Just mentioning the fact that bail-outs do exist (as outlined in section 4). As far as I can tell, this bail-out provision also applies to section 5.

In fact, I had a conversation with Miranda yesterday where I expressed that I'd prefer to expand the section 5 provision to include more states -- especially since some of the most troubling instances of voter suppression have taken place in the north as of late.

But if a jurisdiction can apply for a bail-out I see no reason why a court challenge such as this is even necessary. That's why this news is particularly troublesome. It's an overly aggressive move by the petitioner when it appears that alternative avenues are available (not saying that I support such alternatives, but the law has safety measures to handle things like this).

But it's important that we keep an eye on stuff like this. Oddly enough, conservatives might begin to look towards the Supreme Court more often (5-4 conservative lean) now that they've lost control of the House, Senate and Executive branch. I just saw that there's another challenge that the Court's going to hear involving a so-called "equal treatment" standard -- which looks like just another way to attack affirmative action.

“Unlike you, B-serious, I do not think there should be a way to get off pre-clearance status..”

Never said I supported any bail-outs. It will be as pervasive in the north as well, where re-districting has made us have less political power as black politicians primarily represent minoritymajority districts...ugh.

POC will need to be forever vigilante and the Justice Dept will need to have the power to force those states to remain in line.

Great write up, Dna.

The more things change the more they remain the same
.
The entire reason there were so many restrictive voting laws is so that the Democratic Racist party would remain in power in the South. The battle of principalities has begun once again.

“But of course if you came to John Roberts and told him that a black man had been shot by police while lying face down and restrained on the pavement he’d find it really offensive that you mentioned the man was black. “

That's my favorite line. Out here in the Bay area, a lot of the people who speak ill of the case will say, “Why does it matter that he's black?” I'm over the ignorance as of the day I was born.

This is predictable modern racism in a fancy new hat. One of my biggest fears was that people would use the recent election as a guise to undo so much progress – and by progress, I don't mean the holding of hands and chanting “Yes We Can” with people of different races. I'm glad we're discussing this now so that we don't get caught flat-footed when they hear the case in April.

It's nice to get a couple of posts up on the subject. The more information, the beter. dna's information on the Congressional investigations helps a lot. I hope our posts generate more discussion.

Stay tuned. This doesn't pass the smell test.

No problem.
