Yeah, I saw this commerical on TVOne during the New Year's Day "Jeffersons" marathon, and I had to post it here.

My biological father left my mother when I was 2, so the man I call Daddy is actually my stepfather. He raised me from 2 years old til adulthood. In fact, he is my Daddy! I call my biological father by his first name, I can count the number of times I talked to bio dad on one hand. I talk to my Daddy all the time, and he calls me randomly just to hear my voice he says.

The thing I liked about this commercial, is that he doesn't really say if the "Dads" are bio dads or not, they just say that it's the little things that influence a kids life.

Anyway, my daddy memory is of when I first hit puberty. My peiod had come down at school, and they couldn't reach my mom, so my dad had to come and pick me up from school, take me to K&B Drugstore (ol school pharmacy in New Orleans) to pick up some sanitary napkins. I was embarassed, he had no idea what he was doing, but to this day, I remember it.

One of my earliest "television memories" is of watching the Mummers parade on TV. I haven't thought about them for many years.

Usually I'm with you, but I am already a little weary of all of the Michelle Obama "ass-whooping" imagery. I'm sorry, but I like the idea of a First Lady who is a proud African-American woman, who, yeah, can kick someone's ass - not the helpless, sniveling women (Hillary and Jackie Kennedy being the exceptions, and maybe Rosalynn Carter) we have had to endure since there have been First Ladies.

Sometimes, I get a laugh, sometimes I don't - just like Almond Joy. LOL

Well I like the idea of a First Lady who is a proud African-American woman with no need to resort to "kicking someone's ass" to prove how "strong" she is. And she could care less about being pegged as "helpless" or "sniveling" because she is secure enough not to go there.

Believe it or not, some proud Black women get through life and accomplish things without "smearing vaseline" on their face and kicking ass. Even if they can - Not unlike our First Lady.

Also, I would add Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford (founder of the Berry Ford Center, one of the first public figures to discuss her breast cancer) and Nancy Reagan (not always likeable, but hardly helpless) to the non "helpless/sniveling" First Lady list.

As I said earlier, generally I'm with you - and I'm all for humor - but I am really over this ass-kicking "Superwoman" Amazonian stereotype for Black women.

I don't know about you guys but I've been feeling a little but on edge because whenever I watch or read the news everything is so negative and sensational. Don't get me wrong, I love some of the drama, but sometimes it gets to be too much.

Anyway, I was searching the net for sites that didn't talk about war, economic collapse or Hiedi and Spencer from The Hill's and found happynews.com. It's a cute little site focusing on the positive news stories of the day. I've read a few of the articles and there are some feel good stories so I thought I'd pass it site along.

WOW! Well, that's what I get for talking and not doing! I totally had this idea when I lived in Charlotte (6 years ago) - I just sent the link to a friend to show it COULD be done and someone did it!!

Let's all shared Daddy moments. I can say, one of my cooler Daddy moments was in high school for sewing class when I lost the zipper I needed to complete a pouch for my first grade in the course. I called my Dad in the middle of the day to to see if he could save the day. Didn't want to made a bad grade because according to Daddy C on a grade was for average and he did have any average kids (we all had the smarts to make better grades) and C in conduct was for clown and he didn't raise not clowns. He would allow a B in conduct if the grade were a high A in the course because then obviously you were bored, lol. As a sidenote, I did make a C in conduct in SEWING! Singing baby take your time, take your time do it right, you can do it baby, do it tonight, lol!

Anyway, he was able to come to bring my zipper to the school. When he arrived he asked to see my fabric for the pouch. ( I wasn't gonna say that the blue didn't match my fabric, because I was just glad for the save) He went back to the store took my fabric with him and my zipper was just the shade of turqoise to match perfectly. I made an A on my first sewing project. My little pouch was super cute. Plus, he did it all with no complaints.

Erry payday, he would bring his PAY home and count IT out at the kitchen table.

