Justices Mull Whether to Consider Obama Citizenship Case

Supreme Court justices are scheduled to hold a private conference today to consider high court petitions. One that is bringing loads of attention from the media is a case challenging President-elect Barack Obama's citizenship and eligibility for office.

Supporters of the petition are holding a vigil today while the justices make their decision, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The petition is a continuation of a New Jersey case filed by Leo Donofrio that originally sought to stay the election. The Tribune notes that there are many other efforts throughout the country trying to derail Obama's presidency on claims that he wasn't born in the United States or later renounced his citizenship.

Obama has maintained he was born in Hawaii and Hawaiian officials say his original birth certificate is locked in a vault.

Nice picture! I went to college (U Chicago) with the young lady sitting next to Michelle Obama. Degrees of separation are eerie. Michelle started working there when I was an undergrad and I have very nice memories of her and her efforts to really help build the univerisity's community service program.

Palin’s Stylists Took In Thousands More in Final Weeks

Gov. Sarah Palin’s traveling makeup artist was paid $68,400 for roughly two months of work, according to a new campaign finance report filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Ms. Palin’s makeup artist, Amy Strozzi — who was nominated for an Emmy award for her cosmetics work on the television show “So You Think You Can Dance?” — was paid $32,400 by Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign between Oct. 16 and Nov. 24, the period covered by the most recent reports filed with the commission.

This amount came on top of the $36,000 she had already been paid in previous reports, dating back to September.

In addition, Ms. Palin’s traveling hair stylist, Angela Lew, was paid a total of $42,225, with $23,400 coming during the period covered by the latest reports to the commission, which were due at midnight on Thursday.

Much attention has been paid to the $150,000 the Republican National Committee spent on outfitting Ms. Palin in September at high-end department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, as well as on makeup services.

Republican officials said this week that additional clothing charges would appear on the Republican National Committee’s campaign finance report totaling less than $30,000. But the committee’s report, which was due at midnight on Thursday, was not yet available as of late evening.

Barack Obama raised over $104 million from well over a million donors in the last weeks of the campaign, according to final campaign documents filed tonight with the FEC. The haul, which covers the period between October 16th and November 24th, included over 547,000 new donors who had not previously given to Obama.

National Mall will be open for Obama inauguration

In a change from tradition, the entire length of the National Mall will be open to the public during the upcoming presidential inauguration, President-elect Barack Obama's inaugural committee announced Thursday.

The committee has pledged to make Obama's inauguration "the most open and accessible in history," allowing those who can't get the 240,000 tickets to the swearing-in ceremony on the Capitol grounds to fill the mall.

In the past, parts of the mall have been closed off as a parade staging area. The National Park Service has said jumbo TV screens will line the mall to give overflow crowds a glimpse of Obama's swearing-in.

Park Service officials have said they're expecting at least 1 million people for the inaugural, and the city has put the number as high as 5 million.

Also Thursday, the Newseum announced plans to offer visitors a warm viewing spot at the only museum located directly on the Pennsylvania Avenue parade route.

"We know not everyone coming to town is going to get an invitation to a ball," said Newseum spokeswoman Susan Bennett. "We hope we can accommodate a lot of people."

Advance tickets ($20 for adults and $13 for youth) will be sold on the Newseum's Web site.

NBC is holding back from anointing David Gregory as the new host of "Meet the Press" because "they're furious about leaks" that tipped off the media, well-placed sources told Page Six. The infamous in-house squabbling over Tim Russert's replacement "is at a new peak" said one tipster, with some NBC suits and talent sore over the network's widely reported choice of Gregory - who had yet to be confirmed as of last night. An other source said the brass blame MSNBC host Chuck Todd for tipping off media blogs on Gregory's new gig - for which Todd was a top contender - and ruining the announcement that was planned to be made this Sunday by interim "Meet the Press" host Tom Brokaw.

Well, I still don't want Gregory in that position! No way!!!

Bill Gates Says He's Open to a Role Helping Obama Admin

Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who is in Washington this week to press his foundation's education and global health agenda, said he is keeping an open mind about taking a role aiding the incoming Obama administration.

Asked in an interview yesterday with The Washington Post whether he would consider serving in the new administration, Gates left the door open.

"Certainly my full-time job is being chairman of the foundation," Gates said. "If there was some committee or pretty focused task where I could contribute, I'd be glad to consider that, and I hope that the things we've learned about education -- including the mistakes we've made -- I hope we do get a strong dialogue and I'm very optimistic we'll have that with these people."

Kicking off that dialogue, Gates met with Vice President-elect Joe Biden at Obama's Washington transition headquarters yesterday afternoon. A transition official said Biden and Gates discussed "a wide range of issues, including global health and development, as well as the need to improve resources for secondary education, particularly for community colleges."

And Gates described to the incoming vice president the work of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is the world's largest charitable foundation, built with the personal fortunes of Gates and billionaire investor Warren Buffett, a long-time Obama supporter who also acts as an economic adviser to the president-elect.

Before meeting with Biden, Gates delivered a policy address at George Washington University yesterday in which he called on Obama to increase deficit spending to stimulate the economy and help the country's most vulnerable residents.

WASHINGTON — After pouring vast amounts of money into financial institutions of almost every type, and having little to show for it, the Bush administration and the Federal Reserve are suddenly taking a new look at ordinary homeowners.

Ben S. Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve, warned on Thursday that the soaring number of foreclosures threatened the economy. He then proposed some ideas — government-engineered loan modifications, and more taxpayer money to help people refinance — to keep people in their homes.

“The public policy case for reducing preventable foreclosures does not rely solely on the desire to help people who are in trouble,” Mr. Bernanke said. “More needs to be done.”
