I was reading the comments from Ta-Nehisi's blog. One of the posters said Contreras was known as Dominican Mike for those in the know. Let me tell you, a year ago I read this piece about hair and skin politics among Dominicans, and barrother, these people have some self-hatred problems that Junot Diaz only scratched the surface in his short story collection, Drown.

The darkest and most African-looking Dominican thinks he's a white guy (SMH). And they use straighteners and skin lighteners like mad.
