Valerie Jarrett, a longtime friend of President Obama's and a senior adviser in the White House, will attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on behalf of America's new president, an administration official said Friday.
The annual event draws the richest business leaders from around the world. This year, the discussion is all-but certain to focus on the deterioration of the global economy.
Two other top Obama aides -- National Security Adviser James Jones and economic adviser Lawrence Summers -- had been planning to attend. But the administration official said the pair will stay in Washington to attend to current issues.
"Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to the president who is in touch each day with elected officials, business and community leaders across the nation about the economic challenges they face, will represent the administration at Davos," the official said. "Mr. Summers and General Jones will remain in Washington to advise the President on the near-term issues he must address."
Participation in the five-day meeting is by invitation only, and also draws the political and intellectual elite.

Interesting how AOL pointed out the BLACK ministers who were upset. How much you wanna bet these are the same black ministers who were down with Bush back in '04?
TRW
Not only that...I have read several post-campaign stories where several Black ministers requested "funds" to get volunteers for the Obama campaign, and Obama balked. He basically said thanks but not thanks--- people need to keep their eyes open, just because people call themselves Christian doesn't always mean that they are right.
The first pic with the two of them is the cutest. She's wearing his jacket to keep warm. Isn't he such a gentleman? *sighs* Reminds me of my hubby. Michelle's a lucky lady. :o)

I know-------Dang, they make me feel good inside just watching them and seeing the love they have for each other. Role models indeed.
Snippet: "The son of an African immigrant picks up a sonority of speaking from the descendants of slaves brought here from Africa centuries before--and then uses it to help seduce a nation full of descendants of slaveholders into making him their master. Linguistically as in so many ways, Obama embodies the extent to which we are all more "fellow citizens"--as he opened his oration--than we might think."
Hmm.... interesting read.
spirit_55z
I've never heard of this McWorter dude. This article was a bunch of drivel. Honestly, who is he and who reads this nonsense?
Was he trying to convince the folks who claim Barack isn't BLACK that he really is BLACK?
He should have just started and ended with CALL AND RESPONSE.
I really don't know how to verbalize my contempt right now for John McWhorter and that diatribe. I admit I read the excerpt you posted first so I already had an attitude...but when I started reading, I thought historically he had some merit and actually forgot about that excerpt.....I was right there agreeing with the syntax and tone so prevalent in black oratory...........by the time he led me down that path and I realized I'd let my defenses down, it was too late, when the insult hit me I didn't duck.....straight in the kisser.........I'll be damned.
McWhorter has a PhD in linguistics, right? Yet his article totally overlooks the greatest factor regarding someone's dialect/accent--it's the person's environment--where they are nurtured and immersed.
So *O*s pronunciations ending in an "ih" sound may not be West African. They could just as easily be Samoan...or Indonesian for that matter.
Do we criticize white politicians such as Al Gore or Hillary Clinton when they come into southern AA churches, and start sounding like they are...black? No, they get extra credit for trying to sound like AA preachers.
I don't think that McWhorter was attacking *O* for being "multilingual." Our President has skills--I'd rather have a President who can utilitze multiple dialects rather than a cracka who only knows saltine-nese.
Justice58
Saltine-nese, Webb?

I'll have to admit, the snippet I used made me LOL when I first read it b/c I knew he was trying to provoke people. I'm still not sure what to say about the article.
soulsistah02
I agree that the piece was scattershot...and stupid...and extremely uncomplicated. *sighs*
Miranda
LOL...see, its this kind of article that REALLY pisses me off because I hate that passive aggressive crap...just go ahead and say you think black folks are dumb runaways falling for the pimp daddy!!! He didn't have to take us on a trip thru the motherland with a lesson on oratorical speaking to say that! UGH!

This just wams my heart:
Obama: Quit Listening to Rush Limbaugh if You Want to Get Things Done
WASHINGTON -- President Obama warned Republicans on Capitol Hill today that they need to quit listening to radio king Rush Limbaugh if they want to get along with Democrats and the new administration. "You can't just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done," he told top GOP leaders, whom he had invited to the White House to discuss his nearly $1 trillion stimulus package.
One White House official confirmed the comment but said he was simply trying to make a larger point about bipartisan efforts. "There are big things that unify Republicans and Democrats," the official said. "We shouldn't let partisan politics derail what are very important things that need to get done."
That wasn't Obama's only jab at Republicans today. While discussing the stimulus package with top lawmakers in the White House's Roosevelt Room, President Obama shot down a critic with a simple message. "I won," he said, according to aides who were briefed on the meeting. "I will trump you on that."
Ugh, Eric Cantor is my congressman and I can't his smarmy, smirky face. I vote for whoever comes up against him, Cooter from Dukes of Hazzard, this Hartke girl, I'd vote for John McCain if he ran against Cantor. I saw him at the Morton's Steak House a couple of months ago and wanted to throw my glass in his face!
Sounds like President Obama doesn't like him much either.

