I am conflicted like many of you.

I worry about the Obama's safety and I want him to have a top notch detail.
On the other hand, I understand his attempt at mantaining some sense of normalcy for himself and his family.

As far as the media, they can kick rocks. They seem to believe they "own" Obama, his every thought, note, etc. I don't know if this is precedented or if it just that I am more tuned in. I just don't recall the media's fascination in reporting what Bush ate, how many times he went to the restroom, etc.

Thanks for making my earlier point, but better. My conclusion is still different, however. No BB. It's like smoking – not having it doesn't remove the risk, but it does greatly reduce it.
Lots of folks want BO to get what he wants cause they love him. I want him to be as protected (physically. politically and legally) as possible because I do.

Well reasoned. I'd even wonder about phone calls! Obama is more disciplined the Clinton, and (for better or worse) seems to have trouble with bald-faced lies or distortions.

Clinton is like Romney and Fiorina -- just able to sit there and lie completely.

Additionally, it would be a national security risk, I'd worry about RIM security.

Part of me wants BHO to get to keep his BB because he is, well, Obama, so I want him to get what he wants (including a ciggie every now and then for heaven's sake). However I do somewhat buy the security issue plus . . . the legal hassles are REAL. It's not just the president records act or whatever. It's the subpoena power. Right now we have a relatively compliant Congress, OK. In the Clinton years, when my DH was in the WH counsel's office, the rule was: no email. No notes. NOTHING. It will cost you in legal fees. One of our friends refused even to talk in meetings where notes were taken. Result: he was never subpoenaed. Please don't rise up en masse and say BHO is not Clinton. Of course he's not. And heaven willing he will retain his majorities. But things can get ugly fast and on pretext. Suddenly that flip email that made so much sense in context seems profoundly stupid/insulting/whatever. It may be for the best for him that he give it up, for reasons we can't really see right now but will be painfully obvious in hindsight. Yet my respect for the guy is such that I still come out on the side of letting him keep it . . . even if my better judgment says he's better off making phone calls.

What happened to him having a Technology Secretary/Zar/someothertitle on his team? I would think they'd be able to come up with something between his team and the NSA or somebody. What does the head of the CIA and dem us? I know they're not walking around with an entourage to whisper in his ear when he needs to know something.

I understand what you're saying BUT I disagree. Should the PE not use regular email communication with his friends? Not sure if they snatch that freedom away from him but just as easily an email account can be hacked. I am sure the government, if not already, can create a secure line that he can use his BB on.

I'm a new poster so you won't find any posting history from me, but I am not tring to tr0ll or anything. I guess I have a different perspective from most other people because I see the 'bubble' as not so much preventing the Prez from contacting other people but preventing other people who mean him harm, from contacting him.

As someone who always thinks of worst case scenarios first, I have to imagine that security is a 2 way street. It's not enough to make sure that the outgoing (BO's) communications are secure, but then we would have to make sure that all incoming communications are secure too. I am in no way a tecchie, but I imagine that would include putting all his friends on the same secure server and preventing them from forwarding emails, urls, weblinks, photos, attachments etc. This would negate the point of the communication in large part wouldn't it? I imagine a large part of using the BB is to do this, otherwise just telephone.

Imagine that an enemy of BO were able to get into one of his friends' BB and make mischief? They could send a message that looks innocent on its face that could eventually be misinterpreted and used against him. It won't matter if it's true or not, people will have doubts and that alone is enough to cause him a world of unnecessary headaches. If I get a message from my friend's account, I'm gonna assume that it is coming from them, not a hacker trying to get me in trouble. What if the hacker succeeds? Imagine how they could make an innocent exchange look.

No, I'm sorry. As much as I would love him to keep the BB, I second the above suggestions that he is MUCH better off using goverment communications and not a commercial application. As I said before, I am not a security expert (or even a BB user) but I can foresee it being safer FOR BO to not open himself to the risks of shenanigans from others.

How do you make air secure? You don't. You use encryption to limit the ability of the data being decoded.

I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say landline dedicated.

A landline has a physical wire that runs from the phone to a CO then out again to another endpoint via a physical wire. Air Force One does not use land lines. Chances are that not only do they use encryption but they use a completely different frequency for communications then public carriers.
