Bill Richardson has a coveted post in Obama's Cabinet – coveted as compared to Labor, Education, Transportation and the VA. Each Cabinet position is important; I think what's upsetting you is the profile of these Agencies and their organizations.

I've worked at Labor and Transportation, and will probably be going to Commerce in the new year, depending on my interviews. These organizations do most of the grunt work of making the country move and flow as regards to employment and transportation. They don't get the most money in the Federal Budgets, and are always having to lobby Congress to keep the money they do get.

Commerce isn't one of those Agencies that has to do that. Richardson will be overseeing a budget and operations into the billions of dollars, and that is no mean feat. I do agree with you that he is waaay more qualified than Hillary Clinton, and if you've been reading this blog, I'm already on record predicting putting Hillary in the SoS slot will come back to bite Obama in the ass; who knows, if she screws up, Obama has two back ups in the form of Richardson and Susan Rice over at the UN.

The last Latino to get a Cabinet position of high profile was Alberto Gonzales, and we all know what he did with THAT.

I think in terms of experience, Richardson had her beat hands down: 14 years as a Congressman, Governor of New Mexico, U.S. Secretary of Energy, US ambassador to the UN, and nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times for his diplomatic missions.

Perhaps Richardson played his hand wrong. He endorsed Obama to get his foot in the door of the administration. Now instead of getting the position he coveted, he is relegated to Commerce, a consolation prize for which he wasn't even the first choice.
