Oldest man in the US dies in Sacramento at 112 By JASON DEAREN, Associated Press Writer – Sun Dec 28, 11:48 pm ET
SAN FRANCISCO – George Francis, the nation's oldest man, who lived through both world wars, man's first walk on the moon and the election of the first black president, has died. He was 112.
Francis died Saturday of congestive heart failure at a nursing home in Sacramento, his son, Anthony Francis, said Sunday.
"He lived four years in the 19th century, 100 years in the 20th century, and 8 years in the 21st century. We call him the man of three centuries," said the younger Francis, 81. UCLA gerontologist Dr. Stephen Coles, who maintains a list of the world's oldest people, said Francis lived 112 years and 204 days

Wanted to bring attention to the documentary "Beyond Our Differences" which examines the common threads that unify the world's religious traditions. Bill Moyers Journal highlighted the documentary which was shown on PBS a few days ago.
From the "Beyond our Differences" website:
With all of the problems facing the world today -- war, poverty, weapons, environmental degradation, starvation, overpopulation and severe desperation among millions -- people are longing for meaning. Many find answers in religion or spirituality, but as a result faith and religion are often hijacked by those seeking to enhance their own power at the expense of others, often all in the name of God.
Thanks for the recommendation. May I also recommend Jimmy Carter - Man from Plains? It's available on DVD and currently showing on Showtime.
This documentary follows Carter on a book tour with flashbacks to his years as President and his role in the Middle East "Peace Process."
At first, I thought it was going to be boring, but I was pleasantly surprised. The film has proven to be very, very prescient in light of the events in Gaza/Palestine/Israel.
And of course, I enjoy watching all things "presidential," so that I can imagine what it's going to be like for Barack.

C-SPAN WHITE HOUSE WEEK- DECEMBR 8-JANUARY 3, 2009
The GOP lady could have scored major points smartly (and simply) denouncing the parody outright. But no, she pathetically tried to convince both the African-American anchor/host and her African-American DNC counterpart that a piece titled "Barack the Magic Negro" was technically a gotcha piece against Al Sharpton.
If something is crap, and you know its crap, its usually best to treat it as crap instead of speculating that it just might be a new form of chocolate.

Here is yet another article about U.S. prisons....and how one U.S. Senator ( Senator Webb from my home state, Virginia) wants to reform the prison system.
Washington Post article:
Webb Sets His Sights On Prison Reform Senator Proposes National Panel
By Sandhya Somashekhar Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, December 29, 2008; B01
This spring, Webb (D-Va.) plans to introduce legislation on a long-standing passion of his: reforming the U.S. prison system. Jails teem with young black men who later struggle to rejoin society, he says. Drug addicts and the mentally ill take up cells that would be better used for violent criminals. And politicians have failed to address this costly problem for fear of being labeled "soft on crime."......
In speeches and in a book that devotes a chapter to prison issues, Webb describes a U.S. prison system that is deeply flawed in how it targets, punishes and releases those identified as criminals.
With 2.3 million people behind bars, the United States has imprisoned a higher percentage of its population than any other nation, according to the Pew Center on the States and other groups. Although the United States has only 5 percent of the world's population, it has 25 percent of its prison population, Webb says.
A disproportionate number of those who are incarcerated are black, Webb notes. African Americans make up 13 percent of the population, but they comprise more than half of all prison inmates, compared with one-third two decades ago. Today, Webb says, a black man without a high school diploma has a 60 percent chance of going to prison.
Webb aims much of his criticism at enforcement efforts that he says too often target low-level drug offenders and parole violators, rather than those who perpetrate violence, such as gang members. He also blames policies that strip felons of citizenship rights and can hinder their chances of finding a job after release. He says he believes society can be made safer while making the system more humane and cost-effective...

