PARIS — A French black group is parading a Barack Obama-lookalike at the lower house of parliament and in Paris in a campaign to highlight its concerns about alleged racial profiling by police in France.
After a stout "Yes We Can!," American actor Michael Lamar met lawmakers at the National Assembly for Monday's start of a media blitz by the Representative Council of Black Associations.
For years, the group, known by the French acronym CRAN, has raised questions about a country that has championed a colorblind standard that sees all citizens as just French, regardless of ethnic origins _ and where collecting racial data is banned.
The group wants a meeting with Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie to discuss a survey it commissioned last year that showed "visible minorities" say they get stopped by police more often by police than other people.
Playing along after meeting Lamar, Green party lawmaker Yves Cochet said: "The presence at our side of 'Mr. Obama' is the sign that France should become as generous and egalitarian as the United States can be."
Lamar, a San Francisco native who now lives in Philadelphia, was being taken _ dressed neatly in suit and tie _ to a police station and other parts of the capital, and CRAN was filming the reactions of passers-by for an upcoming publicity spot, the group said.
The videos were also planned "to prompt dialogue on these issues that expose the backwardness of our country and its decision-makers when public opinion is concerned," it said.
Interior Ministry spokesman Gerard Gachet said French police do not stop people based on ethnic or racial backgrounds, and it would be "unthinkable" that such a policy could ever be put in place.
Mr. President-Elect Obama - - REPRESENTIN' in PARIS!! :>)
Last Thursday, President-elect Barack Obama gave a major speech outlining his American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan.
We asked some of the leading members of the Transition’s policy teams to sit down and talk a bit about it—why it’s necessary, how it will work, and how we’ll make sure it’s as efficient and effective as it is bold.
We compiled their responses into a short video, touching on each of the major elements of the plan.
WASHINGTON — Advisers to President-elect Barack Obama say one of his first duties in office will be to order the closing of the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay. That executive order is expected during Obama's first week on the job _ and possibly on his first day, according to two transition team advisers. Both spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
Obama's order will direct his administration to figure out what to do with the estimated 250 al-Qaida and Taliban suspects and potential witnesses who are being held at Guantanamo.
It's still unlikely the prison would be closed any time soon. Obama last weekend said it would be "a challenge" to close it even within the first 100 days of his administration.
Barack Obama will address House Republicans shortly after his inauguration, a GOP leadership aide said Monday.
The new president will likely attend the weekly Capitol Hill caucus of the House Republicans within three weeks of being sworn in.
“We got an enthusiastic ‘yes’ from Rahm [Emanuel],” said the GOP aide, referring to Obama’s incoming chief of staff and a former House member.
House GOP leaders last week invited Obama to address one of their meetings, an appearance the Republicans says would be keeping with the president-elect’s call for a new brand of politics.
"In accordance with your campaign pledge to work in a bipartisan manner and change the partisan tone in Washington, D.C., we would like to extend an invitation to you to address a meeting of the House Republican Conference,” wrote the eight members of the House Republican leadership to Obama in a letter dated January 9th.
The two parties meet separately each week the House is in session. President George W. Bush never made an appearance at the Democratic caucus meeting on Capitol Hill, but he did attend the House Democrats retreat in 2001, soon after taking office.
Much like Obama is now, Bush said at the time he was focused on fostering “a civil tone in our discourse."
But after working closely with Hill Democrats on his education bill, relations between Bush and the congressional opposition frayed.
When Bush attended the same House Democratic retreat in 2007 — after Democrats had recaptured control of Congress — House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) noted that some in his caucus had been asking of Bush: "Why is he coming?”
Now, as both parties prepare to address the gasping economy, House Majority Leader John A. Boehner and his whip, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), say they want to find common ground with the president-elect.
“House Republicans stand ready to work with you to restore economic prosperity in America, and we do not want partisan differences to stall achievement in those areas where we share common goals on behalf of the American people,” the GOP leaders wrote.
In all their planning to cover Barack Obama's inauguration as the nation's 44th president, television networks have paid particular attention to people who must spend their day in front of a computer.
CBS News has built a special inauguration Web site to show its coverage on Jan. 20. CNN.com will have four live streams and will allow Facebook users to connect through its site. ABC is offering online archived speeches of past presidents. Fox News and MSNBC Web sites will both stream the inauguration live online.
"There are a lot of people who are going to be captivated by the entire day, and a lot of them are not going to be able to have a television set in the office, or have access to a television," said Sean McManus, CBS News president. The online coverage "has a much higher priority than it has in the past."
McManus has experience with the online audience of people who are supposed to be working; he's also president of CBS Sports, which streams the opening days of the NCAA men's basketball tournament.
The Facebook deal is part of how CNN is experimenting to find the right way to get viewers involved with the event, much like the debate it co-sponsored during primary season with YouTube, said David Bohrman, CNN senior vice president and Washington bureau chief. He senses that a lot of people on Jan. 20 will want to communicate with friends.
"People are just trying to figure out the blend right now," Bohrman said. "Everyone knows that there's something there, and this is an interesting step in the evolution. If you look at this moment in eight or 10 years it will be interesting to see what panned out and what went nowhere."
None of this means the networks are shortchanging their television plans. Like Election Night, a presidential inauguration is an event that has been in the planning for a long time and brings out the "A" team. It's even more so now, as Obama's installation as president caps a campaign that drew extraordinary interest from viewers.
"For a news division, it is the gift that keeps on giving," McManus said.
CBS' daytime coverage on Inauguration Day stretches from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The network had originally planned to end it earlier, but its affiliates said they'd prefer more from Washington than the usual daytime talk shows, he said.
Besides the daytime ceremonies anchored by Charles Gibson, ABC will devote its entire prime-time lineup for the first time to the inauguration. For two hours, ABC will be on site at the "Neighborhood Inaugural Ball," covering musical performances and the new president and first lady's first dance of the night. At 10 p.m. EST, ABC will track the other inaugural balls and report on the day's special significance for black Americans.
Brian Williams will anchor the daytime coverage for NBC and a live, one-hour special at 10 p.m. that visits several inaugural balls. CBS' Katie Couric will anchor a 9 p.m. EST special on Obama's journey to the White House, then do a live Webcast reviewing the day's events on CBSNews.com and CNET.com.
The networks are preparing for an inauguration event that may be larger than anything they've seen before, CNN's Bohrman said.
"I don't think any of us realized how big this inaugural was going to be," he said.
Coverage of the event actually begins three days earlier, when CNN's Wolf Blitzer follows Obama's Saturday train ride from Pennsylvania to Washington. Blitzer and Anderson Cooper will be CNN's lead personalities for the inauguration.
On Fox News Channel, the inauguration will be the first big political event in years not anchored by Brit Hume, who has taken on a part-time role. Chris Wallace and Shepard Smith will be the main anchors, with Hume replacement Bret Baier getting both morning and evening duty.
Following its template from big political events last year, MSNBC will originate from an outdoor location on the National Mall, with Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow and Eugene Robinson. CNBC airs an all-day "CNBC Reports: President Obama & Your Money."
Jim Lehrer anchors PBS' inaugural coverage, with columnists David Brooks and Mark Shields among his panelists. PBS' "NewsHour" also has an extensive Web site with forums where voters can pose questions.
For those who want a realistic sense of being there, C-SPAN's four days of coverage marks major events with no narration.
The event has attracted some extraordinary TV attention, with networks like Nickelodeon, QVC, BET and TV One planning events. The night before the inauguration, The Disney Channel will air a concert honoring military families, "Kids' Inaugural: We Are the Future."
PLANS ARE BEING MADE FOR ERRYBODY TO WATCH THIS HISTORICAL and MOMENTOUS EVENT!! :>) :>)
Did anyone see the entire show today? Something pissed me off a little more than Ann "Afghan Hound" Coulter's mindless dribble.
During Hot Topics, Elisabitch Hasselbeck was going on and on about her visit with Bush at the White House, and how such a wonderful president he has been, blah, blah fukkedy blah. However, this wench couldn't make it her business to visit Walter Reed?
This heffa goes on and on about how we should support the troops and insinuates that if you disagree with the war, then you're against the troops, made it seem like Rosie O'Donnell thinks the troops are terrorists.....etc., but she couldn't find the time to visit the troops at Walter Reed?
Rant off.