All of those pics from around the world....its so surreal....I loved the one of the female soldier that was crying.
NYT's posted an article on the rise of Chinese Hip-Hop. Stories like this really resonate with me. It's easy to dismiss the influence of AAs in popular culture on political structures, but I think we'd be foolish to do so.
For every movement, there has been music...no matter whether it's slaves singing negro spirituals in the fields in 1859 or Jay-Z brushing dirt off his shoulder in 2009...every movement has been accompanied by music.
And now the Chinese youth are embracing hip-hop...I hope they achieve their goal: freedom...just like the East Germans who sung "We Shall Overcome" when the Berlin Wall fell...it makes a brotha proud.
Miranda
It was my understanding that a lot of hiphop artists during the late 90s and on up, practically take up a second residence in Hong Kong and also Japan because they are in such demand for performances. I remember reading a story where a bunch of rappers were quoted about the ability to really make money in touring across the Far East.
You're right. As a matter of fact, we know that the Japanese are big consumers of hip-hop and R&B "wink-wink." Jasmine Guy got a gold album over there back-in-the-day.
However, China is different. The article describes how the state-controlled media is virtually blocking-out rap and hip-hop completely in favor of homogenized, pre-approved pop-trash. So the chinese youth have developed an...underground. It feels like "Roxanne-Roxanne" all over again.
That's the beauty of our art, we make it--and everybody else buys it. Entertainment is our greatest export.
Miranda
Oh no you didn't.....not the "Roxanne-Roxanne" underground movement......LOL!!
If I could have but one wish at this moment Lord....it would be to go back in time and be placed in the room when this happened...to see the look on the faces of those white male republicans...to see their faces turn ashy white and watch the very life be sucked from their bodies when President Obama smoothly said "I won"...that would make my life complete.
Miranda
"Still, other Democrats echoed the sentiment. As he left the White House, House Majority Whip James Clyburn of South Carolina was asked about Republican complaints that Democrats aren’t listening to what their GOP colleagues have to say. “We’re responding to the American people,” he said. “The American people didn’t listen to them too well during the election.”
Does anyone have the contact info for Paul Mooney? Anyone?? I've got to get his take on this...I really do...I must....please....LMAO
well i think we can do 1 of 2 things. either simply call him a hypocrite and leave it at that or we can say your not staying true to your own rules and offer solutions. simply pointing it out isnt enough, and its not like hes going to ignore people. but if he does want to keep his own rule he either needs to say this is the one exception or ok your right and get rid of the guy
Impeached Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich likened his upcoming Senate trial to "a hanging" Friday and said that he will boycott the proceedings because they're unfair and deny him his constitutional rights.
(Scroll Down To Watch Full Press Conference)
From the AP:
At a news conference in Chicago, he said his constitutional rights are being trampled under the Senate rules because he cannot call the witnesses that he wants.
He also accused fellow Democrats of wanting him out of office so that they can move forward with plans to raise income taxes. Republicans want him out, he said, so that they have an issue on which to campaign when taxes go up.
Blagojevich faces a Senate impeachment trial starting Monday that will determine if he's to remain in office. The Senate rules bar testimony from anyone federal prosecutors say would jeopardize the criminal corruption trial against the two-term governor.
Blagojevich is accused of, among other things, scheming to benefit from his power to name President Barack Obama's replacement in the U.S. Senate.
He has denied any wrongdoing.
Eschewing his now-customary poem, Blagojevich cited an Old West analogy to illustrate the supposed injustice of the Senate impeachment trial:
There was an old saying in the Old West, there was a cowboy who was charged with stealing a horse in town. And some of the other cowboys, especially the guy whose horse was stolen, were very unhappy with that guy.
One of the cowboy's said, "Let's hang him!" Story continues below
And the other cowboy said, "Hold on! Before we hang him, lets first give him a fair trial. Then we'll hang him."
Under these rules, I'm not even getting a fair trial. They're just hangin' me.
Watch:
THERE IS MORE.
He didn't even work from "CUE CARDS!!" :>) :>)

