Speaking of countdowns....I plan to be in DC for the festivities, even if I'm just at a club/bar watching the Inauguration on a big screen, however, does anyone know of any "low budget" events or FREE events that are taking place during Inauguration weekend. I mean big ups to my brothas and sistahs doing it big in the city that weekend, however, we are still in a recession! So, anyone with an inside on other parties/socials/netwoking events, let me know! My goal is to just be in the presence of those who are trying to support and celebrate this historic occassio without being broke! Holla!

The face of Cleopatra: Scientists recreate the first true image of the legendary beauty
So much for Liz Taylor, although we all know Cleopatra was not white. If only I can find that teacher that gave me a "D" for the report I gave saying Cleopatra was at least part black.
Talis James Colberg was appointed by newly-elected governor Sarah Palin as the seventeenth attorney general of Alaska on December 13, 2006. As Palin said about her appointment of Colberg, “Adding [him] to my team continues to demonstrate my commitment to fill the top posts of my administration with the best in the state.” “He will bring a fresh perspective on all issues as legal advisor to the governor and other state officers. Colberg has a profound respect for the Constitution of the State of Alaska and its strict interpretation. He is an inherent believer in trust and transparency.”
[Soooo, here's the "SnoHo" CONNECTION! I would suggest that some MORE ROOM BE MADE IN THAT "POD" for HER!!]
Colberg, age 50, is a life-long Alaskan. He received his high school degree from Palmer High School in 1976. He graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1979 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Oriental History. In 1983 Colberg received his JD degree from Pepperdine University School of Law. He was admitted to the Alaska Bar in 1984. He finished his Ph.D. in Northern Political History & Culture at the University of Alaska Northern Studies program in 2008. [1]
Here’s a rumor that actually had me almost spitting my coffee this morning. We say that all the time, but really. Almost spit my coffee.
Now, this is only rumor at this point, but according to the Alaska Ear, guess who Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s roommate was at Pepperdine Law School?
I’ll tell you, because you’ll never guess.
Put down your coffee.
Sit.
None other than infamous Alaska Attorney General Talis Colberg, the one who told Alaska State employees they could ignore legislative subpoenas. The one who in part inspired the largest political rally in Alaska’s history, asking for his removal.
Rod Blagojevich and Talis Colberg. Roommates.
Pepperdine must be so proud.
So….was their room shaped like a pod?
Just askin’.
Now, I'm going back to wiki to see IFFF this was mentioned -OR- "scrubbed!" :>) :>)
President-elect Barack Obama will kick off his inaugural celebration the old-fashioned way—he’ll travel with his family by train from Philadelphia and scoop up Vice President-elect Joe Biden in Wilmington, Del., along the way. He'll also make a stop in Baltimore.
Baltimore and Philadelphia were chosen because of their pivotal roles in American history and the old-style travel will also allow more people to participate in the celebration. Expect thousands to line the railways with cameras and banners.
The inaugural committee is working to strike a balance that notes the historical import of the moment but also acknowledges the mood of the country. The first and second families will volunteer the day before the swearing in and inaugural events are being planned across the country, according to inaugural aides, in an effort to make the celebration inclusive. And for the first time, the entire length of the National Mall will be open to accommodate the record crowds. Jumbo video screens will be set up for viewing the ceremony.
“We want to find ways to connect people to each other in as many ways as we can and our goal is to try to make people in this country to be involved in some way,” said Linda Douglass, spokeswoman for the inaugural committee.
Echoing Obama’s nominating speech, the theme of the celebration, expected to draw as many as 4 million people, is “Renewing America’s Promise.” About 240,000 tickets will be given out, with a select few (30,000) getting seats on the terrace below the podium. Invitations have gone out to the Tuskegee Airman among others for those prime seats.
