GOP Governors Back Obama On Stimulus Plan
NEW YORK -- Most Republican governors -- including Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas -- have broken with their GOP colleagues in Congress and are pushing for passage of President Barack Obama's economic aid plan that would send billions to states for education, public works and health care.
The 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, planned to meet in Washington this weekend with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and other senators to press for her state's share of the package.

Face The Nation Sunday, Feb. 1
CBS’s “Face the Nation” has Senators Mitch McConnell, the minority leader, and Charles E. Schumer, head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. NBC’s “Meet the Press” has Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison, Republican of Texas, and John Kerry, Democrat of Massachusetts. (NBC is noting special airtimes for the program due to the Super Bowl, by the way.)
On “Fox News Sunday,” Dick Durbin of Illinois represents the Senate Democrats, facing Jon Kyl of Arizona. Senator Dianne Feinstein of California is booked on CNN’s “State of the Union” with John Ensign, chairman of the Senate Republicans’ campaign arm.
Senator Jim DeMint, Republican of South Carolina is on ABC’s “This Week” with Representative Barney Frank, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, as well as Eric E. Schmidt, C.E.O. of Google, and Fred Smith, C.E.O. of FedEx. (Though given some of the controversy surrounding George Stephanopoulos and his daily chats with Rahm Emanuel, White House chief of staff, we’d almost prefer that the interrogator take questions).
Other non-Senators on the menu include Govs. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and Jennifer Granholm of Michigan, and Michael Steele, the new G.O.P. chairman, is on “Fox News Sunday.”
***Please Note: Due to Super Bowl programming, "Meet the Press" will air at a special time this week — 11am ET — right before NBC's Super Bowl pre-game show in most markets. Check your local listings at mtp.msnbc.com.***

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama congratulated Iraqis on Saturday's provincial elections and urged the winners to work for their people.
Obama said the elections for the provincial council seats were significant, peaceful and important steps toward Iraqis taking responsibility for their future. His statement did not address complaints from local officials that the Shiite-led government attempted to keep the minority Sunnis from full participation.
"Millions of Iraqi citizens from every ethnic and religious group went peacefully to the polls across the country to choose new provincial councils," Obama said in a statement released by the White House. "It is important that the councils get seated, select new governors and begin work on behalf of the Iraqi people who elected them."
Obama also noted that the U.S. provided technical assistance to the Iraqi electoral commission, as did the U.N. and other international groups. He didn't, however, mention the U.S. troops that patrolled the country - away from voting booths - while the new Obama administration in Washington considers a new strategy for the unpopular war in Iraq.

But I guess Michael "Steal" learned a valuable lesson......instead of mocking and laughing at the "community organizer" at the 2008 RNC convention, he in the end, wound up learning, and trying his damndest to emulate him.
JUNEAU, Alaska — Driving home at night from her Capitol office, the leader of Alaska's House Democrats often passes the governor's white-columned mansion and wonders why more lights aren't on.
Rep. Beth Kerttula assumes Gov. Sarah Palin is out of town, though Palin's staffers say so far their boss has been there for most of the legislative session that began Jan. 20.
It's a small matter, but it's part of the buzz around the Capitol among lawmakers who are seeing less of their governor than in years past and wondering what it means in the wake of a Republican vice presidential run that brought Palin global fame and notoriety.
They're accustomed to spotting her striding past, using two BlackBerries, stopping to chat in the hallway or inviting reporters into her office while she prepares for a speech.
Palin insists her focus is still on Alaska.
Some say she appears more tense than the vice presidential candidate who delivered sly jokes and incendiary speeches to packed rallies across the Lower 48.
"Not so sparky," said Sen. Bert Stedman, R-Sitka, who wonders if the distractions of her newfound celebrity will keep Palin from devoting her full attention to Alaska's looming budget shortfall.
Others grumble that she didn't seem to reach out to the nearly 60 lawmakers assembled before her.
"I think her speech was not directed to us but right over our heads to a national audience," said Rep. David Guttenberg, D-Fairbanks, who remembers a much different Palin from just six months ago.
THERE IS MORE.
THIS INFORMATION OUGHTA resonate NEGATIVELY to the GOP. BUT. . .
At any rate, ALASKANS have gotten BOLDER as they CALL HER OUT!!
THIS "call out" coupled with her "severe lack of skills" SHOULD diminish her stature/usefulness in the GOP. Hmmmmm.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Hardware stores and auto parts shops scored a post-holiday run of business this week as Anchorage-area residents stocked up on protective eyewear and masks ahead of a possible eruption of Mount Redoubt.
Monitoring earthquakes underneath the 10,200-foot Redoubt Volcano about 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, scientists from the Alaska Volcano Observatory warned that an eruption was imminent, sending experienced Alaskans shopping for protection against a dusty shower of volcanic ash that could descend on south-central Alaska.
"Every time this happens we do get a run on dust masks and goggles," said Phil Robinson, manager of an Alaska Industrial Hardware store in Anchorage. "That's the two main things for eye and respiratory protection."
Customer Ron Cowan picked up gear at the store Thursday before heading off to an auto parts store for a spare air filter. Story continues below