rikyrah: Blago "VIEW - ing" RATHER than COURT- ing:
Embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich will make his first national TV appearances Monday, with an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America" and a live appearance, with his wife Patti, on "The View."
The TV appearances mean Blagojevich will be in New York the same day the Illinois Senate begins his impeachment trial in Springfield. On Friday, Blagojevich called the trial "a hanging" and said that he will not attend the proceedings in protest.
Chicago Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed, who first reported Blagojevich's potential appearance on "The View," wrote that the governor has a "personal reason" for wanting to be on the Barbara Walters-led chat fest:
Walters reportedly referred to first lady Patti Blagojevich being described as a "potty mouth" in news reports on the show -- pointing to a profanity-laced tirade allegedly recorded by the feds. Blagojevich, however, was reportedly moved by what he felt was a touch of sympathy from [Whoopi] Goldberg.
"Good Morning America" airs at 7 a.m. ET; "The View" is at 11 a.m. ET.

Nah playas, he and the democrats won. your silly little tax cuts were done under bush and it only increased the deficit. your turn is up. so you better start giving and stop taking lol
Is there anyone watching CNN, Campbell Brown is discussing African American students and the Obama effect?
What do you guys think about that because queit frankly while I understand that he may inspire students, I am tired of the Obama the Black Messiah meme...its tired and quite frankly, it could be insulting at times.
Anyway, if anyone is watching, how do you feel about it?
spirit_55z
I think it all depends on the intent. We know the MSM takes the facts and magnifies them to the NTH degree.
There is no denying the effect President Obama has had on many, myself included. But every one will have there own experiences with the election of Barack Hussein Obama.
Fortunately, some of us are able to see through the bullshit media hype, honor and recognize President Obama's humaness.
Miranda
You totally put into words what I couldn't....."depends on the intent"....its like you watch the CNN special and instead of feeling proud you come away feeling like something wasn't right - and its not who was being interviewed, it was the interviewer, but you cant quite put your finger on what it is.
spirit_55z
Exactly. Like Larry King announcing his son Carson wants to be Black.
Announcing that being "black is in, a tide has turn", all the while he's chuckling away.
Larry wants to give validation to BLACKNESS. CNN wants to give validation to BLACKNESS since Barack Obama has become the POTUS.

See the movie too, Justice, if you can. The actors and actresses were all Indian. POC. And it one of was the most beautiful love stories I seen in a long time.
I didn't see it, but the reviews I got were pretty much more of a white racist has a come-to-Jesus moment of truth to help the poor Hmong teenager and defeat the Hmong gang...and apparently a black gang made an appearance as well. But the acting was great, as long as you overlook the whole white racist turns messiah angle.
overlook the whole white racist turns messiah angle. lol, thanks!
spirit_55z
Word. Didn't Hillary Swank do that movie "Freedom Writers" a few years ago?
And lest we forget, Larry King' son Carson wants to be BLACK all because of Barack Obama.
Miranda
I've been sick of many of these news segments because like you, I believe they are starting to be very condescending.
TRW
I agree with what Chavous (sp?) was saying. I think that it is fine that Obama has set a very high profile example of what hard work and discipline looks like for young African Americans, but why do we need examples? It places an unthinkable burden on a single individual, when really, it is up to the parents, students, and administrators to get the results.
spirit_55z
It's true that parent, teachers, and students to get results, but Presiden Obama is high profile. It keeps the goals higher, there's a neon "no limit" sign emmanating Barack that it flashes before the youth. HE'S BLACK, I'M BLACK, HE CAN DO IT, I CAN DO IT.
It's not the same coming from a melanin-challenged individual. NOT EVEN CLOSE. That is what the Black girls and boys that I mentor tell me.
rorysmomma
If you see black people in a position of power it gets into the subconscious.
rikyrah
That's why so many of our important people have come from HBCU's. There's something very powerful being on a college campus where everything good and bad has a Black face attached to it.

