British Couple Has "Black And White Twins" For A Second Time

LONDON — A mixed-race British couple has defied the odds _ twice _ by producing two sets of twins in which one sibling appears to be black and the other white. Dean Durrant's newborn daughter Miya has dark skin like him. Twin sister Leah has fair skin like her blue-eyed, red-haired mother, Alison Spooner.

Their older siblings Lauren and Hayleigh, born in 2001, also have strikingly different skin tones and eye colors.

"There's no easy way to explain it all. I'm still in shock myself," Durrant, 33, told Sky News on Wednesday.

Both sets of twins are fraternal rather than identical, meaning they are the product of two separately fertilized eggs, so it is not unusual that they don't look alike. Miya's skin color was more influenced by her father's genes, while Leah takes after her mother.

But scientists say it's rare for a couple to have two sets of twins, end even rarer for them to have such different appearances.

"Even non-identical twins aren't that common," Dr. Sarah Jarvis of Britain's Royal College of General Practitioners told Sky. "Non-identical twins from mixed parents, of different races, less common still. To have two eggs fertilized and come out different colors, less common still. So, to have it happen twice must be one in millions."

WASHINGTON — With time running out on the Bush presidency, the administration seemed increasingly ready Friday to let the crisis in Gaza fall to President-elect Barack Obama. Although aides to President George W. Bush insisted they are still working hard to secure a "durable and sustainable" cease-fire _ even as their influence wanes with less than three weeks on office _ they all but ruled out a more direct approach and stood behind Israel, squarely blaming Hamas militants for the latest flare up in Mideast violence.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice briefed Bush on developments in Gaza, where intensifying rocket fire from Palestinian militants has elicited days of punishing air strikes by Israel, and she continued furious telephone diplomacy to arrange a truce. Yet, she said she had no plans to make an emergency visit to the region.

There have been growing calls for Rice to intervene with Israel in person amid rising international concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza. Her decision to stay away will likely disappoint those calling for a more robust U.S. role, particularly as French President Nicolas Sarkozy intends visit the region next week.

Are people in Illinois really that happy about Burris? Did he ask Bobby Rush to speak 'on his behalf 'at the "do not lynch" press conference? He just strikes me as another CBC potential member who will be out of step on what the real issues are.

The people in Illinois knows Burris and knows he had nothing to do with Blago's problems. The Rush statement was orchestrated, Cook County, IL is 5M AAs strong, that was for AAs to pay attention to how this is handled in DC with Burris and for the potential jury pool for Blago.

And Burris will only be there two years, the man is 71 years old. Seat him and take this heated issue OFF THE TABLE, if the stupid Democratic Senate let this linger, it makes the Republican candidate STRONGER.

The folks here in Illinois is getting tired of this.

I totally agree that an AfAm should be seated in Barack's old seat- call me a hypocrite for saying so, but I thought the way Bobby Rush stated it was just wrong;-no senate seat= being lynched? Burris himself made the R. candidate stronger by accepting it in the first place; as everyone knew, From Obama on down, no one was going to accept anyone Rod appointed That's why the D's are fighting it- too prevent the R's from having this issue in two years. Besides no one wanted McCain just because is was 70 something and hinted he wouldn't seek a 2nd term. ;-) Actually no one wanted McCain period.

Borders has signage over their tables at the front of the store. So I was trying to get an unspecified book, when I came across an 11x17, smiling picture of Barack with nice, large text beside him saying, "Our New President."

HONOLULU (AP) — President-elect Barack Obama will have a Commander in Chief's Ball during his inauguration with military personnel, their spouses and those wounded fighting in the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as guests.
In announcing this Thursday, officials said that tickets for the Jan. 20 military-only ball will be free to guests. The formal event will be at the National Building Museum in Washington.

"It is a privilege to honor our men and women in uniform during our inaugural festivities by continuing the tradition of the Commander in Chief's Ball. Our troops represent the best America has to offer, and without their dedication and sacrifice we would not be able to enjoy the freedoms that we are coming together to celebrate on Jan. 20," Obama said in a statement released while he vacationed here in his native Hawaii.

10 year-old student journalist Damon Weaver has already talked with "My Homeboy" Joe Biden, but with the gift of inaugural tickets from his congressman and $8,000 in donations sending him to DC, he hopes to interview Barack Obama and is continuing his media push to help his cause.

