Tugboats will pull the George H.W. Bush, the 10th and final aircraft carrier in the Nimitz class, to its January commissioning, the Navy and Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding said Thursday.
The big carrier should have sailed under its own power from the Newport News shipyard to Norfolk Naval Station for the Jan. 10 ceremony.
It is not ready for delivery, said Margaret Mitchell-Jones, a Northrop Grumman spokeswoman. In the past, the Navy has delayed the ceremony, which marks the ship's official entry into the Navy fleet. But not this time.
Navy Secretary Donald Winter set the date earlier this year, and changing it now would be too costly and difficult, said Lt. Clay Doss, a Navy spokesman. A long list of VIPs is invited, including former presidents, top Navy leadership and the Bush family.
Very rarely would I criticize the Navy, but....something about this just don't seem right.
Well it seems to me he is one step closer to becoming Blagoje"BITCH". Spitzer resigned and wasn't prosecuted. Maybe he should consider the same or be prepared to not drop the soap!
If You're a black girl you must be a prostitute: Examining the case of a 12 year old black girl who was beaten because the police assumed she was a prostitute when the description of the person that they were looking for was that of a white woman. They tell black woman that we don't have a right to be angry but after incidents like this how can we not be?
spirit_55z
Great post womanistmusings.
I feel outrage and I am deeply saddened. To even be asked to imagine imagining a 12 year old Black girl experiencing this horror in the United States.
How can a 12 year old Black girl be mistaken for a white prostitute? These mother fuckers had a physical description of the suspect, and still went after DYMOND!!!
All we have heard or seen since early June of this yeartil today and all we heard on the tv,'s Nancy Grace was a running sound bite of CAYLEE.
Where's CAYLEE???? Where's fucking CAYLEE? This is supposed to be a show about seeking justice. Another child's gone missing, but the child is white, she is female, she is valued, no mattter that the mother is the suspect in killing her. She still has value.
There's no justice for DYMOND (even her name shines like a gem) Where's DYMOND'S picture, where's DYMOND'S story of the brutality against her? She's invisible, missing, and unrecognized. We need to put a face and a name to DYMOND . Where's their picture, their dream, their story of what they aspire to be when she become a woman/man?

Not that I didn't alreday believe they were hers, my heart just stoopped beating for a minute. This is SO SAD! And unfotunately I believe this is just another story of a spoiled brat gone wrong. I believe (and I hope I am wrong!) that Casey killed Caylee because she wanted to site her mother and b/c she was not used to sharing the attention in addition to the fact that apparently she was not ready to be a parent in the first place!
I have said before and will say again, instead Casey needed an azz whupping long b/f Cindy choked her a month before Caylee's disappearance! I know this is hard for George and Cindy but I hope the lies on her behalf will stop. My personal opinion is that they stopped telling the hard and fast truth like they were in the beginning at the advise of Casey's attorney not to mention a little parental guilt. I think the attorney probably advised if you keep talking the way you have you will lose a daughter in addition to your granddaughter.
At any rate, little Caylee will not rest in peace!
Monica
I read somewhere that Casey wanted to have an abortion and her parents talked her out of it.
This just goes to show that not everyone should be a parent. Just because you have the equipment, does mean you have to use it.
tovangar2
I recall that Casey wanted to have her adopted by a friend who wanted Caylee but her parents said Casey had to keep her to learn responsibility. There may be another factor in this. Casey said after 5 mins. with Caylee, she needed a vacation. I'm guessing that both may have been ADHD and Caylee very hyperactive. I'm ADHD, as are my four kids, one of whom is extremely hyperactive (raising them on my own in a two bedroom apt has been...fun). I know there are days when you just want it to stop. I am in no way excusing Casey (ADHD isn't an excuse for anything), but untreated or ineffectively treated ADHD (if that was the problem in this case) can lead to some major tragedies, especially inside families. People need help before it gets this bad.
Lilytiger
One, I just want to acknowlege how great you are. Four kids are hard enough but on your own and in tight quarters. Well done. I hope you have good support around you because it is full on all the time.
Secondly, this child had no support from either mother or grandparents. The child ....I just think of her last moments and I get choked up... rest in peace, little one.
tovangar2
Yes, the Anthony case is a tragedy, anyway you look at it. I hope this doesn't sound too heartless, but I'm relieved in a way that the remains are Caylee's because otherwise there'd be two little girls we'd be worrying about.
I wanted to add that you are a doll baby, but I shouldn't get props for (as Chris Rock reminds us) doing what I'm supposed to be doing. I'm fine & having a much better life than my ex-husband who walked away from our kids because parenting them was "too hard".

Yeah I heard that also. Why couldn't she have just given that baby to her parents? They wanted her!
Monica
I think Casey's parents wanted to be grandparents and not necessarily raise their granddaughter.
It's evident the Casey did not want this child. I don't think had anything to do with mental illness and disability. This woman just did not want to be a mother. Period. Instead of during the right thing (in this case) leaving her with her parents, she took Caylee's life.
All I can do is shake my head and pray for that innocent baby who didn't ask to be born.

AgainstRacePolitics: As a teacher/administrator, we saw this kind of scenario - all 2 often!
We must PROTECT the children - even from their parents/guardians!
As MANDATED REPORTERS, we have a lot of leverage against abusive parents/guardians/family members/family friends.
On one occasion, an 11th grade female student came to my office and asked if she could stay there because she "COULDN'T" go home.
Seems as if she was being raised by her father. Her mother had died 3 years B4.
She stated that she thought that she could "ENDURE FOR 1 MORE YEAR" Then she could leave the house and live in the dorms at a college.
But, she said - - I CAN'T GO HOME and TAKE IT FOR ONE MORE DAY!!
You know- - - she was being ABUSED[sexually] for years!! And she was concerned about her younger sister.
She was visibly shaken! Crying! And I believed her because I knew her over the course of the 3 years. She was an excellent student and participated in student government, etc.
Well how long did you think it took me to call law enforcement!!
They didn't respond until 11:30pm. Yes, I stayed with her until they conducted their investigation and took her away.
Oh. The father called. I told him that I had seen his daughter. He wanted to come to the school. I told him that I would not be there. He didn't call any more. That was VERY TELLING to me. He didn't sound angry. He just wanted his daughter HOME! His attacks occurred everyday when she arrived home from school.
Ohhhhh. He needed to come to my office! I would have beat him . . . . > . .
At any rate, he was prosecuted!! My student was transferred; successfully graduated and went to college. She received appropriate counseling.

