race you had fools like James Carville promoting Ford as Dean's replacement as DNC chairman even after the dems won in a landslide. Jackson will have to do what Obama did. Go visit downstate and meet with the people.

That is a salient point Rikyrah. Sounds like it would be worthy of its own post because I think you are absolutely right - they were afraid of Jesse Jr. WINNING and having the seat for as long as he wanted.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was forced to defend his support for African-American politicians in a testy exchange with David Gregory on "Meet the Press" Sunday.

In a discussion of Senate appointee Roland Burris, Gregory repeated a claim of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich that the Nevada Senator had opposed three other black potential replaces for President-elect Barack Obama. "He's making it up," Reid said.

Gregory went on to say that people close to Burris were suggesting that "Reid doesn't want an African-American to succeed Obama." Reid gave a lengthy and impassioned defense of his history of promoting black Senate politicians. Anyone accusing him of racism, he concluded, is "part of the Blagojevich spin." Watch:

And finally, an on-the-record response to the Chicago Sun-Times story (see below) from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who accuses Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich of "distorting" their conversation in leaks to the media.

"Gov. Blagojevich appears to be trying to distract attention from his daunting legal problems and damaged credibility by distorting information about private phone calls between himself and other public officials," Reid said in the statement. "It is regrettable and reprehensible.

"Gov. Blagojevich’s efforts to try to tarnish others while the cloud of suspicion continues to grow over him are shameful, as are his efforts to further betray the public trust and sow seeds of division. Whycome every time someone gets caught with their bigoted slips hanging, they always have to "defend" themselves against the accusations. That's just like hearing:

I agree Pie3. In one of the transcripts, Blago said that Obama didn't want JJJ. They had folks, including me, scratching their heads because JJJ was a BIG PEO supporter during the primary and the general. Come to find out, JJJ was on Obama's list.

His goatee will always hold a place in my heart, but he's not exactly a paragon of virtue. There's a reason why both Kerry and Obama gave him the once over for Veep but ultimately he remained in the on deck circle. He's already got prior baggage. This was just the latest brick in the wall.

I thought you'd be interested in a new analysis of the Obama victory written by independent strategist Jacqueline Salit called "HOW THE INDEPENDENT MOVEMENT WENT LEFT BY GOING RIGHT: Her analysis makes the case that for the first time in American history, independents determined the outcome of the major party primaries and the independent vote was critically decisive for Obama’s November win. She tells the story of how the independent movement has gained a new, more powerful position in the political landscape and, in the process, shifted left-of-center.

* Obama polled 52% of the independent vote as compared with McCain's 44%, strong evidence that independents have become more center-left than center right.

* 6% of the overall electorate were independents of color -- African American, Latino, Asian American and Native American. Seventy percent of those voters chose Barack Obama.

* In the 33 states that held open primaries or caucuses, 65% of independents chose to vote in the Democratic contests.

* Though the Clinton machine was promoting her inevitability (“It’s her time”), South Carolina primary voters overwhelmingly chose Obama with 78% of the black vote and a plurality (42%) of the independent vote.

Thanks for the link, I am about to read it now. I just had to point out that regardless of the subjects, Annie Leibovitz, is an amazing photographer. The photo of the Bush gang is no exception. You can almost see the power struggles, conceit, defeat, disrespect and arrogance within the group in one shot.

I love Annie Leibovitz' work - she stands alone.

was watching a documentary series on the British Royal family, and it was so interesting watching the part about when Leibovitz came to photograph her in advance of her visit to the U.S.

I saw that documentary too - it was interesting. Some of her works were display n museums across the country last year. They were in Atlanta at the High during late summer of 2007.

Reid, McConnell to Meet on Burris Appointment

Just saw Reid on MTP.

All I can say is, I want to read the transcript of what Reid said EXACTLY to Blago about black appointees or hear an untouched excerpt. He's claiming that his words were twisted and that this story is nothing but push back filtering out of the Blago/Burris camp.

When asked whether he would allow Burris to be seated, Reid sputtered that he and Dick Durbin tomorrow would talk to Burris.

Monday is going to be really interesting.

