Most Americans have no knowledge of intelligence programs and are hardly capable of saying if someone would be good or not. But everyone is entitled to an opinion. Like I've said in my own post I liken the CIA to my time in the military (half of which was in an intelligence unit) - A CIA director is more of a politician. They manage, they defend their people and they get the money so they can do their jobs. The last thing an experienced foot soldier wants is some little suit standing over their shoulder micromanaging. Sir, ma'am--just keep those dumbass politicians (on both sides of the aisle) away from me so I can do my job.

Behind closed doors I think Feinstein got the "we dont give a damn what you think" reality check.....hence the attitude adjustment and the pursed lipped "I look forward to speaking with Mr. Panetta."

So a non-spook gets tapped to run the biggest spook-agency in the world. If he wasn't white would people be howling about how un-qualified he was? The no torture background is a nice change but it's the antithesis of the creation and history of the agency. This offers NO guarantee that those tactics won't be used. They're just going to go back to be secretive about it - and perhaps a little more selective.

Panetta has no intelligence experience. Though, folks say that's why he was chosen. He doesn't believe in torture...I think it's sort of pathetic that I'm willing to go ok to someone with no intelligence experience, because it's hard to find someone whose hands are tainted with torture.

how this country has fallen.

Obama's CIA pick unlikely to face Senate challenge

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALe...

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Barack Obama is defending his unexpected CIA nominee Leon Panetta, who faced a surge of skepticism in Congress on Tuesday but is not expected to draw serious opposition when his confirmation reaches the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Obama called Feinstein and apologized Tuesday, her office confirmed. In a separate statement, Feinstein noted that she had been called by both Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden, but she expressed no support for Panetta, a fellow California political veteran.

"They have explained to me the reasons why they believe Leon Panetta is the best candidate for CIA director," Feinstein said, adding only that she looked forward to "speaking with Mr. Panetta about the critical issues facing the intelligence community and his plans to address them."

Meeting with reporters in the U.S. Capitol Tuesday, Biden said the Obama team made a "mistake" in not consulting with top Senate officials before choosing Panetta. Biden said the lapse was a process mistake, but he praised the selection of Panetta, calling the Californian a "strong figure" for the CIA who would "take it on a new path."

A New Path...Meaning Bush's Policies Are Over!

“They have explained to me the reasons why they believe Leon Panetta is the best candidate for CIA director,” Feinstein said, adding only that she looked forward to “speaking with Mr. Panetta about the critical issues facing the intelligence community and his plans to address them.”

Meeting with reporters in the U.S. Capitol Tuesday, Biden said the Obama team made a “mistake” in not consulting with top Senate officials before choosing Panetta. Biden said the lapse was a process mistake, but he praised the selection of Panetta, calling the Californian a “strong figure” for the CIA who would “take it on a new path.”