Is anyone else annoyed by the selective outrage from Rachel Maddow? As long as she and her network keep a seat at the table for Patrick "Kick all the Mexicans out and Darkies should thank the white man for slavery" Buchanan, her rants are just that.
Monie
Exactly NMP. Buchanan is the epitome of bigotry---if you just look at his Wilkepedia entry and read his views on different subjects, you will see he is a classic self-serving white supremacist. And yet, Ms. Rachel, along with MSNBC, still feels it is necessary to give him a voice, to be the voice of a different perspective. Buchanan has siad enough to make people outraged for a lifetime.....but I guess Rachel Maddow has no problem with that.
That said, we don't need to turn this into an(other) opportunity to gay bash with language.
We just don't. It's easier for some here than others to promote their anti-gay rants, but I'm not going to sit silently by and allow them to go unchallenged.
whiterosebuddy
When individuals who are gay use their anchor positions to create a controversy over the selection of Rev Warren ...it is not gay bashing to NOTE that homosexuals are disproportionally represented in the field of broadcasting or journalism.
It was not coincidental that blacks were scapegoated without a SHRED of data for Prop8 on CNN and MSNBC due to Cooper and Maddow.
That should not have gone unchallenged then and it should not go unchallenged now when those biases do not reflect those of the majority of viewers in this country.
If issues of this sort were covered on a HET or GET network FINE...but they are not ...this is CNN and MSNBC.!!
Moreover, it is not gay bashing to note that homosexuals disproportionately populate certain professions...it is a FACT. Anyone with a lick of sense knows that when it comes to theatre, arts or journalism there is a much greater preponderance of individuals who are homosexuals than there are in the population as a whole.
What is wrong is for perceptions to be skewed based on that disproportionate impact.
No one would consider it bashing blacks if they dominated the news coverage and focused on issues of color to a disproportionate degree than the majority of the society.
Rather, they would clearly see that it was biased coverage to the mainstream at large.
Michelle
Craig, I was reading your comment, re-reading NMP's comment and was like -- huh? What? No one's doing tha....
Then, I looked down.
Oh.
Ugly.
whiterosebuddy
What I find just too inconvenient is the number of gays who have their own shows and thus the platform to express their selective outrage.
Maddow and Cooper are both gay and both of them have used their shows to give their biased views on this issue.
Can you imagine if a black anchor, say like Tamron Hall or Max Robinson had used their shows to go on about the Robertson or that twelve year old arrested on the subway in DC or the Jasper Tx dragging death or the Jena6....they would not have their jobs!!
So, this is the type of difference in our society that makes me furious when GLBT issues are said to be analogous to civil rights. Nope. They aren't. Only gays get to shout out their biases from network perches!!

Justice58: Major Co-sign on the GRADUAL CHANGE! I noticed it just about that time 2!
I find myself "half-way" listening to her program NOW. Hmmmm.
whiterosebuddy
GreenLadyHere, The reason the noise level is disproportionate to the substance of the issue is because gays are disproportionately represented in the field of journalism. There was a survey done awhile back on this because the question was how did all this dis-information about homosexuality as relates to a 'genetic origin' find it's way into major newspapers, magazines and numerous articles when the scientist had not drawn any such conclusion but more over the actual scientist has refuted that conclusion.
What was discovered is that our newsrooms and newspaper groups are have a disproportionate number of gays...just like the arts and theatre.
Consequently, they are far more likely to push out unverifiable data when it comes to things such as 'sexual orientation' which is a theory as well without scientific evidence to support, along with 'blacks being the ones against Prop8' getting out there as the meme so early with NO data to support that scurrilous remarks.
What we are experiencing right now is the same thing with the noise over Warren. This is not an issue for most Americans.
However, the Maddows and Coopers, have the platform to make it a national issue and to project the perception that millions of Americans are upset ...when in reality they aren't.
We know they aren't because Prop8 was unable to pass in the bluest state in the Union...further we know it because 48% of folks voted against Obama and many of those millions LOVE Warren.
Cooper and Maddow may be the loudest voices in the room but they hold far from a majority opinion.

Securities Law Ex-SEC Lawyer Who Married into Madoff Family Said to be ‘Straight Arrow’
Posted 1 hour, 13 minutes ago By Debra Cassens Weiss
A former lawyer at the Securities and Exchange Commission who married the niece of Bernard Madoff has been described as a “straight arrow” whose work in the investigation of his future wife’s uncle was relatively minor.
Former and current SEC officials told the New York Times that Eric Swanson handled no major parts of failed Madoff investigations that ended without charges. Madoff has since been accused of running a Ponzi scheme that resulted in $50 billion in losses for the investors of his hedge fund, leading SEC Chairman Christopher Cox to call for an examination of contacts between SEC staff and Madoff’s family.
According to the Times, no evidence has been found indicating that Swanson continued working on any Madoff investigations after he became involved with his future wife, Shana Madoff, who was the compliance lawyer for her uncle’s firm.
A state lawmaker, motivated by swirling questions on whether President-elect Barack Obama meets the U.S. Constitution’s citizenship requirement, said Thursday he will file a bill requiring anyone who files for office in Oklahoma to show proof of citizenship.
So it begins.
Val
lol andddd where are the requests for McCain's citizenship status?
Oh wait . . . as soon as this stuff about questioning McCain's citizenship status started to swirl Obama put his signature to a document to put that nonsense to bed.

I'm still not to keen on this guy (Hillary photo on facebook didn't help) and I wish the Obama camp could have found a person of color who was an English/PR/Communication professional instead of some 27-year old white guy who could have likely gotten a job anywhere...but I guess I shouldn't be a hater :-)

the guy is brilliant. Obama did the right thing to select someone who understood him and was the best person to help him get his message across. That Hillary thing was stupid but he is a young and sometimes they do stupid things. I am sure he learnd from that experience.

Yeah, the Hillary photo was a disaster. However, I find Favreau's four-year, very complex relationship with BHO fascinating. And yes, he's white but weirdly he almost looks like the P-E in some photos (especially when they're together). Maybe it's the haircut and the way they hold themselves. I don't think Favreau's single-white-femaling Barack, it's more like that's how he can do the job. He already does his best to share a brain with Obama.
I didn't take it as a disaster; I took it as him being a kid.
Obviously, he's very talented....and on top of the world. There's nowhere for him to go after this.

Obama settled on California Rep. Hilda Solis for labor secretary and former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk for U.S. trade representative, officials said Thursday. He was ready to introduce Republican Rep. Ray LaHood of Illinois as transportation secretary at a news conference Friday afternoon.
Peoria, Illinois
I know you all have heard the saying "Will it Play in Peoria". It's Peoria's claim to fame, that Caterpillar Corporate and Ray LaHood (along with an extensively entrenched LaHood family). People were beside themselves when Donny Deutsch came to town. Peoria is constantly featured on the national news as a barometer for the nation.
If Peoria is a barometer for the nation - my people we are in trouble. Racism and interracial dating (black men w/white women) is rampant. To get a taste of the sheer racism that is espoused daily in the local newspaper, check out this article:
The local "black newspaper" is cut and paste (the header hasn't changed since it's incorporation some 30 years ago) and the articles are canned and don't address any of the issues in the community. None. They get tens of thousands in community reinvestment dollars, but the newspaper is junk.
The President of the Illinois NAACP lives in Peoria. They are virtually inactive. Our schools are crumbling. The only time they showed up to protest was when white PTO moms got mad about the change in school times. They let the PTO use the race card.
Around here they take pride in the saying "so goes Peoria, so goes the Nation". I pray daily that this statement is not true.
I am not struggling with imagining being beautiful as a woman.
But my imagination needs a beautiful man to struggle with.