Joe the Plumber has been reporting from Israel in his new position as Pajamas Media war correspondent.
The campaign trail celebrity went to war to correct what he saw as a glaring oversight in the journalism field: "They're supposed to bring the news to you unbiased. They're supposed to actually report it and then let you make your opinion ... What I can provide are actual real questions and get real answers. I'm not talking manufactured answers, I'm not talking soundbites...And uh, not giving it any kind of slants."
Talking to reporters in Israel, Joe went even further, suggesting that journalists shouldn't be allowed anywhere near war zones: "I don't think journalists should be anywhere allowed war (sic). I mean, you guys report where our troops are at. You report what's happening day to day. You make a big deal out of it. I think it's asinine. You know, I liked back in World War I and World War II when you'd go to the theater and you'd see your troops on, you know, the screen and everyone would be real excited and happy for them. Now everyone's got an opinion and wants to downer-and down soldiers. You know, American soldiers or Israeli soldiers."
[evita here ROFL: He asking for propaganda? That man is dense.]
It's not clear how this philosophy jibes with this exchange, transcribed by Firedoglake, where Joe tries to force an Israeli reporter to judge whether or not the country is "bad."
JOE: The story here is people are being killed and the media's slanting it and trying to make it Hamas is, uh, as far as, that Israel's being bad. Do you believe Israel is bad?
REPORTER: Do I believe it?
JOE: Yeah, do you?!
REPORTER: I'm Israeli, so...
JOE: So answer the question! Story continues below
REPORTER: No, I don't think Israel is bad.
JOE: Do you think Israel has every right to protect itself?
REPORTER: Yeah.
[pause]
JOE: You do?!
REPORTER: Yeah.
JOE: Have you said that on air?
REPORTER: I'm just a reporter.

