Obama pays last respects to Grandmother "Toot" Posted by Ross Colvin
HONOLULU - The hectic pace of the election campaign kept him from attending her funeral.
But President-elect Barack Obama on Tuesday finally paid his last respects to the woman he called the “rock” of his family, the grandmother who help raise him in Hawaii, before scattering her ashes from the shoreline.
"Schean, a boilermaker at the TVA plant, was in bed when he "heard a loud clap like thunder," she said. Pieces of the ceiling began falling, wood was popping, glass breaking and furniture falling. And then the house started to move."
That's scary as hell.

Wow...water main in Bethesda and now this....
water, water every where...and if you are where it is cold..there is snow everywhere
I thought that all the ladies wanted a Pajamma Gram for Christmas...according to MSNBC.
Don't you all want a keepsake organza hatbox, lavender-scented sachet, Do-Not-Disturb sign and a personalized gift card?
Do the sistahs really want this for Christmas?
whiterosebuddy
ME too!!
Where can we order it.
You know what else would be a cool look?
Wearing a hot red or sizzling white blouse with the tie and some nice leggins with a great pair of red shoes...
carolinagirl
Uh.. LOL. I cannot get with that look. It sounds like you go around dressing like a Christmas elf. ;-) Red shirt, red leggings, and red shoes??? Maybe I just can't see the outfit by the way you're describing it.
whiterosebuddy
Well, I actually would prefer the white blouse but you know some of us like to be more 'visually exciting' than others. The leggins would be black, so the red would be more of an accent...White shirt, black leggins, red shoes and the tie. That would pop....very festive
I understand..I am not an adept descriptor of apparel.
Besides, don't you know I just have a hot pair of red shoes I wanna wear? Just trying to think of a way to wear it with that tie or sweater. lol
I must say, I wasn't expecting that... but yes, we all do it.

It pains me to agree with Pat Buchanan about the Auto Industry...but, he's right.

Why the Auto Bailout's a Dead End Washington Dispatch: Detroit's primary moneymaking vehicle has been selling credit, not cars. The Big Three may have finally run out of road. http://www.motherjones.com/washington_dispatch/...

Yes, on that issue, he is dead on. but then Bucahanan has always been a protectionist. And for that matter, so am I.
I do not get how we do not protect our own industries and thus the middle class and American worker. I do not get how folks want a job, work for the auto industry and then think they can buy a toyota, mitshubishi, kia, or honda...and still have their jobs.
I do not get where the disonnnect is there.
But then I was raised in Detroit, and I beleive in the unions and I know how the UAW is responsible for American workers having health care benefits, pension plans and dental plans along with an American standard of living wage
isonprize
Ummm, I'll tell you where the disconnection is....
My family bought American cars all thru my 'growin' up' (who could forget that green Chevy Caprice Classic, the workin' man's Cadillac?...) But by the time I went to buy my first car, all I heard about was the good mileage and low maintenance of Japanese and German cars.
Having driven hand-me-down hoopties for more than a few years, the LAST thing I wanted was a car that would put me down. So off to the VW dealer I went. First a Rabbit, then a Jetta until they got cheesy with a less than 5 mile-an-hour bumper. It's been Toyotas ever since.
My 'experiment' is with my neighbor who bought her Ford the same year I bought my Toyota. Two years in, I was taking her to work or picking her up because the car was in the shop. Not a scientific sample I know, but still...
I believe in Unions too. I know my history, but I will not buy a car that doesn't do what it's supposed to do on a consistent basis.
Anyone (particulary a kid) who has spent a cold night in a Pontiac that brokedown on the interstate in the back woods of Georgia surely understands.
There's a reason that you see Toyotas built in the late 80s still roamin the streets.
I'm not hating on Detroit and I pray our brethren are not left "stranded" like I was that night, but I have more important things to worry about than me personally buying American and being stranded in the middle of nowhere.
If you want to buy American, more power to you!
whiterosebuddy
When you buy from non-American mfgrs the end result is not stranded in the middle of nowhere...the end result is unemployed, and homeless Americans who wish they were only stranded.
Like it or not, we live in a global economy where we must compete. We must ask ourselves, "What is our comparative advantage?" Then we must be willing to exploit that advantage.
Detroit lost the advantage a long time ago. To recapture that advantage, they will have to create a product that people can trust. Being unemployed and homeless are now the real, actual byproduct of the US Auto Industry's lack of innovation.
if someone leaves you in the middle of the road year-after-year and you keep coming back to them, then that says more about "you" than them.
How many more second chances? How many more bailouts will the industry need? If GMAC Financial is being converted to a holding bank, then why not convert GE Capital to a holding bank? Why not convert Home Depot's Credit Card division to a holding bank?
This is a slippery slope.
whiterosebuddy
As long as they are writing the paychecks, they can have as long as they desire. Doesn't do the American worker any good to have a global edge and they are unemployed, and can't even purchase a car, let alone food.
Merry Christmas WEBB!!