The seismic activity at Mount Redoubt has calmed somewhat since the strong tremors of Friday, but the activity still is above normal, the Alaska Volcano Observatory said Saturday morning.
"The volcano is in a state of unrest," the observatory said.
Web cameras "show a steam plume rising to roughly 10,500 feet," the observatory said.
But Redoubt has not erupted. On Friday, staff of the observatory flew by the volcano and saw "significant steaming" near the vent from Redoubt's 1989-1990 eruption, but no sign that ash was emitted. They also observed more runoff along the margins of the Drift glacier, the observatory said.
THIS IS GOOD NEWS!! :>)

I cussed out MANY people on this topic at work and my family members.
The woman is a good mother and she is not on the public dole. So what if she doesnt want to get married? She can do whatever she wants and we need to stay out of it.
Back in the day 14 kids was nothing. My parents had 8 kids and my husband's parents had 7. If I could afford it . . . I would have 10 more. It is possible to raise the kids without outside support. Many women have done just that. Folks need to back off and leave the woman alone and not be so quick to judge. If it isn't your thing . . . well fine but unless she knocks on your door and asks for formula or diapers . . .
There is no logical reason for a single woman to have 14 children when she doesn't have the adequate financial and physical support to take care of them. Just the time that has to be spent alone would wear out a person. Back in the day people didn't have 14 kids unless they were a 2 parent household with certain resources or they were having the kids to turn them into resources. Also a number of children died off and never made it to adulthood. This woman went to a doctor and cooked her up some babies. She sounds mentally ill.
Miranda
She is in her mother's home...a woman who quite frankly, has stated she is TIRED....per her own mother, this woman is not a good mother..she's a good breeder. There is a big difference.
Good grief, her poor father has to go back to his contractor's job in Iraq to help pay for this!
Val
Her mother can always tell her to leave Miranda and she hasn't. We don't know what their relationship is like so you can't judge it based on an article from the media.
Regarding going back to his contractors job . . .nothing in the article indicates he had a problem doing this. It is none of our business.
I have been trying to figure out how I feel about this. On one hand it seems wrong to judge a womans fertility but 14 children is not the norm. I worry that these children cannot be taken care of by one person. If we had a society that put children first this would not be an issue but a family that large on one paycheck is going to be next to impossible to care for. She better hope she get a show like Jon and Kate otherwise she is in some serious trouble.
Miranda
Its not wrong to judge a woman who received fertility treatments after already having 6 kids.....AS A RESULT OF FERTILITY TREATMENTS. She is not married and is living with her mother who clearly is TIRED. This is an issue regardless of whether society put children first because the parent of said children is a certifiable FOOL. She just wants to be pregnant and reproduce, not deal with the actual children that spring forth from her uterus..hence her mother's threat.
I wonder whether it is 'the kick' that some women get from being pregnant. It's a very powerful hormonal change that makes them high off their own bodies. Perhaps that is part of the problem.
However, popping kids like this smacks of irresponsibility--and worse, psychological problems. I think the state may have to step in again and take them away if she cannot care for them. The state already has to foot the bill for their births. And if one of the six kids she has is autistic, imagine what will occur when they find that one or a couple of those kids newly birthed may have physical or mental problems.
You notice that none of the pro-life people are sticking up publicly for this woman. This is straight madness.
What I am saying is that if we supported things like socialized daycare and ensured that no child grew in poverty, i.e actually believed in the concept of a village her choice of reproduction would not be problematic. If we truly believed that children were something that we should all invest in. I don't want to call her choice unrealistic but I doubt she thought deeply about the consequences of her actions. As a mother of two, I would have loved to have 2 to 3 more children but I realized that in the world we live in wherein womens choices and children are not respected this could not happen. I often wonder about what my other kids would have been like.
