And how many Black men were killed at the hands of other Black men before President Obama was inaugurated? Far more than two. My concern is not our worth to white folks, but our worth to each other. If the election of President Obama increases the self-worth of young Black men, then it is mission accomplished.

An historic event doesn't negate a history that spans centuries. Let's be clear that the rhetoric this entire political season has been fraught with people who want gratitude for voting for the black guy. We all heard it. Every move that Obama made during his transition was subject to scrutiny and cries of betrayal at certain points and all of us know or should know that the stakes for Obama are higher than for any other President in history. So, Obama's win does not nullify racism or bigotry or homophobia or sexism, but it does represent a significant paradigm shift and it temporarily allows white people to believe that racism is over. For me, I hope that the biggest shift will be behavioral and attitudinal shifts in black folks. Maybe now more black children and black parents will see the benefit of a first rate education and hard work, and will eschew their desire to be the next Lebron James, Scarface, or TI and aspire to be like Michelle Obama or Valerie Jarrett not to mention Barack. It is time for black people to get over the victim complex that has held us down for decades. And I say decades because if you study the proud history of black people in America, the foolishness that goes on now would have been inconceivable and unacceptable fifty years ago. I'm not promoting the concept of uplift to the exclusion of reality but let's face it, the things we have embraced as a people over the last few years is ridiculous. We've allowed our youth to revel in music that extols the virtues of violence and promiscuity, we've allowed our women to be referred to as female dogs and whores, and we have ignored the skyrocketing incidence of HIV/AIDS in our community. We went from being a community that strived to achieve to one that is suspicious of education and advancement (remember the suspicion that Obama was met with from black people early in his candidacy). Obama resonates with so many professional blacks because we know that even when we get that partnership or that promotion, the struggle continues. We know that we have to be smarter, better, and more prepared than our white counterparts. We just do. I think that one of the biggest mistakes that black people make is looking to white people for the answers and for deliverance from the evil of racism. No matter what BS they threw at Obama (and they threw some) he was ready. He didn't raise his voice, he didn't get angry, he got busy. He never made the same mistake twice and he didn't allow anyone to define him or his possibilities. That is change we can believe in. I remember all of that coded speech by the Clintonistas about how Obama couldn't win (wink, wink) and Obama scoffed at the notion and went back to work. That is the lesson. It's not the end of racism as an institution, but it should be the end of racism dictating to black folks what our possibilities are. It's not about how racists see us or about racist institutions, it's about how we see ourselves and about how dedicated we are to securing our futures regardless of white resistance. Obama's election doesn't mean that there will never be an incidence of racial violence but perhaps it means that if it happens in the future we won't resort to the failed tactics of the past like rioting and destroying our own neighborhoods. And maybe, the next time an incident of violence occurs and the perpetrator is not a white cop but a neighborhood thug we will be as offended by that act of violence and endeavor to do something about it. To reiterate what Obama said, we've got work to do and I hope that his election motivates us to get it done and to move forward. That is what the white supremacists and racists fear most: the psychological effect of an Obama Presidency on the psyche of black Americans.

TRW, you like many people are suffering from too much mainstream history. Have you studied the legacy of King outside of the "I Have a Dream" speech? Do you know enough about him outside of what you constantly hear?

I am asking you this to give you credit but in my opinion, you do not.

Please look up King's

"The Other America" speech and look at what he was tackling after 1965....the years that the media blocked out.

You also make a big mistake:

"I have heard the whispers that Black people need to be on their guard because of the surge in White supremacy, but in my mind, you have a greater chance being hurt or killed by another Black person--not a Klan member. So why don't we focus on that? "

Why do you equate the term white supremacy with the KKK, do you not understand how this ideology manifests itself on a global scale?

Colbert I King wrote about my favorite bete blanc, in fact both of them. Included is more on what is being discussed:http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/23/AR2009012303129.html?hpid=opinionsbox1

The one thing that has changed is that the tide is in our favor. Hatred and Intolerance are taught behaviors easily reinforced my the behavior outside the home. Much of that behavior is pure ignorance. Ignorance is about to become very much out of vogue(and after 8 years ....). We have already seen it's comeuppance as everyone couldn't wait to tell what Rev Lowery's statement really meant(But please keep your ass out he barber and beauty shop{:-)).

This is for those whom might despair

Mother to Son

Well, son, I'll tell you:
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor—
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So, boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps.
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now—
For I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin',
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

Langston Hughes

That's the most ridiculously asinine shit I've seen in like ... thirty minutes! *lol*

If people are so outraged, stop going to the bakery. Like the one man that said, the baker spews this on a daily basis ... "I thought, why the fuck do you still go there?"

So true.

You know, one of the things about our history is that Jim Crow era segregation/discrimination was widely accepted both both Blacks and Whites in this country. And I don't say that to say that Blacks during that era enjoyed the hardships they faced, but if we are honest with ourselves, for the greater first portion of the 20th century, both Blacks and Whites accepted it as the "way things were."

Now when the movement ignited, and many of our unsung hereos in the Civil Rights movement began to rally and challenge the "accepted " way of life of segregation had created, only then did we get the legislation we needed to ban the symbols of discrimination like "colored" water fountains, segregated schools, and

But the attitudes of many still did not change....Dr. King himself was assassinated AFTER LBJ signed the Voting Rights Act.

Discrimination was just not "sanctioned" or accepted by the US anymore after the Civil Rights movement. But it sure the hell ain't disappear. And even today the lines of discrimination/racism can be blurred, especailly when we are dealing with it in our courts.

Even now Obama's critics do not understand "why" he would want to close Gitmo...many saying he is too hasty. This is the beginning of another movement, a restoration. No longer can we allow leaders who claim we stand for "freedom", yet take away our civil liberties or stomp on the Constitution in an effort to go after others who could care less. None of us can predict the future....but I have to say I am so happy to have a President who knows the Consitution and laws tha govern us.

I was always taught that when you have to become something else outside what is pure and good about you, in order to fight the enemy, you have then handed the enemy a victory.

Love your perspective, and I'm definitely feeling more victorious than not. I was part of a panel of young folks who gathered just after the inauguration for a conversation filmed by bet.com. I'm inspired, and things have most definitely changed. I don't think it's hit any of us completely just yet