Burris, Blago Win 12 Jan 2009 04:27 pm
A joint statement from Senate Majority Leader Reid and Majority Whip Dick Durbin, annotated.
"The Secretary of the Senate has determined that the new credentials presented today on behalf of Mr. Burris now satisfy Senate Rules and validate his appointment to the vacant Illinois Senate seat. In addition, as we requested, Mr. Burris has provided sworn testimony before the Illinois House Committee on Impeachment regarding the circumstances of his appointment.
Wow, did we mess this up. The guy just did an end-run around all of us. We expected him to be Blago-like, but he wasn't. He was senatorial. Agreeable. Maybe he can win...uh, downstate. And .. we messed up the racial politics of this big-time. So... in order to save some face, we'll just create a procedural defense: we always intended to seat the guy, but his paperwork wasn't in order.
"We have spoken to Mr. Burris to let him know that he is now the Senator-designate from Illinois and as such, will be accorded all the rights and privileges of a Senator-elect.
We apologized.
"Accordingly, barring objections from Senate Republicans, we expect Senator-designee Burris to be sworn in and formally seated later this week. We are working with him and the office of the Vice President to determine the date and time of the swearing-in.
As we worried all along, the Republicans are saying that Democrats caved and appointed Blago's hand-picked senator.
"As we had outlined to Mr. Burris, a path needed to be followed that respects the rules of the Senate. We committed to Mr. Burris that once those requirements were satisfied, we would be able to proceed. We are pleased that everything is now in order, we congratulate Senator-designee Burris on his appointment and we look forward to working with him in the 111th Congress."]
This has been an enormous distraction. Obama's annoyed with us. Other senators are annoyed with us. The black caucus is annoyed with us. We need to move on, and quickly. Why didn't we go with a special election, again?
"The Secretary of the Senate has determined that the new credentials presented today on behalf of Mr. Burris now satisfy Senate Rules and validate his appointment to the vacant Illinois Senate seat. In addition, as we requested, Mr. Burris has provided sworn testimony before the Illinois House Committee on Impeachment regarding the circumstances of his appointment."
Man, Blago handed us our asses.
"We have spoken to Mr. Burris to let him know that he is now the Senator-designate from Illinois and as such, will be accorded all the rights and privileges of a Senator-elect."
Obama told us we better seat that man if we know what's good for us.
"As we worried all along, the Republicans are saying that Democrats caved and appointed Blago's hand-picked senator."
We're going to try to blame the Republicans on this.
"As we had outlined to Mr. Burris, a path needed to be followed that respects the rules of the Senate. We committed to Mr. Burris that once those requirements were satisfied, we would be able to proceed. We are pleased that everything is now in order, we congratulate Senator-designee Burris on his appointment and we look forward to working with him in the 111th Congress."
We repeat: Blago handed us our asses. Happy New Year and Congratulations to Sen.-elect Roland Burris.

Magic Johnson needs a meeting w/ the Drop Squad for his irresponsible behavior and bad advice. this is going tohurt alot of people.
I just saw a commercial for HewlittJackson. In it Magic suggested you take a loan against your income tax refund. The loans are more expensive than payday loans and are not capped. Taking these loans no matter what your financial situtation is just giving money away and potentially ruining your credit score if you can't pay it back. In a time of paying down debt there is no reason to hurt yourself.
Miranda
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree, Robert M, I saw the commercial this weekend. Here's a link to the announcement of Johnson agreeing to be Hewlitt 's spokesperson. WTF is wrong with him? http://news.prnewswire.com/ViewContent.aspx?ACC...