Of the 119 college football "Bowl Division" teams, only 3--three!--are Black. Since coaches are basically hired via the good ole boy system, I'd say it's time for a good old fashioned college sit-in.
Better yet, Black college players should start refusing to take the field until this travesty is addressed.

Up until at least the year 2000, the school that had produced the most NFL players in the history of the league was Grambling. FAMU, Southern and Tennessee State have put more guys in the NFL than Texas, Ohio State and Georgia. Those numbers will certainly shift as they have so rapidly been doing for the last 20 years simply because for some reason, so many HS athletes who want to go pro believe their chances are better at the "bowl" schools because of the exposure...and it doesnt hurt when a booster is about to give Mama and nem a monthly stipend on your behalf.
Refusing to play doesn't solve the problem. People were saying yesterday that if the black players started boycotting schools, that would drive change...but I don't see that happening either.
I think the best solution would be for some of the HBCUs-Howard, FAMU, Grambling, etc-that are currently playing at I-AA (this "bowl division" and "championship division" crap doesn't work for me) to move up to Division I, and show themselves capable of playing-and winning-at that level.
Course, that takes money.....
Nate_Wesley
I think many of the HBCUs are falling way behind in being athletically competitive in any other way than the level of the conference that they're in. In other words, they can keep up with other SWAC or MEAC teams, but outside of other HBCUs , it could get ugly.
Peruse the ESPN bottom line when an Alabama State or a Grambling faces off against another D-I school in basketball. They don't have to be a Duke or North Carolina or a Tennessee or a Memphis. They could be a Butler, a Bradley, or a Wofford, and you might see the HBCU get blasted. Same thing happens if the SWAC team happens to face off against a non-conference opponent in football, say like a Samford or a Western Carolina in football.
I wonder if the 'classics', as well attended as they can be, are actually putting money back into the coffers of the schools that play in them. I can look at football schedules and see HBCU teams that play a 12 game schedule, but only have like four true home games, with some away and several 'classics' at a neutral site. But home games are the only games where all of the ticket and concession sales come back to the university; they're also the only games that you can invite prospective recruits (per NCAA rules--'Bama State just found out what happens when you don't follow them).
Dare I say it, there might be some HBCU programs that might benefit from moving down to Divsion-II.
Town
These schools want to win. Winning = money.
These schools need black players to win. No black players, no win, no money.
If X University refused to recruit more black academic students or ignored a hostile environment for black students and the black players said "We're going to sign on with Z University instead," X University would change their tune.
If black HS senior players looking at Auburn said "Whycome you hired this 5-19 dude b/c he was white but didn't hire this black dude over here, naw man, we're bypassing you and going to ABC University instead," Auburn might change it's tune.
It's not about Grambling and Howard and FAMU showing white people that blacks are just as capable of winning and playing at that level --- white people already know this.
There's no sense in complaining about it if you're not going to do anything about it. And if black players and black fans don't put their money with their mouth is and force changes with their pocketbook, nothing will change.
RonnieB
Exactly, Town. Black players--and they mama's--are the key to changing this. And since the problem is so widespread, they might as well target the most blatant examples; and right now it's Auburn. They went out of their way to hire a white coach with a losing record, and about to get fired, and avoided at all costs hiring Turner Gill who turned about the University of Buffalo's football program.
If Black high school prospects and their parents made a point of saying NO to Auburn (and other SEC schools) because of their century-long refusal to hire Black head coaches, it would at least send a message to other schools that athletes are aware and aren't so willing to sell out to the monied schools.
It's not about Grambling and Howard and FAMU showing white people that blacks are just as capable of winning and playing at that level --- white people already know this.
Obviously they don't, because I-AA schools make the schedules of D-I schools for the express purpose of getting beaten.
I just don't think protest is the best answer, cause at the end of the day, people will just stop looking at the protesters.
But if Hampton (what I meant to type instead of Howard) joins the ACC and starts beating the likes of VA Tech, Florida State and Miami on a regular basis...well, that kind of makes the talent pool-not just the players, but the coaches as well-hard to ignore.
RonnieB
Not only is that the passive way out; the results are limited. Hampton beating VA Tech once in a while is in no way an adequate response to Black coaches' wholesale exclusion from the head coaching ranks.
What you're advocating is for Black men to prove themselves by being so good that White folks can't help but notice.
My friend, that's been done. It was called the Negro Leagues.
But it hasn't been done in college football. Obviously, it can happen....and probably with a better outcome than an all out protest.
Town
"Obviously they don't, because I-AA schools make the schedules of D-I schools for the express purpose of getting beaten."
White universities and pro teams know that blacks are the keys to winning...THAT'S WHY THEY RECRUIT THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE.
If these schools didn't think that black players would put them on the road to a championship, they wouldn't recruit them. They ain't recruiting the black students for their academic prowess, that's for sure. And if the black student gets injured and can't play anymore, well bye bye to that student, because he's of no use to the school anymore.
So knowing that black athletes = winning = money, black athletes are the key to changing this around. The question is will they, and we know most of them won't (or their mommas won't) because of the goodies they get. They have a "I got mine, you go get yours" mentality. This is why things won't change. You're not going to protest against someone giving you a free ride to school and a stipend when you have limited choices unless you have a strong moral conviction about yourself.
Saying that Hampton and Howard and FAMU need to prove to white people that blacks can win is silly because it puts the burden on the blacks to change the whites' behaviors, instead of putting the burden on WHITES to change their own behavior.
You said, "I just don't think protest is the best answer, cause at the end of the day, people will just stop looking at the protesters."
This is PRECISELY why the Republicans will NEVER pay black Republicans any mind, because black Republicans are bound and determined to take crap from racist white Republicans because "if we protest, we'll be ignored." You're already being ignored.
People don't listen to words, they listen to action. And if Raykwon, JoJo and Tavaris decide to bypass a program like Auburn to go to X University instead because of Auburn's policies, and Auburn starts losing, and Auburn losing = less money, Auburn will change it's tune.
And even if Auburn doesn't change their tune, you can rest your soul easy that you aren't putting money into Auburn's pockets.
When people decide to vote with their dollars, change will happen and if the organization decides not to change, it will die. Simple as that.
Circuit City has been treating its' workers badly for years. From the discrimination suit to firing all the people who knew stuff to bring in cheaper people, to firing those people and bringing in people cheaper than that, people have been turned off to Circuit City. They got rid of products people wanted to buy and didn't listen to their customers. The customers may not have protested out of the stores, but they went elsewhere. Now CC is bankrupt and will probably not be in business this time next year. People voted with their dollars, CC didn't take heed, now its' on its' deathbed.
Another example: The GOP is drawing the circle smaller and smaller, excluding everyone except white evangelical Christians. If you disagree, you must be thrown out of the GOP. People may not protest outside of the GOP headquarters, but they went elsewhere. Now that they got their ass spanked by a BLACK guy, now the GOP wants to "reach out" to minorities and diversify. That would never have been said if they hadn't gotten their asses spanked last month. Change or die.
It's not even about "protest," it's about choice. If black athletes choose not to play for X team because of racism and choose to lend their talents elsewhere until X team changes, I have no problem with that and encourage it. And if X team DOESN'T change, then at least the athlete will have the pleasure of knowing they didn't pimp themselves out to X team and help X team and organization line their pockets at their expense.
Miranda