I've only known one man in my life that would hand over his entire paycheck to his wife and that is one of my sister's husband. I always was amazed by that.

My ex gave me money but he didn't give it all to me(lol) but my sister's husband sure did!

You all have had me crying. That's why I loved this clip...it was of a Daddy doing something absolutely ridiculous for his baby girl.

I love sports because of Daddy. He had me watching golf, when we were the ONLY Black folks in the gallery. We were watching tennis before Venus and Serena. Daddy taught me how to fill out my scorecard at the baseball game. We'd spend the day; he packed a lunch. He bought me my first transistor radio. There we were, sitting at Comiskey Park or Wrigley Field, looking at the game, filling out our scorecards, with the ear pieces in our ears, listening to Jack Brickhouse or Harry Caray call the games.

He used to take us (Mama and I) shopping. He'd bring along a stack of magazines and newspapers, and the radio. Find a bench, and tell us to take our time.

I learned how to cook because of Daddy. He made 98 out of every 100 meals fixed in our house.

While Chicago was still a segregated city when I was growing up, Daddy wanted me to have the best. So, off to Magnet School I went, and when I wound up making friends with folks all around the city, Daddy never said anything about it when I wanted to go to parties. He just made sure that HE was the one taking me. I was young; I was naive. I realize NOW, that my father wasn't going to have his daughter, on the bus or the 'el' at night, trying to get home in neighborhoods that weren't too friendly to those of us with melanin in our skin. That there was a reason why he arrived at every party I went to a half hour early. It wasn't just to inform me that he was there - I always knew Daddy would be there. It would be so that the parent in the house, just in case one of their neighbors looked out the window and saw a Black man sitting out in a car and called the PO-Lice, would be able to 'speak up' for Daddy. Daddy protected me and let me grow at the same time.

My daddy drove me 30 miles to my weekly piano lessons but I think my most memorable moment was when I was 20 yrs old and me and a friend, being fast, decided to drive from FAMU to my my family reunion in Tuscaloosa, AL because we didnt wanna be in Tallahassee that weekend. We had exactly $20...that's it. Now my parents had already told me not to come but Pam talked me into it.....I had JUST gotten that Sentra the month before.....and wouldn't you know it....yep...sitting at a light in Troy, AL.....got hit from behind by this old man in a Cadillac the size of a yacht...and that rammed me into the Lincoln Continental in front of us....my car was smashed in from both front and back...but the two big azz cars were not even scratched! Pam was asleep and got thrown forward, hurting her neck and she was bitching about her pain....I stepped out, as the state trooper is talking to me...it started to rain....and he's trying to ask me something....and all of a sudden I just turned to him and started crying and saying over and over "I want my daddy! I want my daddy! I dont know what you're asking me!! I need my daddy!!".................yep...that's how THAT went down....LOL

Geez, that can be really frightening especially when you're not suppose to be in a certain place and an accident happens! Whew!!!!!!!!!

My Daddy moment was a life lesson of learning about Crabs in a Barrel.

We'd gone crabbing in the San Jacinto River just outside Houston and I was about five years old. We'd filled up pails of crabs - some to sell; others to keep for gumbo and any other way you could cook crabs. There was a blue crab in the pail and it was trying to climb out. My father asked me to watch the blue crab. Just as it got to the lid to haul itself out to freedom, two orange crab legs hauled him back into the pail and buried him under the rest of the crabs.

"Never allow people to let you get to the edge and pull you back. Keep going, no matter who says what you can't do or why you can't do it. People will pull you into their shyt instead of taking care of their own because they don't want to see you get anywhere in life."

My mother: "Burdett, she's only five years old. She can't understand what you're saying to her and she won't remember it; she's too little."

My daddy: "Not Leutisha - she was born with a veil over her face, remember? The parents said she would be a wise little girl who will probably scare us with what she knows and understands. Hell, she was already reading before she was two years old - you think she'll forget what her daddy taught her?"