While it’s anybody’s guess what Michelle Obama plans to wear, Obama has already picked out his tuxedo for the many inaugural balls that are planned for the evening. Hollywood stars are dropping big money for tickets—Halle Berry, Samuel Jackson, and Sharon Stone have already given $50,000 for ball tickets and several other perks. The events are likely to be the most star-studded celebration the nation’s capital has seen in many years. Oprah Winfrey, who dubbed Obama “the one” in the early primary days, will film her show from the Opera House at the Kennedy Center.
On Sunday, Jan. 18, a welcoming event is planned for the public. On Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 19, the Obamas and Bidens will perform community service. The President-elect and Vice President-elect and their families will participate in the traditional inaugural ceremonies and events on Jan. 20 on the West Front of the United States Capitol. A prayer service is scheduled for Jan. 21.
Mr. President-Elect Obama! Always finding ways to CONNECT WITH THE PEOPLE! :>) :>)

Filling up the Cabinet: President-elect Barack Obama on Tuesday will announce Chicago schools superintendent Arne Duncan as his choice for education secretary, a transition source said. Later this week, Obama will announce Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar for interior secretary, a senior Democratic official said. - Sent from Carol E. Lee’s BlackBerry
I've returned (from the Electoral College ceremony at the State House). I dressed. I took a ton of pictures.
And I wept.
The president of the electoral college in Maine is a Black woman. Jill Duson, the first Black mayor of the largest city in the whitest state in the union. She evoked Barbara Jordan in her closing remarks and I lost it.
Jill was also a delegate to Denver.
Three generations of Talbots were there. From a local paper just after the election:
Talbot, a Portland native, served as the first black man in the Maine Legislature and has written extensively on racial history. Among his works is a textbook he co-edited titled "Maine's Visible Black History."
Obama's accomplishment felt like an accomplishment for America, Talbot said.
"Your heart does cry," he said."You felt it in your heart, your soul and your mind."
Talbot hopes to attend Obama's inauguration in January, though he knows it may be a struggle getting into what may become the biggest inauguration in U.S. history.
"One of my daughters is working on it," he said.
His daughter, Rachel Talbot Ross, leads the Portland chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a role Talbot himself once filled.
Rachel was also a delegate to Denver.
I'll write a full blog post with photos when I get a chance.

That's wonderful, Craig. Would love to read more and see the pictures.
New camera. I have to figure out the technical stuff.

News Of The Wierd: PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Police say a Port St. Lucie man was arrested for throwing a sandwich at his girlfriend, the second food attack that sent a man to jail in about a month. According to a police report released Monday, 20-year-old Matthew Rubin threw the sandwich at his girlfriend's face during an argument. Rubin then hit the top of her head with his first before taking off. Rubin admitted to throwing the food but not hitting her. He was arrested Friday and faces a battery charge. Last month, another man was arrested on a battery charge for hitting his girlfriend with a sandwich, knocking her glasses off and nearly causing a traffic crash. Police reports did not what type of sandwich was used in either attack.

OH NO THEY DIDNT
AHHHHHHH HELL..........why Chris Matthews just pointed out this one demographic that President-elect Obama has not reached into for any appointments.....(geez louise).....
SOUTHERNERS..........and he said it over and over and over.
TruthSeeker
Chris is a shit-disturber.
JJai
it's been on Politico for like a week.
spirit_55z
say that again.
rikyrah
you know what I'm going to say....
FUCK the South. (outside of FL, NC, VA)
Justice58
What Rikyrah said!
spirit_55z
And Tweety Bird too. FUCK Him.
Town
Southerners (with the exception of VA, NC and FL) didn't vote for Obama, Southerners shouldn't expect to be in Obama's cabinet, either.
Monica
What about the Black hamlets: the Mississippi Delta, Atlanta and the surrounding areas, Memphis and the Black Belt.
Town
When Chris Matthews and these other dashboard bobbleheads mean "Southerners" they aren't talking about black Southerners, they mean WHITE Southerners.
Southern = White. Period.