ENOUGH of this WHITEWASHING, DAMN IT!!!!
Angela
as a native american now deemed as "first american" I could care less about the black messiah meme......what I care about is the inspiration I got from Obama and his message.
I don't mean to be crass, but Obama knew this would happen. He understands the Black community. He knew what would happen. He understands the world as it is. He understands what he means to Black folk. He and Michelle both. Yes, it is a strong burden, but don't step up to the plate if you don't believe you can shoulder it.
I wrote in my endorsement back before Iowa that the 'symbol' of Obama was important and that symbols shouldn't be given shortshrift.
For part of Black America, the Obamas represent what they've always known, but has been hidden in plain sight. They're just relieved to SEE THEMSELVES.
For another part of Black America, the Obamas represent what they didn't think was possible, but now see IT COULD BE.
spirit_55z
Preach it! " Yes, it is a strong burden, but don't step up to the plate if you don't believe you can shoulder it."
I know that's right. Barack has always invited us to move forward with him, always moving forward. Why expect him or anyone else to crank it down to make us comfortable. We earn our states of consciousness.
caligirl
yes. symbolism is VERY important. very powerful. smart people know this, and it's a big part of why obama received such determined, fierce support... and opposition.

Angela, here's the letter from President Obama to his daughters
'What I Want for You — and Every Child in America' By President-elect Barack Obama Publication Date: 01/18/2009
On Tuesday, Barack Obama will be sworn in as our 44th President. On this historic occasion, PARADE asked the President-elect, who is also a devoted family man, to get personal and tell us what he wants for his children. Here, he shares his letter to them.
Dear Malia and Sasha,
I know that you've both had a lot of fun these last two years on the campaign trail, going to picnics and parades and state fairs, eating all sorts of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn't have let you have.
But I also know that it hasn't always been easy for you and Mom, and that as excited as you both are about that new puppy, it doesn't make up for all the time we've been apart. I know how much I've missed these past two years, and today I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey.
When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me—about how I'd make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with all your curiosity and mischief and those smiles that never fail to fill my heart and light up my day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself didn't seem so important anymore. I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours.
And I realized that my own life wouldn't count for much unless I was able to ensure that you had every opportunity for happiness and fulfillment in yours. In the end, girls, that's why I ran for President: because of what I want for you and for every child in this nation.
I want all our children to go to schools worthy of their potential—schools that challenge them, inspire them, and instill in them a sense of wonder about the world around them. I want them to have the chance to go to college—even if their parents aren't rich. And I want them to get good jobs: jobs that pay well and give them benefits like health care, jobs that let them spend time with their own kids and retire with dignity.
I want us to push the boundaries of discovery so that you'll live to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our planet cleaner and safer. And I want us to push our own human boundaries to reach beyond the divides of race and region, gender and religion that keep us from seeing the best in each other.
Sometimes we have to send our young men and women into war and other dangerous situations to protect our country—but when we do, I want to make sure that it is only for a very good reason, that we try our best to settle our differences with others peacefully, and that we do everything possible to keep our servicemen and women safe. And I want every child to understand that the blessings these brave Americans fight for are not free—that with the great privilege of being a citizen of this nation comes great responsibility.
That was the lesson your grandmother tried to teach me when I was your age, reading me the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and telling me about the men and women who marched for equality because they believed those words put to paper two centuries ago should mean something.
She helped me understand that America is great not because it is perfect but because it can always be made better—and that the unfinished work of perfecting our union falls to each of us. It's a charge we pass on to our children, coming closer with each new generation to what we know America should be.
I hope both of you will take up that work, righting the wrongs that you see and working to give others the chances you've had. Not just because you have an obligation to give something back to this country that has given our family so much—although you do have that obligation. But because you have an obligation to yourself. Because it is only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you will realize your true potential.
These are the things I want for you—to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive that you girls have. That's why I've taken our family on this great adventure.
I am so proud of both of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am grateful every day for your patience, poise, grace, and humor as we prepare to start our new life together in the White House.
Angela, did you read the letter that President Obama wrote to Sasha and Malia. I was in Parade magazine a few weeks ago.
What Barack said in the letter was everything he's doing is for them. Sasha and Malia. I'll find the link and repost it. I can't say it better than their dad.

The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that Palin is seeking an $11 million advance for her memoir and has hired high-powered Washington attorney Robert Barnett to broker the deal.
Teasing a segment on the book during his show “Hardball,” Matthews said: “If she can read, if she can write, she’ll make some money.”
Matthews repeated his suggestion that Palin could not write the book later in the show. “The question is who actually will write the Palin book,” he said. “The only politician I know who can write is Barack Obama.”