The problem is the company and its bottom line. They built cars that you would replace in four years. They didn't have a hundred year plan but next quarters profits. Unfortunately, the powers actually drove their own companies to the ground. Meanwhile exporting jobs and smashing the idea of American Built along the way.
When I bought my car, I knew I didn't know enough about cars to be fixing them all the time. I bought the car that had its shop just down the street so if it was in the shop, I wouldn't be stranded.
Additionally, most of the parts to put together cars were made overseas, shipped to the U.S. and assembled here.
We need to bring those jobs back and have those cars constructed well.
Cars lasted a long time once. It's entirely okay to do it again, especially since we now have global warming. The Europeans have been doing that for years, long after the hard years of reconstruction after WW II.
whiterosebuddy
No, that is OK that you wanted a car you believed was reliable. Yet, my thoughts are how does that connect to jobs. If you went so far as to purchase a non USA mfgr car...did you give any thought to what would happen when sales decreased for USA auto mfgrs. Did you go a step further and say, hmmmm how will I pay for this reliable foreign car if my employer goes out of business.
That is what I mean when I say where is the disconnect. Great you want what you consider to be a better quality or more reliable vehicle but what good is that quality and reliability when you no longer have a job? Or you can only find jobs for minimum wage like Walmart, or there is no health insurance and you have to work forced overtime. Cause the good jobs are gone cause American consumers buy their products from overseas and now their jobs are outsourced....that is the disconnect I mean.
If you lose your earnings do you think you will be able to feed and shelter yourself with that reliable vehicle.
Don't get me wrong. I understand what you are saying in terms of the value you were seeking as a consumer.
What I don't understand and where I see the disconnect is in consumers not understanding there is no value when you have no job.
It is as if they went out and purchased Henredon & RocheBois furniture and let the roof on their home deterioate to the point of it having holes and all the wet elements came into their home, destroying everything as it ate at the foundation and the house caved in.
And that is how the American consumer has bitten off their nose to spite their face.
soulsistah02
I see your point. We want these industries to remain in America and employ Americans, yet we want to keep purchasing products that are made in China, Taiwan or Indonesia because it will cost less than a similar product made in the USA.
But I guess my question is this: at what point in history did American made products become synonymous with inferiority? I think that's where the issue lies.
Town
There aren't any truly "American" or "foreign" cars anymore. Toyotas, Hondas and Nissans are made in America, employing Americans while Fords are using foreign car parts.
whiterosebuddy
While yes the American worker is employed by foreign owned mfgrs theose employers do not provide an American living wage or benefits like the American mfgrs have.
The only reason those workers even make a competitive wage is because of the UAW but those same workers do not have pensions or healtcare plans provided by those foreign auto makers. I believe there should be a significant fee on each of those autos so that all workers can have competitive compensation. Instead, we are looking at losing the largest mfgr in the nation. Which will make America far less competitve globally if we ever had to mfgr war machinery. Which goes to national security.
I realize this is somewhat of a tangent as my true point is that Americans need to take care of home first. We need to demand and create a structure to build reliable autos, if need be. Those same cars are selling like hotcakes in China & Japan but just not here at home....
We have some tough times ahead, that are going to require tough choices. I would just like Americans to think America first. and what is best for the American worker which drives our middle class and makes America the great country that we are. You can be born into nothing and climb into the middle class in one generation or leapfrog to the very tippy top of the capitalist mountain as an American. We do not need to lose that by forgetting to buy American first.
I've never driven anything except a Ford and never had any trouble with them at all.
Until this year.
Ford didn't have a 5-door in its new offerings, so I bit the dust and leased a Toyota. Hopefully in two years, Ford will create a car I want to buy and I'll be back in the saddle.
He was on Hardball today, defending the American Auto Industry. Can't seem to find the video. Barnacle is substituting. Pat was debating some female twit who was uttering nonsense. What made it funny to me was that Barnacle was getting sick of her too. He couldn't even contain that he thought the woman was a nitwit.
There are lots of religions that are affirming. There are many Christian ministries that do as well. There's gonna be a lot of people in for a big shock when they learn they were following dogma and not a personal spiritual relationship and had no moral compass.