I've been hearing those ads on the radio. I feel like I'm in that movie "Undercover Brother" when they get the General to sell fried chicken. SMH. Not only is it bad for your credit score, it will take you longer to get your stimulus check as well. That will be worse for the people who are already hard up on money who would want to get these loans. I hate that this shit is targeted towards black people.
spirit_55z
Co-sign, carolinagirl. You know this is the kind of shit that that looney nut job bitch michelle bachman used to blame blacks for the wall street meltdown and the phucked up economy. Johnson needs to be taken out the back door behind the wood shed and,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I guess folks think movies are made for free. They can complain all they want too about what movies are put in the theatres that are geared towards black folks.... but if nobody will actually go see The Great Debaters, The Secret Life of Bees or Akeelah and the Bee then don't get ya panties in a knot when they crowd the Magic Johnson theatre to see the latest MaDear movie. It is what it is.
spirit_55z
Agree. Miranda, you BEE bringin it!
Miranda
Movies are really a good barometer of what will appeal to the masses of black people...and unfortunately, we don't seem to want to go to see movies with compelling , thought-provoking themes. Maybe people just want a simple, don't have to think too much, comedy or the standard Morris Chestnut + Gabrielle/Sanaa/Taraji (take your pick) relationship story....I dont know...but its really not that there hasnt been a serious effort, heck...they can't MAKE us go to the threater, can they?
Elaine
A very frightening thing said to me by a very frightening CAUCASIAN misanthrope-playwright in NYC is that white people and black people are equally ignorant and stupid. However, since there are more white people, there are proportionally more white people in a minority who "aren't Philistines" and who could support certain types of arts and films as patrons and as audiences than the same group of more "educated" black people. This person is pretty famous and used to be an idol of mine until he started getting gruff and mean. However, do you think he has a point?
Town
The movie studios are only going to put the money into the same formulaic movies that are being churned out time and time again.
For the white man, they'll make the same Matt Damon spy thriller.
For the white woman, they'll make the same Kate Hudson, Jennifer Anniston whiny chick flick.
For the masses (regardless of race) they'll make the Will Smith action flick.
For the (white) kids, they'll make the same kids' action movie or animated critter/object movie.
For the white girls, they'll make the same Disney stars' movie.
For the family they'll make the same lovable dog(s) movie.
For the black masses they'll make the same Snoop Dogg / Katt Williams shuck n buck or a Cedric the Entertainer + Queen Latifah/Mo'Nique Yo Man/MMm Chile movie.
For the black women, they'll make the same Madea / Morris Chestnut-Gabrielle Union movie. (in the 90s, it was the same Eddie Murphy/Bill Bellamy + Halle Berry movie with Robin Givens as the villain lol)
When they want a serious black drama, they make the same Lawrence Fishburn / Angela Bassett movie or a strugglin' in the hood with gangs & drugs movie.
When they want to show a serious movie with young black people, it's always a struggling in school movie***
When they want to show a movie with Hispanics it's always a drug lords / crawling 'cross the border / Mariachi singing type movie. That's why they pack their stuff on DVD.
When they want to show a movie with Asians, it's always a Jet Li / Jackie Chan karate choppin', broken Engwish type of movie.
***When white people want to pat themselves on the back, they release the "white teacher goes to the hood and straightens out the black/latino kids movie." It's about time for one of them to be release, I haven't seen one in a while.

Damn, and I've been an Eastwood Fan from way back when "Unforgiven" allowed Morgan Freeman to chuck home an Oscar for a role in a western that didn't have a brotha buck dancing or hollering "Where all de White Wimmen at?", but "Gran Torino" is beyond the pale and I can't support Eastwood's efforts.
Especially since he crossed the color line a few years ago when he married Dina Ruiz (she's African-American/Latina) - I'm wondering how the hell he felt it was time for him to play a flaming BIGOT?
Miranda
Let me understand this....you were conversating with someone who frightened you? Where you afraid of this person?
Elaine
Frightening in tow ways. First is intimidation, because he is very famous and written Pulizter plays and a few movies and a very mean person now. He used to be a liberal now he's gotten very right wing and super pro Israel. He seems indifferent to black people. Still, he's a giant in the business. Need more hints? (smile)

No, I don't. Black institutions don't survive unless we support them. Once we support them for many, many years, then they can go after corporate and foundation support (e.g., Alvin Ailey; DuSable Museum of African American History; the Southern [football] Classic).
He is a misanthrope. Let him stew in his misery alone. Folks out here are trying to have hope and do something different.

I saw that blogpost on WAOD. How can indie black filmakers get investors to make movies that DON"T have obligatory church clapping and "where's mah man at?" overtures?
Miranda
Investors HAVE supported indie black filmmakers...but they've also seen the return on that investment. Beloved, Eve's Bayou, Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored - great movies that very few actually paid to go to a theatre and see.

SLEDGE, Mississippi (CNN) -- James Presley stands amid chopped cotton, the thick Mississippi mud caked on his well-worn boots. A smile spreads across his face when he talks about voting for Barack Obama and what that might mean for generations to come. His voice picks up a notch. He holds his head up a bit higher.
"There's a heap of pride in voting for a black man," he says.
At 78, Presley is a legend of the past living in the present and now hopeful for the future. A grandson of slaves, he's one of the few men left in America so closely tied to his slave past, still farming cotton on the same land as his ancestors. He's picked cotton since he was just 6 years old.
He and his wife of 57 years, Eva May, raised 13 children and six grandchildren in a cypress-sided house in the middle of cotton fields in northwestern Mississippi. He was a sharecropper most his life, but rarely qualified for food stamps. His father died in 1935 when he was 5, and he had to step up and be the "Little Man" of the house, a nickname that has stuck seven decades later. He's lived a raw-knuckled life where hope moved at a molasses-slow pace. The last time he had hope for a better future was four decades ago -- first with President John F. Kennedy and then with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
Obama has changed everything to the poor in these parts.
"I'm a church man," he says. "And I kind of figured this here is about like it was with Moses with the children of Israel. On that day, when he gets to be president, we're all going to be rejoicing."
btw. the U.S. is a mixed-market economy with plenty of socialist policies that the majority of the U.S. population likes -- even normal "joe the plumber" type republicans.