What Do Prisoners Make for Victoria's Secret? NEWS: From Starbucks to Microsoft: a sampling of what US inmates make, and for whom
By Caroline Winter July/August 2008 Issue
Tens of thousands of US inmates are paid from pennies to minimum wage—minus fines and victim compensation—for everything from grunt work to firefighting to specialized labor. Here's a sampling of what they make, and for whom. Eating in: Each month, California inmates process more than 680,000 pounds of beef, 400,000 pounds of chicken products, 450,000 gallons of milk, 280,000 loaves of bread, and 2.9 million eggs (from 160,000 inmate-raised hens). Starbucks subcontractor Signature Packaging Solutions has hired Washington prisoners to package holiday coffees (as well as Nintendo Game Boys). Confronted by a reporter in 2001, a Starbucks rep called the setup "entirely consistent with our mission statement."
Around the Big House: Texas inmates produce brooms and brushes, bedding and mattresses, toilets, sinks, showers, and bullwhips. Bullwhips? Windows dressing: In the mid-1990s, Washington prisoners shrink-wrapped software and up to 20,000 Microsoft mouses for subcontractor Exmark (other reported clients: Costco and JanSport). "We don't see this as a negative," a Microsoft spokesman said at the time. Dell used federal prisoners for PC recycling in 2003, but stopped after a watchdog group warned that it might expose inmates to toxins.
Back to school: Texas and California inmates make dorm furniture and lockers, diploma covers, binders, logbooks, library book carts, locker room benches, and juice boxes. Patriotic duties: Federal Prison Industries, a.k.a. Unicor, says that in addition to soldiers' uniforms, bedding, shoes, helmets, and flak vests, inmates have "produced missile cables (including those used on the Patriot missiles during the Gulf War)" and "wiring harnesses for jets and tanks." In 1997, according to Prison Legal News, Boeing subcontractor MicroJet had prisoners cutting airplane components, paying $7 an hour for work that paid union wages of $30 on the outside.
The law won: In Texas, prisoners make officers' duty belts, handcuff cases, and prison-cell accessories. California convicts make gun containers, creepers (to peek under vehicles), and human-silhouette targets. A stitch in time: California inmates sew their own garb. In the 1990s, subcontractor Third Generation hired 35 female South Carolina inmates to sew lingerie and leisure wear for Victoria's Secret and JCPenney. In 1997, a California prison put two men in solitary for telling journalists they were ordered to replace "Made in Honduras" labels on garments with "Made in the usa." Open wide: At California's prison dental laboratory, inmates produce a complete prosthesis selection, including custom trays, try-ins, bite blocks, and dentures.
Constructive criticism: Prisoners in for burglary, battery, drug and gun charges, and escape helped build a Wal-Mart distribution center in Wisconsin in 2005, until community uproar halted the program. (Company policy says, "Forced or prison labor will not be tolerated by Wal-Mart.") On call: Its inmate call centers are the "best kept secret in outsourcing," Unicor boasts. In 1994, a contractor for gop congressional hopeful Jack Metcalf hired Washington state prisoners to call and remind voters he was pro-death penalty. Metcalf, who prevailed, said he never knew.

These are all ways money has been made by the labor of others. It is slavery by any name: share cropping chain gang/forced labor less than minimum wage red lining sub-prime lending jail for possession of this but not that
msmartin
Nothing but slavery. Working for the states (highways, trash pickup etc.) that they offended even if that included working to grow their own food and keep is one thing, but working to help corporations profit, nothing but slavery. Plain and simple slavery.

Thanks, Miranda. I posted on the Monday Thread, but I'll repeat it here.
Cheap labor and slavery!!!!!
Califronia and Texas are prominent throughout this article. What are the Senators from these states doing to reform the prison systems?
This means ya'll: Diane Fienstein, Barbara Boxer, John Cornyn, Kat Bailey Hutchinson
I was thinking about all this and the story I read this weekend about child slaves imported into the U.S.
This is what comes of nearly 30 years of Republican economic policy (even being wielded by Clinton.
One Southern politician recently said that if one gets a hungry man, he'll work for nearly nothing. This guy was all for pushing the wages of people who make cars down, down and down. Of course, none of the people who work in his state for foreign carmakers are making the sums the union workers in Detroit are.
Going down, down, down. The middle class going down, becoming the new poor.
Slave labor in China and parts East. Maquiladoras. Undocumented workers used like slaves in New Orleans. Sweatshops where illegals bead gowns and dresses for American designers.
Teenagers who pledge to remain virgins until marriage are just as likely to have premarital sex as those who do not promise abstinence and are significantly less likely to use condoms and other forms of birth control when they do, according to a study released today.
The new analysis of data from a large federal survey found that more than half of youths became sexually active before marriage regardless of whether they had taken a "virginity pledge," but that the percentage who took precautions against pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases was 10 points lower for pledgers than for non-pledgers.
"Taking a pledge doesn't seem to make any difference at all in any sexual behavior," said Janet E. Rosenbaum of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, whose report appears in the January issue of the journal Pediatrics. "But it does seem to make a difference in condom use and other forms of birth control that is quite striking." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/12/29/study-...

I have a friend who is the child of missionaries. I also went to a college that had a high percentage of missionary families. What she explained to me is that dating couples don't practice birth control because that would mean that they are planning to have sex outside of marriage, which is a sin. So they have sex, and can repent (or whatever they do) and be forgiven (or whatever) and if they get caught, they get married. Like her sister.
When kids are not taught the value of their bodies and why they might want to wait to have sex (be it for religious or other reasons) of course not. That's the problem with teaching abstinence for the sake of conservatives and the discomfort of parents. Fostering self-esteem and having a focus are so important!