He's made a pitch video, included in the clip below, and went on MSNBC Friday with his teacher to talk about why he wants to talk to the President Elect.

Asked his feelings about Obama, Weaver said, "I'm very excited because he's the first black African-American president in the history for America."
He added that his fellow students in Florida want him to land the interview and are "very excited to see the first black president in the chair."

Some folks came over to talk about a new youth program this morning and the talk turned to the idea that "nothing is impossible." Someone linked to this video --- it's two years old and I missed the story when it came out, so maybe others did too. It's about a young African American man who lost his eyesight at age 2 and developed a skill for ecolocation that allows him to do some amazing things. I found it inspiring and thought maybe you would too.

I definitely can relate to this story because I had a brother that went blind at the age of 6 years. He never saw what I look like, but recognized me by my voice. My parents sent him to the blind school in Kerrville, Texas to learn a trade. He had his own business as a Professional Masseur.

Whenever I went to visit him, I'd drive around the city with him giving me directions on where to go. I kid you not! And he was the best brother one could have!

Yes, he passed away in 01. I had a hard time trying to work through my grief. Grief is something else!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was very hard on my parents to send him off to a strange place but they were looking out for his future. He had to learn how to support himself!

Filmmakers are conscientious about audience reactions. We sit in the back of rooms and tweak our products based on these reactions.

Tell the truth. You go to a movie theater to watch a friggin movie. They even warn you about talking in the theaters or allowing your cell phones to go off during the picture.

I will drive 20 miles to the Magic Johnson theatre over in Largo to watch a movie before I'll go to the AMC theaters in Union Station.

That theater is too ghetto fab for me. The last picture I saw there was "Last Holiday" with Queen Latifah and there were fools surrounding me on cell phones giving a blow by blow of the plot and lusting after LLCoolJ's bod (and he does have a tight one, let me tell ya').

If you have to be on a cell phone during the movie, you don't need to be AT THE MOVIES.

I'll believe that when they put his therapists on the stand to testify - otherwise, if he was THAT jacked up, he would have done worse than shoot at a family whose only offense was laughing in the theater at something in the movie that probably was funny and designed for laughs.

Happy Belated New Years All.

I didn't make any New Year resolutions this year because I never keep them. Instead I made a commitment to get my financial house back in order. I have been doing that ALL morning and guess what . . . I already see improvements. I ruthlessly slashed my cable bill in half (dropped services I don't use and shamelessly asked the cable customer service representives to give me better service at a reduced cost), reduced the cost of my phone service, took HUGE CHUNKS out of interest rates charged by my credit and home mortgage bills by setting up bi-weekly payments on my bills using the same payments as I do when paying monthly but splitting the payment in half (i.e. $100.00 monthly bill -- pay $50.00 every two weeks). Now I am weeding through wasted spending from last year to assess what else can be eliminated or reduced. I am on a mission.

Anyway . . . .how was your New Year?

My family asked if they could "stop by" on Jan 31 New Years Eve and I agreed. How was I supposed to know they would not leave until last night at 10:30 PM. So I had 21 people sleeping in my house yesterday morning and couldn't get them out until last night. uhhmmm uhmmm uhmmmm. That was WRONG. Wrong I tell you for a host of reasons. But . . . what can you do . . . they are family . . . live and learn.

Hey, Val. Happy New Year to ya. Congratulations on taking action!

Here's a tip for recyling clothes if you care to use it. I made $300 last year at a high end consignment shops.

1. Gather any and all clothing, shoes, accessories, and jewelry not worn in a year. (If you have an enormous amount of clothing, you'd be surprised!)
2. Wash and if not washable, buy dryell kit (you can throw dry cleaning in the dryer with a dryell cloth)
3. Place all clothing that require hangers on a hanger
4. Take the clothing to a consignment shop
5. If they accept the clothing, you can either get cash or store credit to purchase other clothing from the store. (sometimes I do both)
6. Recycle every season and alternate consignment shops, buy from one, and recycle with another.

I've found recycling clothes a great way to save and wear fine classics and some trendy stuff without having to break the bank.

As to your family, GOTTA LOVE'EM!!! :-)))

Interesting... The black friends that I knew from "those" types of Eastern schools "bourgie" was used in a much more pejorative fashion.

So, it's kind of interesting to see the term in use here unless it's meant to be ironic.