White Southerners did not support Obama, being the only region in the country who went overboard for Unstable / Unable, so white southerners should not expect to be rewarded with Cabinet positions.
spirit_55z
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!! dashboard bobbleheads!! This is so true.
Monica
So if you are a black person born in the South, you aren't a Southern?
When did they have a meeting to make that rule?
I was born and raised in AL and although I haven't live there for 20 years, I'm a still a SOUTHERNER.
Town
Nope. You're just black.
Miranda
Me too! but guess what!! you're not a woman either! I found out from this election that all I am is BLACK. I'm not a woman, southerner, Generation Xer, professional, college educated, urban or Presbyterian.....I am BLACK...that's it! that's my whole political demographic...JUST BLACK. That's why they would holler about how women voted for Hillary and just ignored black women..we weren't women...we're just black! How did young people vote? When they say "young"..that means white adults between the ages of 18-24......not Black. There were many ways pollsters broke down demographics...but we didnt get that, we just BLACK.
Town
Exactly. We're just black. When these talking heads get up on TV and say "Southern VA is the REAL VA because the people in Northern VA are just flowing from DC," they aren't talking about all the black people living in Southern VA. They're talking about the good ol' boys and gals who like NASCAR and hunting and fishing (as if black folks don't like NASCAR, hunting or fishing). NoVa= DC = black folks = not really Virginian/Southern.
When George Allen gets up in front of all these white people way out in SW VA and say "Macaca needs to be welcomed to the REAL Virginia," he's not talking about the Latinos and Asians in the north, or the black people all around. He's talking about white people in the sticks who love flying their Confederate flags, and talking about their great great granddaddy who fought in the Civil War.
When Palin traveled around the South, and told those white people foaming at the mouth THEY were the TRUE Americans, and THEY were the ones with true morals and values, unlike those people from the cities, she was making a point: (white) People from small town America = good & have morals and are the true Americans, (blacks/latinos/librul whites) People from cities are BAD.
When Chris Matthews gets up and cries that Obama is not putting Southerners in his cabinet, he's not talking about some black guy from Atlanta, he's not talking about some black lady from Memphis, he's talking about Joe Gun-Rack.
Well F*CK Joe Gun-Rack. Joe Gun-Rack didn't support Obama so Joe Gun-Rack shouldn't expect to get Obama's goodies. Since Fake America voted for Obama, Fake Americans should get the appointments. I didn't see Chris Matthews or anyone else wringing their hands over why big city blacks or latinos or Northeast Liberals weren't getting appointments in Bush's cabinet.
spirit_55z
TOWN, YOU JUST LAY THAT MEDAL TO THE PEDAL AND KEEP ON DRIVING IT HOME!!!!!
OMG...when you looked at the map, that section of Mississippi was damn near navy blue.
JJai
thanks, y'all (Miranda and Craig Hickman) yeah I am from the South)
maybe, I should have just stayed home. F**k, a mandate.
Monica
I'm from AL and that blue strip across the state is the Black Belt (home of the Civil Rights Movement, you know, Montgomery Bus Boycott, Selma, Lowndes County Freedom Organization). Those majority black counties went to Obama.
JJai
No, F**k rationality. I think we should stereotype people based upon where they live. Because stereotypes are hot!
Why should he put any Saltines in his Cabinet <<<eyebrows raised>>>.
They didn't vote for his ass, so none of them should be in the Cabinet. I would say he doesn't reward treachery, but I'm still gagging over Hillary and Gates being in his Administration. With the exception of Florida and North Carolina, Obama didn't carry any of the Southern states, so the Saltines get left out.
spirit_55z
ROTFLMAO!!!! "Why should he put any Saltines in his Cabinet" Heeheee!
I have visions of sadines dancing in my head.
Miranda
I think I had my arms folded the entire time I was watching....my eyes rolled so far back I went blind for couple of seconds.
