Very good article but it's important to understand how we've been conditioned (by the colonizers) to understand race in this country. In the U.S. we've always been taught that "one drop of Black makes you whole." So using that rule yes, Obama and his daughters are definitely Black. But in the other colonized parts of America, particularly in Latin America, they were taught an opposite one-drop rule. One drop of white (or European blood) makes you white (or something other than Black or indigenous). That is why it may be harder from people coming from this racial identification philosophy to call people Black who are clearly of mixed ancestry. This is why you have many people who clearly look to have African roots saying, "I'm not Black." It's all in the way we were taught to define ourselves.

I agree with you, Obama is a bi-racial man, whom identifies self as black. His kids are not bi-racial they're just a quarter white. If everyone researched their family tree we'd all find some white or Native American in our background. So what! He's the 1st bi-racial (half-breed) president. It makes history and it's a beautiful thing! Isn't that why God mad so many different races, so we can inter-mix? We're here in America so were all Americans. Other countries have different shades of people with different hair textures, but don't act as ignorant as Americans do about "who's what." So what! Obama loves both sides, don't get it twisted.

right on Trumystique, i was just about to chime in and say something similar. Mexicans are a multiracial people and that little girl would probably fit right in depending on were her father lives.

Mexico held filipino slaves for a time. I am half filipino half black so...Mexican men and women start speaking to me a lot in spanish, i can only guess it's because my appearance makes me feel familiar to them as they are used to seeing asiatic african people in mexico.

i also wonder why the word bi-racial seems to mean a black white mix to so many people. people are always skeptical if i say i'm bi-racial until i say i'm half-filipino. then they say "oh".

excellent post.

I am also often disturbed by the machinations of middle class whites and partronizing liberals. And I agree that on a practical level, the Obama kids are black. Indeed, calling them "biracial" is suspect.

But I must say that my biracial kids are exactly that - biracial. They are two things at once. They are white yet they are not; they are black yet they are not.

As a parent I am responsible to raise them in a way that reflects their reality. It would be wrong to force them into some form of "blackness" (who would define that, btw?) just as it would be wrong to force them into some form of "whiteness." Add to that we (the parents) need to also make sure they know and retain their Haitian culture.

I am bothered by how casually some of the authors here would put kids like mine into a box, which makes me suspect they have not had biracial kids.

I always believed that white parents in interracial relationships with black partners labeled their offspring 'bi-racial' as a way to distance their kids from the black community.

What's so tragic about that is that the black partners ALLOW it to happen.

How dreadful.

i dont think its wrong to call them biracial or black

they are mostly black but arte of more than one race

no need for anger its correct either way no need to omit one race over the other

and about the man with the green eyes obv he has some caucasian blood he has deffinate features. his parents maybe "black" but theres deffinately a mixture. most american blacks and american whites have some degree of native american european and african admixture somewhere in the family tree

obamas children have a white grandmother so they are mixed and are able to celebrate her side too they are not denying there blackness

The sad fact is--I'm beginning to agree that this in many cases, could likely be the case with much of this "biracial identification". I've seen alot of the discussion on racially mixed sites and internet groups over the years and a great deal of the rhetoric expressed by self-described "biracial" people would curl your toes!

Interesting article. I am a person of color (Black mother, Italian-American father), I agree with the point of the above article and I'll tell you why: I can respect an INDIVIDUAL'S private racial identity choice. If a person chooses on their own volition to identify as Biracial because of their life experiences, their particular perspective on identity, or simply because they feel it's right for them, I say okay, great! Everyone has a right to make their own decision on such a personal thing as who (and what) they view themselves as in life. HOWEVER, the whole "biracial thing" quickly becomes nonsense, inauthentic, and invalid when a "cause", "identity", whatever one wants to call it begins to get CRAMMED down one's throat, and down the throats of disinterested parties who have no desire in being a cheerleader for what in all reality is a nonexistent racial categorization.

I say all of this and I speak from the perspective of one who has a White dad myself--why? Because I went through the stage of wanting to do exactly that--"cheerlead" a biracial identity in my early teen years and because of very eye-opening personal experience and a lot more study of Black history (my history), I've come to the personal conclusion that a 'biracial' label (for me anyway) is unececessary, politically irrelevant, and redundant (for as the article said above) the Black community is ALREADY multiracial at it's core.

Just wanted to say that this article makes great and socially relevant points, that I think more people need to keep in mind the next time they jabber on about who is "biracial".

Town: I dig your Irish groove, having once checked "white/caucasian" on an application for a job I didn't want. The interviewer shuffled and fidgeted, then pointed it out. I said, "Oh, yes, I am a white man. If one drop makes me black, then today I'm gonna use my other drop and see what happens."

To the author of this article, I have to say you are mistaken with the above comment. Before you point the finger at others by calling them confused, you should do a little research on what race is.

Caucasian, Black, and Asian are races, Mexican isn't a race. Native Americans fall under the Asian group. It is to my understand that many Mexicans consider themselves mestizos, a blend of European (white) and Native Americans, and a few others either identify soley as white or Indigenous. Surely you can understand this since you stated that most Black Americans are multiracial. Well, that applies to Mexicans, too. I don't see why people can't grasp this concept.

I do understand that racial categories is a social construct and that ultimately there is but one race but for the sake of this topic I felt the need to break it down to you.

So, that "biracial" baby really is NOT biracial much like Obama's daughters aren't biracial.

So in keeping in line with the technical terms, Obama's mother is WHITE, and his father is BLACK therefor Obama is BIRACIAL.

Once again Mexican IS NOT A RACE.