That's it in a nutshell....Bear Bryant did not start recruiting black boys because he had an epiphany one night that he needed to reach out and teach the state of Alabama about diversity in sports...HE WANTED TO WIN.
You can force change through protest-which may not bode too well in the end-or you can step up to someone else's level, kick their ass, and remove any doubt that you're not capable.
Maybe I'm more confrontational.
RonnieB
While it would be good if Grambling, Howard, etc., stepped up to D-1, that puts the burden on the HBCUs. They didn't create this problem. The rest of the good ole boy system did.
It seems to that there a very few ways to address this problem. After all, it's not just one or two schools who are the consistent offenders. It's essentially ALL of college football. If it were just Auburn or just Clemson, the focus could be different. But it's almost impossible to boycott every school.
That's why I think a targeted time and place for a "Black-out" would serve a good purpose. I mean, what if Florida and Oklahoma's Black players said that they weren't going to take the field for the national championship unless the SEC hired 3 Black head coaches before next season?
At some point, the tail has to wag the dog.
Miranda
Grambling, Howard etc don't have to step up to D-1. Jake Gaither, Eddie Robinson and the like were churning out winning programs and sending more guys to the pros than any other school in the country for the longest times. Believe it or not, there was a time when the SWAC and MEACgames were noted for the game and not just the halftime show. But when the boosters of some of these schools realized they wanted those players they started throwing money around to get them. Have any of you SEEN a football dorm at a school like Auburn or Alabama or Florida? Bo Jackson drove a PORSCHE his sophomore year at Auburn. Famu and Grambling don't have to step up to D-1 because there's no reason to when you can't compete with the money these D-1 boosters and alumni use to drive D-1 programs.
But why can't they compete? The talent's there, the resources are there......
Town
The black guy (Gill?) at Auburn DID compete...he competed against a white guy who had a 5-19 record who was getting ready to get fired and lost out because he was 1) black 2) had a white wife.
All the Hamptons and FAMUs could win all the games in the world and it still does not change the fact that Auburn did not want this "Guess who's coming to dinner" Negro as their head coach.
Your argument is like asking "Why can't Norfolk State (no offense to NSU) compete against UVA?" when asked why UVA doesn't have more black professors. Norfolk State competing against UVA doesn't have anything to do with UVA not having more black professors, as Hampton & Grambling not competing against VA Tech or Florida has nothing to do why there aren't more black coaches in college sports.
We're talking about a situation where white guys with consistent LOSING records are getting jobs over black guys with winning records because "some people" are uncomfortable with having a black coach. How are you going to "compete" when even the losers "win" because of how the game is set up?
RonnieB
That's why I suggested that D. was advocating a passive, almost servile, approach. The SEC schools could care less if Grambling and FAMU are going undefeated; that they've got running backs with 4.2 speed; and kickers who can nail 70-yard field goals.
These necks down here in the South believe that the head football coach is to be revered. And they ain't about to revere the likes of a Turner Gill (especially with his White wife).
Miranda
No the talent is NOT there, the resources are NOT there...ANYMORE. Where do you think all of the blue-chip prospects go to first in the state of Florida?? Florida, FSU, Miami.....where do they go first in Alabama? UA and Auburn. It has changed. That's why the Gramblings, FAMUs and Southerns cant compete. The resource differences are astronomical. I dare you to look at the facilities for Alabama State Univ and the Univ of Alabama and come away with it being even close to just being lopsided.
Nate_Wesley
Miranda is right. There are many programs at the 1-AA level finding it hard to keep up. It's more than just football, at the Division I level you have to pay for and sponsor many more sports than if you were a 1-AAA (D-1 with NO football) or a Division II school.
Hell, compare my alma mater (UAB) to the facilities at the University of Alabama. Both play in 1A/FBS, but one program is in its 13th season in fielding a football team period, while the other has been rocking it out in the SEC for over 70 years (over 100 in football, overall). If there's that disparity there, you know there's going to be one with the FAMUs & Gramblings of the world.
whiterosebuddy
RonnieB,
I am puzzled by this intense desire to make black players the victims of a system they are only seeking to excel in.
In other words, why is there not a corresponding clamor for black MINDS to go only to HBCU's...should black scholars at Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Michigan, USC and Emory...only go to HBCU's....too?
If not.
We need to halt this specious argument of leveraging athletes becasue they are excellent and HAPPEN to be black as well.
RonnieB
You're not puzzled; you just disagree with more Black head coaches in a system that wholly depends on Black athletes.
whiterosebuddy
No, I would LOVE to have more black coaches. I have no problem with that.
I simply don't agree with your reasoning. Like I said, how come you are only focused on black athletes not being able to choose to compete at the best schools.
If we use your reasoning all the excellent black minds should boycott Harvard Yale, Columbia and Michigan so that those insitutions will hire more black professors and give them tenure.
Your logic makes no sense.
You need to put forth a better argument.
Having more black coaches would be wonderful but your route to get their is FLAWED and penalizes black athletes.
Miranda
I hear you, but I'm really not sympathetic to the black players at these Football Factory Plants. The black players at Florida should have been at FAMU or Bethune Cookman in the first place if they wanted to support a black coach. I can tell you right now that it wasnt the sterling academic program in "General Education" or "Undeclared" that made them decide to go to UF.
RonnieB
But it's not so much seeking sympathy for Black players as it is doing the right thing by Black coaches. The players are oblivious to all this. And the big White schools prefer it that way.
After all, White fans, alumni, boosters and media aren't any more sympathetic to Black players than they are to Black coaches. The 18 year old kid who's looking at a pro career doesn't realize the importance of a Black head coach until he's 32, out of football, with few marketable occupational skills.
Miranda
Which is why he should be over at FAMU or Bethune Cookman. If its a pro career he seeks, and he's actually pro caliber, NFL scouts will find him. In the meantime, he will probably HAVE to actually go to class.
If "Jamal B.," football player from X University gets injured and can't play anymore, his scholarship is gone, too.
My old classmate Jeff found that out when he got injured and couldn't play ball anymore. The school yanked his scholarship, room & board, etc. so fast it would make your head spin. Luckily for him, he had the grades AND his parents could afford the out of state tuition so he could continue on at the school and graduate. Most other players aren't so fortunate.
These schools know they don't have to do right by the black coaches because the black kids will fall into lock step or go back to the hood. These schools know they will get paid without a black coach because Tremaine G. is bringing them acclaim and $$$ everytime he jumps into the end zone. If Tremaine G. decided not to play for X school and went elsewhere, and other black kids did the same, X University's program would suffer and they'd change their tune.
When you mess with people's money, they change their tune.
RonnieB
College students who staged sit-ins and protests against segregation suffered worse consequences.
Yeah, but you're talking about people who may/may not graduate in the first place (the "may/may not get drafted" thought doesn't occur until too late in the process). Pull their scholarships, and they're relegated to schools with less visibility, or junior colleges.
Why do you think they stay risk adverse-for the most part-as professionals?
RonnieB
I ain't hirin' no nigras as head coaches. So ... boy ... if you wo na play ball, ye bess change yer att'tude.
Or go play at Gramblin'.
I will be teaching my kids NEVER to make that deal with that devil.
I'm pushing my kid(s) to the service academies....though I wouldn't make that deal either.

