ho ho ho and blessings. i love the meister eckhart quote that says, " we are all called to be mothers of god because god is always needing to be born."

and here is a recipe i just got from a fabulous cook in the neighborhood. i've been asking for years:

"Sweet Potatoe Pie"

7 medium sweet potatoes or yams
4 eggs
1 1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup flour
1/2-1 cup melted butter
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
4 cups sugar or less
3 tbsp vanilla (she uses vanilla and butternut)
2 prepared pie shells

Bake sweet potatoes. Peel and mash in a large bowl. Add flour, sugar, salt and spices; blend well. Beat in eggs and milk a little at a time until custard consistency. Fold in melted butter and vanilla. Taste and correct seasoning if needed.

Pour into two unbaked pie shells. Bake at 325 degree oven for 1 1/2 hours until filling is set.

My friend says she usually uses at least 10 potatoes without doubling the recipe except maybe adding a bit more sugar. And then she gets 4 8" pies.

I'm making it, for sure. Too bad you all won't be around here because I'd save each of you a piece for making me smile so much all the time.

I have been searching for a fabulous bean pie recipe...anyone have one?

oh please do share when you find that bean pie recipe. a couple of the old school guys who hang at the tech center keep reminiscing about the ones that used to be sold in dudley square. they would be so tickled if i made one,

the sweet potatoes can cook at 375 or 400 degrees. be sure to use a fork and stick them each in a few places so they don't explode in the oven! i start checking them for oozing and softness after 20 minutes, but depending on the size and type they can take up to an hour. like i said, look for a little ooze and also stick them with a fork all the way in --- if the potato is soft and the fork goes in easy, they are done. my friend says you can boil up the sweet potatoes, but the taste is better if you bake them. . . happy cooking!

oops. i forgot to say is that this recipe is especially in honor of barack obama who says his favorite pie is sweet potato!

What a misleading headline!!

As far as for all those questions posed in the article that infer there was a lack of transparency or seek to determine a motive for how Obama did respond I say

Who gives a shyt!

What is clear is that Obama had no part in a 'paytoplay' scheme for the IL Senate seat and that furthermore, it was not at the top of his list of things to do due to the far greater economic problems this country faces as well as his pressing need to get his cabinet and people ready so that he can hit the ground running when he begins to govern.

To that I say....way to go Obama...keeping focused on what matters is what I want in my President. I am impressed with your leadership as well as your refusal to engage in the endless queries and speculations that the press raises by declining to engage it.

Well done President Obama...you were right in deciding that all that noise from the media nothing but distractions.

Keep brushing your shoulders off and working on the real problems!!

I finished all my shopping yesterday! Yay! My feet were killing me by the time I finished! Now I have to hop to it with the cooking. I'm going to try Susan's recipe. Hope it turns out....cross your fingers! :)

I so want to try the recipe...but I only one potato...so guess what? I am going to make me a one potatoe pie with the ingredients!!

Can't wait...hahaha...it will be crustless but I bet good. besides, isn't it the crust that has all the freakin calories?

I'm semi-reluctant to doubt many of Shearer's observations. He is a longtime resident, and he's enthusiastically chided (both on HuffPo and Le Show both Obama and McCain for not even mentioning Katrina recovery in New Orleans during the campaign. And Shearer is certainly no conservative.

That's not to say that he might not be holding back on the real class/race clashes going on in N.O.

Well, see you have to understand that black people are inherently violent and prone to rioting, urged on by rappers. If Jay-Z gets up in the middle of DC and says "Can't wear skinny jeans cuz my knots don't fit," you can betcha bottom dollar blacks will riot. When Ron Browz tells people to Pop Champagne, he's really telling blacks to pop Whitey. As it was, Barack Obama stirred up the negroes when he dusted off his shoulders. And let's not forget when Michelle and Barack fist bumped at the conclusion of the Democratic primaries and when Barack told the crowds in Iowa "Our time is now," he was really telling white people your time is up.

Jethro and Billy Bob are totally justified in popping black people, they have to "protect" themselves.

