Trumystique, yes, I wonder too, given the pathos of these women, I think they would've sang a different tune if Michelle were light-skinned or white.

They can identify with the whiteness or lighter skin, you know they're more comfortable. Darker skin is way more threatening. And Barack loves Michelle so much! You'd have to be blind not to see how much he loves her, and he displays it publically too!

Yeah given that I think that Brokaw is racist, I too would look at the question with suspicion. But I also think he asked because Obama is considered to be an intellectual. Rarely you see a president who is one. By saying that he will invite poets and jazz musician reminds of me of JFK.

IMO one of the reasons the PUMA type white women were so mad at Obama is because he didn't want nothing to do with them. Also, Obama was always gentlemanly towards Hillary. That doesn't fit within their preconceived notions of how a black man is supposed to act. So he was treating them better than McCain and Joe the Plumber, therefore he is an “inadequate black male.”

They ain't ask not nan other president to “tone down his inauguration”, why should Obama? He shouldn't have it blinged out in gold but he shouldn't have to resort to serving peanut butter sammies like some people (Rachel Ray) have suggested. I think if he can make inaugural events that as many people as possible can enjoy, that will be good enough for me. But under no circumstances should he have to have a wine and cheese tasting in lieu of an inaugural ball to satisfy the haterz in the world.

I sincerely *HOPE* that Thompson is just a rumor. I was thrilled when I heard about Grijalva. But I understand if Obama feels like he needs to look at all of his options. But Thompson is just the wrooooong direction. He brings no change to the table. I am seriously looking more closely to see where this leads us.

've never read romance novels, so what I have read from this piece has sparked curiosity even more.

Miller put his life at risk for a relative of mine (if I remember my family history right, USS West Virginia captain Mervyn Bennion was my grandfather's uncle). The double standard by which white America expected black soldiers to fight for a country that treated them as second-class citizens is still galling after all these years. (… not to mention Japanese-American internment–for all the rosy memories of national solidarity during WWII, it was decidedly crappy for a lot of people.)

This seemed an opportune time to leave my first comment at JJP–I've been lurking for the last couple months. Great blogging, all.