This clown coached a basketball game last night with the full support of his university. The good ole boy system protects its own.
Ole Miss basketball coach Kennedy arrested Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network)
Ole Miss men's basketball head coach Andy Kennedy was arrested early Thursday morning, charged with assault.
In the police report, Kennedy, who was arrested at 1:15 a.m., is alleged to have punched a taxi driver while shouting racial slurs. Ole Miss' director of basketball operations, Bill Armstrong, was also arrested, on a charge of disorderly conduct.
"Clearly, this is an unfortunate situation. However, after a full discussion with Andy Kennedy and his staff, who were with him, I have the utmost confidence that once all the facts are known, Coach Kennedy will be cleared of all charges," athletics director Pete Boone said in the statement.
The complaint filed states that Kennedy "punched victim with a closed fist while shouting racial slurs." The complaint, filed in Hamilton County Municipal Court, lists Mohammed Ould Jiddou as the victim.
Miranda
Jiddou said Kennedy then began yelling, cussing him and calling him "bin Laden, Saddam Hussein," and hit him in the face. Police said the left side of Jiddou's face was swollen; at his northern Kentucky home more than 12 hours later, he had no apparent injuries and said he wasn't hurt physically but was upset to be compared to the terrorist leader.
"[Osama] bin Laden killed 3,000 people in this country. I never hurt no one," Jiddou said. "How can he tell me that? I'm working hard. I don't want to hear anything like that." http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=377...
The director of basketball operations for Ole Miss had already been thrown out of a bar for being drunk...and he was with Kennedy....but no suspensions or anything.
whiterosebuddy
The racial slur....HOLD ON!! are you ready for IT?
He called the man BIN LADEN!!
That's right, calling someone Bin Laden is being described as a racial slur.
Is THAT a racial slur?
If you call a German...Adolf Hitler....is that a racial slur?
If you call a black man ...MalcolmX ...is that a racial slur?
If you call a Jewish person...Mearshiemer...is that a racial slur?
If you call a Italian person...Al Capone...is that a racial slur?
Alexander
My primary point is that the guy was arrested for an assault and allowed to coach the very next night. The reports I've read state that he called the victim "Bin Laden" among other racial slurs. I agree, I don't think Bin Laden is a racial slur but it does sound like an ugly situation.
Could someone please tell me how to hypertext(?). I'm new at this. Thanks.
A 49-year-old Florida woman says her former church is threatening to reveal her sins to its congregation after learning that she is in a "sexually immoral relationship."
Rebecca Hancock told FOXNews.com that Grace Community Church, a non-denominational church in Jacksonville, Fla., was against her relationship with boyfriend Frank Young because the two were sexually active but not married.
Miranda
I just read the entire story...there is nothing "Christian" about that church or its decision to publicly humiliate somebody in the "name of Jesus".
whiterosebuddy
my, my, My, MY!!
Sounds like the Christian thing to do. When folks walk up into the Christian faith, they need to pracitce it. It is the obligation of the Christian faith to support and guide its members on the christian path of living.
If you do not want to live like a Christian ...folks need to stop going into Christian communitys and thinking they can live any ol lifestyle they choose.
This is what happens when the church decides to become activist in its role about its beliefs. I do beleive they call this proselytizing and spreading the goespel and living via Christian tenets.
Yoo hoo!!...out the sinners.
jonster
Lord, I am so tired of the swooning hordes of Amen junkies who pop out of their stupors long enough to damn someone to hell.
whiterosebuddy
Go to church and tell them about it!
jonster
Do you think they'd listen? I think there are more sinners in church than out of it. They're all hoping for salvation for their own souls by pointing out others who they think are worse off. But it won't work.
whiterosebuddy
Of course they would listen.
I agree that the church is FULL of sinners, typically those are the folks that are in need of the Christian faith. The church would not exist without sinners. So, it is right that the church should be full of them.
I think that folks in church are praying for their own strength to live in the chirsitian faith and could care less about anyone else's soul. After all, each soul is born alone and with it's own unique spirit. The christian community is suppose to help guide and support them ln the struggle to live by those christian tenets.
What won't work is for folks to abandon Christian beliefs and believe they are being Christian. God has already granted them salvation, all they have to do is adhere to the tenets of the faith.
....but does that still hold when you start outing church officials?
That's why I think it's over the line. Isn't there something in scripture about getting the plank out of your eye before you take on someone else's?
whiterosebuddy
The position of the official does not matter. If anything it would be of greater consequence since that person is in a position of greater authority...thus even more would be demanded of them in terms of faith.
So, are they christian? Are they claiming and posturing and presenting themselves as being a Christian in a Christian community?
If so, then it is the obligation of Christians to ask them to repent their sin. Or to stop sinning and seek redemption. That is a core principle of the Christina faith.
Christian's are called to use Christian beliefs to judge those who are not acting in Christian beliefs. That is to bring about greater adherence to those beliefs and to show compassion for those when they are unable to uphold their beliefs by providing support to do so.
Not to judge is to lack the moral discernment to adhere to Christian beliefs.
But I think I can say with a fair amount of certainty (sp?) that if black churches started doing this, it'd be tantamount to suicide. If Catholics were on this program, their priesthood would be decimated.
I think, at the end of the day, it'd prove to be an unfairly applied standard.
whiterosebuddy
I think we are going to see a greater demand for church to impose the christian way of living as a backlash to how the church is under assault by 'alternate lifestyles' which claim they are Christians too...BUT ...want to be embraced by Christians without living Christian tenets.
I think the church has a moral obligation to do this. Especially, in the black community where 70% of children are born out of wedlock.
I do not think the standard is applied unfairly, if the person is trying to present themselves as a part of the Christian community. The christian community is obligated to act and has been derelict in doing so the past 2 decades and it is now at a moral low point.
At the end of the day, this will turn out to be a good thing. It may be just the right road to restoring the accountability on the part of males who indiscriminately use females as sperm receptacles...and it may be the support young women need not to be a sperm receptacle.
Afterall, the only proof of premarital sex is pregnancy...so Birth control ...birth control birth control if you want to engage in premarital sex and not be outed would be the answer and I am all for birth control.
Any thing that decreases the out of wedlock rate in the black community is a very positive move in the right direction.
progress!!