The post at that link requires a lot of focus and reading of all the links in the post. I did not have the luxury of the time to do so. My overall sense though of the post is that these folks are just trying to make a federal case of prognostication about what the cabinet picks mean in terms of how Obama wil govern.

I feel they are simply too intense far too early and that the goal is simply to OBJECT. That is due to the last 8 years of divisive political discourse in the media and on talk radio.

I am ready to get beyond that. Furthermore, I am going to give Obama a lot of slack because I do believe the man is a visionary and in the end it is not going to matter what baggage those folks bring to the table. Obama is going to slice and dice those folks and synthesize the data in an entirely diffferent manner which the country and folks like Bowers are unprepared for and unable to predict.

Anyone, watching Obama to date could discern as much...this man has not travelled a conventional path to the top and he is not going to govern in a traditional manner that could be inferred by previously valid measures of determining how he will lean. Obama is a pragamatist first and foremost and I suspect that folks like Bowers are going to find that out.

The country does not want to lean to the 'progressive left' we are a primarily socially center left and fiscally conservative center right nation.

And that is what Obama is. Thinking anything else is nothing but fool's errand. Since every single one of his cabinet and staff choices, do not get to do as they choose...instead they will implement and execute the plan Obama decides is the course of action.

Obama is so cool and imperturbable that white folks and pundits are clueless. The people who know him best are those who were on the campaign trail. Those happen to be the rookies and least senior people in news organization and network broadcasts, becasue they were assigned with the notion that Obama was a 'fluke' and would soon be out of the race.

What this means is that the senior analysts and senior correspondents don't know shyt about Obama and they are grasping at straws. Only when they decide to allow those 'junior rookies' to ascend up the ladder and write articles and give political analysis will we hear far greater insight about Obama and what the nuanced way he has of speaking and addressing topics really means.

Obama represents a huge paradigm shift in political thinking and how he will govern. Analysts have not caught up yet, they are still working from the old paragdigm and frustrated by it not being effective, thus they write critical articles with unsubstantive analysis.

Folks like Bowers are clueless, no matter how much data he pulls up. It does not apply to Obama, cause he is a politically unique animal.

Excellent argument. It is precisely the reason why I have withheld judgment on so much. I am going to enjoy his inauguration and watch what he does as President. Then we will begin to see what he is all about. I for one am looking forward to seeing what he is capable of.

KAILUA, Hawaii — He won't be sworn in as commander in chief for another 26 days, but President-elect Barack Obama's decision to get his morning exercise on a military base during his Hawaii vacation has given him an early taste of some of the formalities that come with the job.

Leaving Semper Fit Center at Marine Corps Base Hawaii Kaneohe Bay on Sunday after his morning workout,

The following morning, as the president-elect's motorcade entered the marine base, the guard on duty stood at attention and saluted. It's unclear if Obama returned the military courtesy. Since Sunday, he seems to be relying on the more civilian hand wave, perhaps because he is still president-elect.

Saluting members of the military was a practice started by Ronald Reagan. It has its share of critics, who say that although the Constitution says the president is "commander in chief of the Army and Navy of the United States," he is a civilian officeholder and does not wear a uniform. But the hand salute has been used by every president since Reagan.

The president-elect's presence the past three days on the Hawaii military base has caused a slight stir.

On Tuesday, a Navy officer gave one of Obama's press aides some gifts for the president-elect: a book about the first black naval officers, "The Golden Thirteen," a U.S.S. Lake Erie hat and a blue-and-gold Navy basketball jersey and warm-up. Another member of the military put in a request for him and his buddies to play basketball with the president-elect.

The base has been busy the past two mornings that Obama's motorcade has winded through just after dawn. Men wearing shorts and gold T-shirts with ARMY written on the back run alongside the road. Marines in uniform are in, out and around the gym, a nondescript concrete block building painted military brown.

While Obama works out inside, a small crowd, their cameras and cell phones out, has formed in the parking lot the past two mornings.