If Reid even got caught on audio saying the N word, or code words or phrases like "those kinds of people," I wanna know besides people talking and writing about it. I mean, I just wanna know...what IS the motivation besides race? Obama is now eminent, and more than capable...just what is the deal? What was going to upset the fruit basket by having JJJr., Obama's mentor or Danny (ugh!) Davis take the seat? You have three black guys who are nominal Dems but are conservative to progressive.

I certainly understand your point. Nobody wants to hear the "I've got Black friends" defense when someone is accused of racism--(a la Bill Clinton), but doesn't he have a point as well? If he is accused of being set against having Black people in the Senate--or by extension, public office, shouldn't he be able to rebut that by saying, actually, no, I have worked to get Blacks into the Senate and public office by doing x, y, and z so arguments to the contrary are untrue.

Look, Reid could turn out to be a flaming racist, but as of right now...there is no there, there. Everything just seems to be coincidental and I find it disturbing that people are willing to take the word of a corrupt, race baiting governor over Reid just because they think that he is a weak leader. I don't think that is fair.

Even if he did say, you know what, I don't think these three candidates can win statewide office, so what? He does have a point--though it may be based on flawed logic. Why does that automatically equal racism?

I agree to an extent. When people were asking Bill Clinton what was going on with his comments comparing Jesse Jackson and Obama, and his defense was, well, my office in in Harlem and my initiative has given aid to Africa, all I could do was hang my head. One did not have anything to do with the other. There was no plausible explanation for the JJ comparison--in my mind--and his race-based defense undermined his credibility.

But here, Reid's defense is at least relevant to what he has been accused of--blocking or trying to block Black people from the Senate (or public office), which is why I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. But like I said, I could be wrong.

I just feel uncomfortable with the growing mob against Reid that is based on, as of right now, sheer speculation and the word of a self-serving governor trying to save his own skin.

I was reading another blog (based on the opinion by a former Blago-ite) and they were saying that this whole Burris affair is meant for the impeachment hearing. Blago needs 19 votes from state senators to survive impeachment, and 9 of the state senators are black. Just food for thought as the motivation behind Blago's moves.

Look, I am not "mobbing" Reid, but both of these guys, Blago and Reid, look soooo suspect that those recordings of Reid's phone calls to
Blago need to be transcribed and released. I don't trust either of them.

Bill Clinton's false analogies not withstanding, Reid does not help himself proving how liberal he is like some guy showing off all of his credit cards before he pays for his meal. Either he is sweating this whole thing, or he doesn't know how to talk to people about people. Namely, blacks and people of color don't even want to be referred to in this manner at this late stage of the game.

I do so agree that Blago is still creating a distraction with Burris regarding his upcoming impeachment. And I hope those 9 brothers can see some sense.

If you are not "mobbing" Reid okay , but I do get a sense on this blog and others that with just a couple of news stories, all of a sudden Reid is the devil himself--and I have a feeling that many are not willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because he is a weak leader. I dunno; I think you're reading much too much into what I am writing, which is some cases is putting stuff out there thinking out loud.

Like I said before, Blago has thown a monkey wrench in all this, and the reason why Richardson has been thrown under the bus (according to Mrs. Alan Greenspan tonight on NBC News) is that that shyt back home in New Mexico is getting too hot to handle, and that Obama couldn't take two effing problems at the same time. He said he wanted his Cabinet to be relatively clean. To be clean is to inspire confidence that you ain't gonna screw people around. That's what Blago has done in previous shady stuff, and this is what he is trying to do with Burris, generate a smoke screen and getting black folks excited that no one wants to seat a black man or woman in Obama's hallowed seat.

I want to see the breadth and width of Reid's contribution to this mess. But then again, outside of an outright death threat, Blago could have sloughed off any cajoling he was getting from anybody. He could have kept it clean by not expecting some kind of beneficence or post in exchange, and talking shyt for the recording devices that he half-knew were there. It was his decision and he decided to play games, like (paraphasing Edna Ferber) he was some petty Chicago Nero.

There are ways, and there are ways in which people can say, I helped so and so get a leg up at this agency or that office. But it seemed kinda tired, at least to me. And ingenuous.