It is not their place to advertise her sins without confessing and advertising their own. He who is without sin please cast the first stone. What happened to being counseled by the pastor. good grief.
Justice58
Rory,
God always does things decent and in order. This is Scripture guidelines for handling sheep that has strayed away.
Matthew 18:15-17
The Pastor is Shepherd over his flock. He will be held accountable for his sheep because he is overseerer, watchman for their soul.
If a brother sin...It is the Shepherd's duty to go to the brother and tell him his fault alone
If the brother hears..all is well!
But if he doesn't....Then the Shepherd shall take 2 or 3 witnesses with him because Scripture says in the mouth of 2 or 3 witnesses every word is established.
If the brother yet neglect to hear them..Then it is the Shepherd's duty to take it to the Church!
GreenLadyHere
Justice58: Nice DOCUMENTATION! :>) But, the text reads: "Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. . . So, ALL congregants have this responsibility, NOT just the PASTOR. Annnd, the environment is to be loving, annnd, the purpose is for RECONCILIATION.
But, if she has left [as rorysmomma asked] I believe that the church has no more "standing" in THIS matter.
But, other congregants have been notified of the process and can either leave or stay. IMHO
Justice58
GreenLady,
Right. That 's why I posted below the Shepherd has a duty to his flock, if she has left the church, then she is no longer considered a part of that body.
I agree with your post about the "other congregants"!

Justice58:
O.K. Missed that! :>)
Apologies! :>)
rorysmomma
Well now that she has left the flock is it still his duty?
Justice58
The Shepherd has a duty to his flock. If she has left that church and goes to another then the same Scriptural guideline apply. Rory, sometimes when people don't want to come under submission...they start Church hopping. I'm sure you've probably seen it happen. I have.
The Sheep are to be submissive to their Shepherd! He is the watchman of their soul!
whiterosebuddy
We disagree, as Christians it is there place. As Christians they are called to do precisely that. The call to do so, does not say you have to tell your own sins in order to tell someone elses.
I do not think the woman should be condemned. She should be forgiven and admonished not to continue to sin.
What happened to being counseled is that pastors have not stood up to and imposed their moral authority.
I'm with you....but if I'm an occasional church goer (which I am), and I hear a preacher tell me "render to Caesar what is his, and unto God what is His," and then a week later, I see that same preacher going to jail for tax fraud....
See what I'm getting at?

I agree, Justice. The Word stands!
And I also wonder why this lady is the only one to be outed for her sins???? I mean, if this is the way to go then everyone should be treated the same including the minister. Let he is without sin cast the first stone.
Justice58
We may not know the entire story. Maybe she is being rebellious?
Yes. The same apply to the Minister as well.
whiterosebuddy
D. Sinners are hypocritical.
Yet, that is no reason to abandon the effort to strive to be Christian.
If your parent tells you what is right and then you see them do wrong, does that mean your parent is somehow wrong for having tried to guide you in the right way?
No one is perfect. Living a Christian life is not easy for humans that is why God had to change the covenant and let his son die for the sins. After 40 years in the wilderness, 'the chosen' still were sinning. Which is why God granted a new covenant to grant salvation and demand only that you abide in the Christian faith and beleive it.
The Christian faith forgives sinners, even hypocrites.
It is not an excuse to sin by saying ..'you did it' so you can't tell me anything' ..t.hat is a cop out. It is avoiding accountability based on someone else's foibles, when you are only called to account for your own.
Folks should rejoice when they learn how they are not living in the christian way and find their way back to their faith not bytch whine and moan about somebody else being a hypocrite.
Justice58

The elders in that church is trying to do the job of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit's job to convict! They want to bring about conviction through humiliation.

I loved the commentary from the Mudflats blog on this topic. I will just post my favorite parts.
ehh ehhmmmm (clearing throat)
Levi Johnston sat with Bristol and the rest of the Palin family in St. Paul, Minn., during Gov. Palin’s speech to the Republican National Convention, and he joined the family on the stage afterwards.
When asked about the arrest, Palin’s spokesman, Bill McAllister, issued the following statement by e-mail: “This is not a state government matter. Therefore the governor’s communications staff will not be providing comment or scheduling interview opportunities.”
I’m sure they won’t. They’re not going to touch this one with a ten foot pole. Answering questions about whether your grandchild may have been conceived in a crack house, or a meth lab is not on anyone’s list of things they want to do today. And the fact that this arrest comes just two days before Bristol’s stated due date just adds a whole other layer of unbelievability.
We last heard from Sherry Johnston, back when Levi joined the Palins on the campaign trail. At that time,
Sherry Johnston said she was worried about her son dealing with all the attention. She said it is difficult enough for teenagers to deal with any pregnancy; having the entire nation watching makes it worse.
Levi Johnston, a hockey player for Wasilla High School, is not listed on the team roster for 2008-09, and his mother wouldn’t say if he graduated. She said simply he’s no longer a student and any further information would have to come from him.
The intense media scrutiny has stunned this suburban community about 40 miles north of Anchorage, with reporters camping out near the Johnston home.
“This is out of my league,” Sherry Johnston said. “I’m just a country gal, and I want to keep it that way.”
Well, gee then, it probably would have been a good idea not to be cookin’ up drugs in your house. Just sayin’.
OK, everybody, all together now. You can’t make this stuff up.
"how close have Levi’s mother and Sarah Palin been during Levi and Bristol’s relationship? Has Sarah been pal’in around with a drug dealer?"