My father believed in me - and he was one of those take-no-shyt brothas who would put a fist in a saltine's mouth before he could get the word "Nigger" out. It was that lesson that has sustained me from the time I was a little girl. There were times I'd compete in modelling pagents and whatnot and I'd be the only little black girl on that stage. Many times I lost those competititons, but I never stop competing because I was Black or a female. I believed I was as good as anyone else, and my race never made me too afraid to engage in competition THEN or NOW.

What's so fascinating is here we are, sharing this info, and we've never been around each other or anything. And I swear, every person that my grandmother & mother stated had a veil over their face were very gifted & wise people. I kid you not!

You know how the grandparents were, Justice. I kept hearing about "you know she was born with a veil over her face" every time I was asked to read a sign or a paper, to demonstrate to naysayers in the family that I could already read before I hit kindergarten.

The school wanted to skip me a grade, but my mother wanted me with peers my own age so I wouldn't be encountering peer pressure before I needed to, so that's that.

I feel you miranda, I was in labor and I was running an extremely high fever, and I was tired and in pain. I kept crying for my dad, but he had passed on two years prior. girl, you had the right idea. when I wrecked my car he was the first person I called.

I had a similar moment when I had a car accident. And he was there in a flash to save me =-)

Lawd.....I remember all those endless drives my dad made to get me to twirling lessons & waiting patiently during the lessons.

.... And guess what?.....I wasn't even in the band! (my kids were) lol
I just wanted to learn how to twirl!

Dang, Justice, I remember another "Daddy" moment.

Remember World Finest Chocolate Almond Candy Bars they sell for fundraising? My dad took two boxes to his job and sold them all for me; he helped me sell enough candy to win the prize of a radio for selling close to $50 dollars worth of candy back in 1971.

I was very proud of that radio and my daddy helped me sell enough World's Finest Candy in order to win it.

back in 1996 my Daddy sold $20 calendars for a ritzy group I was apart of. I was one of the only girls black or white who sold are her calendars. He sold a bunch of them in the hit /shot house (house of a probaby retired single woman who sold drinks in her living room/ala club and played the blues) to tipsy folks. But, that is just details =-)

But the fact is, your daddy did it to help you.

Dang, I wish Obama had talked to a few of us before he made that Fathers' Day speech. We could have pointed him to our examples of good, responsible fathers. Many brothas like our dads got turned off by Obama's speech - they're still mumbling about how they felt he dissed and talked down to them in order to curry favor with the others.

You mentioning Calendars reminded Me of how I sold Band Calendars for my kids. I sold the hell out of those Calendars! When it came to fundraising, I was out there for my kids to help put money in their Band account for trips. I was tired as a son-of-a-biscuit eater, but I did it!

Oh yes, do I ever remember that Candy!

Not as good now as it was then. Chock full of almonds and rich chocolate.

The bars they sell today; I'll still buy one from a child I see selling them here in DC, because they remind me of my Daddy selling that candy for me to win that prize. But they sure skimp on the almonds and that's the best part. LOL

my Dad, was also very patient and timely for any activity of kiddos plus very engaged and interested, too.

I remember my dad attending all my basketball and volleyball games when I was in school. And I sucked at basketball and volleyball. But he was there cheering me on. Since I went to a small private school some of our games were at schools up to an hour away. But he was always there offering to drive me and my teammates.

Since I became an "adult" I can't even count the times I got in a jam and needed him to come deliver a spare key to me in the middle of the night because I was locked out of my apartment or car. Not to mention the times he came all the way into the city because I needed help with something simple like hanging a picture or putting together a table.

My dad is awesome.

That is so sweet. I can talk about my dad all day and night. He wasn't just my dad either. Several of my aunts were single mommas..... He was surrogate daddy uncle, and grandaddy for at least 10 children. He attended functions, paid for school clothes, school supplies, and everything. I miss him horribly, but they miss him just as much and their deadbeat daddies are now somewhat involved. They couldn't hold a candle to their Uncle Calvin.

me too...My Dad was also Dad to many others as well, since he worked at a community center. Many kids called my Dad Daddy and relied on him for all manner of needs. My cousins, too. We could probably talk for hours about our Daddies.