Crossing the railroad tracks amid a new time in history
Excerpt: Let me tell you about Mary Dowden, an 80-year-old granddaughter of a slave. She told me that in the late 1960s she owed a local clinic $20. She started to walk through the front door, but it was slammed in her face. A white woman shouted mean, hateful things at her. Dowden wouldn't repeat the words to me, because she's too dignified.
But Dowden was determined to pay off her $20 debt by walking through the front door without breaking down in tears. She tried several times over the years, but each time she started to walk to the clinic the tears would start flowing.
It took four years. But she finally marched through the clinic's front door, her head held high, and paid her bill. There were no tears. That, my friends, is a portrait of courage and pride of an American hero.
And in a sign of just how complicated race relations are here, Dowden said that years later when the woman who slammed the door in her face died, she cried again. She had always liked the lady deep down inside.
Folks, this movie is the SHYTE. If I can get my husband to watch this movie, because he was a City of the God movie fan, and him go purchase the soundtrack...then this movie deserved every award thus far, sweeping the golden globes. It shows the true insight of poverty in India and emerges with hope. A must see movie.

OMG! I was just describing the movie to my sister-in-law via email and compared it to my favorite movie of all time, City of God.
Obama climate czar has socialist ties - …one of 14 leaders of a socialist group's Commission for a Sustainable World Society, which calls for "global governance" and says rich countries must shrink their economies to address climate change.
It’s amazing how stupid the Democratic Party’s supporters are. Apparently they actually believe that the Communist/Socialist (Socialism is only “one-step” from Communism) agenda of the Democratic Party is going to somehow help them out, i.e. that the Big Gov’t promoting Democratic Party is going to forcefully take from the “evil rich” and “evil Big Corporations” and give that money to them.
Problem is the Democratic Party is part of the World Socialism movement, and that movement eyes America as their main future source for funding, e.g. “rich countries must shrink their economies .” I have some bad news for the World Socialism movement: The Capitalists and Individualists – that the Communists/Socialists hate – have already started to shrink their businesses and investments since Obama was elected, and that shrinking is going to continue for quite some time.
BTW, for those who have never heard of the Ice Ages, “man-made” global warming is a hoax…

Why does anyone in television feel compelled to give that bitch* Coulter airtime? She cannot move the needle that much.
No idea -- I wonder too. Coulter adds nothing new -- she just puts offensive commentary on top of long-dead issues.
Conservatives are doing themselves a disservice by allowing the Coulter-Limbaugh types to continue to hold cache with their elites (the rank and file folks who actually vote don't seem to pay that much attention to coulter-limbaugh -- both of them where feverently anti-McCain).
Most of the time she is just offensive, without even bringing up interesting points. She got bitch-slapped on Huck-a-fraud over the weekend as well.
I hope that little girl's family gets a real live print of that photo. What a beautiful little girl she is and what a fantastic thing, to be held in Obama's arms as a little princess baby.

:) I saw it. LOL Sherri looked like she wanted to smack her. I have to make sure I get tickets to see her and Bill Maher going at it. Is anyone else from Chicago going to the Speaker Series? I'd love to meet with some people and discuss the Maher/Coulter match-up afterwards.
A New Circus Comes to Town - Is it too soon to talk about the failed Obama presidency just because Obama isn't president yet?
spirit_55z
Yes, it's the Republican Party, stil up to their DIRTY DEEDS with Coulter, Limbaugh, and Palin. The rethugs who DON'T GIVE ADMISSION TO POC TO COME UNDER THEIR CIRCUS TENTS.

How can we miss you if you won't go away?

Just made it "NEGATIVE" 453. The "POINTS" just keep piling DOWN!! Whew!! **shakin' my head***
The article's simply asking if Obama is the right person to corral all the various factions that have started to come up/out since his election.
It's a fair question, even if the writer is obviously partisan (though I don't mind his politics, I know most others here wouldn't. Not to mention the tinge of racism and sexism in the article). In all fairness, though, it's probably too early to give an answer.
MsKitty
I'm all for fair questions but Karmi never comes here to engage in a genuine dialogue, but just to taunt and pick fights. So he/she/it gets dealt with accordingly IMO.
SDEROT, Israel — Joe the Plumber has set aside his wrenches to become a rookie war correspondent, covering Israel's side of its two-week-old military offensive in Gaza.
The Ohio man, who rocketed to fame during the U.S. presidential campaign for asking Barack Obama about his tax plan, was in the southern Israeli town of Sderot on Sunday to tell readers of the conservative pjtv.com Web site about the rockets that rain down from the neighboring Gaza Strip.
The people of Sderot "can't do normal things day to day" like get soap in their eyes in the shower, for fear of rockets, said America's most famous plumber, whose real name is Samuel J. Wurzelbacher.
"I'm sure they're taking quick showers," he said. "I know I would."
Wurzelbacher's status as a rookie was evident when he stood in front of a pile of spent rockets and said: "I have thousands of questions but I can't think of the right one."