Alex Anders of NBC News: And what kind of info did you get?
Gayle: I'ts a long story, I got to tell you. I'm afraid of what's gonn happen to this country.
Alex: What would you think would happen? Do you think it would become Crack country?
Gayle: She hangs out with her future son-in-law's mama. She cooks and sells crack. Alaska.....America would become "Crack Country." Alex: And what about her kids? Gayle: The pregnant one would be in jeopardy. She's preggers you know.
Gayle to McCain: "Palin's a Crackhead." McCain: "No, no mam, she's not." Gayle: "She isn't?" McCain: No, she just pals around with her daughter's boyfriend's mama, who's a crack dealer."
snark ON/Darn that drug dealer! Poisoning the youth in that community! Where are the parents! Oh, She's the parent.....uh, never mind...she's just GOTTA get treatment! Hard time would be just TOO traumatic/snark OFF

nickwah22: LOL! :>) :>) The other has a journalism degree from college in general
-Er, -ummm That would be 5 colleges in 6 years!
ABSOLUTELY NO!! For a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that Mrs. Kennedy speaks in coherent sentences!
Annnnnnd, she is NOT SMARMY/SNARKY/SARCASTIC! :>)

No, Caroline is not our Palin. Caroline is not responsible for leading the nation if something happens to the President. Caroline has spent a lifetime in service to the country via philantrophic deeds as well as honoring and promoting philantrophic acts of kindness by others. Palin, used the tax payers money to purchase over $200K in clothes and makeup. Palin is a spokesmodel. Kennedy is a rolemodel. Palin hunts moose. Kennedy raises millions of dollars for education.

rikyrah: Ima start this post by getting my "LAFF OUT FIRST!" :>) :>) I'll EXPLAIN! :>)
The NAACP Hollywood Bureau today announced its latest findings in a new report titled “Out of Focus, Out of Sync—Take 4″ that shows the entertainment industry, particularly television, continues to fall seriously short in achieving diversity.
NAACP officials warned that without quick action to reverse the bleak statistics cited in the 40-page report, the industry could face political action.
“At a time when the country is excited about the election of the first African-American president in U.S. history, it is unthinkable that minorities would be so grossly under-represented on broadcast television,” said NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous.
“Perpetrating the situation is the fact that the few African Americans in higher positions in that industry lack power to green light new series’ or make final creative decisions, which has translated into a critical lack of primetime programming by, for, or about people of color,” said NAACP Hollywood Bureau Executive Director Vicangelo Bulluck.
The “Take 4″ report cites statistics that show an ongoing trend where African Americans and other minorities continue to be under-represented in nearly every aspect of television and film businesses, while largely being denied access to significant positions of power in Hollywood.
Specifically, the report reveals that employment and promotion opportunities for minorities are directly tied to highly subjective practices, a closed roster system and potentially discriminatory guild membership practices.
The serious shortage of minority faces on primetime television can also be traced to the virtual disappearance of black programming since the merger of UPN and WB networks into The CW network, according to the report.
To help remedy the situation, the report recommends the establishment of a task force comprised of network executives, educators and NAACP advocacy partners to update the Memorandum of Understanding between the networks and the NAACP and its coalition partners. The goal would be to create best practice standards throughout the industry.
“The NAACP has a long history of working in partnership with the networks, studios, guilds, agencies and others to create substantive opportunities for people of color in front of and behind the camera,” Bulluck added.
EXPLANATION: Didn't we JUST have a conversation that was similar to this? We read a study on PREJUDICE in EMPLOYMENT. We JUST had a "thread" on "1 eff-up - - - get fired!"
Annnnnnnnd, here we go - - "once more and again!" :>) ***shakin' my head***
I just saw a promo on the SAG Awards. I didn't see any reason to watch that show, based on the announcements of the "BESTs" announced [except for the award to James Earl Jones. If there are others, please ADVISE. :>)]
BUT, there is PAUCITY in the "diversity" ranks!!! What's up with that?? ***shrugs***
I am a great believer in DATA/STATISTICS; BUT these are so SCARCE that it hardly take a full-blown STUDY to produce and/or analyze SPARSE DATA!!!
LAWD HA'MERCY!!! WHEW!!! DEEP BREATHS!!! :>)
Annnnd, it's not going to get any better under these economic conditions!! Humf!!
P.S. God Bless the Brotha & Sista ENTREPRENEURS in this industry!! :>)
Green Lady, this is another episode in "Why the NAACP is still Searching for Relevance".
They produce these reports, but the industries for which they are aimed are used and have become IMMUNE to the NAACP crying and whining about disparities - Craig had a point on the posts yesterday - essentially power will concede NOTHING without a DEMAND.
We have to DEMAND shyt or refuse to patronize their businesses - that's all. Money talks and bullshyt walks. They want our dollars but NOT US. That shyt has to stop.
MLK had it right - we didn't gain anything until we withheld our resources from their asses. We need another 1955-like Bus Boycott AGAIN. Those dirty SOBs were brought to their knees in 1955 when Missy couldn't keep a clean house or served a cooked meal, and Mr. Charlie couldn't lift that barge or tote that pail because Beulah and LeRoy couldn't come to work unless they caught the Montgomery Buses. Some of those Saltines actually drove to Black neighborhoods and picked up their employees - You know the story.
We have to resort to the same strategies today. You can damn well believe the economy would miss the $6-60 billion Black people spend into it if it were reduced to less than $1 billion.

Yes, but by 1965...Missy hired Jose, Juan, Teresa, and Maria to do those jobs. They went from Negro to J-lo, for services.

Speaking of "diversity" when I was in NYC yesterday, I was checking out the department store holiday windows. Based on the windows, it as if no people of color live in NYC. While I will say an artist has the power to interpret his vision in his/her own way-come on folks. At one point, I saw a man (white) leaning down talking to his child (Asian) about the windows. Wonder what he told her?
GreenLadyHere
Librarian: HEY! :>)
IMHO, he just had to do "WARM-FUZZY"-SPEAK! He sure didn't have to EXPLAIN "WHYCOME" EVEN ONE of the statues was "THAT FUNNY COLOR!"
That Asian child is going to grow up thinking like White folks and get her feelings straight hurt when she's called a "chink" to her face because her parents aren't giving her the cultural preparation she needs to deal in America.
And I bet she was adopted from one of those Chinese orphanages because of the one-child rule in China and she wasn't a male child.
islandgirl550
Speaking of the windows...I work in midtown, around the corner from ST. Pats...I waited for 2 hours to see the windows at Saks...It was about some special snowflake. Sigh! Guess I didn't know the book or the story. To think about it... I've never seen any characters of color in any of the windows.

islandgirl550: ***sigh***
Guess THEY forgot that "WE OVERCAME!" :>) :>)
Annnnnd, we TOLD THEM back in the 60's!! WHEW!!! ***shakin' my head***

I live in NJ now, so I don't see the windows every year. You are right, no memories of people of color in the windows. However, I was hoping for some progress.

