Valerie Jarrett, a longtime friend of President Obama's and a senior adviser in the White House, will attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on behalf of America's new president, an administration official said Friday.

The annual event draws the richest business leaders from around the world. This year, the discussion is all-but certain to focus on the deterioration of the global economy.

Two other top Obama aides -- National Security Adviser James Jones and economic adviser Lawrence Summers -- had been planning to attend. But the administration official said the pair will stay in Washington to attend to current issues.

"Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to the president who is in touch each day with elected officials, business and community leaders across the nation about the economic challenges they face, will represent the administration at Davos," the official said. "Mr. Summers and General Jones will remain in Washington to advise the President on the near-term issues he must address."

Participation in the five-day meeting is by invitation only, and also draws the political and intellectual elite.

Interesting how AOL pointed out the BLACK ministers who were upset. How much you wanna bet these are the same black ministers who were down with Bush back in '04?

Not only that...I have read several post-campaign stories where several Black ministers requested "funds" to get volunteers for the Obama campaign, and Obama balked. He basically said thanks but not thanks--- people need to keep their eyes open, just because people call themselves Christian doesn't always mean that they are right.

I really don't know how to verbalize my contempt right now for John McWhorter and that diatribe. I admit I read the excerpt you posted first so I already had an attitude...but when I started reading, I thought historically he had some merit and actually forgot about that excerpt.....I was right there agreeing with the syntax and tone so prevalent in black oratory...........by the time he led me down that path and I realized I'd let my defenses down, it was too late, when the insult hit me I didn't duck.....straight in the kisser.........I'll be damned.

McWhorter has a PhD in linguistics, right? Yet his article totally overlooks the greatest factor regarding someone's dialect/accent--it's the person's environment--where they are nurtured and immersed.

So *O*s pronunciations ending in an "ih" sound may not be West African. They could just as easily be Samoan...or Indonesian for that matter.

Do we criticize white politicians such as Al Gore or Hillary Clinton when they come into southern AA churches, and start sounding like they are...black? No, they get extra credit for trying to sound like AA preachers.

I don't think that McWhorter was attacking *O* for being "multilingual." Our President has skills--I'd rather have a President who can utilitze multiple dialects rather than a cracka who only knows saltine-nese.

NYT's posted an article on the rise of Chinese Hip-Hop. Stories like this really resonate with me. It's easy to dismiss the influence of AAs in popular culture on political structures, but I think we'd be foolish to do so.

For every movement, there has been music...no matter whether it's slaves singing negro spirituals in the fields in 1859 or Jay-Z brushing dirt off his shoulder in 2009...every movement has been accompanied by music.

And now the Chinese youth are embracing hip-hop...I hope they achieve their goal: freedom...just like the East Germans who sung "We Shall Overcome" when the Berlin Wall fell...it makes a brotha proud.

It was my understanding that a lot of hiphop artists during the late 90s and on up, practically take up a second residence in Hong Kong and also Japan because they are in such demand for performances. I remember reading a story where a bunch of rappers were quoted about the ability to really make money in touring across the Far East.

You're right. As a matter of fact, we know that the Japanese are big consumers of hip-hop and R&B "wink-wink." Jasmine Guy got a gold album over there back-in-the-day.

However, China is different. The article describes how the state-controlled media is virtually blocking-out rap and hip-hop completely in favor of homogenized, pre-approved pop-trash. So the chinese youth have developed an...underground. It feels like "Roxanne-Roxanne" all over again.

Impeached Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich likened his upcoming Senate trial to "a hanging" Friday and said that he will boycott the proceedings because they're unfair and deny him his constitutional rights.

The TV appearances mean Blagojevich will be in New York the same day the Illinois Senate begins his impeachment trial in Springfield. On Friday, Blagojevich called the trial "a hanging" and said that he will not attend the proceedings in protest.

I've been sick of many of these news segments because like you, I believe they are starting to be very condescending.

I agree with what Chavous (sp?) was saying. I think that it is fine that Obama has set a very high profile example of what hard work and discipline looks like for young African Americans, but why do we need examples? It places an unthinkable burden on a single individual, when really, it is up to the parents, students, and administrators to get the results.

It's true that parent, teachers, and students to get results, but Presiden Obama is high profile. It keeps the goals higher, there's a neon "no limit" sign emmanating Barack that it flashes before the youth. HE'S BLACK, I'M BLACK, HE CAN DO IT, I CAN DO IT.

It's not the same coming from a melanin-challenged individual. NOT EVEN CLOSE. That is what the Black girls and boys that I mentor tell me.

If you see black people in a position of power it gets into the subconscious.

That's why so many of our important people have come from HBCU's. There's something very powerful being on a college campus where everything good and bad has a Black face attached to it.

I am an HBCU grad as well.

For part of Black America, the Obamas represent what they've always known, but has been hidden in plain sight. They're just relieved to SEE THEMSELVES.

For another part of Black America, the Obamas represent what they didn't think was possible, but now see IT COULD BE.

I totally disagree with your assumptions. They are children and probably still don't understand the impact of their parents status on their own lives. I want them to have the chance to go to college—even if their parents aren't rich. And I want them to get good jobs: jobs that pay well and give them benefits like health care, jobs that let them spend time with their own kids and retire with dignity.

I want us to push the boundaries of discovery so that you'll live to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our planet cleaner and safer. And I want us to push our own human boundaries to reach beyond the divides of race and region, gender and religion that keep us from seeing the best in each other.

Sometimes we have to send our young men and women into war and other dangerous situations to protect our country—but when we do, I want to make sure that it is only for a very good reason, that we try our best to settle our differences with others peacefully, and that we do everything possible to keep our servicemen and women safe. And I want every child to understand that the blessings these brave Americans fight for are not free—that with the great privilege of being a citizen of this nation comes great responsibility.

That was the lesson your grandmother tried to teach me when I was your age, reading me the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and telling me about the men and women who marched for equality because they believed those words put to paper two centuries ago should mean something.

She helped me understand that America is great not because it is perfect but because it can always be made better—and that the unfinished work of perfecting our union falls to each of us. It's a charge we pass on to our children, coming closer with each new generation to what we know America should be.

I hope both of you will take up that work, righting the wrongs that you see and working to give others the chances you've had. Not just because you have an obligation to give something back to this country that has given our family so much—although you do have that obligation. But because you have an obligation to yourself. Because it is only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you will realize your true potential.

These are the things I want for you—to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive that you girls have. That's why I've taken our family on this great adventure.

Sasha looks bored at this point...and both girls look tired........not my favorite of inauguration pics of them on that great day, but, it should remind us that the girls are subject to their parents goals.

I'm 53 years old and even today there are events that I attend where I look just like Sasha. Some of the events are strictly my choice, and other occassions out of obligation.

The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that Palin is seeking an $11 million advance for her memoir and has hired high-powered Washington attorney Robert Barnett to broker the deal.

Teasing a segment on the book during his show “Hardball,” Matthews said: “If she can read, if she can write, she’ll make some money.”

Matthews repeated his suggestion that Palin could not write the book later in the show. “The question is who actually will write the Palin book,” he said. “The only politician I know who can write is Barack Obama.”
