Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Charles Barkley is taking a leave of absence from the TNT broadcast team.
The announcement came in a statement from David Levy, the president of Turner Sports, on Friday.
"I have spoken with Charles Barkley regarding the incident that took place in Scottsdale, Arizona, last week and I understand he has hired a lawyer to represent him regarding this matter," said Levy. "When I spoke with Charles, he was apologetic for the events that transpired and it was obvious he understood the significance of this situation. This is an important time for Charles as he deals with the legal and personal issues that confront him. Charles is a valued part of the Turner Sports organization and we are concerned for his well-being."
Rep. John Conyers, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, is still invested in prosecuting members of the Bush administration once they leave office.
In an interview on the "Bill Press Show" Friday, the Michigan Democrat floated the notion that the Bush team's illegal wiretapping, torture, detention, and other practices could land some members in an international tribunal.
"I don't want to get too speculative on that, because it's still under review," said Conyers on the radio show. "Now, remember, violation of the federal criminal code doesn't end because you leave office. If a crime has been committed and there seems to be reasonable evidence that it did get committed, there's nothing for a person to be prosecuted... Leaving office doesn't free you up from what you may have done wrong ... Anyone that leaves office, including [the] President ... there's the World Court ... They have tribunals ... This thing is not over with. As they say: Stay tuned."
Conyer has made similar proclamations before. The feisty, long-serving Democrat advocated impeaching Bush but was dissuaded from the notion by Democratic leadership.
While many foodies speculated a high-profile chef would be given the job, President-elect Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have decided to keep current White House executive chef Cristeta Comerford in the kitchen, a spokeswoman for Michelle Obama confirmed Friday.
"Cristeta Comerford brings such incredible talent to the White House operation and came very highly regarded from the Bush family," Michelle Obama said in a statement. "Also the mom of a young daughter, I appreciate our shared perspective on the importance of healthy eating and healthy families. I look forward to working with her in the years to come."
Comerford, who was named to the post in 2005, is the first woman to hold the position. She had served as an assistant chef in the White House kitchens for 10 years, and is trained in French classical techniques but specializes in ethnic and American food. Originally from the Philippines, Comerford has also worked in Austria.

Family wants police charged in New Orleans killing
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- As fireworks exploded over the Big Easy on New Year's Eve, 22-year-old Adolph Grimes III pulled up to his grandmother's home near the French Quarter after a five-hour drive from Houston, Texas. Grimes, who relocated to Texas with his fiancée, Shae Whitfield, after Hurricane Katrina, couldn't wait to get home with their 17-month-old son, Chris, and ring in the new year with friends and family. "He made it at 12 o'clock exact, with a second to spare," said his father, Adolph Grimes Jr. Three hours later, Grimes lay dying on the sidewalk half a block from his grandmother's front door, with fireworks giving way to the hue of flashing police lights. The Orleans Parish coroner said Grimes was shot 14 times, including 12 times in the back. Grimes had just walked out of the house and was in a car waiting for his cousin, according to family members, when nine plainclothes officers -- part of an undercover narcotics task force driving around New Orleans on New Year's Eve -- surrounded Grimes' vehicle. Shots rang out; New Orleans Police Superintendent Warren Riley said Grimes shot at police first. The Grimes family disagrees, saying police executed a loved one as he ran for his life. "It was like someone was a murderer, and they finally caught him," said Grimes' mother, Patricia. "I ain't ever seen anything like this. And the worst part about it was I had to wait for the 5 o'clock news to find out my son was murdered." Shortly after finding out about the death, the family contacted the FBI to investigate alleged wrongdoing by police officers in the shooting.

Other young black men have likely killed more young black men than all the police departments from Miami to Maine, from NYC to Wassila AK. About some anger and outrage there? Seriously.

WTF, are you fucking kdding me????? One civil servant that is paid to protect citizens and kills an unarmed man as viciously as what we seen, is worse than 50 million black men killing each other. GMAFB.

So that makes it OK? Just fine and dandy?????

ok. Black on Black crime = nationwide Police CLEARANCE for open season on Black men. WTF?

According to Chris, it shouldn't matter that cops are killing unarmed black men, b/c black men kill other black men. That makes it right. No need to be outraged. *major fucking eye roll*

Say what? really? who knew? Thanks for sharing - no one had any idea black on black crime was going on. Wow.