rikyrah: MUDFLATS is doing a 12 days of Christmas series, also. :>)
It’s official. Tomorrow, former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan will file his paperwork, and throw his hat in the ring as a candidate for the Anchorage mayoral seat about to be vacated by current Mayor Mark Begich.
Begich will head to Washington D.C. as Alaskas Junior Senator and leave the Chair of the Anchorage Assembly, Matt Claman in the role of Acting Mayor until the election in the spring.
Matt Claman has been unwilling to say whether he will run for the seat he will temporarily occupy between January and April, or not. My guess is that he will not. His wishy-washiness to date has been aggravating, and the fact that there are already two strong progressive candidates in Croft and Selkregg means that the addition of Claman and the potential splitting of the vote could feasibly result in Dan Sullivan being elected, which many would consider disastrous.
The mayoral field is crowded. Monegan will be running against Anchorage Assembly member Sheila Selkregg, former legislator Eric Croft, former Assembly member Dan Sullivan, and former police spokesman Paul Honeman.
Monegan has recently spoken at the Bartlett Democratic Club Luncheon, and also at the University of Alaska. The theme for his talks was “ethics in government.” Alaskans are generally not familiar with that term.[HAH!! :>)]
And what does he have to say about the ethics of our current Governor?
“I think there could be improvement. Let me put it that way.”
Monegan is not giving details of his campaign until the paperwork is filed tomorrow.
His ouster at the hands of Sarah Palin, and the ensuing ethics investigation which found her guilty of abuse of power had the effect of catapulting Monegan into the national spotlight. His support in Anchorage is widespread both among law enforcement personnel and the public at large. He will be a formidable opponent.
Let the games begin!
This is going to be FUN!! "The Gov." MIGHT still have ta work with him!! :>) :>)
THE first grandchild of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is a boy, her father, Chuck Heath, revealed to Grandparents.com. Heath said his pregnant granddaughter, Bristol Palin, has a due date of Dec. 20. Asked what Bristol and the child's still unmarried father, Levi Johnston, will name the baby, Heath answered, "Oscar . . . No, I'm just kidding. They don't have a name for it yet." Heath said Palin has more than 200 media requests, plus 87 boxes of unopened mail from all over the world.
-Er, -um NO NAME, NO MARRIAGE - - - - WHAT do they KNOW?? ***shakin' my head***
Where's GRANDMA "THE GOV." NOW?? What?? NO "brilliant" remarks to reporters??
C'mon! Give us a "YOU BETCHA"! It's a boy!! **WINK*** Use that smarmy/snarky/sarcastic VOICE!! :>) :>)

So they really were going to make that child get married for her mother's political aspirations.
And they were all going to live in the White House.
Gawd, did this nation dodge a BULLET.
spirit_55z
Lawd, what a nightmare that would've been!
Still think there's a possibility those two will marry if SnoHo plans to run for POTUS in 2012. She still may pull out that shot gun and go aerial hunting on Levi. LOL!
I wonder if Levi's mom is being compensated well for keeping the lid on this sorted mess. Just wondering......

Nope, that's why she got busted manufacturing meth:
High-ranking officials with Barack Obama's transition team met for roughly two-and-a-half hours with a wide range of Jewish groups that encompassed nearly the entire ideological spectrum.
The meeting, which involved 29 organizations ranging from hawkish (Zionist Organization of America and, to a lesser extent, AIPAC) and conservative (the Orthodox Union) to Democratic (the National Jewish Democratic Council) and progressive (J Street, Peace Now), took place in the transition's Washington D.C. office on Thursday afternoon.
Reflecting the variety of viewpoints at the table, a host of foreign policy and domestic topics were raised for discussion. Disagreements between the groups were aired before the Obama officials, which included deputy chief of staff Jim Messina, public liaison Michael Strautmanis, Jewish outreach coordinator Dan Shapiro, and aides Tonya Robinson and Eric Lynn.
On several occasions, the Obama team was pressed to define the president-elect's position on a paramount issue to Jewish groups: U.S. policy towards Iran.
"They assured us, as the vice president-elect has said, that the Iran/nuclear issue is one of the things at the very top of the agenda," said an attendee. "They repeated the idea that we should be focusing on it diplomatically and not just militarily. Some of the more right-wing groups were saying that it can't be carrots and no sticks, that we are running out of time.... The Obama team said [in response] that preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons is an issue that the president-elect, as he's made clear during and after the election, considers a primary concern. It is not something that will fall off the radar."
The president-elect will hold his fifth press availability this week Friday to announce more administration picks.
He's expected to name Rep. LaHood as transportation secretary, Rep. Solis as labor secretary, and possibly others.
Presser starts at 2:15 pm ET.
[NOTE: It feels as IFFF Mr. President-Elect Obama has "WORKED" harder in these few days that SHRUB has worked in 8 years!! I'll bet he's **shakin' his head*** at the amount of work that PEO has done in such a SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME!! Annnnnd, sayin' WHEW!! :>) :>)]
Rep. Hilda L. Solis (D-Calif.) will take over the Labor Department in an imploding job market while Big Labor is licking its chops for payback in Washington.
So why is she giving up a potential leadership track in the House for one of the more daunting cabinet jobs?
Solis, the daughter of a Teamster and a leader in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, surprised even some of her colleagues with the move.
Solis didn’t say a word about the potential job offer in a recent conversation with California Rep. Lois Capps. “If she was being considered then, she’s good at holding it to herself,” Capps said.
Colleagues viewed Solis, a close ally to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), as a strong candidate for the party leadership one day. Just this month, her name floated as a potential successor to Rep. Xavier Becerra as vice chair of the Democratic Caucus before Becerra withdrew his name from consideration as U.S. trade representative.
But Solis’ strong ties to labor seem to be a factor in the choice, and she’s already winning praise from union chiefs. In this cabinet job, she’ll not only carry the expectations of Hispanic political leaders but will have to navigate between the heavy hand of labor unions and the well-funded business lobbyists on K Street.
AFL-CIO President John Sweeney was one of the first to laud her selection.

Newser) – Bristol Palin and babydaddy Levi Johnston will welcome a boy roughly any second now, spills Sarah Palin's dad in an interview with Grandparents.com, but "they don't have a name for it yet." Soon-to-be great-grandfather Chuck Heath said the guv will make a great grandmother. "I don't know about how much time she can spend, she's so busy. But she'll get her licks in," he said.
Even with the election behind them, things haven't slowed down for the Palin clan. Heath said his daughter's still in demand, with interview requests pouring in. "There are open invitations from several of them—even open invitations from O'Reilly and from Oprah," he said. Heath said he and wife Sally are focusing on supporting their daughter—and getting ready for their great-grandson, due Saturday. "I hope he's a normal, happy, healthy kid."