Well I can tell you if you didn't have everything in place financially and emotionally, they would've picked up on it and not understood what was fundamentally "wrong" with the family structure. They may have been forced to give up a part of their childhood to take care of their siblings. They would've wanted material things that other kids got that weren't in the family budget. If it was a 2-parent home that may have been a blessing but if either parent was emotional distant or just plain tired from the stress of working and raising an abundance of kids they would've felt neglected as well.
Unless the money situation was totally covered they may have had to go without a meal or eat nutritionally sustainable but unappetizing gov't food. Perhaps their own dreams for themselves would've been stifled because there were just too many mouths to feed or a never ending round of chores and they could barely have a moment for themselves. Of course they could've been like one of the Jolie-Pitt kids as well, so who knows.
I personally have none and I wonder if I should before it becomes difficult, but I am stuck on having the ideal scenario that hasn't happened yet.
rorysmomma
I worry about her because she seems unstable. Period.
But we have not heard directly from her. We have only heard from her parents. We cannot make a judgment until we hear her reasons directly from her.
rorysmomma
Valid point.? However, I am being uber judgemental, but I question the sanity of any person who wishes to have 14 children under the age of ten.... 8 of them being infants.
Miranda
This woman is not married and living with her mother...that's all I need to know to realize she isn't having children for noble reasons...she's having children to fill some sort of insane void.
What does her marital state have to do with her desire to procreate? Not all women need or want a man. What if she is a lesbian and has no desire for male companionship whatsoever. The idea that a man legitimizes women needs to end. We are independent autonomous beings.
Sepia
When you bring a child into this world, it's no longer about what you want or need. It's about what the child needs, and a child needs TWO parents who are financially (and most of all) mentally stable. This woman has demonstrated that she is neither. Yes, we haven't heard her speak, but her actions are speaking louder than her words.
I'm all for women being equal and having the freedom to do what we want with our bodies, but feminist ideologies can't excuse all behaviors.
Your argument means that those of lower class should never reproduce,. There are many poor families that cannot afford a child especially in this day and age of financial retraction. In fact financial stress is often the reason for divorce amongst the poor. You are setting a dangerous precedent by making class location as the sole marker of the right to reproduce.
Without a desire to procreate no child would be born. It is an absolute condition of reproduction in a society that allows both birth control and abortion.
BIGGIE_4_OBAMA
How does she support these children financially?
Town
She doesn't. Her daddy does. That's why he's going back to Iraq as a contractor to support his 14 grandchildren.
Val
Per the article - her father wants to "help". It didn't say he was solely responsible for supporting the kids.
I saw that on the news yesterday. You know I have no problem if the woman wants to have a bunch of kids, so long as she and her family can support them. Somehow I doubt that health insurance is shouldering the majority of costs associated with the octuplets...

Ballots will be tamper-proof and cannot be copied. Each voter will be required to show their ID on the day of voting. Indelible ink that takes days to come off will be put on the voters’ finger to ensure he or she doesn’t vote more than once. The color of the ink is being kept a secret until the day of the election.

"Americans know that our economic recovery will take years -- not months," he said. "But they will have little patience if we allow politics to get in the way of action, and our economy continues to slide." Obama said on Saturday.
Do you think this is true? Do Americans truly 'know' this? Is Obama right to try and lower expectations regarding the effects of his massive, so-called 'stimulus' bill?
What will happen to the bill now that it has reached the Senate? Will Dems compromise and craft a leaner bill that provides pure, immediate, targeted stimulus, or will Reid continue with the Pelosi/Emmanuel strategy of "We won." ?
After all of the debate we have had thus far, what would commentors here like to see happen with the outcome of this proposal?