Well...Between less physically active lives, and the USDA allowing so much processed crap and hormones to be injected in farm animals that is no wonder we're in the shape we're in:
Top Army recruiter weighs fat camp for recruits
FORT JACKSON, S.C. — The Army has been dismissing so many overweight applicants that its top recruiter, trying to keep troop numbers up in wartime, is considering starting a fat farm to transform chubby trainees into svelte soldiers. Maj. Gen. Thomas Bostick, head of the Army Recruiting Command, said he wants to see a formal diet and fitness regimen running alongside a new school at Fort Jackson that helps aspiring troops earn their GEDs. Bostick told The Associated Press that obesity looms as "a bigger challenge for us in the years ahead" than any other problem that keeps young people from entering the military, including lack of a GED or high school diploma, misconduct or criminal behavior and other health issues such as eye or ear problems. According to Defense Department figures provided to the AP, over the past four years 47,447 potential recruits flunked induction physicals at the nation's 35 Military Entrance Processing Stations because they were overweight. http://www.ajc.com/news/content/shared-gen/ap/N...
Looking at the second document (quick scan), a lot of it is talking points. I would've prefered more (unclassified) details as to the "how" these things happened, because that's really going to drive whatever vindication takes place in history.
Something interesting: no mention of his signing of the post 9/11 GI Bill, which is probably the BIGGEST thing he's done for veterans in his term. Yes, a democrat (Webb) was mostly responsible for it, but Bush did sign the legislation. Missed opportunity there.
So, long/short....it doesn't appear to be much anyone hasn't heard before, which makes the title of that second one somewhat misleading.
More detailed read to follow.
Monie
In regards to the GI bill, Bush THREATENED to veto it prior to signing it---so as far as signing it into legislation, Bush, in my book, receives miniscule credit for that.
And then he had the nerve to mention the names of the likes of McCain and others who showed the starkest opposition to the bill, during the signing ceremony.
Yeah, but who besides you paid attention to that detail? ;)
GreenLadyHere
D: Thank you. :>)
BUT it is OBVIOUS that IFFF one was doing GOOD while IN OFFICE, enough of that would have factored in in order to stave off that "avalanche downfall in "approval" rating.
...but the flipside to that is the 110th Congress, led by two democrats, also had the lowest approval ratings in that organization's history.
Can we agree that, over at least the course of the last two years, neither the President or the Congress did that great of a job?
Mike H
The Congress didn't get much done because of the obstructionist Republicans. The Republicans set a RECORD for the most filibusters in a two year period.
Of course, someone would have to come and try and explain why the Congress' approval rating stunk.
Neither the Congress or the President did much for a majority of the country to be proud of over the last two years. End of story. Assign whatever reason you'd like, though I'm sure they'll all begin with "Republican" and end with "Bush."
GreenLadyHere
D: Just SHOW me the published data - ratings. :>) :>)
That's my problem with throwing around the "lowest approval ratings" statistic, cause both organizations-of late-did bad jobs.
And, if the start to the 111th is any indication, they might end up worse. You can't argue with/hold legislation from a popular sitting president and not expect to take some flack.

D:
Don't want ta quibble, BUT -Congress did NOT order/continue the WAR IN IRAQ.
"One brown man cooking pancakes. Two brown skinned teenaged girls eating pancakes at the other end of the kitchen island. One brown skinned woman reading the paper at the breakfast table. One brown skinned president elect on the TV droning on about his plans for America. And one brown haired dog staring up at all of us, hoping someone would give him a piece of sausage."
I loved it in its simplicity. You never fail to acknowledge our humanity, BrownMan. That's one of the reasons I love reading your blog.
MsKitty
Great commentary. I hate to pin so much on one man and his family, but I hope that seeing Obama as an example we can get over that "reading, striving for good grades = acting white" nonsense. Maybe it will be cool to be smart again.
Changing the subject, I hadn't seen Bill Cosby in awhile and I was shocked at how old he looks in that picture. I guess it's that disconnect where you don't expect your childhood icons to age, even if you're middle-aged yourself.
Justice58
Did you hear Bush...He never thought he'd see the day a black man become President?
goldenstar
He was in rare form for public review this morning. He is trying very very hard to come off as some normative human being. Think about it, he's being compared to Barack: a smart, sensible, compassionate human being who is black.
And, George Bush helped to spawn the conditions so we could end the nightmare.
GreenLadyHere
goldenstar: HEY! :>)
Watching he "ACT" this morning 2. Uh! Uh! Uh! **shakin' my head***
WHERE was THIS PERSON for the PAST 8 YEARS????
Additionally, he continues to be PERSON #1 this morning when he stated that he WAS NOT going to release the rest of the $350 Bil. UNTIL he was ASKED [TRANSLATE "BEGGED"] to do so. ARRRRGGGGG!!
"LEOPARDS - - - - SPOTS!" DON'T CHANGE!! :>)
MsKitty
And, George Bush helped to spawn the conditions so we could end the nightmare.
I was just saying to somebody recently that in a twisted sort of way we have Bush to thank for Obama becoming president. Think about it, Bush effed up this country so bad that having a black man running things didn't seem like such a bad idea to the majority of the country.
Myth
It has been Diving Providence since Obama ran for his first office. Nothing could have stopped it and the right circumstances were put into place which includes Bush's failed policies. Now we wait to see how the Lord uses him.

