Michelle Obama is getting a lot of attention for her keen fashion sense, but it seems that she passed along her style gene to daughters Malia and Sasha. In November, the first lady’s team approached J.Crew about submitting sketches for inaugural events, and the label submitted 20 sketches based on details they received about the first family. “Malia, she likes pleats and pared-down things and is not a huge fan of sparkles, but little Sasha loves bright colors and sparkly things,” said Jenna Lyons, J.Crew’s creative director. It seems that at age 10, Malia’s fashion tastes tend to be on the sophisticated end of the scale, while Sasha, 7, prefers to dress more playfully. So far, Malia and Sasha have worn two outfits each designed for them by J.Crew, and Michelle Obama has worn one; There were 15 outfits, comprised of about six pieces each, created for the Obama women. Come fall, similar clothes will be introduced into the crewcuts by J.Crew line, but they won’t be exactly the same. “They’ll be versions of them but not the exact coat, in that color, with those buttons,” Lyons said. “Malia and Sasha will not go to school next year and see the girl next to them wearing the same coat.”

First Lady Michelle Obama, who has described herself "first and foremost...Malia and Sasha's mom," has defended her daughters' likeness, saying that it is not proper for a company that makes the plush "Beanie Babies" to produce dolls called "Sweet Sasha" and "Marvelous Malia."

"We feel it is inappropriate to use young, private citizens for marketing purposes," Michelle Obama's press secretary, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, said in a statement today.

Ty Inc. recently released the 12-inch dolls in their collection called "TyGirlz." The dolls have soft brown skin, big eyes. The "Sweet Sasha" doll wears two pony tails and a pink and white t-shirt. The "Marvelous Malia" doll wears her hair to the right side and a blue-green shirt.

The doll company, which is based in Oak Brook, Ill., has said the dolls are not made to be exact replications of the president's daughters and are not based on the Obama girls.

Since Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, arrived in the national spotlight as their father, now President Barack Obama, ran for office, fascination with the Obama girls has grown intense with web sites devoted to photos of the girls, what they are wearing, what they are doing. The girls have become fashion icons. Thousands of people tried ordering the J. Crew coats the girls wore on inauguration day. Malia wore a blue coat with a blue bow and Sasha wore a guava colored coat with a tangerine scarf.

Girls across the Washington area watched Malia and Sasha dance at the Kids Concert at the Verizon center last Monday. They have read about the sleepover the Obama girls had at the White House and the surprise visit by the Jonas Brothers. Children have written to the Obamas inviting the girls to join local Girl Scout troops, clubs and play groups. Michelle Obama's spokesperson has said that the First Lady is focused on making sure the girls are settled in their new life in Washington.

On Thursday, Jenna and Barbara Bush, daughters of former president George W. Bush, wrote a letter to Sasha and Malia, giving them advice on living as "family members of a President" in the national spotlight.

"Sasha and Malia," the Bushes wrote in a letter published in the Wall Street Journal, "it is your turn now to fill the White House with laughter...It isn't always easy being a member of the club you are about to join. Our dad, like yours, is a man of great integrity and love; a man who always put us first. We still see him now as we did when we were seven: as our loving daddy. Our Dad, who read to us nightly, taught us how to score tedious baseball games. He is our father, not the sketch in a paper or part of a skit on TV. Many people will think they know him, but they have no idea how he felt the day you were born, the pride he felt on your first day of school, or how much you both love being his daughters. So here is our most important piece of advice: remember who your dad really is."

Tomorrow on National Geographic Channel, there's a doc on Air Force One and the viewer gets a look at the President's first ride. Even though I've seen a trailer several times, I just can't get enough of it.

I was thinking of this earlier. A bit of the discussion on CNN this after before I left was Don Lemon talking about Michelle's achievements and how the focus was on the externals (hair, fashion sense, etc.). I've heard the president say things about Michelle, e.g., she is the force behind him, she's the love of his life, etc., in which there is absolutely no doubt that he greatly respects and loves her. She may actually do more for the promotion of women than simply having a woman president in the acceptance of women as leaders.

Personally I don't count Golda Meir or Margaret Thatcher as women leaders but hawks who just happened to be women.

Japanese learn English using Obama speeches

OKYO (AP) — Aspiring English speakers in Japan have made President Barack Obama's book of speeches and accompanying CD a national best-seller.

In Aichi, central Japan, a Buddhist monk has reportedly been playing the president's speeches during his temple service. And dozens of students in an English-language class in Tokyo have been memorizing his 2004 Democratic Convention speech to improve their understanding and pronunciation.

"Tonight is a particular honor for me because, let's face it, my presence on this stage is pretty unlikely," the students at Kaplan Japan school recited together Friday.

"The Speeches of Barack Obama" has sold 420,000 copies since its release on Nov. 20 — an "unprecedented huge hit" for an English-language text, according to publisher Asahi Press.

Any book that sells more than 100,000 copies in Japan, which has a population of 128 million, is considered a success, and foreign-language publication sales rarely exceed 20,000, the publisher said.

I also have to say that January is my favorite. And speaking of Obama Merchandise, I actually DID get two different Obama calendars from my in-laws in D.C. They also sent a t-shirt with a gold-studded image of Obama and the words "Change has come to America." Did you get that? Little gold bedazzled studs all over an XL black shirt. And they gave us TWO of these for my husband and me. I don't know what I'm going to do with all this stuff. (I guess it just goes in the hope chest for my daughter to marvel over years from now, along with the knock-off Obama watch and a million buttons.)

About Shoppers Drug Mart, I used to work at a Wal-Mart. African-American hair care products did get stolen quite a bit. But so did cosmetics. And so did perfume & cologne. So did tampons, condoms, home pregnancy tests, nicotine patches, diet pills, etc. None of those items are under lock and key at Wal-Mart (including AA hair care). So Shoppers Drug Mart, what's your excuse?

It looks like a subtle way to humiliate and dehumanize their Afro-Canadian shoppers. I hope some boycotts are being organized.
