Entering the front door of the White House via the front door. . . . . tears finally
Miranda
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Ann Nixon Cooper craned her neck and leaned her head forward. On the television set across the room, Barack Obama moved forward and put his hand on the Bible. Ann Nixon Cooper, 107, watched the inauguration from her Atlanta home: "I'm most excited."
At 107 years old, Cooper said she always believed she might live to see a black man sworn in as president of the United States.
"I had that in mind all the time -- all the time -- hoping for a great change that would happen in my day," she said, a charm necklace with a gold "107" around her neck. "I was hoping that it would happen in my time." This moment in history, she said, marks one of the greatest days of her event-filled life. "I'm most excited about it ... just nothing but the greatest," she said, a wide smile spread across her face. "Our new president means nothing but more freedom as a human being. That's all. That's all it could mean to us. You feel more like a real person.
Welcome to a new day, a new president, and a new era. Today feels like a long cool drink after eight years wandering in the desert.
As many of you will be watching this historic event, whether on your TV, or online, or with a group, or in person, here is an open thread so we can all pour out our hearts and our hopes together. I’ve had a periodic thought flicker through my brain, where I wonder for a moment what I’d be feeling now if the election had turned out differently. And then I pluck out the thought and squish it like putting out a cigarette with your foot.
Today is a day for joy, and optimism. So, I’m going to try really hard to post only happy things today, in honor of the hopeful and historic day that it will be. We will all, in one way or another, be able to say “we were there.”
It isn’t often in politics that we’re able to celebrate in this way. And I’m sure as the weeks, months and years go by, we will all have disappointments, and unfulfilled expectations, and things we wished would have turned out differently. But for one day, I’m peeling off my layer of cynicism, to enjoy the unfettered freedom of being an unapologetic idealist. Because, no matter what happens, it will be better than what has been.
So, take a mental day off. Smile and cry. Hope.
Look at those COMMENTS! FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD!! :>) :>)
MUDFLATS is continuing to ADVANCE "THE MOVEMENT"- - World-wide!! :>) :>) Whooo! Hooo!
Val
Chris Matthews current count 2 million people attended the inauguration today.
It was actually a lot more than that. They are not even counting the folks who were turned away etc.
Val
I really like the new Whitehouse.gove website. Check it out when you can.
Looking for Newspaper headlines from overseas and America about today. I know it's early for America, but not the overseas papers.
Val
Hey Rikyrah - I have a lot of pics of the crowds on the metro and getting to and from the event. I will send them to you as soon as my feet stops hurting and I pull myself together (tired). LOL
Miranda
HEY!!! Isn't that FAMU's band going by?!?!? GOOOO RATTLERS!!
Honey01
Yeah! HBCU's representing.
Jessie White Tumblers (Chi-Town) repesenting!
Miranda
I was screaming into my TV set to the lil girls at Dunbar High to tone that shakin and shimmyin down! LOL
Honey01
Miranda I was screaming too! I was thinking "is there not an adult that reviews their routines".
I almost posted a similar comment . I was not sure if I was just being overly sensitive in my criticism. We all know how Black women can be portrayed as being oversexualized.
I need a nap.
Justice58
Honey,
You know that portrayal was started back in slavery when white men were having their way with black women & then afterwards called them loose to in order to please the white woman! Ugh.
I want that photo! Wow and what a bit of info, that President Obama was the first to walk the outgoing President to their vehicle.
He's a true class act.
Honey01
On a shallow note,
Props to Michelle and Jill walking in heels (even if not very far).
Jill's boots are bangin'
Against Race Politics
You know they say Beyonce REFUSED to walk in her heels! Reportedly the secret service gave her a ride down the closed street after the police refused!
Val
shoot. I wouldn't either. Many potholes. The crowds were thick. I don't blame her. It was silly to sacrifice comfort for style though if you know you have to walk long distances.
Against Race Politics
I thought Jill looked very stylish/cute.