Justice58
ROTLFMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Miranda, you need to quit!
isonprize
I know folks are thinking, as some did in the primary, that P-E Obama isn't being hard enough, hasn't come out strong enough, etc. etc.
But I think, and I do hope that I am right, that in his quiet, strong way, P-E Obama really likes it when folks underestimate him. Cheney and Co. seem to think that P-E Obama is a punk. I think he, while no saint and certainly far from perfect, is going to do his damndest to actually govern the United States of America. I really don't think he give a flying fig what the media or anybody else says about him. He's about the work and gittin' her done!
Cheney is pretty much calling him out here -- daring him to run into some booby trap or the other that he and his undercover boys have set. I might be way off the mark, but I just have the sneaking suspicion that P-E Obama is some kind of ninja warrior who is 5-6 steps ahead of all of 'em.
Send me the tin-foil hat if you want to, but I'm going with my gut...
spirit_55z
isonprize, sure you right. Going with your gut isgoing with God.
Monica
Is it hypocritical to call out the Southern senators who blocked the bailout extension for Detroit's automakers when you drive a foreign car?
No, because Shelby, McConnell and Lindsay Graham are all (R-Toyota/Thugs).
Miranda
Their rationale will be that the foreign car was made in Alabama (Mercedes) or South Carolina (BMW) or Tennessee (Lexus)....but you probably call them out for the obscene tax breaks those companies got and how much the state gave up in order to get those plants, something that GM and Ford are surely not afforded....those senators would have NO answer for that one.
isonprize
Not at all. I ain't ever mad at working class folks who make that paper, as long as they work for it.I do, however, think American car companies and designers got lazy along time ago. And even though I work my tail off on a daily basis making WAY less than the average auto worker, I also know that if it weren't for unions, I could easily have a 50-60 hour a week gig.
What I'm mad at with the "Southern Senators" is how hypocritical THEY are!!!
During campaign season, they want to wave the American flag and claim that only REAL Americans would vote for them. But then they want to throw the AMERICAN union workers, (with a significant number who are people of color...) not only under the bus, but also in the river and drag 'em thru to mud.
In an interview with Rush Limbaugh (via Politico), Vice President Dick Cheney predicted that the next president will appreciate the way he and George Bush expanded executive power.
"Once they get here and they're faced with the same problems we deal with every day, then they will appreciate some of the things we've put in place," Cheney said.
"We did not exceed our constitutional authority, as some have suggested," Cheney added. "The President believes, I believe very deeply, in a strong executive, and I think that's essential in this day and age. And I think the Obama administration is not likely to cede that authority back to the Congress. I think they'll find that given a challenge they face, they'll need all the authority they can muster."
Cheney went on to express doubt that President Obama would, as he has promised, close Guantanamo Bay.
"Guantanamo has been very, very valuable. And I think they'll discover that trying to close it is a very hard proposition," he said. "They're unlawful combatants. And you if you're not going to have a place to locate them like Guantanamo, then you either have to bring them here to the continental United States and I don't know any member of Congress who's volunteering to have al Qaeda terrorists deposited in his district."
Cheney also expressed grave concerns about the automobile industry.
"We're on the downside of a recession that may be the worst since World War II," he said. "And if the automobile industry goes belly up now, there's a deep concern that that would be a major shock to the system."
Why does Cheney keep crawling out of that bunker of his to make lame ass comments like this?
He should worry that Obama may turn him and Bush over to the Hague where they get tried as being War Criminals.
Justice58
That's what I'm talking about!
Kat
Well, looking at the way that Biden is already dialing down the powers of the VP, I don't think they do "appreciate" it.
GreenLadyHere
Kat: GOOD POINT!! :>) :>)
Shrub/Cheney "made up the VP duties as they went along!!" That's what "the SnoHo" thought that she would have the ability ta do IFFF she got into office!
Can you imagine the distortion of the intent of the Constitution that has occurred as a result of the "Shrub/Cheney MASSACRE!"
