I've had all weekend to cool off a bit and do my due diligence in terms of research. I even went back and read the Senate debates of over 100 years ago when similar arguments were made against the first African American Senator, Hiram Revels. I sincerely believe that Roland Burris is a buffoon who selfishly put his desire to become a Senator over the interests of the black community to be represented by somebody black who could hold the seat, but Lynn Sweet's article dropping the dime on Reid and his mealy-mouthed dissembling changed my mind. There is no legal basis to deny Burris this seat. None whatsoever, despite the Caucus opposition to any
Blagojevich appointment. rikyrah and CPL are right and I was wrong.

The only reason I didn't want Jesse appointed as senator is because I didn't want to lose him as my US Rep after suffering through the humiliation of Mel Reynolds and the embarrassment of Gus Savage. Jr. is better respected in the state than his father ever was and the clashes father and son had because of Jr's strong support of Obama's candidacy probably helped him a lot with progressives all over Illinois. Its so nice to know that after sucking up to the GOP in Congress Harry Reid was kind enough to meddle in my home state and fugg up things here, too.

I agree with you very much on this. Blago's versions have no credibility. Check the source of info before taking sides. So what if there is no Black Senator, it’s because the Black Senator is now the Black President. There is a Black Governor of New York and Mass. There has already been a Black Governor of Virginia. Harold Ford lost a relatively close race in Tennessee. Blackwell ran in Ohio for the GOP and will perhaps be elected RNC Chairman.

The glass is more than half full

I hope this will be the start of some real political strategizing and vetting who the political allies are and AREN'T as far as those that would best serve the interests of a sizable amount of Black people. We have to look for the candidates who would best serve our interests locally/nationally and start wielding our political clout. Truth be told Obama got a lot of support but has made no concrete promises to Black people either. We're just hoping that a lot of what he has planned will include us but general things like jobs and housing is no guarantee of relief of specific problems that affect (some of) us. Can you see Harry Reid trying to pull this with any other group of people? And yet we keep supporting this political party with no PARITY in return. It is time for that to change.

Dang. You guys were on fire yesterda! I am just catching up on yesterday's threads.

This whole scenario just pisses me off. I am so sick of Democratic leadership taking Black folks for granted.

All this talk of "taint" when the real deal was simply Burris was not the desired pick. Hmmph.

I think that it has to do with many of the so called main stream voters and the media who don't like his father, and, keep it real there are plenty who don't, as a reason for why they don't think he can win the whole state. Had he been named John Jackson, with his record, he probaly could.