BREAKING NEWS OBAMA INVOLVED WITH PAY TO PLAY IN HAWAII
HONOLULU, HI (AP) President-elect Barack Obama is being investigated in a "pay to play" scheme involving journalists, AP has learned.
After a round of golf on a lavish, exclusive golf course situated just miles from his secluded, expansive $9 million dollar estate, the president-elect allegedly tried to bribe the journalists covering his vacation with a round of beer.
Sources say that nobody wanted to take Obama up on his offer, fearing they may be the next ones caught up in a "pay to play" scheme.
"I have never in my life been bribed by an elected office with anything," says Podunka Tribune reporter Glen Savage. "It makes me wonder if Obama is trying to get favorable press coverage by bribing reporters."
Other reporters say that they take their coverage seriously and would never jeopardize their coverage by accepting bribes or hanging out with elected officials.
Sally Bradlee, a blogger from Right Writers, a conservative blog, says the allegations of Obama's attempted bribery are troubling.
"The news that Barack Obama would try to bribe journalists to give him favorable coverage just leads me to ask how much was he paying off journalists during the primaries and general election? We need to get to the bottom of this," she said.
When asked about reporters attending backyard barbeques and parties thrown by Sen. John S. McCain (R-Ariz), she said it was different.
"McCain was just trying to develop relationships with the media," she said. "What Obama did was outright bribery and cannot be condoned."
Neither President-elect Barack Obama nor his staff had any comment for this story.

Just sent Mary Mitchell of the Chicago Sun Times an email asking if she's going to issue a retraction or apology for slamming Obama in print and on National TV for twhat now turns out be the FALSE report that Obama did not have Jessie Jackson, Jr. on his list of Senate candidates. I asked her, "for someone who persistently lectures Black folks on our consciousness, where the hell is yours?!" Unnamed white folks told someone white at her paper that Obama didn't want Jessie Jr. considered, and she automatically believed it. She could have easily called Roland Martin who would have set her straight. She could have called any number of Black folks for accurate information, but she like far TOO MANY Black folks these days couldn't wait to jump in the bucket to pull PEO down. What is astounding, disturbing and down right heart breaking is that many are the same Black folks who never had the nerve to stand up to Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton said jump and they replied "how high?", but now they are jumping at the chance of tearing Obama down.
Sepia
Preach it!
I was listening to Warren Ballentine the other day, and he had a message to black folks who were complaining about PEO not having enough blacks in his cabinet: What are YOU doing in your community? Why aren't you holding your local black politians' feet to the fire like you're doing PEO?

OH, and please get on her for those stupid remarks about Rev Lowery being the last one on the program, as a civil rights icon, she claimed that was insulting.

Anyone watching NBC Nightly News, where Chuck Todd is pretty much saying that Obama was lying about his level of involvement in the BlahBlah situation and still needs to answer questions about it.
This was preceded by a voiceover intoning that Obama was keeping a low profile in Hawaii while leaving Joe Biden to answer the questions.
Now they are going after Richardson, saying he's involved with Pay to Play in NM.
Rethug Water Carrier got rewarded with a show so he can bloviate about nothing in particular. These networks ain't slick. They're trying to set up a media assault on the Obama administration. Let the Fairness Doctrine get reinstated soon!!
Chuck Todd should stick to election returns. That's the only thing he can do with any credibility.
lamh31
Ya know what, Chuck Todd is just trying to get some cred as a "tough questioner" of the Obama white house at NBC new White House reporter. That's Gregory's old job, and from what I hear, Gregory had a rep for being a tough questioner of the Bush Admin, when he wasn't rapping with MC Karl Rove that is.
The problem for the MSM is that they went overboard with this story, and instead of doing some real reporting and investigation they just went with whatever gossip sprung up over the internet and the gossip columnists.
If I remember correctly, I remember responding to someone about that dumb ass "Rahm had 21 conservations with Blago" gossip report that MSNBC was treating as legitimate. Now the press has egg on their faces, and they need to justify their reckless reporting anyway they can.
Idiots! Maybe in the future they'll do a little "investigative reporting" before accusing people or staking out their homes or trying to force them to answer questions that the prosecutor told them not to answer.