Obama and his wife, Michelle, shook hands with several dozen soldiers and their families standing in the parking lot on Tuesday morning.

When the president-elect stepped out of the gym shortly after 8 a.m. on Monday, he traded the salute for a wave to the nearly 20 uniformed and non-uniformed men and women who had gathered. He shook hands and chatted briefly before leaving with a thank you: "Happy Holidays, guys. I appreciate your service."

As the president-elect's motorcade passed through the gate of the military base, three marines on duty stood at attention and saluted.

c) Biden meets with top economic advisors

Vice President-elect Joe Biden made the case for a bold economic recovery package in a meeting in Washington this morning with the Obama-Biden administration’s top economic advisors.

“Economists rarely agree, but on this score there’s overwhelming agreement that we need a robust and sustained economic recovery package,” he said at the meeting. “There’s virtually no disagreement on that point, with economists from left to right agreeing that the greater threat to our economy lies in doing too little.”

Biden was flanked by Larry Summers, Director-designate of the National Economic Council, and Melody Barnes, Director-designate of the Domestic Policy Council, both of whom highlighted the areas the plan’s job-creation initiatives will focus on: health care, schools, infrastructure, and energy.

“We think it’s an opportunity to turn crisis into opportunity to make sure ... that mobility and opportunity are in fact the hallmark of this administration,” Director-designate Barnes said.

Vice President-elect Biden also noted several times that though the package is likely to be very large, there will be strict accountability and no earmarks.

“I know it’s Christmas but President-elect Obama and I are absolutely determined that this economic recovery package will not become a Christmas Tree,” he said.

Obama says goodbye to late grandmother in Hawaii (Wed Dec 24, 2008 4:37am EST)

HONOLULU (Reuters) - President-elect Barack Obama paid his last respects on Tuesday to the woman he called the rock of his family, the grandmother who helped to raise him, before scattering her ashes from a Hawaiian shoreline.

Madelyn Dunham, known to Obama as Toot, short for Tutu, the Hawaiian word for grandmother, took him in when his mother went to work in Indonesia and put him through private school.

Dunham was one of the main formative influences on Obama's life but she did not live to see him win office. She died of cancer at 86 just two days before he won the November 4 election.

The demands of the presidential campaign meant Obama was unable to fly to Hawaii for her funeral. But on Tuesday, he finally bade her farewell at a memorial service attended by friends and family, including his wife Michelle, daughters Malia and Sasha, and half-sister Maya Soetoro-Ng.

Obama is in Hawaii for a two-week Christmas holiday before he resumes his preparations to take office as president on January 20.

Media were kept away from the First Unitarian Church in Honolulu on the island of Oahu. After the service, Obama and about a dozen others traveled to Lanai Lookout on the southeast corner of Oahu, scrambling over a wall and down to the rocky shoreline to scatter his grandmother's ashes.

It was the same place where Obama had scattered his mother's ashes after her death more than a decade ago.

Obama's sister said in a statement earlier that the memorial service would allow him to "grieve and emotionally process" the loss of the woman he called the rock of his family and whose name he frequently invoked on the campaign trail.

"She proved to be a trailblazer of sorts," Obama wrote in "Dreams from My Father," his best-selling memoir, saying his grandmother was "the first woman vice-president of a local bank" after starting out as a secretary to help pay the costs of his unexpected birth.

This is so true. Hilarious when I read it, yet, I knew it to be true, because I didn't have to go any further than my immediate family. You get 2 POC together, and they have no idea what their children will look like. You hope for them to be ' normal and healthy' - like Grandmama used to say . She outta know. She had everything from milk chocolate to my aunt, who could have passed for a red-headed White woman. Oh, the stories she used to tell about being mistaken for the MAMMY when she went out with my aunt in the ' White' sections of town.

Grandmama was dark chocolate. Granddaddy wouldn't have skipped any beats in Scotland or Wales.

Same here...we have all shades of melanin and in between...even my groom asked me 'who are those white folks at our wedding' lol...I said those are your new cousin in-laws and they are not white...so there!!