Oops! DIVINE PROVIDENCE I mean.

Myth, I was all ears when it came to his Katrina explanation. He. is. so. darn. weird.
Nevertheless, I do not think that Barbara Bush regrets this offspring. I think that he is most similar to her than some of the others. She is one mean and dissin' human being. I think that he picked up her worst traits and flung those on the American people.
And, don't forget her revealing comment about Katrina folks...
johnmulligan
Did you notice all of his errors were viewed as though from the perspective of a PR professional? The prob with katrina was that he shoud have landed, but if he had landed you gotcha media types would have been all over me for that instead... The image-based presidency reduced this man's horizons to a world of news clippings about his name. For a man who didn't care about criticism, it seems that that's as far as he could think.
Myth
I really agree with you. He would served himself better to have continued to stay out of the media's line of criticism. Now his last week in office there is going to be a discussion of what he said he did and the media revealing what actually was. BUT they might show pity on him and move on, everyone pretty much has Bush-fatigue.
Myth
I feel so sorry for Barbra Bush. Every mother wants her son to be successful. Watching this mornings news conference has had to bring tears to her eyes. Watching Dubba babble thru this news conference trying to defend his failed policies and grave mistakes has to hard.
Can you believe his only regret about Katrina was where to land Air Force One> OMG.
NMP
One of my best movie lines ever was from Anthony Hopkins in 'The Edge' when he says to Alex Baldwin's character, "never feel sorry for a man with a plane." Borrowing off of that, never feel sorry for a woman whose husband and son were Presidents of the United States, especially one who helped produce the babbling idiot.
rikyrah
LOL
MsKitty
I don't. George W. Bush is very much his mother's child, as far as the total lack of empathy and selfishness. To this day I still want to give that heifer a right hook over what she said about the Katrina survivors fleeing to Houston. Let her live with the shame.
spirit_55z
Ditto, MsKitty. And I'll give her a LEFT HOOK!