In an effort to "prevent Palestinians from attacking towns in southern Israel with missiles," Israel today undertook its third day of offensive military airstrikes in the Palestinian territory of Gaza, raising the death toll to more than 300. The Palestinian casualty numbers have been described as the highest over such a brief period since the 1967 Six-Day war. Scores of Israelis have been wounded -- and at least one killed -- by rocket attacks fired by Palestinians. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak called the situation "all out war."
While Bush has been briefed on the situation by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, he has opted not to interrupt his final vacation as president to make a public statement on the crisis. For someone who has enjoyed the most vacation days as sitting president -- including days spent relaxing in comfort during Hurricane Katrina and in the lead-up to 9/11 -- it shouldn't come as a huge surprise that Bush prioritizes vacationing over crisis management.
People magazine reports that Bristol Palin, daughter of the Alaska governor, has given birth to a baby son:
Bristol Palin, the 18-year-old daughter of former Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, gave birth on Sunday to a healthy 7 lb., 4 oz., baby boy in Palmer, Alaska.
"We think it's wonderful," said Colleen Jones, the sister of Bristol's grandmother Sally Heath, who confirmed the news. "The baby is fine and Bristol is doing well. Everyone is excited."
The baby's name is Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston, according to Jones.
The baby's father, Levi Johnston, is training to be an electrician. Bristol is taking correspondence courses to obtain her high school diploma. The couple has been together for three years.
See photos of Johnston and Palin here. Johnston's mother was recently arrested on drug charges.

I seem to recall that Johnston and Palin announced they planned to get married in mid-December. I think they made this announcement sometime around the time of the Republican convention last summer. At the time, I thought that if McCain / Palin won, Johnston and Palin probably would get married. But if McCain lost, maybe they wouldn't get married. Well, here we are in December, and what do you know, they're still unmarried. I think this is a legitimate thing to point out, since a major reason McCain picked Palin in the first place was her views on pregnancy and family. (Of course, it's not their fault, or the baby's fault, that they're related to Sarah Palin, so I'm sure we all with them well.) By the way, a sincere thanks to many of you at JJP for putting up with my sometimes different opinions.

That was before Bristol turned 18 in October. Sarah and Todd can't force Bristol to get married anymore as she is a legal adult AND she and McCain lost so they don't have the RNC pressuring the girl to get married either. My hope is that Bristol get her high school diploma and get her and her baby the heck up out of Alaska.

Unbelievable the intro video. Serendipity is so..... I have been thinking about the the Ill governors situation and how it effects PE Obama. It is very clear the PE is not involved(hence by opening reaction to the video opening). The actions of the federal prosecutor raise other issues.
From the very start I thought is was not a good idea to go public w/ the Senate seat issue because it keeps the seat from being filled by a democrat and hurts Obama as he will need every vote he can get. It allows the Republicans a chance to fill the seat in a general election held next year as opposed to when the seat resumes its normal voting pattern of every six years. As to further corruption had it been filled by dirty dealings it would have ruined that persons career and undoubtedly would have gotten to Obama anyway. In the mean time the citizens of Ill are ill served by a man whom cannot give up the governorship till they say guilty. It is the only thing keeping him from being hauled off to jail as it is his bargaining chip. The Republicans of Ill have no vested interest in getting him out of there either as he provides as useful counter point to the failure of the national party(it may not matter given the vote against the car companies all but guarantees the loss of more Rust Belt seats). So all in all I the Prosecutor has been more than political enough and I hope Obama deep sixes him after the governor goes.
Slave Revolt
I love the African American man in the back ground. So pumped up. It was this type of energy that won this one for Obama (and the country).
Secondly, this clip epitomizes Obama's superior politics. Instead of denigrating Clinton, Obama's first instinct was to try to understand the larger forces that compelled Clinton to act they way she did.
What is awesome and masterful is the fact that Obama understood that after the election Clinton would have to be placated in a big way because her and Bill represent a huge, powerful segment of the Democratic Party. The way to accrue political capital is to coopt and placate those that would be inclined to stymie your adgenda. The SOS post for Hillary accomplished this end.
This guy takes US politics to a new level. He is the Michael Jordan of US politics, and he has a tremendous amount of good will projected toward him even before taking the oath of office.
Now, if he would only allow Reverand Right to accompany Warren on at the on January 20th, he would be perfect.