GreenLadyHere
Honey01: That's NOT shallow! :>) :>)
That's ON THE REAL - - - FOR REAL!! :>) :>) :>) We KNOW!! :>) :>)
Heels are a SACRIFICE to the 'CAUSE - - - Whereva we go!! :>) :>)
Can you imagine what PRESIDENT OBAMA, FIRST LADY MICHELLE< VP BIDEN and Dr. Biden were thinkin'! :>) :>) :>)

It's almost 4pm. The Stock Market measured by the S&P500 is down 6%. Major Bankstocks are down over 20%. Stock Markets around the world are down 3 to 4% having started yesterday. This is Bush's real legacy;Economic collapse. By countless acts of nonfeasance(that is enforcing the rules for banks, mortgage companies, brokerage houses, for Investment advisors, the Constitution) the world wide economy is contracting at a pace unheard of since the boom and bust days of gold towns. That Bush believes history will be kinder is total cognitive dissonance. He believes this because there has not been an attack on the USA since Sept 11, 2001. It simply doesn't follow that because there hasn't been one your actions are responsible. Given that AQ first attacked the WTC in Feb 1993 and the second 8+ years later they are prepared to wait to do the spectactular.
I belie' HE's got HIS SWAGGA ON as he's strollin' down the street! :>) :>)
YEAH! YOU DA MAN!! :>)
FIRST LADY IS JUST BEAUTIFUL!!! :>) :>)
jwarren.
The nah nah nah was a sign of a classless bunch who'd do the same to any President they disagreed with. They should be ashamed. Maybe if they remembered that we haven't had another attack on US soil do, in no small part, to the policies of the Bush administration, maybe they would've behaved better, all though there is no accounting for a lack of "home training."

Sepia
No more classless than lying about WMDs in order to send thousands off to die just so you could fill your bank account.
I seem to remember Chris "Tweety" Matthews calling Bush and family the Romanovs, after the Russian imperial family that was shot to death in 1917 by the Bolsheviki.
Even Keith Olbermann seemed to think that was a bit much.
Besides it was better than loosing a lot of expletive deleteds and gesturing with the finger.
Lilytiger
They could have been chanting "off with his head" as other revolutionaries have in the past.
I think the song was light hearted.
Val
Did you all hear the boos when Bush took the stage? It was so bad I felt sorry for the man. Then not only did the crowd boo LOUDLY they started singing "nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah nah hey hey hey good bye.
It was terrible LOL
spirit_55z
Hey, Val. Did you sing too?
Look at the photo on this thread. It's got to be the most beautiful site. I printed it out and posted it on my computer here at work!
Val
no. I am too soft hearted for that. The man was already down so what was the point in kicking him? Bush can't help who he is and the majority of the people in American voted him in twice knowing who he is . . .so . . . It was really bad Spirit.
They could have cut him some slack for the final 30 minutes.
Honey01
That's what I was thinking too.
I understand the sentiment, but not a good look.
GreenLadyHere
Honey01: Co-sign!!
Val
Hey Yall. I just got back home from the inauguration.
apparently President Obama was the FIRST new president to walk the former president to the car - the first! A small gesture of common decency - but I think it is telling that he is hte first to do so.
Good riddance indeed - but we should also all now focus on the future and what we can do to play our parts!
Miranda
GOOD MANNERS. President Obama walking the former prez to his limo.....First Lady Obama presenting the outgoing First Lady with a gift....just GOOD MANNERS.
Shame that the Bushes don't countenance good manners at all.
Especially with the Bushes cattily allowing the former Aussie PM to occupy Blair House until the last five days of Bush in office, costing the taxpayers more money.
I hope we've seen the last of these people.
rikyrah
Ok, here's an Obama product that must make you LOL.
Okay, folks just need to stop now. I like how they have two kinds: Happy Obama and Determined Obama.
spirit_55z
ROTFLMAO!!!!