There is NO SUCH THING as "black on black crime."
People kill/rob/rape who is around them.
White people kill/rob other white people.
Hispanics kill other Hispanics.
Asians kill other Asians.
Yet we don't hear about "Asian on Asian" or "White on White" crime. Why is that? When I open up the paper and hear that Oscar Gonzalo was shot/killed/robbed, I can bet 90% of the time Juan Jimenez did it.
When you hear that Billy Ray out in his hood got shot/robbed/killed, Bobby Joe is the one who done it.
The myth of "black on black" crime only serves to say "lookit black people committing all this crime," as if black = crime, when the fact is people kill who's around them.
Yes, black people are killing and robbing each other too much but that's no excuse for law enforcement to be shooting unarmed and defenseless black people.

Ex-advisor to panel: ORDER BLAGO TO GET PSYCH EVALUATION
SPRINGFIELD — When former Chicago television broadcaster Bob Arya joined Gov. Blagojevich's staff as a senior advisor in November 2006, the governor described him as “a real asset to my administration.”
But when Arya's run with Blagojevich came to an end, he had a story to tell — one of intense jealousies by the governor toward President-elect Barack Obama, House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) and others, a terrorized staff, and emotional instabilities that Arya said demonstrate the need for a psychological evaluation by the legislative panel weighing the governor's impeachment.
Not long after Arya assumed his $114,000-a-year position, Blagojevich confided in him his desire to one day reach the White House. When corruption allegations prevented that from happening, the governor's disdain for Obama seemed to grow. “Rod dislikes Barack Obama because Barack is living the life Rod envisioned for himself,” Arya wrote in a nine-page memo he has shared with the House impeachment panel. http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/blagojevich/...

U.S. Supreme Court- American Bar Association Journal Supreme Court Will Hear ‘Powder Keg’ Voting Rights Case Posted 1 hour, 14 minutes ago By Debra Cassens Weiss
The U.S. Supreme Court has accepted a “powder keg” voting rights case that challenges the law requiring Justice Department clearance for changed election procedures in certain jurisdictions.
The case affects nine states, mostly in the South, and several other local voting bodies that are required to get clearance under the law, Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, the New York Times reports. Congress extended the clearance requirement in 2006.
At issue is whether society has changed so much that once-constitutional racial remedies are now improper infringements on state sovereignty. Law professor Richard Hasen of Loyola Law School in Los Angeles told USA Today in a story previewing the case that it offers a “powder keg” of divisive issues.
A decision overturning the extension “would mark the biggest change in U.S. voting law in decades,” Bloomberg News reports.
The Times says the Supreme Court could issue a narrow opinion if it accepts an argument by the utility district challenging the law that it is entitled to an exemption. The district says it is no longer subject to the law because it has acted without discrimination for the last 10 years.
The case is Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District No. 1 v. Mukasey
These mofos tried voter suppression at every turn..so much so that we had to invent a WIKI to track it, and they think they can argue that the Voting Rights Act isn't needed?

Unfortunately, I am not surprised at all. As the executive and legislative branches look like they might actually work together for the common good, it would not be Washington politics as usual if the judicial branch (stacked with conservatives no doubt) didn't work to keep things "interesting."
There are many people who think Obama's ascendency is the beginning of the end for laws, policies and programs aimed at improving the black social condition. While I do not subscribe to this school of thought, efforts to bring this era to an end are likely just getting underway. Stay tuned...

SUPREME COURT TO HEAR CHALLENGE TO VOTING RIGHTS ACT
By Joan Biskupic, USA TODAY WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court announced Friday that it will hear a challenge to the landmark 1965 voting rights act, paving the way for a major decision this term on federal power to oversee state election laws. In the backdrop is the recent election of Barack Obama and the question of whether America still needs an expansive law protecting against discrimination in voting now that a black man has won the presidency.
A decision in the case from Texas, to be heard in April, could impact the U.S. government's authority to ensure that racial minorities — who were subjected to literacy tests and other devices to keep them from the polls for most of the 20th Century — continue to have as much of a chance as whites to elect candidates of their choice.
In dispute is the 2006 renewal of the Voting Rights Act, which Congress passed overwhelmingly and President Bush signed.
Richard Hasen, an election-law expert at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, said the dispute "has the potential to be the most important election case since Bush v. Gore." That 2000 decision cut off Florida ballot recounts and ensured Bush the White House.

Get ready for the in-law in chief.
Transition officials said Friday that President-elect Barack Obama's mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, is moving into the White House to join Michelle Obama and their two children.
It's not clear whether the move will be permanent.
Katie McCormick Lelyveld, the press secretary for Michelle Obama, said Robinson would decide in coming months whether she wants to stay in Washington.
Those poor SS agents they are just chauffeurs now. They are going to have to protect the press if they come to close to those kids.