Co-Sign MsKitty! Here are her words:
""Almost everyone I've talked to said we're going to move to Houston. What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. (Said with concern.) Everybody is so overwhelmed by all the hospitality. And so many of the peoples in the arena here, you know, they're underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."
Too damn bad for Eric Holder. He prostituted himself for the Clintons signing off on a warrant for a man considered a traitor by the Jusice Department. It will not be saving grace to see him cop a plea and take the Clintons with him. It's what you get for playing w/ scorpions. As to political corruption under the Republicans I'm sure PE Obama can find a competent replacement with a lot cleaner
NMP
Eric Holder is not dirty, and he he WILL be confirmed.
whiterosebuddy
Holder is a good man. He will make an awesome AttyGen. There is not one professional out there who has not made an error in judgement. Holder is not the sum of his mistakes.
He is a man of strong integrity and he has apologized and said he regrets that he dropped the ball on that. He accepted accountability.
Holder brings far more in terms of his legal career to the table than that pardon.
He will make an excellent Atty General.
Arlen Spector can go jump...he was the one that let the Patriot Act pass with that mess about interim AG's being at the DOJ in perpetuity without ever having to be confirmed. Which is how Rove and them politicized the DOJ and prosecuted opposing party opponents like the Governor in AL as well as firing Inglesias. Not to mention slotted all these incompetent ATTy Gen's all over the country with degrees from that religious college that Ashcroft taught. It was jsut a disgrace.
So, Spector has no ground to stand on. With him at the held the entire DOJ was practically dismantled and there was pervasive injustice and selective prosecution to disenfranchise voters with the claim of 'voter fraud' which was nothing more than a vile attempt to steal votes.
Denise
He is a man of strong integrity ...Holder brings far more in terms of his legal career to the table than that pardon.
He will make an excellent Atty General.
I have followed his career over the years, beginning with his appointment to the DC Superior Court back when I - as the only black person on staff - worked for a small general law practice.
I feel very strongly that he knows this appointment is not about Eric Holder; it's about service to our country. So I agree he'll make an excellent AG.
Robert M
Look I argue all the time part of being part of America is being able to make the same mistakes, have the same sins, et al as the majority but you have to pay for them too. Eric Holder goes beyond the pale. He deliberately chose not to do his job. It was nonfeasance to hide the Clintons malfeasance of selling pardons. There is no difference between the Clintons and Blago. Each has the authority and legal power to do what they did. The Clinton's unlike Blago were overrode the law to give the traitor Rich a pardon. Now everyone whom is screaming for the Clinton's head at the hearing for Sec of State is going to receive a preview of it but chooses to look the other way for Eric Holder. I think analytic thinking has bolted on this issue if you think you can separate these issues.
Miranda
You've mentioned the Rich pardon, but what are your other oppositions to Holder?
Denise
actually, I've never condemned the Clinton nomination.
Call me naive, but I think the PE has given the Clintons an opportunity for public service that will, among other things, help clean up Bill's legacy.
The rest is up to them.
RobM
I do not think you're naive. I just do not believe in redemption for people whom have proved at every turn they will do anything to benefit them selves without regard to ideology or moral considerations or at anyone expense. Bill Clinton could have gotten a blow job from any number of women whom would have kept their mouths shut to the public or friends reveling in what ever got them off about it. Hilliary could have walked out the door but choose instead to enable Bill and trash the very women feminism was designed to empower the most. Eric Holder works for a man whom trashes his own Presidency and then enables that man through nonfeasance to pardon a traitor for 12 pieces of silver and now he is chosen for AG. If they want redemption let them spend their own resources to achieve it not the countries.
Denise
All this intrigue reminds me of a couple of life rules my Dad (thankfully) shared with me.
The first is, "you will be surprised at the enemies you keep." In other words, sometimes your enemies are the very people who present themselves as your friends - just to clock your every move.
The other is, " "you'll be surprised at where your competition is coming from." This means that sometimes, without your knowledge, you're perceived as a threat by others for stuff you're not even aware of. Sadly, this often comes from the most unlikely of places, like people you who don't even register on your radar, and about things you don't even care about. LOL
That said, the high stakes game the PE is playing is much deeper than a potential professional rivalry by the Clintons. I'm sure he already knows this.
I know we all know this, but I just wanted to put it out there.
Denise
I hear you, Robert.
Let's see how this turns out. The PE has passed ball into someone else's court ... and urrybody is grown ;-)
Admiral_Komack
"Bill Clinton could have gotten a blow job from any number of women whom would have kept their mouths shut to the public or friends reveling in what ever got them off about it."
-Of course, if those women had kept their mouths shut, Bill Clinton would never have gotten a blow job.
I just finished reading a great "fill in the blanks" review of "Not Easily Broken" at What About Our Daughters: http://tinyurl.com/92qrsc
"Folks the damage Tyler Perry has done to Black cinema is unparalleled. It cannot be quantified. When you go to a movie and are just happy if the actors manage to make it through without becoming caricatures and give bonus points for no guns, no cross dressing, and no Ebonics, then we have truly reached a new low as we hurl towards the abyss."
I couldn't agree more!
Also: I have a new post up - "Frodo, Prejudism, and 'Flight of the Conchords'" http://tinyurl.com/9um7w4
librarian
While I am not that big a fan of Tyler Perry movies (for different reasons-I think there is so much potential to tell about our stories, and Mr. Perry does not take advantage of that potential.) I do, however, give him credit for providing a different look at our lives than so many of the movies that have Black casts in which criminal activities are glorified.
However, here is a link from today's NY Times about Black directors looking beyond their niche. In addition to Spike Lee and Tyler Perry, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Darnell Martin are also discussed.
I think her issue is that it is getting to the point where all of these movies seem to follow the same predictable plot points, same characters, and the same messages. Wouldn't it be nice to have a little more variety and wider range of perspectives? Perhaps there are other ways to approach the problems with black relationships, single-parent families, domestic abuse, etc. That's why I appreciated the post - plus her "fill in the blanks" were funny....
Sepia
In order to that, more of US need to be in positions to greenlight and distribute films. Until then, we're at their mercy.
whiterosebuddy
OIC...yes, it would be nice. I did not go to the link..let me go see it.
Variety is nice .it's just that I think he uses a formula just like they do for teen movies like LegallyBlonde and 10WaystoLoseAGuy and the reason is because it is profitable.
Folks like feel good movies without too much sex, or violence but very relationship oriented and fun. That is the hook and people pay to see that. A little humor and wit go a long way to making an afternoon of cinematherapy worth it.
yes, she is!!....those little tubby cheeks and cute in pink ...just wonderful...and bright eyes all full of intelligence, on the video..Obama says something and she turns and looks him right in the eye!!

That picture melted my heart, she is an absolute doll, I'm sure she'll treasure that picture when she gets older....
Oh man.... I'm reeling over this picture. Would you look at that. Thanks for posting this, rikyrah. Oh my God - how can I get a picture of Obama holding my baby?!?! At a few hundred dollars a photo, we could eliminate the national debt....