I was an angel in a Christmas play at school. You would have thought I was playing the Virgin Mary in that sucker - my mom had to work, but I looked out in the audience and there was my DAD, front and center and hollering, "that's my baby up there!".

I think the school took pictures and stuff - and there's me and daddy cheesing for the camera - me in the white sheet and silver halo on my head, and my Dad looking like a Black version of Ward Cleaver, skinning so hard for the camera I thought his teeth would break.

I had a 14 yo cousin to pass away a few months ago due to a seizure, where he stopped breathing. Just too sad!

I can't imagine the pain Travolta and his family are going through right now.

Why didn't Reid "fear" Duckworth would lose to a Republican? Didn't she lose her race?

Or maybe Reid had no fear that Duckworth or Madigan would lose statewide because the Democrats would put their muscle and might into backing Duckworth and Madigan out but werent' going to help out JJJ, Davis or Jones?

And maybe THIS is why Blago picked Burris, a BLACK man because black candidates were on Reid's DO NOT CALL list. Maybe THIS is why Blago flipped up the whole racial deck and brought Rush to co-sign, because Reid & Co. had played it on him first.

And now they're saying some of this might be on tape? Pass the popcorn.

Now they're stripping Blago of his homeland security credentials. Why? He's still the Gov. of IL. So if Al Qaeda blew up the Sears Tower today, Blago can't perform his gubernatorial duties because what?

I would think all of this would piss people in IL off that all these other people from other entities and states are coming down telling IL how to handle their business.

I need for Blago to runteldat all about Reid's involvement in this mess. Hell, if you're going down, don't go down alone. All of this "black = unelectable" mess has got to go in the '09. They tried that unelectable mess on Obama, they tried it back on Doug Wilder in '89 and it's got to stop. Every other group gets to try their hand but black folks need to sit down because 'we're unelectable?" Get out of here with that!

This is why I was glad Bobby Rush mad a point to mention there were no Black Senators. I know he isn't the model for Black solidarity but what he said was ON POINT!

CASE IN POINT - the Dark Sith. There was a respectable and electable challenger to Harold Ford's nomination for the Senate seat - a council or assembly woman named Rosalind Kurita. She had good credentials; she was a registered nurse by profession and had a history of advocating for health care reform. Her problem was that she couldn't raise money to remain competitive with Ford because Chuck Schumer called Tennessee Democratic Leadership and ordered them to throw their support behind Harold Ford or ELSE.

Since he's out of the circles in DC, it may not be long before Merrill Lynch cuts their ties to him as well, because he no longer has the perceived political clout he had when they first hired him. Fox News cut him loose - which is why he's on MSNBC, but that might be with a shelf life date soon to expire in the New Year.

Gray Davis was loathed. I mean, I don't understand why even now, but he was set up by energy (read "Big Oil") interests who pushed Arnold into running after Davis cut into their profits with electricity deregulation. The resultant energy crisis in Cali broke him.

Davis didn't invite a lovefest among Dems either. They thought he was too bland, conservative, dry, unexciting, and moral. That last one made me laugh because he had continuing problems stemming from questionable campaign contributions. The man was always flush but stingy about sharing the war chest with other Dems. Right wing talk radio, I hear, was instrumental in his defeat by having listeners fan out recall sheets.

Yeah, but if Ah-nold wanted the job, he could have challenged Davis when it was re-election time. As a California resident, there's no worse feeling than engaging in the election process and then having an entity discount your vote like you didn't matter.

I was happy to get my own revenge on Ah-nold by helping to send those ballot initiatives he called a special election for (and we couldn't afford) to defeat.

I know and I take some comfort in knowing those people are suffering a little bit now but not as much as they should be!