My late dad (I have had two) in his position of high bureaucracy, helped a few white guys get some jobs when they were fired after decades at their companies. A few of these guys he didn't know from Adam, but he made inquiries and helped these men continue to be breadwinners for their families in low to middle management positions when he was supposed to be insuring that blacks and people of color get a fair deal.

He didn't go broadcasting about it, either. And he didn't have to do it, but he did it out of loyalty for friends or underlings. And when he told me about it, there was no crowing, no "look at these mofos now," it was no "look what I did for these so and sos," it was just a quiet acknowledgment that he was responsible for a lot of stuff that he hadn't expected to assume...

Like I said, Reid may not know how to talk about people, especially under the withering examination of David Gregory of MTP. He stuttered and stumbled and he was fearful. A guy who has nothing to lose or has no guilt doesn't act in this way.

I'm afraid that I am repeating myself, so I will say no more about it for now.

well in all fairness the last 8 years we've had swiftness in everything. i dont think their failure was in not acting fast enough i think it was not acting wisely. They shouldve just had a special election. Reid is just like other democratic officials under-estimating black candidates. why would jackson lose? illinois elected the only black senator in barack, why wouldnt jj or burris or davis be able to win?

See that is the problem with doing appointments is that it shuts out real talent. The democratic process is the best way to deal with this.

JJjr. is "hurt" by his father. Burris and Davis are hurt by their age, and Burris by being a loser and having statements like "a bunch of unqualified white boys" as to why he lost the gov. race on the record...

Of the three I think JJjr. has the strongest position. However, JJjr. is a lot like Clinton -- unfairly he is getting tarred by people's feelings about a family member.

However, who said politics is about fairness or justice?

That's what Reid thinks.

Reid is not the arbiter in this case. He can only suggest or offer. For him to threaten is another thing entirely.

Let me say this, too. Reid is a Mormon.

Reid is a Mormon? What do you mean by that exactly? LDS stopped their de jure discrimination on black males entering their "priesthood" status in their theocratic structure in the 1970s.

Back it up, otherwise it seems like a non-sequitor.

That change was in 1976.

I was thinking about mindset more than just religion. Reid was a convert to Mormonism when he was in college, in the Fifties, long before their prophet had his revelation.

There are still those Mormons who may not recognize in word and deed what happened in 1976, just like there are those Mormons who broke off from the church and continued to adhere to plural marriage.

Ok... well that seems an awful lot like prejudice to me.

What some "mormons" may believe has nothing to do with what Reid may or may not believe and is not good evidence, it's just prejudice.

I dont' mean to pick your statement appart -- it is just it seems people jump to "racism" and "double standards" and "prejudice" an awful lot to describe the fate of black in politics -- but then do EXACTLY the same thing in reference to others.

First let me correct myself, it was in 1978 that the revelation occurred concerning black men being admitted to the priesthood and full humanity restored to black Mormon families.

Second, in regards to the difference in faith and practice....it may not be provable what Reid actually believes about his faith and how he puts into practice its revelations. However, the few blacks in a place like Nevada, its Western settler culture, how individuals saw blacks living there, his social upbringing, as well as the strictures of Mormonismbefore 1978--all this contributes to how someone views the world and how he responds to other people in it. That's proof enough for me. It's frankly relative whether Reid is good or not or in between.

Note too that I never concluded that Reid was racist or that he was practicing a double standard or even that he was prejudiced. I do think, though, that compared to someone like Howard Dean, it appears that he doesn't walk it like he talks it as consistently.

So, we can extend that and say -- JJjr. needs to explicitly "disprove" every statement and position his father makes and has made, b/c his father contributes to JJjr's moral, social, ethical and educational foundation?

So, to many whites this can be "That's proof enough for [them]" that JJjr. has no "electability," among whites who hold dissimilar views to JJsr.

You are building a case against Reid for supposedly using the same type of evidence in Reid's analysis of JJjr's electability as you want to use in your case against Reid (Setting Whether or not Reid believes the things you have accused him of aside).

Your logic is absurd.

As I've suggested in other cases here, you should come up with better evidence.