OK, I want one.
Charlene
Congrats - we heard you this morning on CBC Radio 1!
Miranda
So basically, Pepsi has completely lifted the logo and catchphrase of the Obama campaign....well if they can, then the bootleg guy down in the West End can too.
Nate_Wesley
I don't see how anyone says the Pepsi globe and the Obama 'O' logo look anything alike. I just don't get it, and I certainly don't see it.
Justice58
Isn't it the Pointer Sisters song, "Yes We Can Can"?
Thanks for posting. That originally aired during TNT's annual slate of NBA games on MLK day.
And with that being posted on SI's Fan Nation, naturally you had a few idiots comment on it, for which I happily corrected them (a few guesses toward my username).
Miranda
Ummmmm......howza bout......Blazerunit?? LMAO!!
Thanks for schooling that lil young naive child, I would not have been as kind as you were.
Nate_Wesley
Well, he replied with some more naivety--and I had to go a little hard than the first time. I doubt he'll understand it, though.
Medical Emergency: Ted Kennedy taken from the luncheon on stretcher?
Nate_Wesley
CNN (2:00 CT) confirming Ted Kennedy, and also saying Senator Robert Byrd is being attended to by medics as well.
Honey01
I just saw on CNN Senator Byrd is fine.
Miranda
I'm seeing it now.
spirit_55z
what is happening? They're dropping like flies
GreenLadyHere
spirit: Byrd: In his 90's. Kennedy: Existing condition. Just one of those things. :>) ***sigh***
PRAYING for BOTH/Families! :>) :>)
Honey01
Teddy, be well.
Oaktown Girl
Over at Kos some folks who don't understand the context of Lowery's comment about race are bent out of shape. I presume they are young and White and have never heard the "If you're Black get back...if you're White, you're alright" saying. I gently tried to explain it to one person, but she's still totally bent. about it and feels White people are being "bashed", etc.
It seems like it's much harder these days to discuss White Privilege with White people than it was before when the "Whites Only" signs were up and visible. Many young White people figure everything is just fine, so the rest of us should just STFU about it.
GreenLadyHere
Oaktown Girl: HEY! :>)
IMHO: Those who need the explaining appear to want any discussions/references to THEIR privilege to JUST GO AWAY.
But as my pastor says- - It's TRUE anyway! :>) :>)
Why does one of my friends say at her job, in their dept they have the conservative talk radio station on and people are cracking up at the meltdowns. She said everyone is laughing like they're watching Martin and Gina.
spirit_55z
LOL!!! OUT WITH THE OLD, AND IN WITH THE NEW!
Nate_Wesley
Bubba and his sons/nephews are all probably calling in and are like "what is we gonna do now?!?"
Seriously, CNN & MSNBC dragged out Bill Bennett and Pat Buchanan to share their thoughts. Wasn't hearing their garbage, and turned it back to C-SPAN. Where they had a woman call in on the Republican line mad that Obama mentioned the Muslim world, but 'slapped Israel in the face' by not mentioning them specifically.
Not trying to hear their crap today, so kudos to those who could laugh at it.
rikyrah
I have to admit, I cracked up with I heard Pat Buchanan call him PRESIDENT Obama. He looked like he was having a ' bit' of trouble with it, but, once again, Pat respected the speech.
I haven't dared look at Fox today.
spirit_55z
Sean Hannity's probably besides himself. BWA HAAAAAA!
Miranda
Probably bout to cry.
rorysmomma
high blood pressure medication is most certainly going to be prescribed for quite a few of these folks or else they are gonna stroke out.
scroll down - its further down on the page, but the video immediately comes up

Yizhak and Yo-Yo were nice. Right on Lincoln "Good Riddance." Missed earlier thread. I watched with co-workers. A few tears among the Senior Partners. Surprised. Maybe my firm really does celebrate diversity.

Someone recommended Marc Ambinder's analysis of the President's Speech in another thread.
